As the old saying goes, if it ain’t broke, Rob Manfred will break it. While Major League Baseball’s previous playoff format included the controversial wild card game, which usually meant that at least one 90-win team would have their entire season come down to one game, it also was much easier to understand than the new bracket. Implemented after the lockout, the new playoff format includes six teams from each league and killed the wild card game in favor of a three-game wild card series. While playing a best-of-three series is a better way to determine a superior team than one game, it also may unintentionally hurt the teams who win their division. Now, the top two teams in each league receive a first-round bye, something that is much more advantageous in other sports than it is in baseball. Rather than just waiting out one game to see who their opponent is, the top two seeds could potentially have to sit around for three games, perhaps disrupting any rhythm they had going. If the Mets can hold off the Braves...
NEW YORK — Frances Tiafoe ended Rafael Nadal’s 22-match winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments by beating the 22-time major champion 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the U.S. Open’s fourth round on Monday. Tiafoe is a 24-year-old from Maryland who is seeded 22nd at Flushing Meadows and reached the second major quarterfinal of his career. He is the youngest American man to get that far at the U.S. Open since Andy Roddick in 2006, but this was not a case of a one-sided crowd backing one of its own. Nadal is about as popular as it gets in tennis and heard plenty of support in Arthur Ashe Stadium as the volume raised after the retractable roof was shut in the fourth set. “I don’t even know what to say right now. I’m beyond happy. I can’t believe it,” said Tiafoe, who faces No. 9 seed Andrey Rublev next. “He’s one of the greatest of all time. I played unbelievable tennis today, but I don’t even know what happened.” Here’s what happened: Tiafoe served better than No. 2 seed Nadal. More...
And on it goes. There are Tony Award winners on Broadway and Harry Styles is playing at Madison Square Gardens, but the hottest ticket in New York right now is to watch a 40-year-old woman trying not to retire from tennis. Scratch that. There is no better show on the planet than the current one starring Serena Williams at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.  Emotion, drama, pyrotechnics, a supporting cast of household names this is an unmissable farewell, made all the more spectacular by the fact it could end any minute. It's a high-wire act, with no net. Any show could be the last. On any given night, the greatest tennis player of all time could bring down the curtain on her singles' career forever.  She insists she is not retiring, but evolving away from tennis – but it is what she might evolve into before she goes that keeps the audience on the edge of its seats. A 24-time Grand Slam winner? Who knows? After last night nobody is prepared to say with certainty where this journey ends. The hottest ticket...
By HOWARD FENDRICH NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams can call it “evolving” or “retiring” or whatever she wants. And she can be coy about whether or not this U.S. Open will actually mark the end of her playing days. Those 23 Grand Slam titles earned that right. If she keeps playing like this, who knows how long this farewell will last? No matter what happens once her trip to Flushing Meadows is over, here is what is important to know after Wednesday night: The 40-year-old Williams is still around, she’s still capable of terrific tennis, she’s still winning — and, like the adoring spectators whose roars filled Arthur Ashe Stadium again — she’s ready for more. Williams eliminated No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2 in the U.S. Open’s second round to ensure that she will play at least one more singles match at what she’s hinted will be the last tournament of her illustrious career. “There’s still a little left in me,” Williams said with a smile during her on-court interview, then acknowledged during her post-match...

It’s hard to envision a world in which the Mets are playing for a World Series title without first beating the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers’ persistent greatness has reached the point of almost feeling mundane. Every Dodgers’ regular-season win feels totally expected, just another step on their pre-programmed march toward the postseason. This autumn will bring the franchise’s tenth consecutive postseason appearance. Under manager Dave Roberts, who took over before the 2016 season, the Dodgers have made the same amount of playoff trips as the Padres and Nationals/Expos have as a franchise, and even more than the Mariners and Rockies ever have. Despite their overwhelming dominance, the Dodgers — who have a 7.5-game lead over the Mets in the National League heading into Monday night’s game in Miami — have every reason to view Buck Showalter’s club as a formidable foe. A three-game sweep by the Mets this week at Citi Field would tighten the race for the NL’s No. 1 seed, which provides a better chance of avoiding the Braves in the NLDS. In looking at this trio...
