The largest wildland fire recorded this year in California has turned fatal as the inferno exploded in size and emblazed its way through Klamath National Forest. Two people have been found dead in their car in the town of Klamath River, California, amid the apocalyptic scenes as thousands of homes were evacuated, Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue confirmed.  It's believed that the two people who tragically died were attempting to flee the fast-moving flames ripping through the state's dry terrain. The threatening McKinney blaze - which is now engulfing 80 squared miles of dry tinderbox wildland in the area - has been spurred on by gusty winds and lightening strikes.  Firefighters are working tirelessly to put out the unpredictable blaze, which began on Friday afternoon - but it is currently zero per cent contained.  The roaring inferno threatening wildlife and homes in California has now become fatal - after two people were found dead in a car in their driveway The threatening blaze is now engulfing 80 squared miles of dry tinderbox wildland in the area as firefighters work tirelessly to...
President Joe Biden saw his approval rating slip among Democrats and people of color in the latest devastating poll from CNN and SSRS President Joe Biden's approval plummeted to 38 percent in a Monday poll that also suggested Americans have little confidence in the commander-in-chief's stewardship of the US economy.  A whopping 62 percent of respondents to the new CNN/SSRS survey said they disapprove of Biden's job in office so far - the highest so far since CNN began asking the question in March 2021.  Just a quarter of voters surveyed are happy with how the president has navigated inflation.  The poll was taken June 13 through July 13 and released on the heels of a devastating consumer price index report that showed the cost of goods increased 9.1 percent last month over the year prior. It was the biggest spike seen since 1981.  Americans' dissatisfaction appears to extend to the country as a whole - the CNN poll found that 79 percent of people believe things are going badly for the US, a level not seen since February 2009,...

Getting a puppy halfway through the pandemic was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I love my dog, and it has been great to have some company throughout this difficult time. But now that things are headed back to normalcy, and my eventual return to the office is approaching, it’s time to go back to a life she isn’t used to: being alone. I’ve been going out to dinner more, working in coffee shops, and just leaving her alone at home more, and I’ve been anxious to do so. I worried she’d have separation anxiety (I know I do). (CNN)Angry, upset, depressed, anxious. Those were some of the emotions that flooded over many people when the United States Supreme Court announced it was overturning Roe v. Wade, eliminating the federal right to an abortion. Many others are celebrating the decision, but a majority of Americans apparently are not. Sixty-one percent of US registered voters agree with the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that established a woman's right to an abortion, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released June 22. The outcome was not a surprise due to the leak of the court's draft earlier in the year. However, the sting of the decision hurt all the same, said Dr. Cynthia Ackrill, chair of the Daily Life and Workplace Stress Board for The American Institute of Stress. Years of psychology training kicked in, Ackrill told CNN, and she began utilizing different coping mechanisms to calm down and process her emotions. Here's what works, according to Ackrill and other psychology experts.Read MoreSet boundariesAckrill was quick to scroll through Facebook to see posts of all the people that agreed with her, but...

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — If this turns out to have been the last time the world gets to watch Serena Williams at Wimbledon — and she says she doesn’t know, so how could the rest of us? — it would not be how she would want to depart, naturally. Yet it still would be, in some ways, a suitable farewell. As competitive as they come, Williams could never be satisfied by leaving with any defeat, let alone a first-round exit in a third-set tiebreaker against someone ranked 115th on Centre Court at the All England Club, where she earned seven of her 23 Grand Slam singles championships. Which is why when Williams, who turns 41 in August, was asked Tuesday night whether she would be OK with the 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) loss to Harmony Tan being her final memory at Wimbledon, this was the immediate response: “Obviously not. You know me. Definitely not.” Quickly, this followed: “But today, I gave all I could do, you know, today. Maybe tomorrow, I could have gave more. Maybe a week ago, I...

America is supposed to be the land of plenty. A shining city on a hill as Ronald Reagan used to say. It would be almost unfathomable just a few years ago to ponder a time in which something as essential as baby formula would be in short supply. But here we are -- Americans are facing a baby formula shortage and it is nothing short of a crisis. Desperate mothers, who can't find products in the store, are buying formula off of eBay at exorbitant prices. Some are being forced to substitute for other brands that their children may not be able to tolerate. And still others trying to make formula themselves with homemade alternatives, which is something that pediatricians warn may be extremely dangerous and even deadly for infants. The question raging inside of me is: How the hell could something like this happen? For one, this crisis did not just appear out of the blue.  Stores have struggled for months to keep the formula on the shelves. The question raging inside of me is: How the hell could...

