(The Center Square) – A 28-year-old teacher's video announcing he quit his job in Ohio to go work as a manager in Walmart went viral in July and his story landed him on ABC's Good Morning America. "Leaving teaching after 6 years to go be a manager at Walmart and make more not using my degree," Seth Goshorn posted in his video that received more than 63,000 likes on TikTok. Goshorn had a gross salary of $48,962 in 2021 – his final full year as a teacher at Plain Local School District in Canton, Ohio. He left for a $55,000-a-year job as a Walmart manager. According to district documents, Goshorn worked four years as a teacher. Goshorn's story continued a long-running debate on teachers salaries in this country. It's a complicated issue because teachers' compensation can vary greatly. About 125 miles southwest of Canton, where Goshorn had a base pay of $44,735, teachers in the Columbus school district in Ohio are threatening to strike. TV host Rachel Maddow has revealed she thinks Fox News host Tucker Carlson is 'doing great right now,'  how Roger Ailes mentored her and also spoke about being pursued by CNN - only for her agents to balk at the $10 to $15 million salary offer.  In April, Maddow - who first started out by working on the 'talented' Carson's 11 p.m. show on the liberal news network in 2005 - shocked her audience by announcing she'd be hosting 'The Rachel Maddow Show' on a weekly basis, instead of five nights a week. NBCUniversal had reportedly offered her $30 million to be on-air one night a week and the flexibility to focus on more long-form projects, like podcasts, specials, documentaries, etc., Vanity Fair reported.  Speaking of her success in an interview with the magazine, Maddow, 49, credited her relationship with late Fox News executive Roger Ailes, describing how he mentored her and helped her. Jeff Zucker, former president of CNN, wanted to snag Maddow for the now-defunct CNN+, but Maddow and her agents 'balked' at the proposed $10 to $15...

New York sent Oakland 26-year-old rookie left-hander J.P. Earlier in the day, the Yankees got Scott Effross, a 22-year-old rookie reliever, from the Chicago Cubs for Hayden Wesneski, a 24-year-old minor league right-hander. Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin has cut off Councilman Herb Wesson’s pay and benefits after a judge temporarily barred Wesson from performing the duties of his office. “Because there is a legal order barring Mr. Wesson from performing the functions of a council member, the controller is suspending his salary payments, effective July 19,” Galperin spokesperson Chelsea Lucktenberg said Thursday. On Wednesday, City Council President Nury Martinez appointed Wesson’s chief of staff, Heather Hutt, as caretaker to handle matters in the 10th District, Martinez’s spokeswoman said. Hutt will represent the district but cannot vote on items before the council. Wesson, who had already served three terms on the council, was appointed earlier this year to temporarily replace Mark Ridley-Thomas, who was suspended after being indicted on corruption charges by federal prosecutors last fall. Ridley-Thomas has denied the charges and plans to fight them in court this fall. His allies sued earlier this year to prevent the council from appointing Wesson and requested that he be removed from the post pending the ruling from the judge. In a...

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres acquired goalie Ben Bishop in a trade with the Dallas Stars on Friday in a salary cap-related paperwork move involving a veteran who is not expected to play again because of degenerative right knee injury. The Sabres add the final year of Bishop’s contract, which represents nearly a $5 million cap hit to boost their payroll closer to the NHL’s $60 million minimum. Buffalo, which also acquired a seventh-round pick in next month’s draft, was projected to be nearly $20 million under the cap floor before acquiring Bishop. The Stars, meantime, acquired future considerations from Buffalo to free Bishop’s salary from their books to provide more flexibility to re-sign and add players this offseason. There is no anticipation the 35-year-old Bishop will resume playing. Without saying he’s retiring, Bishop announced his career was over in December following a 2 1/2-year saga in dealing with the injury. The decision came after the three-time Vezina Trophy finalist gave up eight goals in a minor-league rehab stint only to have his knee swell up...
It was back to a marathon for the Miami Heat, 106 games when counting preseason, regular season and postseason. There were the high-water marks of pushing past the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers in the playoffs, and the low ebbs of four losses of 20 or more during the regular season and then the final buzzer that ended it all on Sunday night at FTX Arena, with the Game 7 loss to the Boston Celtics. The uniforms first went on Oct. 4, didn’t come off until May 29. Along the way there was COVID, injuries, and Erik Spoelstra vs. Jimmy Butler vs. Udonis Haslem on that ugly night in March. But, in the end, one of the final four teams standing in the NBA, back in the Eastern Conference finals, no longer able to be overlooked nationally. It graded out as a unique and special season. New York City will require most companies to put a salary range on their job postings starting next month as major companies like Goldman Sachs, Pfizer and JetBlue push for a delay and warn that the rule would negatively affect hiring. The law, passed by New York City Council in December, requires companies in the city with four or more employees to post the lowest and highest wage they would pay for each position. Additionally, the commissioner said he felt Dan Snyder, co-owner of the WFT, was held accountable considering the “unprecedented fine”...

