Fire arms are seen at the Bobâs Little Sport Gun Shop in the town of Glassboro, New Jersey, United States on May 26, 2022. Tayfun Coskun | Anadolu Agency | Getty Images Gun law advocates are praising a decision to adopt a new sales code for transactions at gun stores, a move they had urged to help flag suspicious purchases. Last week, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which sets standards for payment transactions, approved the special merchant code for credit and debit card transactions at U.S. gun stores. Then over the weekend, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express said they would begin using the new code. John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, said the move is a critical first step toward giving banks and credit card companies the tools they need to recognize dangerous firearm purchasing trends − such as a domestic extremist building up an arsenal — and report them to law enforcement. A merchant category code indicates the types of services or goods sold to consumers. Previously, gun store sales were categorized as "general merchandise". The attorneys general...

FAMILIES in Alabama who are claiming child tax credits will get extra tax support thanks to a new bill being made into law. Governor Kay Ivey yesterday, February 23, signed a child tax credit bill, providing relief to families throughout the state. 1The tax break for Alabama families is equal to about $100 per childCredit: Getty The House version of the bill was approved last week, but heading into the holiday weekend, it was still pending final sign-off from the Governor. Alabama Daily News reports that support for the bill has been overwhelming. It passed both chambers last week, but some have been frustrated the relief hasn't come sooner, before tax season started. Compassion for parents working, homeschooling, and caring for young children during Covid helped make the law a reality. “One of the problems was that people were working, and their children were not in school. So they had to pay extra money to help somebody take care of their children while at work,” said Representative Jim Carns. As Senator Roberts put it, “Parents were put...

The bill also adds a gross receipts tax reduction, a Social Security tax exemption, and a tax rebate of $1,000 for New Mexico nurses who worked during the Covid pandemic. Individuals earning more than $100,000 per year will not qualify for the Social Security tax exemption. For...
IF you look closely at credit card statements, you may be surprised to see hidden fees which adds to your balance. This may not be the case for every institution but more and more, lenders are tacking on charges when you borrow money or, even, put away cash at a bank. 1A federal agency report found major credit card companies charged over $14billion in punitive late fees in 2019 To help consumers, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is now working to crack down on hidden and excessive fees. This week, the federal agency announced it's seeking consumers’ input on so-called "junk fees" associated with bank, credit union, prepaid or credit card accounts as well as mortgages, loans or payment transfers. It plans to use this information to create new rules and issue guidance to financial firms. CFPB said the fees distorts the free market system by hiding the true price of products from the competitive process. For example, hotels and concert venues advertise rates, only to add “resort fees” and “service fees” after the fact. Sometimes these fees, which...

When the American Rescue Plan became law in March, the focus was on immediate relief that came in the form of $1,400 stimulus checks and supplemental federal unemployment benefits of $300 per week. Another important feature of the plan was the Enhanced Child Tax Credit, which entitles millions of American households to a fresh round of payments, starting this summer. The government increased the amount of the existing Child Tax Credit from $2,000 to $3,600 for children under age 6, and $3,000 for children age 6 to17 years old. New York : The third stimulus check is still being negotiated, and could be put to a vote tomorrow Friday. Photo: Thomas Cain / . There are many people who are still not sure whether or not they will have to pay any tax on the stimulus checks they receive, and the short answer to this question is that no. The reason is that the checks are technically considered a refundable tax credit by the IRS, which basically means they were an advance on a 2020 tax credit. If you received your full stimulus checks in 2020, there really won’t be any impact on your tax return. Stimulus checks will not be deducted from any refunds owed to you, according to Yahoo. Keep in mind that this applies to the two stimulus checks that have already been issued, because the third is still being negotiated between legislators. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi...

Tucked inside President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan is a seemingly radical notion that children should not grow up in poverty. Congressional Democrats are now sketching out that vision more fully by proposing to temporarily raise the child tax credit, now at a maximum of $2,000, to as much as $3,600 per child annually. Their plan would also make the credit fully available to the poorest families, instead of restricting it based on the parents' tax liability. "The Democratic plan would likely mark the most significant step in the fight against child poverty since LBJ's Great Society," said Daniel Hemel, a law professor at the University of Chicago, who noted that a family with two school-age children and no income would get $6,000 under the proposal. This one-off benefit is intended to help relieve millions of families hurt by the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic which caused more than 50,000 Americans, including 18 million children, to experience hunger in 2020, according to the nonprofit Feeding America.  Researchers from Northwestern University estimate that food insecurity in America doubled overall at the start...

The credit can be applied for by low to moderate income workers and families. The more children in the family, the more money the IRS returns to them. The scope of the “Earned Income Tax Credit” (EITC) According to a statement on the IRS website, last year, more than 25 million taxpayers received more than $ 62 billion in EITC; while the average amount for the credit was $ 2,461. A family with three or more children could receive up to $ 6,660 this year, and up to $ 538 in the case of taxpayers without a qualifying child. However, many taxpayers are unaware that they can request it. This is why the lower house legislators sent a letter to the IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig and Treasury Secretary Janet...