Serena Williams will begin her US Open swansong against Danka Kovinic, as she plays for the last time in Flushing - and overall - before her expected retirement after the tournament. Williams returned to the court in June after a year-long absence from tennis, losing in the first round of Wimbledon before also getting eliminated early in Cincinnati and Toronto. If she manages to get past Kovinic, the out-of-form Williams will face No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit. Serena Williams' is expected to play in the US Open for the final time in this year's edition Elsewhere in the Open field, reigning women's champion Emma Raducanu will face Alize Cornet, while 2020 champ Naomi Osaka faces a tough test against No. 19 seed Danielle Collins. On the men's side reigning champion Daniil Medvedev is to play American Stefan Kozlov. Medvedev also has Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios and No. 12 seed Pablo Carreno Busta in his quarter of the bracket. Emma Raducanu will look to defend her Open crown after winning the tournament last year Meanwhile, world No. 3 Rafael Nadal will play Rinky Hijikata, while his...
SAN JOSE (AP) — Coco Gauff held off four-time major champion Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday night to advance to the quarterfinals at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic. Gauff, the No. 6 seed, held all of her serves in the opening set and finished the 45-minute session with three aces. Osaka had the first double-fault of the match early in the second set and Gauff took advantage for a 2-1 lead. Gauff quickly built a double-break lead at 5-1 and led 40-0 before Osaka saved four match points and used her first ace to make it 5-2. Osaka then broke Gauff for the first time in the match and overcame another 40-0 deficit with five straight points for 5-4. But Gauff closed it out on her eighth match point with an unreturnable serve. “The most proud was how I responded mentally,” Gauff said. “I could have easily folded in those couple of double-faults and match points that I lost. But I kept telling myself ‘Another point, another chance’ and then the music kind of helped on the...
Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas were involved in one of the most bitter matches to ever grace the hallowed stage of Wimbledon, after the Australian demanded the number four seed be disqualified for smashing a ball into the crowd and the Greek admitted deliberately trying to hit the 'evil' Australian with one of his shots. In a heated and acrimonious third-round clash on Court One, Kyrgios and Tsitsipas both received warnings from the umpire and regularly aired their frustration - both at officials and each other. Tsitsipas did not hold back in the post-match press conference, slamming Kyrgios as a 'bully' who had an 'evil' side to him. 'It's constant bullying,' the Greek said. 'He was probably a bully at school. I don't like bullies. He has a very evil side to him.' Kyrgios had said he 'loved' Tsitsipas and had 'huge respect' for him in his on-court interview but hit back at his opponent in response to the bullying comment. 'I'm not sure how I bullied him. He was the one that was hitting balls at me,' he said....
GAIBA, Italy (AP) — Italian player Sara Errani upset second-seeded Madison Brengle of the United States in the opening round of the Veneto Open on Tuesday. The 35-year-old Errani, who had a career-high world ranking of fifth but was now No. 213, beat Brengle 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. The 32-year-old Brengle is ranked 57th. Errani double-faulted on her first match point at 5-4 in the third set and wasted another three match points in her next service game before sealing the match with a delightful lob. German player Tatjana Maria also needed three sets to see off Dutch opponent Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The Veneto Open is taking place in Gaiba, a town of less than 1,000 inhabitants — making it the smallest town in the world to host a WTA tournament. It is the first WTA tournament played on natural grass in Italy. Organizers are using former soccer fields, and the host tennis club has been nicknamed “Gaibledon,” in homage to Wimbledon. ___ More AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — After finishing one of the most dominant runs in Southeastern Conference history, Tennessee was selected the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA baseball tournament Monday. The Volunteers (53-7) won 31 of their first 32 games, swept the SEC regular-season and tournament titles and have the best pitching and batting statistics in the nation. They’ve been the consensus No. 1 team in the polls all but one week since March 28 and enter regionals having won eight straight and 12 of 13. The 64-team tournament opens Friday in 16 regionals. Winners advance to eight best-of-three super regionals. Those winners move on to the College World Series in Omaha. The top eight national seeds are assured of hosting super regionals if they win their regionals. The national seeds following Tennessee: Stanford (41-14), Oregon State (44-15), Virginia Tech (41-12), Texas A&M (37-18), Miami (39-18), Oklahoma State (39-20) and East Carolina (42-18). Stanford, which won the Pac-12 regular-season and tournament titles, is a national seed for the first time since it was No. 2 in 2018. Oregon State...