By Matthew Geagan, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — The Patriots made a stunning move on Wednesday morning, reportedly releasing veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Though there are concerns about the 31-year-old’s health after he underwent offseason surgery for a quadriceps injury he suffered late last season, the move boiled down to one thing. Money. Straight cap space, homie. Gilmore was set to make $7 million this season — the final year of the five-year, $65 million contract he signed with New England in 2017 — after the Patriots turned $5 million from his 2021 salary into a bonus for the 2020 season. Either way, his price tag for 2021 is a massive discount for a player like Gilmore, a four-time Pro Bowler who is just two seasons removed from being the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year. Gilmore obviously wanted to be paid more for his services in 2021. He probably wanted a whole new deal with a few more years of job security. He sat out offseason workouts and OTAs. After Gilmore started the season on PUP, the Patriots were...

The best, worst, and soon-to-be-released live-action Disney films Don’t Overlook These Hidden Gem Cities With a High Quality of Life Calculating and listing the NFL's highest-paid players is an inexact science. There are so many metrics by which to measure contracts, and since NFL deals are, largely, not fully guaranteed, many argue that the guarantees are all that matters. If we're talking guaranteed money, Josh Allen ($150 million) takes the cake. If we're talking about year-to-year base salary, then Jimmy Garoppolo ($24.1 million) is the clubhouse leader, believe it or not. And in terms of total contract value, Patrick Mahomes' $450 million deal dwarfs all others. That said, for the purpose of this list, Sporting News is using average annual salary to rank the NFL's highest-paid players. NFL contracts are unique in that guarantees and base salaries vary widely from contract to contract. As such, average annual salary paints the most accurate picture of the league's earnings landscape. Here's a look at the league's highest-paid players for 2021, with all salary information coming via Spotrac.com. © Provided by Sporting News patrick-mahomes-020221-getty-ftr.jpg NFL's...

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday that senior Capitol Hill staff can now make nearly $200,000 annually - more than your average lawmaker - in an effort to keep top aides from heading to K Street.   The pay ceiling for aides will be moved from the $173,900 to $199,300.  The average House member makes $174,000, so their top staffers were always kept at a salary just under what their bosses brought in.  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday she was delinking lawmaker and staff pay, allowing top aides to make as much as $199,300, instead of the $173,900 they previously were allowed to bring home  Pelosi said she was delinking members salary from staff.   'This order will help the Congress recruit and retain the outstanding and diverse talent that we need, as it also helps ensure parity between employees of the House of Representatives and other employees of the Federal Government,' Pelosi said in a letter to members.  Pelosi said she had been advised to raise the pay by the chair of the Committee on House Administration, Rep. White House press secretary Jen Psaki did not "preview" the administration's plan Tuesday for pushing back on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's latest action opposed to federal coronavirus guidance, opting instead to highlight "the courage and the boldness" of other local officials taking steps to "protect students." DeSantis threatened Monday to withhold funding and salaries from school officials and districts should they opt to mandate masks for all persons in school, in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's latest guidance. FLORIDA SCHOOL OFFICIALS COULD LOSE SALARIES OVER MASK MANDATES Pressed on his announcement at Tuesday's briefing, Psaki responded by calling "out the courage and the boldness of a number of leaders in Florida, including in Miami-Dade County, people who are stepping up to do the right thing to protect students and keep schools safe and open." She added that the administration is "continuing to look for ways" to help local school districts "as they try to follow the science and do the right thing and save lives." Psaki also questioned why Florida's allocation of school aid included...

