Twitter users declared that the Texas Longhorns were not back after they suffered an upset loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The one question that has surrounded the Texas Longhorns football program is “are they back?” Four weeks into the 2022 season, we can confidently say — not quite yet. The Longhorns looked to maintain their Top 25 ranking with a win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Instead, after forcing overtime on a Bert Auburn 48-yard field goal at the buzzer, the Longhorns lost 37-34 after Trey Wolf hit a 20-yard field goal for the Red Raiders. Texas only had one play in overtime, and it was a run by star Bijan Robinson. The problem is, Robinson fumbled the ball and Texas Tech recovered it. Five plays later, the short yardage field goal was made to give the Red Raiders their first win over the Longhorns since 2017. Getty Darren Waller with Jon Gruden. Jon Gruden’s return to the Raiders wasn’t a big success but he did get the team going in the right direction. They improved in wins each year under him. However, expectations are a lot higher for a coach making $10 million a year and Gruden didn’t meet those. Despite being fashioned as an offensive guru, one of the Raiders’ biggest issues under him involved the offense. The team could not score touchdowns in the red zone at a high enough rate. They were never better than 22nd in the NFL in red zone touchdown efficiency during Gruden’s time with the team, per Team Rankings. The Raiders have had a perfect red zone target in Darren Waller. The star tight end is 6-foot-6 and can jump higher than most defenders can reach. Despite that, Waller only has 14 touchdowns in three seasons. He’s now got a new head coach in Josh McDaniels who will hopefully solve the Raiders’ red zone issues. Waller recently opened up about the red zone woes and made it...
Getty New Las Vegas Raiders WR Isaiah Zuber. The Las Vegas Raiders recently opened up a roster spot ahead of training camp when they cut cornerback Stanford Samuels. The team didn’t immediately fill the spot with another player but training camp is about to start. They announced that they’ve decided to bring in another wide receiver. He spent time with the New England Patriots between 2020 and 2021 after getting signed as an undrafted free agent following college. He suited up for four games during the 2020 season and had two receptions for 29 yards. He then briefly spent time with the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns last season. Zuber made his mark in...

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Kevin Obanor is returning to Texas Tech as a super senior after starting all 37 games in his first season with the Red Raiders and recording double-doubles in all three NCAA Tournament games last month. Obanor announced his decision Friday. The 6-foot-8 forward had weighed the possibility of turning pro this year. “I’m coming back because I love everything Texas Tech is about, from the fans to the coaching staff,” Obanor said. “Also, we have some unfinished business for the goal to leave Tech better than it was found.” The Red Raiders went to the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four NCAA Tournaments. Obanor averaged 10 points and 5.5 rebounds for the Red Raiders. He played the previous three seasons at Oral Roberts, for whom he also had three double-doubles while his team made the Sweet 16 in 2021. “He’s a proven winner with a lot of experience,” Texas Tech coach Mark Adams said. “I really liked the way he played with a lot of toughness and character last season....
A small American Indian tribe is supporting a Connecticut town’s attempt to retain funding put in jeopardy by its continued use of a Native American mascot and imagery for its schools’ athletic teams. The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, which has just over 100 members in Western Connecticut, passed a resolution this month supporting the town of Derby’s use of the nickname “Red Raiders” and logos that include an arrowhead and the profile of the head of an American Indian. The tribe says it supports the use of those images “as a public means of sustaining Native American culture and history of Connecticut’s first citizens,” according to the March 15 resolution from the tribal council. Derby Board of Education Chair Jim Gildea said town officials sat down with tribal leaders, including Schaghticoke Chief Richard Velky, to discuss the issue. He said the town explained the images are meant to honor the town’s Native American heritage. He also said the term “Red Raiders” has nothing to do with skin color. “It’s similar to the Duke Blue Devils, the Tulane Green Wave,” he...