(CNN)It may only have been French Open's first day, but already there's been a notable surprise in the women's draw as No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur was stunned by Magda Linette 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 at Roland Garros in Paris. After a dominant first set, the 30-year-old Tunisian missed opportunities to break Linette in the second, something she'd come to lament as the world No. 52 produced a 40-0 comeback break in the final game to stun Jabeur on Sunday.Known for her ability to bounce back in the face of adversity, Jabeur lamented Linette's ability to stifle her options in the defeat on Court Philippe-Chatrier, the opening match on the grand slam's main stadium. "It was tough today," Jabeur said. "I gave it all and she had her momentum on court, she didn't give me too many options and I felt that she had response to, she had an answer to all my shots and she played very well in the important moments. NCS baseball Division II El Cerrito stuns No. 2 seed Windsor El Cerrito didn’t worry about the double-digit number next to its name. The Gauchos were seeded 15th in the North Coast Section Division II baseball bracket. Its first-round opponent, Windsor, was seeded second. But when the playoffs continue this weekend, El Cerrito will be on a field and Windsor will be home. Wednesday, El Cerrito scored two late runs and held on for a 3-2 victory that moved the Gauchos into the quarterfinals Saturday at No. 7 seed Redwood. Demetriz “DJ” Lewis and David Guevara drove in runs and Dillion Putramandala and Max Garcia got it done on the mound for El Cerrito (15-8-1). In the NCS, a designated league champion plays at home in the first round if its opponent is not a designated league champion, no matter the seed. El Cerrito played at home against Windsor. Kenny Paysinger, in his sixth year as El Cerrito’s coach, said confidence above all else was the difference for his team. “Our team has been playing really well the last...

PORTSMOUTH — Defeating visiting Trimble 14-0 in a sectional final, the Notre Dame Lady Titans left little doubt as to why they were voted the No. 1-seed in Division IV in the Southeast District. In the five inning victory, the Lady Titans (16-1) combined for 15 hits (four home runs) and sophomore pitcher Gwen Sparks faced the minimum — tossing a perfect game as no Lady Tomcat batters reached base. Freshman Kaylyn Darden went deep twice in the same game for the first time this season — going 3-of-3 at the plate with four runs scored and a team-high four RBI. Sophomores Kyndall Ford and Katie Strickland also had home runs for Notre Dame — Ford going deep in the first on a two-run blast and Strickland with a solo shot in the home half of the fourth. Notre Dame jumped on Trimble offensively out of the gate — scoring six runs in the first and four more in both the third and fourth frames. “Really proud of everyone’s at-bats today. Seemed like everybody was seeing the ball really well...
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Brandon Ingram scored 30 points and the New Orleans Pelicans overcame a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the depleted Los Angeles Clippers 105-101 in a play-in Friday night and earn the West’s No. 8 seed for the playoffs. The Pelicans made the playoffs for the first time since 2017-18, guided by first-year coach Willie Green, a former Clipper. They’ve been without Zion Williamson all season because of a foot injury. The Clippers were dealt a huge blow earlier in the day when Paul George entered the league’s health and safety protocols. They’d already been without Kawhi Leonard all season while he rehabbed an ACL injury. He watched from the bench early in the game. CJ McCollum added 19 points for New Orleans, which will play No. 1 seed Phoenix in the first round. Game 1 is Sunday in the desert. Marcus Morris and Reggie Jackson each had 27 points for the Clippers. The Pelicans shot 57% in the first half and were better on the boards, in the paint and off the...