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) reportedly earned more than $500,000 in profits from one of the most polluting coal power plants in the state of West Virginia, according to VICE News. Per the publication, Manchin's most recent financial disclosure indicates that he received $492,000 last year from his shares in a coal plant called Enersystems. In addition to the share profits, Manchin also earns a sizable salary as a senator: $174,000, to be exact. Jim Kotcon, conservation chair of the Sierra Club's West Virginia chapter, weighed in on Manchin's coal selling profits compared to his Senate salary. "He's making more than twice as much selling coal as he is serving as a representative," Kotcon said. Back in 2018, Kotcon also highlighted the problems associated with coal plants and the type of chemicals they tend to release. "Due to impurities in the waste coal Grant Town Power Plant burns to generate electricity, it releases more sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide per unit of energy than any other of the state's coal plants, according to 2018 calculations from Kotcon," Vice...
SAN JOSE – The Sharks completed a minor trade Monday ahead of free agency, acquiring winger Nick Merkley from the New Jersey Devils for defenseman Christian Jaros. Merkley, 24, had 10 points in 27 games for the Devils last season as he bounced between the NHL roster, New Jersey’s taxi squad, and the AHL. Merkley, listed at 5-foot-10 and 194 pounds, was the Arizona Coyotes’ first-round draft choice in 2015 and is a pending restricted free agent. Monday is the deadline for NHL teams to make qualifying offers to pending RFAs. Merkley made $874,125 in salary last season, so the Sharks would have to give him a qualifying offer of $917,831, or 105 percent of his 2020-2021 salary to retain his negotiating rights. In a statement, Joe Will, the Sharks assistant general manager and Barracuda GM said Merkley was “a competitive and skilled forward” who has “shown good progression in his young career and adds versatility to our organization’s forward depth.” Jaros, also a pending RFA, was acquired by the Sharks in a three-team deal that...

American basketball has taken it with Real Madrid. The NBA began fishing with the majors: Facundo Campazzo and Gabriel Deck left the white team in the middle of the season to call on the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder, respectively. And this summer, the hunt can continue with Carlos Alocen and Usman Garuba. Most mock drafts (draft forecasts) place the pivot in the middle of the first round. Even within the Top-15: The Ringer and . put him in 14th place, while USA Today goes further and predicts that he will come out as number 11, which would cause, predictably, his departure to the North American League. The choice of the base is more complicated and looks like continuity in the club: the forecasts do not take him into account for this edition. He would have more options in 2022, which would include three other pearls from the quarry: Tristan Vuckcevic would be chosen in the position 19; Boris Tisma, at 29; and Mario Nakic, at 36. Alexandre Sarr The problem is that the NBA is not the only...
Many job advertisements for remote work are now coming with an asterisk: Coloradans need not apply. “Please Note: Job cannot be performed in the state of Colorado,” reads an active online advertisement for a remote sales solution architect at Concentrix. Disclaimers like that are becoming more common now after a Colorado law requiring employers to disclose salary ranges went into effect earlier this year. The goal of the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, which was passed in 2019, was to crack down on sex-based wage discrimination. In addition to mandating businesses announce employment advancement opportunities, job openings, and the pay range for openings, it also authorizes fines between $500 and $10,000 per violation — a move that appears to be causing companies to try and get around it by seeking employees in only 49 states. “IBM intends this job to be performed entirely outside of Colorado,” read another recent advertisement for a 13-month residency program. “Work location is flexible if approved by the Company except that position may not be performed remotely from Colorado,” blared a...
