We’re happy to say that masks are now optional in our venues. We welcome people to wear them but aren’t requiring them. So, we’re getting slowly back to...

19 things you probably didnt know about The Princess Diaries Hard to know what’s coming next as virus cases rise in many states: COVID-19 updates How badly does Cincinnati need style points? The 9-0 Bearcats moved up to No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday after Michigan State lost to Purdue. As of now, Cincinnati is just one spot outside of the provisional playoff field. Though it’s unlikely to get there on its own. Instead, Cincinnati is going to probably need some help. How much help? We’re not sure. The Bearcats have to keep winning and a team or two above them has to lose. The basic equation seems pretty straightforward. What also should be straightforward is a Cincinnati win on Friday night (6 p.m. ET, ESPN2). The Bearcats are favored by 23.5 points against a moribund South Florida squad. USF is 2-7 on the season and has won just one game against an FBS opponent since former Clemson assistant coach Jeff Scott was hired ahead of the 2020 season. The adage good teams win and...

State coach Wes Moore said. "It’s good when you can see the ball go through the net — it helps on the other end of the floor. We tend to play better defense when we’re hitting shots." JUNO BEACH (CBSMiami/AP) — A single mother of four working as a restaurant server got the surprise of her life last month when not one but two customers left huge tips on otherwise modest checks. The tips were inspired by a national tip-off challenge that started among rival college basketball fans in Cincinnati. Last week, a UC Bearcats fan in Wyoming, Ohio, left a $7,000 tip on a $65 check at a local Italian café. Last month, she learned about the challenge from a customer. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Aliyah Boston had a career-high 28 points along with 16 rebounds and No. 5 South Carolina opened Southeastern Conference play with its 13th straight win over Florida, 75-59 on Thursday. Boston, the 6-foot-5 sophomore, was dominant throughout as the Gamecocks (6-1) won their third in a row since the season’s lone loss, to No. 3 North Carolina State, 54-46 on Dec. 3. Zia Cooke had 26 points for the Gamecocks. South Carolina hadn’t played in two weeks since its 103-41 home victory over Temple on Dec. 17. And it looked as if the Gamecocks wouldn’t get this one in, either, when originally scheduled opponent Ole Miss had to postpone due to COVID-19 issues. But Florida (7-2) stepped in — the Gators were originally scheduled to come to South Carolina on Feb. 25 — to start SEC play. Lavender Briggs tied her career high with 23 points to lead the Gators. MIAMI (CBSMiami) – South Florida residents are breaking into Phase 2 as restrictions have been eased amid the coronavirus pandemic. “I feel great, we have been waiting for a good four or five months,” said Benioto Camelas. “You get to have fun, play pool with the boys, watch the game and scream a little bit,” added Alejandro Borrayo. We have to wear our mask even in the hotel,” said another tourist from Mayland. Gimenez has reminded everyone how after Memorial Day and 4th of July our numbers spiked to record levels. He’s putting it bluntly — if you don’t follow the rules, there are consequences. “We have fines countywide if you fail to follow the new normal rules. $100 for individuals, $500 for businesses. MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Leaders across South Florida are urging residents and visitors alike to play it safe over the long Labor Day weekend. That means wearing a mask when out in public, continue social distancing, and avoiding large gatherings. Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony said they are stepping up enforcement on those who had too much to drink and decide to get behind the wheel. “This is your first and only warning when it comes to this operation,” he said on Friday. “We will enforce all laws of the state when it comes to DUI initiatives including up to arrest.” Tony said this is one of the worst holiday weekends for drinking and driving. “From 2014 to 2018, 44 percent of traffic deaths involve drivers who have been drunk or intoxicated. That’s roughly 945 that lost their lives,” he said. The sheriff’s office is partnering with the Florida Highway Patrol for enforcement on the roads and checkpoints. “We will be enforcing all DUI stops. You will go to jail if you get stopped drinking...
FLORIDA KEYS (CBSMiami/FKNB) – Several colonies of laboratory-raised mountainous star coral, a reef-building boulder coral, were observed spawning in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary earlier this week by researchers from the Keys-based Mote Marine Tropical Research Laboratory. The breakthrough, the first spawn ever for lab-raised restored massive corals, according to Mote Marine officials, took place on a reef south of Big Pine Key. Spawning, part of sexual reproduction sometimes characterized as “sex on the reef,” is often described by divers as resembling an upside-down underwater snowfall. During spawning, corals release their gametes (eggs and sperm) into the water column. The gametes move with currents and can settle on the sea floor to eventually create new coral colonies. Download The New CBS4 News App Here With reefs around the world threatened by challenges such as global warming, many scientists believe that the efforts to restore coral can only be truly successful if laboratory efforts result in spawning. Mountainous star coral, listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, helps form the backbone of Florida’s Coral Reef. Through...
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The need for beach closures this July 4th weekend is leading to a big setback in the effort to restart South Florida’s tourism industry. In fact, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau’s well-produced commercials designed to lure visitors here are being stopped, again. “In light of what is going on with the re-closure of our beaches this weekend, which is one of our key assets, we have paused our paid media strategy,” said GMCVB CEO Rolando Aedo. With bars shuttered and beaches closed, from Key West to Palm Beach County, the visitor’s bureau dialed back paid media. “The bureau has built into [the Miami Shine campaign] the ability, and the nimbleness, to kind of turn on and turn off, lower or increase the volume of some of our program,” a tourism official told CBS4’s Hank Tester.