CLEVELAND (AP) — Trae Young scored 32 of his 38 points in the second half and the Atlanta Hawks overcame losing center Clint Capela to a knee injury to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 107-101 in the play-in on Friday night and earn the Eastern Conference’s No. 8 playoff seed. Young started slowly for the second straight game, but “Ice Trae,” as he fancies himself, heated up when it mattered most. The All-Star guard scored 16 points in third quarter to rally the Hawks from a 10-point halftime deficit, and added another 16 in the fourth to finish off the Cavs, whose inexperience showed throughout the second half. Bogdan Bogdanovic added 19 points for Atlanta, which will play No. 1 seed Miami in the first round. Game 1 is Sunday in South Florida. The Hawks, who made it to the conference finals a year ago, may have to go forward without Capela. The 6-foot-10 center hyperextended his right knee late in the first half, had to be helped from the floor and couldn’t return. Lauri Markkanen scored 26 and Darius Garland...
NEW YORK (AP) — Kyrie Irving had 34 points and 12 assists, Kevin Durant added 25 points and 11 assists, and the Brooklyn Nets took the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 115-108 on Tuesday night in the play-in opener. The Nets raced to a 20-point lead after one quarter and turned the Cavaliers away time and time again to earn a matchup with No. 2 seed Boston in a series that begins Sunday. Irving made his first 12 shots before a 3-pointer rimmed out in the fourth quarter. He finished 12 for 15. A preseason NBA Finals favorite who sputtered through a turbulent season and were in 10th place entering the last week of the regular season, the Nets have run off five straight wins. With Durant and Irving, they are far more dangerous than the usual No. 7 seed. And both are willing to give the ball to teammates who are capitalizing when they get it. Bruce Brown had 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, while Andre Drummond scored 16...
BOSTON (CBS) — The Celtics had no desire to avoid the No. 2 seed on Sunday night. Boston pummeled the Grizzlies, 139-110, on the final day of the regular season to secure the two-seed in the Eastern Conference. That will set up a first-round matchup with whichever team claims the East’s seven-seed, which will come down to a play-in game between the Brooklyn Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers. The Nets will host the Cavaliers Tuesday night, with the winner advancing to face Boston. Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart and Al Horford all played 20-plus minutes to help Boston build a 23-point lead by halftime. “We were worried about ourselves,” head coach Ime Udoka said after the win. “And now, we’ll dig into Cleveland and Brooklyn.” Tatum finished with 31 points in 26 minutes in his final tune-up before the playoffs. Brown had 18 points in his...
NEW ORLEANS — Klay Thompson threw an emphatic fist bump after sinking his seventh 3-pointer Sunday night in the fourth quarter before he checked out of the game for the final time. Thompson on Sunday put to rest any doubt of whether he would be able to return to his previous form after overcoming two serious injuries that sidelined him for more than two years as he continues to author one of most remarkable redemption stories the league has ever witnessed. Thompson scored 11 consecutive points for Golden State in the fourth quarter en route to the Warriors’ 128-107 win over the middling Pelicans, which officially locked them in as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. In all, Thompson finished with a season-high 41 points, which bumped his season average up to 20 points per game. It was his third consecutive game he recorded at least 30 points, marking the fourth time in his career he accomplished this feat. So let it be known, Thompson is back and his tale is far from over. The Warriors will play...

