There are no division titles handed out in Week 3 — and sure, the Miami Dolphins didn’t get the Buffalo Bills at full strength. But with everything lined up for the Dolphins to finally take down their AFC East rivals — from the myriad Bills injuries to having them swelter in early-season South Florida heat and humidity — Miami handled its business, even as quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was momentarily knocked out of the game and a late safety put the outcome in doubt. Overcoming remarkable play form Bills quarterback Josh Allen until he short-armed a late throw for a potential go-ahead touchdown and ran out of time on Buffalo’s final chance, the Dolphins topped the division behemoth Bills, 21-19, on Sunday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium. And Miami, off to its first 3-0 start since 2018, is in first place in the AFC East through three weeks. The Dolphins snapped a seven-game losing streak to the division-rival Bills (2-1). Miami also extended its home winning streak to eight games, the franchise’s longest since a 10-game stretch from Dec. 17, 1984...
Getty Former Ravens CB Shaun Wade in a preseason game on August 20, 2022. While the Baltimore Ravens were busy extending their historic win streak for a second straight week, some of their former players that began or spent a stint of their careers in Charm City produced stand out performances with their new teams in Week 2 of the 2022 preseason. Here are a few familiar faces in new places that shined in their respective preseason openers: CB Shaun Wade, New England PatriotsThe Ravens’ 2021 fifth-round pick out of Ohio State makes an appearance on the list for a second straight week for showing off his ball skills yet again except this time around, he came up with an interception instead of just a nice pass break-up. BOSTON (CBS) — On Tuesday morning, Patriots owner Robert Kraft slyly noted that teams that garner all the headlines in free agency don’t necessarily get all the wins in the season that follows. That answer was given when asked about the Patriots’ quiet free-agency period this year, with New England retaining some core members of the team while losing a number of players to deals elsewhere. What went unspoken in that answer is the fact that the Patriots were that headline-generating team a year ago, doling out what was at the time the most free-agency dollars in NFL history. READ MORE: Free Gas Giveaway 'Up To 7,000 Gallons' Planned In Norwood Friday, Ernie Boch Jr. AnnouncesThat free-agency spree did help the Patriots improve from seven wins (in a 16-game season) to 10 wins (in a 17-game season), but it wasn’t necessarily a blinding success. This year, Kraft is hoping that some of last year’s free agents who didn’t quite live up to expectations will make up for the lack of additions this year. “I hope that some of the free agents who...
Getty Odell Beckham sports his "NFC Champions" shirt following the Rams beating the 49ers for the NFC title on Sunday, January 30. Turns out not everyone on the Cleveland Browns is anti-Odell Beckham. There are those from that organization who want to see the new Los Angeles Rams wide receiver finally get his hands on his first-ever Vince Lombardi Trophy after three Pro Bowl appearances in nine seasons in the league. Plus for Beckham to also bury his past falling out periods with the New York Giants and his last NFL employer. As one former Browns teammate — who also played college football with him — told Beckham after helping guide the Rams past the San Francisco 49ers 20-17 for the NFC championship, he sent three profound words to his friend: “Get that ring.”Which Ex-Teammate Supported OBJ? The ex-teammate? A fellow wide receiver and LSU Tiger: Jarvis Landry. “Congratulations Brudda!!!! The Story of you starring you is Amazing to watch,” Landry tweeted after the title game, hash tagging the words “Get that ring” and adding Beckham’s...
BOSTON (CBS) — It’s not officially official yet, but it certainly seems like Tom Brady is getting ready to call it a career. It doesn’t really matter when it happens though, as Brady will walk away the greatest player and winner to ever suit up in the NFL. From taking his first snap as the Patriots starting quarterback in 2001 to his final pass for the Buccaneers in 2022, Brady simply dominated the game of football. His underdog story will go down as one of the best to ever be told, as the former sixth-round pick went on to win seven Super Bowls and set countless NFL passing records over his 22 NFL seasons. And if the records aren’t impressive enough, Brady’s longevity certainly is; he kept piling up wins, stats and records at the age of 44, something no player had ever done in the history of the league. We’ll go out on a limb and say that Brady will have a spot in Canton in the five years. Heck, the man should have his own wing after essentially...