There is a crisis in this country. A crisis of faith in our institutions. A crisis of faith in our elected leaders. A crisis of faith in our ruling class and the elites who hold power and have access to power. There have been countless thought pieces written, shows produced and panels conducted on this topic over the past five years since the election of President Donald Trump. President Biden and his administration promised a change. Again and again, we heard his pledge to 'restore the soul of America,' a common talking point on the campaign trail. I am disappointed in Biden and I am allowed to be, despite my family's history of friendship with him and his family. I am disappointed in him, most viscerally, for the type of people he has chosen to surround himself with in the White House. Food delivery company DoorDash said it will refund drivers 10 percent of their U.S. gas purchases to help offset soaring costs at the pump as prices hit a record $4.43 per gallon this week.  The San Francisco-based company said its drivers will earn 10 percent cash back on gas through prepaid Visa debit cards, even when they're not working on deliveries. 'Over the last few weeks, prices at the pump have increased all across the world, and for Dashers who deliver by car, this economic reality presents unique and unprecedented challenges,' the company said in a statement on Tuesday.   Unlike Uber, which announced a surcharge of 45 cents for a ride and 35 cents for UberEats deliveries, DoorDash said it was not passing the buck to customers. 'We know Dashers aren't the only ones facing pain at the pump, and we're not passing the cost of these programs on to consumers at this time,' a DoorDash spokesperson told CNBC.    DoorDash said it will refund its drivers 10 percent of their gas purchases to help workers as prices at the...

MANCHESTER UNITED should consider selling Harry Maguire this summer, according to Paul Parker. The former Red Devils defender says they already have the foundations of a centre-back pairing in Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane. 3Man Utd should start by selling captain Maguire, says ParkerCredit: Getty 3The 57-year-old won two Premier League titles with the Red DevilsCredit: Empics And he thinks they should cash in this summer and move on from the 28-year-old England star. Parker spoke to the Express and claimed: "If United, in my opinion, were to get somewhere near to their money back on Harry Maguire, I think they'll have to think about it. "I think Lindelof and Varane, you know, they could build something on there maybe, in a mode of what they're looking for and where the club wants to be. "You're talking about players who are definitely more agile, a little bit quicker, better defenders in one against one situations and I think you have to look at it that way. "Me, personally, for United to go forward, that's the starting area." The scrutiny currently...
One year on from the horrific car crash that drew their genteel Los Angeles suburb to the attention of the whole world, all is quiet once more along Hawthorne Boulevard in Rolling Springs. The welcome sign so incongruously uprooted when Tiger Woods's SUV crossed the central reservation and careered down an embankment has been replaced. A notice stapled to a tree advertises a forthcoming auction of celebrity sports memorabilia, an ironic anniversary postscript to the celebrity sports debris scattered all over this pristine neighbourhood on that fateful February day. On a postcard perfect Hollywood Saturday afternoon, one or two residents were out walking their dogs and one or two more were tending their gardens. 'You'll easily be able to see where it happened,' said one. (CNN)Nurse Katie Sefton never thought Covid-19 could get this bad -- and certainly not this late in the pandemic. "I was really hoping that we'd (all) get vaccinated and things would be back to normal," said Sefton, an assistant manager at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. But this week Michigan had more patients hospitalized for Covid-19 than ever before. Covid-19 hospitalizations jumped 88% in the past month, according to the Michigan Health & Hospital Association."We have more patients than we've ever had at any point, and we're seeing more people die at a rate we've never seen die before," said Jim Dover, president and CEO of Sparrow Health System. Katie Sefton said she's now seeing younger patients die from Covid-19. "Since January, we've had about 289 deaths; 75% are unvaccinated people," Dover said. "And the very few (vaccinated people) who passed away all were more than 6 months out from their shot. So we've not had a single person who has had a booster shot die from Covid." Former President Donald Trump suggested Republicans should risk a default on America’s national debt as he demanded that they hold out on raising the debt ceiling. As Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen calls on Congress to raise the debt ceiling before the December 15th deadline, there has been discord among Republicans for how the deal has been cut. As deliberations on the national debt continue to unfold, Trump lashed out at the Republicans (once again) since this came just after several Republican lawmakers voted for Congress to pass its bipartisan infrastructure deal. “I’m watching Republican Senators talk about fighting the horrendous Build Back Better Bill that the Democrats will push forward, made much easier for them by the 19 Republican Senators who voted for the Democrats Unfrastructure Plan, which is only 11% Infrastructure, and also by McConnell incredibly giving the Democrats a two-month extension, which allowed them to get their act together,” Trump seethed. “Now the Republicans start fighting a much harder war, and I told them this would happen. It’s pathetic!” Trump continued to rage at “Broken...
(CNN)Rain fell on the summit of Greenland instead of snow for the first time on record in August, as the Northern Hemisphere experienced warmer-than-usual summer temperatures. A new study suggests that's likely to be the norm in just four or five decades. The Arctic is expected to experience more rain than snow some time between 2060 and 2070, marking a major transition in its precipitation patterns as the climate crisis jacks up temperatures in the region, according to the study published on Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications. The Arctic Ocean began warming decades earlier than previously thought, new research showsNew climate modeling shows the transition could happen earlier than scientists had previously projected. Michelle McCrystall, the lead author of the study and climate researcher at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, told CNN that earlier modeling suggested it wouldn't occur until between 2090 and 2100."But with the new set of models, this actually has been pushed forward to about between 2060 and 2070, so there's quite a jump there by 20 years with this early transition," she said. Nov. 24 (UPI) — Pop music icon and House of Gucci star Lady Gaga popped by CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Tuesday night to recap her eventful 2021. The entertainer started off by talking to Colbert over a little tequila about singing the national anthem at U.S. President Joe Biden’s inauguration last January. “it was one of the proudest moments I’ve had as a musician and performer,” Gaga said of singing on Biden’s big day. “I love to make the public smile and I had 2 minutes and 30 seconds to talk to the whole world and I thought it might be a good opportunity to sing to everybody — not just to President Biden’s fans and the people who voted for him — but to the whole world because the world has been on fire and everybody deserves love.” She recalled a funny moment when she realized the American flag she refers to in the song had been moved from where it was in rehearsal. “When I got out there, I started turning and I was like,...