CLEVELAND (AP) — Kevin Love made eight 3-pointers and scored 32 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers took the No. 8 play-in spot — and a matchup against Brooklyn — with a 133-115 victory Sunday over the Milwaukee Bucks, who rested superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and their other regulars for the regular-season finale. The Cavs were in jeopardy of falling all the way to the No. 10 seed in the Eastern Conference with a loss. However, they ended any suspense immediately, scoring the first 14 points and dominating a team of backups to the Bucks’ backups. The Cavs made 10 3-pointers while building a 28-point lead in the first quarter and Cleveland led by 33 at half. Love did all his damage in 15 minutes, matching his career high for 3s and adding 10 rebounds. Rookie Evan Mobley added 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Bucks whittled a 40-point deficit to 12 in the fourth against Cleveland’s reserves before the Cavs regained control. After winning just 22 games a year ago, the Cavs weren’t expected to be anywhere near the playoffs. But...
HOUSTON (AP) — Reigning champion Cristian Garin beat No. 2 seed Taylor Fritz 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3 on Friday to reach the semifinals at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship and improve his career record at the tournament to 8-0. Fritz is the highest-ranked American man at No. 13 and had won nine of his past 10 matches, including a title at Indian Wells, California, last month. Garin claimed the Houston title in 2019, and the event wasn’t held either of the next two years because of the pandemic. The fifth-seeded Garin, who is ranked 29th, will face John Isner or Frances Tiafoe on Saturday for a berth in the final. The other semifinal will be No. 3 seed Reilly Opelka against Nick Kyrgios. Opelka reached his second career tour-level semifinal on clay — he made it that far in Rome last year, too — by defeating 361st-ranked qualifier Gijs Brouwer. The big-serving Opelka has been bothered by his right shoulder since last month and hit a low-for-him total of four aces against Brouwer. Kyrgios advanced when lucky loser Michael...
Now that they are the No. 1 seed in the Eastern conference, the Miami Heat’s best-of-seven opening-round NBA Eastern Conference playoff series is locked into an April 17 start at FTX Arena, but much of what comes next remains up in the air. That includes the tipoff time for that postseason opener, as well as the opponent. The NBA currently has four windows for playoff games on April 17, an afternoon tip at 3 p.m. on ABC, and then games on TNT at 5 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. A Heat game in any slot but the ABC excusive window would be televised in South Florida by Bally Sports Sun. The latest slot will go to a Western Conference playoff game. One thing that could affect the Heat’s tipoff time would be a possible marquee opening-round matchup against Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets’ playoff status will be determined by next week’s play-in round, possibly as soon as Tuesday night. The Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets and Cleveland Cavaliers are the Heat’s other potential playoff opponents....

Impacting the Heat’s tip-off time could be the potential for a marquee opening-round matchup against Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets, with the Nets’ playoff status to be determined by next week’s play-in round, possibly as soon as Tuesday night. The Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets and Cleveland Cavaliers are the Heat’s other potential playoff opponents. As the No. 1...
SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors final regular season home game on national television against the Lakers wasn’t the marquee matchup as advertised. But Golden State’s 128-112 win on Thursday kept alive their hopes to secure the third seed in the Western Conference with just two regular season games remaining. Golden State will finish the season as the No. 3 seed or No. 4 seed, which ensures home court advantage in the first round, at least. Which seed they’ll fall in will be decided during this weekend’s back-to-back road trip against the San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Pelicans. Now a game up on the Dallas Mavericks (50-30) in the third spot, the Warriors can clinch No. 3 seed if they win out the season. The Mavericks play the tanked Portland Trail Blazers and Spurs, and could take over that three seed if they win both games and the Warriors lose at least one of their last two games. “We’re going to try to win all three games,” coach Steve Kerr said. “We were just going into this thinking let’s build...
The Miami Heat clinched the No. 1 seed in the NBA’s Eastern Conference playoffs from the comfort of their couches Thursday night. Although idle, the 52-28 Heat were assured of the top seed in the East by virtue of the Milwaukee Bucks defeating the visiting Boston Celtics, and the visiting Philadelphia 76ers losing to the Toronto Raptors. As the result of those results, only Milwaukee can match the Heat’s 52 victories before the regular season ends Sunday. However, with the Heat and Bucks having split their four-game season series (the first playoff tiebreaker) and potentially to stand tied in conference record (the second tiebreaker), the Heat are assured of a better record against East teams in the playoff pool (the next tiebreaker). The NBA confirmed that the No. 1 seeds in each conference will open their postseason on Sunday, April 17, with the Phoenix Suns the top seed in the Western Conference. The NBA playoffs open April 16. A factor of the Heat’s scheduling is that the No. 8 playoff seeds, who will face the No. 1 seeds in the...