When Ravens coaches and players review the 2021 season, they will see a team that lost about as many close games as it won, that finished with a negative point differential for the first time since 2015 (minus-5), that took more blows than it could ultimately withstand. They will see a team that, as running back Latavius Murray put it Sunday, “didn’t get it done at the end of the day.” “Again, it’s a tale [of] two seasons, if you want to say that,” Murray said after the Ravens’ sixth straight defeat, a 16-13 overtime loss in Baltimore to the Pittsburgh Steelers. “The first half of the season, we found a way to win these games. In the second half, we didn’t.” On a macro level, that was the difference between the Ravens competing for the AFC’s top seed and falling short of the playoffs. But on a micro level, the margin between victory and defeat was sometimes just one play. Here are 10 that defined the Ravens’ 8-9 season. Preseason: CB Marcus Peters, RB Gus Edwards tear...
Here’s a look at how the Miami Dolphins (8-8) and New England Patriots (10-6) match up in six key areas ahead of Sunday’s Week 18 game at Hard Rock Stadium (4:25 p.m., CBS): When the Dolphins run: The Dolphins did not utilize the run game nearly enough in the cold, rainy conditions of Nashville in last Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans, dropping quarterback Tua Tagovailoa back 42 times compared 16 runs. That should be on Miami’s mind going into the finale against the Patriots, who are No. 22 in run defense, allowing 119.3 yards per game on the ground. Duke Johnson has taken the lead in the Miami backfield in the final stretch of the season. He went for 7 yards per carry on his seven attempts in Tennessee. Myles Gaskin and Phillip Lindsay should also get sprinkled in, and we know Malcolm Brown now won’t return in the finale for this run game that ranks 31st in the league. New England has been very up and down in run defense. You thought it was bad when the Dolphins...
Prime among reasons the Miami Dolphins are preparing for a Week 18 finale against the New England Patriots without a playoff spot on the line is how they failed to deal with the elements in Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans that led to their elimination from postseason contention. While coaches generally put the past behind them quickly and move on to the next task, Dolphins assistants took their final stabs on Tuesday at what went wrong with the game plan in chilly, rain-drenched Nashville. “We didn’t execute,” said Dolphins play-caller George Godsey. “Probably could have called some calls that put our guys in a better position too. I think a lot of those we’d like to have, to have back the way that we executed or called the game.” Miami (8-8) put a lot more on its quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, than Tennessee did with Ryan Tannehill. Tagovailoa dropped back 42 times between 38 pass attempts and four sacks. Tannehill threw it 18 times and was sacked once. The Titans had 40 rushing attempts to the Dolphins’...
Before we talk about the fun, let’s get one thing out of the way. Mike Glennon was the opposing quarterback Sunday at Soldier Field. Mike Glennon, who has thrown 20 interceptions and 18 touchdown passes over the last six seasons with six teams. Mike Glennon, whom the Chicago Bears paid $18.5 million to play four games in 2017 before benching him for Mitch Trubisky after a four-turnover game. Mike Glennon, who ranks as one of the stains on the Bears front office resume. So the degree of difficulty for the Bears defense wasn’t at a peak in the 29-3 victory over the 4-12 New York Giants, a game with no playoff implications for either team. But that didn’t mean it wasn’t fun for the Bears (6-10) when outside linebacker Trevis Gipson barreled down on Glennon untouched on the first play of the game for a strip-sack that defensive lineman Bilal Nichols recovered. Or when Gipson knocked the ball from Glennon’s hand again in the third quarter, Khyiris Tonga recovered and Gipson broke into his Thor-themed celebration....
(CBS Pittsburgh) — The AFC North remains one of the NFL’s messier divisions going into Week 13. The Baltimore Ravens, coming off a not-so-pretty win over the Cleveland Browns, lead the way with an 8-3 record. The Cincinnati Bengals, who demolished the Pittsburgh Steelers, follow the Ravens at 7-4. The Steelers sit at 5-5-1, trailed only by the 6-6 Browns. While every team is .500 or better, no team has really distinguished themselves. Even the Ravens, who hold the AFC’s best record, have failed to impress. Six of their eight wins have come by a touchdown or less. The Steelers, their opponent this week, have lately seemed like they shouldn’t even be part of the playoff conversation. “You look at the Steelers, and you wonder if that tie is that going to come back to haunt them or to help them, if they really go on a great run,” according to NFL On CBS analyst James Lofton. “But, as I look at it, it just seems like the Browns and the Steelers, the quarterbacks are just limping toward the finish...