Texas Tech baseball found a fascinating way to get a huge win over the Texas Longhorns as the Red Raiders stole home in the bottom of the 10th inning. The Texas Tech Red Raiders just made one of the best baseball plays you’ll see this season. As the Texas Tech baseball team hosted the Texas Longhorns, the Red Raiders found an unlikely way to pull off the upset over the second-ranked Longhorns in Lubbock. Thanks to brilliant base running and a perfectly timed stolen base, the Red Raiders beat the Longhorns in the bottom of the 10th inning to cap off a beautiful back-and-forth affair. It’s difficult to accurately describe just how impressive this is. You need to watch this play. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Cormac Ryan and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have just one thought going into their third game in five days, an NCAA Tournament second-round matchup against the bigger, stronger, higher-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders. Bring it. “When you’ve got a group that’s rolling like we are, playing games close together, I think it’s actually a great thing,” said Ryan, a senior guard. “You just keep the mojo going, keep the flow.” Mojo is one thing heading into Sunday’s matchup against the Red Raiders (26-9), the No. 3 seed in the West Region. Warding off fatigue is another, considering that the 11th-seeded Fighting Irish (24-10) won their First Four game in double overtime against Rutgers late Wednesday night in Dayton, Ohio, and then took a red-eye flight to San Diego. Again, no worries, even for a team that rotates only seven players. As long as they get the chance to launch 3-pointers over Texas Tech’s tough defense, it’s all good. “We’d play today if we could. We’re hungry,” said Ryan, who scored a career-high 29 points,...
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 20 points and set a dominating tone in the opening minutes for Texas Tech, which overwhelmed Montana State 97-62 Friday with one of the best-shooting games in the first round since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985. Bryson Williams also scored 20 points for Texas Tech (26-9), which shot 66.7% (36 of 54) from the field, including making 12 of 20 3-pointers. At one point the Red Raiders were trending toward breaking Syracuse’s record of 67.9% (38 of 56) against Southern Illinois in 1995. They settled for a tie for fourth. Texas Tech, the No. 3 seed in the West Region, was too big, quick and talented for the Bobcats (27-8), who were making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996. The Red Raiders will play either No. 6 seed Alabama or 11th-seeded Notre Dame in the second round. The Big Sky champion Bobcats won the opening tipoff and Shannon welcomed them back to March Madness by blocking Amin Adamu’s shot. Two possessions later, Shannon hit the first of...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — David McCormack had 18 points and 11 rebounds, Ochai Agbaji made a pair of clinching foul shots with just over a minute to go, and sixth-ranked Kansas beat No. 14 Texas Tech 74-65 on Saturday night to win the Big 12 Tournament title. Agbaji finished with 16 points, Christian Braun had 14 and Jalen Wilson and Remy Martin 12 apiece to lead the Jayhawks (27-6), who showcased poise and resilience in the final minutes while the Red Raiders fumbled away a chance at the title. Texas Tech trailed 63-58 with about 4 minutes to go when Terrence Shannon Jr. was called for charging. Kevin Obanor turned it over on the Red Raiders’ next possession, then stepped over the end line while trying to inbound the ball for another turnover, each of them allowing the Jayhawks to draw away down the stretch. The heavily pro-Kansas crowd began its haunting “Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk” chant with 28.6 seconds left on the clock, and coach Bill Self’s squad coasted to its 12th conference tournament title since the league’s inception...
