Amy Reed-Sandoval - Iván Sandoval Cervantes June 30, 2020 9:00PM (UTC) The celebrated new Hulu program "Taste the Nation," hosted by acclaimed writer and "Top Chef" star Padma Lakshmi, is a "journey across America" to explore the cuisines and connected life-stories of different immigrant groups. It makes an important statement about the value of immigrants in Trump's America, but the immigrant rights movement must learn key lessons from what it misrepresents and ignores.   This is particularly true of the show's first episode — filmed in the U.S.-Mexico border town of El Paso, Texas — which demonstrates, albeit unintentionally, how ostensibly pro-immigrant rhetoric often buries the cross-border classism and exploitation that help bring scrumptious immigrant cuisine to American plates at tantalizing prices. : To be clear, the show does a noteworthy job showcasing delicious El Pasoan foods. The viewer can almost smell those fresh tomatillos sizzling greenly on a backyard grill, and savor the corn tortillas hot off a slick comal. We learn from food scholar Gina Nuñez-Mchiri how burritos, which are said to hail originally from El Paso's adjacent "sister...
I’m an immigrant—and I’m not alone. Padma Lakshmi opens each episode of her new Hulu series Taste the Nation with that mantra, and it’s one that’s powering the food author and TV host during the Trump administration’s all-out war on immigrants, from the “Muslim ban” and separating children from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border to the recent suspension of immigrant-worker visas through 2021. “I find this disconnect between the policies that are made in Washington and how they actually affect people on the ground,” says Lakshmi. “I think it should be a requirement for each of these lawmakers deciding on immigration policy to embed themselves in these communities and see what life is like, and see if these people pose as much of a threat as they think they do.” With each episode of Taste the Nation, Lakshmi has done just that—planting herself within a community to learn more about its inhabitants through their food. Whether it’s Mexican-American folks at the border or South Carolina’s Gullah Geechee, the descendants of West-African slaves, Lakshmi’s mission is to shed...
Padma Lakshmi‘s unabashed love of meals is obvious in every thing she eats in a day. I try to chew slowly so I don’t must take a 3rd chunk and I get the complete mouth-feel expertise of no matter they’re giving me.” To “clear out” no matter meals she’s eaten whereas working, Lakshmi whips up a “funky drink” made with...
Padma Lakshmi has an ongoing dialogue with her 10-year-old daughter Krishna about racism. “This is a subject that we have talked about all through her childhood,” the television personality recently told Page Six. “She’s a biracial child, she’s also someone who’s travelled extensively with me, not only domestically but internationally so she’s very aware of these issues of inequality, also because of my work with the ACLU, I’ve been able to take her to rallies and things like that. “I try to expose her to as much in an age appropriate way, it’s not always a perfect science. I think it’s better to do it with children in small doses all through their lives rather than, ‘OK we have to hurry and bring them up to speed.’” The “Top Chef” star, 49, also noted that she’s very excited for the end of the school year, calling homeschooling, “the bane of my existence.” “I will be celebrating harder than my daughter when school finishes,” she said with a laugh. “It’s really hard, I majored in theater and American literature in college...
NEW YORK (AP) — Padma Lakshmi has watched in anger as some politicians denigrate immigrants. She’s been left seething as newcomers are discriminated against or targeted. So she has responded with something she knows quite a lot about: food. Specifically, immigrant food: burritos, dosas, crab boil, pad Thai and poke. Lakshmi, a longtime judge of Bravo’s “Top Chef,” created and hosts the new Hulu documentary series “Taste the Nation,” which celebrates the food of American immigrants and indigenous people. “I am an immigrant. And I was just disgusted the way immigrants had been used as a pawn for political gain and been discriminated against so grossly by this administration. I guess this show is my rebuttal to that,” she said. “Taste the Nation” sees Lakshmi go to the Texas border city of El Paso and talk to locals about the wall. She goes to South Carolina to go crabbing and explore Gullah Geechee food. She goes to Las Vegas to spend time with Thai immigrants and to Arizona to forage for Native American ingredients. Lakshmi, an Indian American who...