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer told reporters on Monday that the team is still struggling at the wide receiver position.  The first-year NFL coach said that wideouts are running incorrect or imprecise routes. The Jaguars have a 2-9 record. Meyer said, "Yeah," when asked whether wide receivers were running wrong routes. He said that having injuries and adding additional wide receivers in the middle of the season were issues. "We have to fix it. Am I concerned? Sure," Meyer said when asked whether the new receivers would affect Lawrence's growth.  "I’m concerned about everything, but that’s a reality of the game of football. Jon Gruden resigned from his job as the Las Vegas Raiders head coach seven weeks ago, but his advice was echoing in Derek Carr’s head during Thursday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. The Raiders, in the midst of a disappointing three-game losing skid, were locked in a passing battle with the Cowboys that would eventually see Carr throw for 373 yards while Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw for 375 yards. But it wasn’t the yardage Carr was thinking about, but rather being the aggressor and getting more points. Zach Wilson has inched closer to returning after missing four weeks with a sprained PCL. Wilson went through his second week of practice with another pregame warmup on Sunday. Robert Saleh felt good about the No. 2 overall pick’s progress and will make a decision on his return this week. “Zack had a really good workout yesterday,” Saleh said Monday. “He’s being evaluated today. We’ll get him through another one tomorrow and be able to evaluate him from there. And then we’ll be able to make a decision Wednesday morning.” The Jets have played with three different quarterbacks in Wilson’s absence, with each signal caller flashing moments of competency. Mike White threw for 405 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions against the Bengals in an upset win Week 8. White played well enough that Saleh left the door open that he could continue starting even if Wilson was healthy. Then he struggled immensely against the Bills in Week 10, tossing four interceptions in a blowout loss. Josh Johnson threw for 317 yards with three...
SANTA CLARA — If the 49ers’ 31-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams Monday night looked familiar, that’s because it was familiar. Go back to 2019, the year they went to the Super Bowl. Or even last season when they beat the Rams twice. So maybe it wasn’t all that shocking that for all the 49ers’ issues, the mere sight of playing the Rams served as a defibrillator for the 2021 season. Make a couple of plays on defense. Get a lead. Run the ball early, often and late. Complete just enough passes for a semblance of balance. This is 49ers football, and for all the talk of finesse in their Super Bowl history, at their best the goal is to beat their opponent to the punch. That goes back to the Bill Walsh days, where he’d compare the 49ers’ style to boxing. When the 49ers were good under Jim Harbaugh they were physical. In Kyle Shanahan’s lone winning season as a head coach, they were physical. ESPN analyst Louis Riddick reminded me of that during...
Getty Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and quarterback Josh Allen during 2021 training camp. No matter how you look at it, it’s clear that the Buffalo Bills offense stunk during their 9-6 loss in week nine against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Quarterback Josh Allen – while going a decent 31-for-47 on his pass attempts – could get nothing going deep, as he averaged just 5.62 yards per pass, which was his lowest number since week two. For the first time all season, Allen failed to throw a touchdown pass and for the first time, he was intercepted twice. Unsurprisingly, his quarterback rating of 62.7 for the contest was easily his worst of the fall so far, and the analysis site Football Outsiders said Allen’s performance was the worst by any NFL quarterback all season. Obviously, it was far from just Allen who underperformed against the Jags, who only had one win coming into week nine. ALL the latest Bills news straight to your inbox! Astroworld Festival victims remembered in somber vigil, as officials press for answers Trump: 2024 announcement probably coming after midterms The Pittsburgh Steelers know how they need to win this season. We saw it last week.  It's not with Ben Roethlisberger peppering his receivers with targets and throwing for 5,000 yards anymore. Roethlisberger is on the back nine of his career, maybe even on the 18th hole, and the Steelers don't have the offensive line to protect a 39-year-old quarterback anyway. The Steelers had a grind-it-out 15-10 win at the Cleveland Browns last week. That works.  Between the Steelers offense and the Bears offense, we're in for what should be a rough Monday night game. The Bears are 7-point underdogs at BetMGM. The over/under is a very low 39.  The Bears (31st in points, 32nd in yards) don't really know how to generate an offense with rookie quarterback Justin Fields. Fields ran it more last week and had 100 yards rushing, and he'll get better as his confidence grows. But it's not like he'll light up a good Steelers defense....

From his perch in the coaches box, Oregon State offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren surveyed the scene Saturday night at the L.A. Coliseum. There was plenty to like: The Beavers were leading by 25 points early in the fourth quarter. USC’s defense had no answers, the crowd had no hope, and 61 years of frustration and futility in the venerable stadium were melting away. Lindgren glanced at his call sheet from OSU’s sixth touchdown drive: Eight plays — all of them runs. It was a dream scenario in an alternate universe. Oregon State was bludgeoning USC at the line of scrimmage to a degree rarely seen in the Coliseum. “You’re always hoping it would be like that,” Lindgren said Sunday. “But I had envisioned the game going down to the wire and us having to be a lot more patient: This run for four yards; that run for three yards; then maybe pop one. But it was was 45-17, and I was thinking, ‘This is pretty cool.’” The Beavers’ first victory over USC in the Coliseum since 1960 featured plenty of...