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Clarence Nagolny made his only points of the night on go-ahead foul shots with less than a minute left and No. 14 Texas Tech escaped with a 56-55 victory over Oklahoma on Friday night in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals. Jacob Groves was at the foul line for Oklahoma with 7.5 seconds left, and missed the second of two that would have tied the game. Davion Warren and Kevin Obanor scored 11 points apiece to lead the third-seeded Red Raiders (24-8), who are headed to the title game under first-year coach Mark Adams and in search of their first tournament championship. They’ll face sixth-ranked Kansas, the tournament’s top seed, on Saturday night. Umoji Gibson had 16 points, Jordan Goldwire had 15 and Jalen Hill 13 for the Sooners (18-15), who are now left to sweat out Selection Sunday. Many believed they needed another win after upsetting third-ranked Baylor to feel secure. They had a chance to get it Friday night, too. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 18 points and No. 14 Texas Tech rolled to a 72-41 rout of sloppy, mistake-prone Iowa State on Thursday night in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals. Kevin McCullar added 11 points, and Adonis Arms and Kevin Obanar had 10 apiece for the third-seeded Red Raiders (24-8). They built a 39-20 halftime lead and cruised into a semifinal showdown with No. 7 seed Oklahoma on Friday night. The Sooners upset third-ranked Baylor 72-67 earlier. They Cyclones (20-12), who started the season 12-0 and beat the Red Raiders in early January, are now left to sweat out Selection Sunday. They didn’t do themselves any favors with a dismal performance Thursday night, one that included 20 turnovers, a 5-for-25 night from the 3-point arc and far too many easy baskets at the other end. Tyrese Hunter led the Cyclones with nine points, though he also had seven turnovers. All-Big 12 guard Izaiah Brockington scored seven but was just 3 of 16 from the field and 1 of 6 from the 3-point line. Texas...
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Bryce Thompson made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 19.4 seconds left and Oklahoma State beat No. 12 Texas Tech 52-51 on Saturday, eliminating the Red Raiders from the Big 12 title race. Terrence Shannon missed a contested jumper just before the buzzer for Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State (15-15, 8-10) celebrated a win in its season finale. Oklahoma State is banned from postseason play because of NCAA rules violations, so the Cowboys can’t play in the Big 12 tournament next week. The Red Raiders (23-8, 12-6) needed a victory and losses by Baylor and Kansas to finished tied for the Big 12 lead. Kevin Obanor led Texas Tech with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Bryson Williams added 13 points before fouling out in the final minute. Williams — Tech’s leading scorer for the season — wasn’t in for the final sequence. Rondel Walker led the Cowboys with 12 points, and Thompson had 11. FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Mike Miles scored 26 points, Xavier Cork dunked for the go-ahead bucket late and TCU boosted its NCAA Tournament hopes by rallying for a 69-66 upset of No. 9 Texas Tech on Saturday night. The Horned Frogs (18-9, 7-8 Big 12) trailed by 11 points early in the second half and went ahead for the first time after the break on a 3-pointer by Francisco Farabello for a 61-60 lead. TCU won the second of four consecutive games against ranked opponents after losing a 10-point lead in the second half at 20th-ranked Texas. The next two are back-to-back against No. 5 Kansas. Winning one of the four helps the Horned Frogs’ resume significantly. Farabello’s bucket started a stretch of seven consecutive possessions in which the lead changed hands inside the 4-minute mark. That run ended on a shot-clock violation by the Red Raiders (22-7, 11-5) after Cork’s dunk put TCU ahead 67-66 with 1:11 remaining. Miles made one of two free throws with 24 seconds to go, but former Texas Tech player Micah Peavy stole...

When Beard left the South Plains 10 months ago to become coach at his alma mater, and their most-hated rival, Red Raiders fans immediately started pointing to this chance to let him hear how they felt. Chris Beard fondly recalls enchiladas from a favorite spot, the BBQ sandwiches at one of the town’s oldest joints and certainly that NCAA national championship game appearance while he was at Texas Tech. Red Raiders fans only feel the betrayal of the coach who left Lubbock last year for their most-hated rival, no matter that Texas is his alma mater. And they have been waiting eagerly for his return. Beard makes his first visit as coach of the 23rd-ranked Longhorns on Tuesday night, three days after Texas Tech students were already camping out to get in even before the end of the last game for the 14th-ranked Red Raiders. The game has been sold out for more than a month, and the cheapest upper-level seats available on the secondary ticket market Monday were going for $300. While Beard tried to downplay the significance of his return, calling it the next game on the schedule and with lots of personal connections, he did acknowledge that he isn’t surprised about any animosity toward him from those same fans who...