BOSTON (CBS) — The biggest question heading into Thursday night’s Celtics-Bucks clash was whether or not Boston would make a strong push for the No. 2 seed in the East or rest its star players. It turns out the Celtics will try to do both. It would appear that Boston is going with a half-measure approach to winning Thursday night’s tilt. Jayson Tatum and Al Horford will both sit out the contest, while Jaylen Brown will play against Giannis Antetokounmpo and company. Starting point guard Marcus Smart is probable with a right ankle sprain. Both played some big minutes in Wednesday night’s win over the Chicago Bulls — Boston’s 50th win of the season. The Celtics have done their best to keep Horford fresh throughout the season, so it’s no surprise that he’s sitting out Thursday night. READ MORE: Rob Gronkowski Takes Shot...
BOSTON (CBS) — Wednesday night’s win over the Chicago Bulls gave the Celtics the inside track to secure the two-seed in the Eastern Conference. A win over the Bucks on Thursday night would  essentially seal the deal for Boston. That is, if the Celtics even want the No. 2 seed. READ MORE: Celtics Rout Bulls For 50th Win, Close In On No. 2 Spot In EastIn earning their 50th win of the season Wednesday, the Celtics took a half-game lead over the Bucks for second place in the East. The 76ers currently sit in fourth with an identical 49-30 record as the Bucks, who own the tiebreaker over Philly. Boston has two games remaining — Thursday in Milwaukee and Sunday in Memphis — while the Bucks (vs. Celtics, at Detroit, at Cleveland) and 76ers (at Toronto, vs. Indiana, vs. Detroit) each have three. Falling to the Bucks on Thursday would drop Boston down in the standings, and give the Bucks the tiebreaker over the Celtics. A Boston loss and a Philly win in Toronto would drop the Celtics to fourth,...
The mission, at least the regular-season challenge, is almost complete. And it might be over before they take the court again. With Tuesday night’s 144-115 victory over the Charlotte Hornets at FTX Arena, the Miami Heat need only one victory in their final two games to wrap up the No. 1 playoff seed in the Eastern Conference. And even that might not be necessary, the Heat potentially clinching in advance of Friday night’s return to the court, against the visiting Atlanta Hawks, pending the result of upcoming games for the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks. With assistant Chris Quinn guiding the Heat for a second consecutive game with coach Erik Spoelstra still in NBA health-and-safety protocols, the Heat found ample answers on a night Kyle Lowry was given off for rest, producing the second-highest scoring game in the franchise’s 34 seasons. The record remains 149 in a March 2018 double-overtime game. There were a career regular-season-high 35 points from Tyler Herro, 27 from Jimmy Butler, 22 from Bam Adebayo and 21 from Duncan Robinson. The 35 points from Herro tied...
The Chicago Bulls entered Saturday’s game against the top-seeded Miami Heat hounded by questions about their ability to compete with the best teams in the Eastern Conference. The game provided the same answer to those questions. With one week left in the regular season, the Bulls still can’t beat the best. The Heat started red-hot, opening 12-for-13 from the field en route to a 127-109 victory at the United Center. Even after ceding the early lead, the Bulls traded shots to keep their deficit within single digits until the second half. But they broke in the third quarter, slipping into a blowout after being outscored 32-22. With the loss, the Bulls fell to sixth place in the East, a half-game behind the Toronto Raptors, and dropped to 0-17 against the top-three teams in both conferences. “When you’re playing against elite teams, either in the West or the East, those are always barometers (and) measuring sticks of where you have to get to as a team,” coach Billy Donovan said before the game. “The Heat — this season and what they...