The Trion Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 162-26 in the first four games. For the first time since 2002, the Trion Bulldogs are 4-0 after a 49-0 victory over Cedar Bluff. While it was a blowout for the Bulldogs the win was shared by both teams in the most important score keeping aspect, sportsmanship. Emotions were high on the Hill all week after the passing of 16-year-old Josh Hernandez, a sophomore Bulldog football player. After the final whistle blew, the Cedar Bluff players and coaches joined the Trion players in a balloon release for the young man gone too soon. “I’ve never witnessed something like that,” Trion City Schools Superintendent Dr. Phil Williams remarked afterwards. “Some things are more important than the game. Albums that defined Los Angeles in the 80s 50 Terrible Ways To Try and Save Money When the NFL returns on Thursday night, it will, in many ways, look the same as it always has. Fans will be back. Football will be football. Tom Brady will be great. Sure, some jersey numbers will have changed, but the sport and many of its protagonists won’t have. Decades from now, however, Thursday will be the start of a line of demarcation in NFL record books. Cowboys-Bucs will be the first game of the first 18-week, 17-game regular season. The byproducts of the extra game will be plentiful. They’ll be financial, physical, and much more. They will, eventually, also be historical. Records that were set over 16 games will be surpassed by seasons that were not necessarily greater, just longer. And the football world will have to decide how to reckon with that. How will we react when, sometime over the coming years, Patrick Mahomes throws for 5,500 yards and narrowly surpasses Peyton Manning’s best-ever mark? What about when Derrick Henry, or...

Football fans should circle Sunday Oct. 3 on the calendar. Week Four of the NFL schedule, Sunday Night Football on NBC will feature the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs the New England Patriots, better known as Tom Brady vs Bill Belichick. And if you’re not excited for the game, let former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin build the anticipation for you. “We’ve never seen it before, say what you want, but we’ve never seen anything like this!” Irvin said on NFL Network, comparing Brady’s return to New England with Michael Jordan and LeBron James returning to Chicago and Cleveland respectively. But as Irvin notes, Jordan’s issue was with the Chicago Bulls’ general manager, LeBron’s issue was with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ owner. Brady will be uniquely clashing with Belichick during the game. Quarterback vs head coach/defensive coordinator. As Irvin’s NFL Network co-hosts continued the Brady-Belichick conversation, the excitement and anticipation nearly reached a boiling point for the football hall-of-famer. “It’s not just about who wins, it’s about how you win,” Irvin explained. “Is [Brady] going to light...
An expanded NFL schedule means one more game and an assault on records. The 17-game schedule in the National Football League will apparently become official in a few days. While there have already been a few nay-sayers among the players (see ESPN’s Mike Triplett), there will also be some new changes to the offseason as well. The 16-game slate began in 1978 and since then, there have been many league records broken as the NFL added two more contests (14 games) from the previous schedule. So what five individual and team marks could be threatened by an extra contest? In 2019, Saints’ wide receiver Michael Thomas set a new NFL record by catching 149 passes. Who’s to say that in this aerial-oriented NFL that someone won’t reach 150 grabs in 17 games? The most points allowed by a team in a single season? Well, the Detroit Lions came pretty close in 2020 when they surrendered 519 points, just 14 shy of tying the record the dubious record set in 1981 by the then-Baltimore Colts (533). It would be ridiculous to...

By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — Sunday will not go down as an all-time performance from Tom Brady. The Buffalo Bills Were One Of The Most Dominant Teams In The NFL This Season; But How Will That Translate In The Playoffs? By: Olivier Dumont January 8, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditSince the year 2000, the Buffalo Bills never managed to attain more than 10 wins in a single season up until now.  After three straight Super Bowl visits from 1991-1993 and a handful of dominating playoff appearances in the years to follow, the Bills fell from grace once the 2000s rolled around and struggled to figure out how to put together a winning season for the next 15+ years.  Ending their 17-year playoff drought in 2017 with a 9-7 record to show for, it was uncertain whether this was a sign of hope or merely just a fluke. But ever since 2017, a lot has surely changed.  Following a disappointing exit in the playoffs, the Bills decided to launch a full scale rebuild and invest in a new franchise quarterback, selecting Josh Allen out of the University of Wyoming with the 7th overall pick...

Heading into Week 14, Roethlisberger has had the quickest draw in the NFL, as he’s averaged 2.29 seconds between the snap and throw this season, according to NFL’s Next Gen Stats. Roethlisberger’s passes are also quick and short with 72.1 of...
