Actor Anne Heche is not expected to survive after a fiery car crash in Mar Vista last week left her in a coma, according to a statement on behalf of her family and friends Thursday night. She is being kept on life support at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital while medical staffers determine whether any of her organs are viable for donation, as had long been her wish, the statement said. The crash left her with “a severe anoxic brain injury” and she remained in critical condition in the coma, according to the statement. “Anne had a huge heart and touched everyone she met with her generous spirit,” the statement said. “More than her extraordinary talent, she saw spreading kindness and joy as her life’s work — especially moving the needle for acceptance of who you love. She will be remembered for her courageous honesty and dearly missed for her light.” Investigators, meanwhile, continued to probe the circumstances surrounding the crash and found that Heche was under the influence of narcotics at the time...

Heche was in stable condition as of Friday, after suffering significant burns, but is now the subject of a driving-under-the-influence and hit-and-run investigation in connection with the crash. MAR VISTA (CBSLA) – A controversial plan to set up temporary homeless villages in government-owned parks and beach parking lots is moving forward, though some Westside residents are worried about the potential consequences. The LA City Councilman pushing the plan, Mike Bonin, says his proposal will help keep the city from being overrun with encampments by placing the homeless in specific areas. Nearby residents aren’t convinced. Residents say that the number of homeless people at Mar Vista Park continues grow and they’re not happy with a proposal that would make the park one of several sites on the westside a designated area for homeless housing. “I’d like to tell Councilman Bonin please do not do that. Please be mindful of the health,...

Charge dropped against white woman who called police on Black bird-watcher Ron Johnson just said that January 6 wasnt an armed insurrection Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar Director Breaks Down Those Surprise Cameos (Exclusive) © Lionsgate The best scene in Bridesmaids, by most accounts, is the airplane sequences, in which Kristen Wiig's jilted maid of honor gets zoinked out, has her fear of flying stoked by her seatmate (played by co-writer Annie Mumolo) then commandeers the P.A. to shout about a colonial woman on the wing. Take that absurdity and stretch it to 100-or-so minutes, add more wigs and zany non sequitur, and you're somewhere in the ballpark of Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. Mumolo and Wiig star as Barb and Star, respectively, culottes-loving best friends who leave their Midwestern bubble for an adventure to the Florida coast, where they fall in lust, ride a banana boat and must thwart a meglomaniac villain's murderous plot. It's the type of silly for silly's sake comedy that's rarely makes anymore, a relentlessly goofy yet delightfully...
The new comedy Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar cashes in all the mainstream cred accrued by writer-actors Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo after the phenomenon of Bridesmaids, then puts it toward the greatest use of all: silly, bizarre, ecstatic jokes. The bits are executed with extreme confidence; when the pair strut out in khaki culottes and larger-than-life perms, it’s like they’ve spent the last 10 years performing on SNL as the two twinkling, middle-age Midwesterners. But like Austin Powers or Andy Samberg’s Popstar alter ego Connor4Real, Wiig and Mumolo invented Barb and Star solely for one ludicrous adventure in the sun. Also like Austin Powers and Popstar, that kind of daring stab often only finds recognition in the years after flopping. We won’t know if the movie would have suffered the same box-office troubles in its original planned theatrical release (COVID lockdowns are sending it straight to VOD services), but, c’mon, we know. The fate makes Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar a cult-movie-on-arrival just waiting to be discovered. After losing their jobs at...
There’s a tiny oasis on the west coast of Florida where the men wear Tommy Bahama from head to toe and women of a certain age stroll around poolside in tube tops and full jewelry. It’s a “middle-age Nirvana” where crabs talk and you can eat veal-stuffed manatee while wearing your evening culottes and sip tropical drinks served in a mini-aquarium. This oasis is called Vista Del Mar and it’s the whacky invention of Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, who co-wrote and co-star in “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” a gentle salute to women in their 40s getting their groove back. Wiig and Mumolo, whose “Bridesmaids” was nominated for a screenwriting Oscar, are irresistible this time as two best friends who accidentally get wrapped up in a huge plot to destroy the Florida resort town. “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” has some pleasant messages — like don’t abandon a friendship over a boy, fight to keep your inner shimmer and you’re never too old to grow. It’s not gross or sharp, unless...

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Teslas have become popular among electric vehicle owners in California, but the LAPD says their rims and tires are just as hot in the Palms and Mar Vista area. Mail delivery has been suspended at Mar Vista Gardens, a public housing complex with more than 1,800 tenants in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Del Rey, forcing residents to pick up mail and packages at a Culver City facility over a mile away. Culver City Post Office Postmaster Roderick Strong told officials at the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles this week that mail delivery was immediately being put on hold because of safety issues at the 43-acre housing complex. Strong had previously cited safety issues as a reason to set up centralized banks of mailboxes at Mar Vista Gardens instead of delivering mail to each door, an idea that troubled residents of the complex. Tenant leaders had raised concerns about voting in the upcoming elections and questioned why the same changes were not happening in wealthier areas. Renters at the Mar Vista Gardens public housing complex were skeptical as Roderick Strong laid out the plan: Instead of getting mail delivered to their doors, residents would pick it up at new, centralized spots around the 43-acre community in Del Rey, a Los Angeles neighborhood west of Culver City. Strong, the Culver City Post Office postmaster, called the new system “the launch of a new era.” He said the shift was being considered to ensure the safety of mail carriers who had been menaced by dog bites and other threats. Few tenants seemed swayed, however, as they listened by phone and the web during a remote meeting on a recent weekday. Daisy Vega, president of the resident advisory council, asked Strong why such a change was being planned for their housing complex and not for “the other side of town.” “They’re only doing it in an area for the poor,” Ground Game L.A. organizer José Estrada, who works with tenants at the complex, said in Spanish during a later interview, complaining that there had been no public analysis of...
MAR VISTA (CBSLA) — Homicide detectives were investigating Wednesday after a man suspected of stabbing a security guard was fatally shot. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the suspect approached a security guard working at a construction site at Modjeska Place and Inglewood Boulevard. The suspect and the guard engaged in a physical altercation and the suspect allegedly stabbed the guard multiple times before fleeing on foot. Police said the guard then chased the stabbing suspect and caught up to him at Charnock Road and Inglewood Boulevard where the guard shot and killed the man suspected of stabbing him. The guard was being treated for his injuries, and the investigation was ongoing.