And to think that just over a week ago the Miami Heat were limiting their fight and tough-guy routine to their own bench. Now, from a four-game losing streak that included that contentious courtside moment between forward Jimmy Butler and coach Erik Spoelstra and team captain Udonis Haslem has come a three-game winning streak and the season’s 50th victory. With each step more impressive than the previous. This time, the Heat followed up Wednesday night’s victory over the Boston Celtics at the start of this three-game trip with a 127-109 decision Saturday night victory over the Chicago Bulls at the United Center. Atop the East, the Heat can assure themselves the conference’s No. 1 seed with a 3-1 finish to the regular season, a schedule that continues Sunday night against the Toronto Raptors. With the offense lifted to a higher level and the defensive tenacity ongoing, the Heat completed a 4-0 season sweep of the Bulls. The contributions came across the board for the Heat. There were 19 points and 10 assists from Kyle Lowry, 14 points and seven rebounds...
SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors woke up Wednesday with an opportunity to officially clinch a playoff spot. They end the day having lost their No. 3 seed in peril of slipping further down the Western Conference. The surging Dallas Mavericks usurped the Warriors’ three-seed and the Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz are well within reach of pulling the Warriors into the fifth seed. After Wednesday’s games, the Warriors and Mavericks are both 48-29; Dallas has the tiebreaker advantage with a 3-1 head-to-head record against Golden State this year. The No. 5 Nuggets (46-31) are two games back and the No. 6 Jazz (45-31) are 2.5 games back of the Warriors’ new No. 4 seed spot. Could the Warriors slip into a sixth seed? Unlikely, but possible. At stake in the Warriors’ final five games — potentially all without Steph Curry — is home court advantage. Should they slip into the five seed, Golden State could be hitting the road and lose the Chase Center advantage to begin the playoff’s first round on April 16. The Warriors can still climb back...
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Tyus Jones scored 25 points and the Memphis Grizzlies clinched the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, holding on to beat the San Antonio Spurs 112-111 on Wednesday night. Memphis never trailed, even as Ja Morant missed his sixth straight game with a knee injury. The Grizzlies improved to 19-2 without Morant this season. San Antonio closed within a point, at 112-111, on a tip-in by Keldon Johnson with 27.8 seconds remaining. Following a miss by the Grizzlies’ Desmond Bane, Johnson missed a contested layup with 2.7 seconds remaining. The loss snapped San Antonio’s four-game winning streak, the Spurs’ longest of the season. The Spurs dropped a half-game behind the Los Angeles Lakers for 10th in the West and the final berth in the play-in tournament. Memphis had five players score in double figures and shot 48% (44 for 91). Dillon Brooks scored 21 points and Bane and De’Anthony Melton each added 16 for the Grizzlies. Dejounte Murray had 33 points, matching the career-high he set Monday in Houston, and added 13 rebounds....
Injured, out of shape and out of sync, the Warriors are falling backward in the standings ahead of the playoffs. They have six regular-season games left to maintain precarious footing as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, and the path forward isn’t easy. The final stretch includes three home games — interrupted by a short trip to Sacramento — against the Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers that could either solidify that spot or push them into the fourth or fifth seed. Based on recent play, the latter isn’t totally out of the question. The Warriors have lost three straight and six of their last 10 games, thanks to a deteriorating defense and spotty offense. But this skid is an extension of Golden State’s free fall since starting the season 41-13, exacerbated by Draymond Green’s extended absence and Steph Curry’s recent foot injury. “Injuries are part of the game, and we haven’t been full strength,” Andre Iguodala said after returning to the Warriors in Monday’s loss after missing 21 consecutive games with a back injury. “What...