NASA's first ever 'planetary defence' mission to deflect an asteroid 6.8 million miles from Earth is set to launch this week.   Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), a box-shaped space probe, will launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 22:20 PT on Tuesday, November 23 (Wednesday 06:20am GMT) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.  Following its 6.8 million-mile journey, DART will smash into the small asteroid Dimorphos, which orbits a larger asteroid called Didymos, at 13,500 miles per hour (21,700 km per hour) in October 2022.  When it hits Dimorphos, the 1,210 pound space probe will change the speed of the 525-foot-wide space rock by a fraction of a per cent.  Although Dimorphos doesn't pose a danger to Earth, NASA wants to measure the asteroid's altered orbit caused by the collision. This demonstration of 'planetary defence' will inform future missions that could one day save Earth from a deadly asteroid impact.  Scroll down for video  This artist's illustration obtained from NASA shows the DART spacecraft prior to impact with the asteroid Dimorphos DART will smash into Dimorphos, which orbits a larger asteroid...
A mutation on the Delta variant that has flown under the radar may explain why it is more than twice as infectious as previous strains. Scientists tracking the Covid mutant have until now focused their attentions on changes to the virus' spike protein, which it uses to infect cells. It was presumed these alterations made it easier for Delta to spread between people and harder for their immune systems to recognise and defend against. Now researchers believe an inconspicuous mutation that alters the virus' structural body might have played a key role in the strain becoming world-dominant.  Their study found R203M — which is unique to Delta — allows the virus to inject up to 10 times more of its genetic code into host cells than older versions of the virus.  When Covid enters the body, it programs healthy cells to release more viral particles which in turn infect more cells, thus helping it multiply.  Experts told MailOnline the breakthrough may explain why people infected with Delta have a much higher viral load than those with earlier versions of the...
China Box Office: ‘No Time to Die’ Opens to $28M Amid COVID-19 Cinema Shutdowns TIAA-CREF Real Estate Securities Rides High on a Hot Market Shaping up the NFL’s potential trade deadline commodities last week, two things became apparent when you spoke to the general managers that will be manning the phones: Nobody is all that interested in taking on someone else’s salary cap dump; and overvalued “just a name” players really don’t have a market to speak of. We should have learned that in early October when the Dallas Cowboys tried in vain to get anything of value for linebacker Jaylon Smith. It became apparent very quickly that teams didn’t want to be responsible for the one-time Pro Bowler’s remaining salary, leaving Dallas to cut him purely for future cap maneuvering. And we’re going to learn it again by Tuesday, with a deadline that is likely going to be far quieter than anyone expects. Particularly as it pertains to players whose trade availability amounts to little more than a salary dump at this point. You can officially count the...