The only No. 1 seed still left in March Madness with a shot at the Final Four is the Kansas Jayhawks. If they lose, it’ll be the first time since 2011 that a 1-seed wasn’t in the Final Four. Should the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks fall to the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes in the Elite Eight, no No. 1 seeds will be going to New Orleans as part of the Final Four for the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Saturday night saw a pair of No. 2 seeds cut down the nets. Jay Wright’s Villanova Wildcats defeated the No. 5 Houston Cougars to win the South Regional Final in San Antonio. Mike Krzyzewski’s Duke Blue Devils crushed the No. 4 Arkansas Razorbacks to win the West Regional Final in San Francisco. This will be Krzyzewski’s unprecedented 13th trip to the Final Four. Unless Bill Self can get his team to play up to their potential in the second half, there will be zero No. 1 seeds in the Final Four this year. All the pressure is on Kansas to keep the streak of No....
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Surprising Creighton is on the NCAA Tournament run of a lifetime. The only thing standing in the way of a first trip to the Final Four is No. 1 South Carolina and the nation’s most dominant player in Aliyah Boston. T he 10th-seeded Bluejays (23-9) believe they’re ready for that next, very huge step. “I think what we have done already proves that we can be here,” Creighton senior Payton Brotzki said Saturday. “It’s obviously, a tough task, but I think we can trust in our preparation, our coaching, and just the faith and confidence we have in each other.” So far, that’s carried Creighton as far as any double-digit seed in NCAA history except No. 11 seed Gonzaga, which reached the regional finals in 2011 before falling to Stanford. South Dakota, a 10th seed in the Wichita Region, plays No. 3 seed Michigan on Saturday night for a spot in the Elite Eight. If Creighton pulls it off, the win would surely join the list of biggest college upsets ever...
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Daniil Medvedev never gave Andy Murray a chance. The top-seeded Medvedev opened his quest at trying to reclaim the world’s No. 1 ranking Saturday by topping Murray 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the Miami Open. Medvedev never faced a break point in any of his nine service games. He can reclaim the No. 1 spot by making the Miami semifinals. “I’m happy that I managed, you know, to have zero break points against me,” said Medvedev, who had a first-round bye as a seeded player. “I feel like I have some room for improvement. But it was a great match against an amazing player. And I’m happy that I managed to go through.” Only five men in the past 18 years have held the No. 1 ranking that is currently held by Novak Djokovic. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are also past No. 1’s — while Medvedev and Murray are the others. Murray was No. 1 from November 2016 through August 2017, and that distinction was handed off between Djokovic, Federer and Nadal...

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Miami showed there’s still a place for old-school basketball played by experienced players — and for the Hurricanes, that’s in the Sweet 16. The 10th-seeded Hurricanes (25-10) used a second-half surge and neutralized No. 2 seeded Auburn’s Jabari Smith and Walker Kessler in a 79-61 victory for their first trip to a regional semifinal in six years. READ MORE: AAA: Gas Prices Dipped 20 Cents In Last Nine DaysAuburn leaned heavily on the 6-foot-10 Smith, the Southeastern Conference freshman of the year, and 7-1 Kessler, the nation’s blocked shots leader, on the way to an SEC title and what figured to be a deep run in the Midwest Region. Instead, it was Miami’s smaller, older, savvier lineup that dominated. “Being small,” Hurricanes coach Jim Larranaga said, “has its advantages.” Especially when the group included sixth-year “super seniors” in Charlie Moore and Kameron McGusty, and fearless sophomore Isaiah Wong, who are all 6-5 or shorter. Wong had a game-high 21 points, McGusty scored 20 and Moore had 15 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. “We just had...
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Naz Hillmon had 24 points and 11 rebounds to help third-seeded Michigan beat No. 14 seed American 74-39 in the first round of the Wichita Regional on Saturday. Emily Kiser added 13 points and Leigha Brown had 11 for the Wolverines, who will face No. 11 seed Villanova on Monday in the second round. American led 8-4 early before Hillmon and the Wolverines got going. Michigan scored 48 of its 74 points in the paint with Hilmon anchoring the interior offense. The Wolverines took the lead with just under two minutes left in the first quarter and never relinquished it leading by as many as 39. Lauren Stack finished with 10 points for American, which won the Patriot League tournament. Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
