TOKYO (AP) — Toshiba executives said Friday that privatization remains an option for the Japanese technology company, as they defended their efforts to choose the right bidder to restore what they called “a strong Toshiba.” Tokyo-based Toshiba has been trying to win over shareholders to a restructuring plan. The company has not given the nationalities or other details of the potential investor partners, including eight that have recommended that Toshiba Corp. go private. Toshiba’s chairperson, Jerry Black, stressed in an online news conference that how bidders’ proposals are evaluated will be transparent to all stakeholders. The goal is for Toshiba to go through what he called a “radical transformation” quickly, showing a clear direction and leadership, Black told reporters. In March, investors rejected a company-backed reform proposal to split Toshiba into two businesses. Some shareholders, including foreign investment funds and U.S.-based proxy advisory firm Institutional Shareholders Services, opposed the plan. An earlier plan that also was scrapped had called for a three-way split. Black, who has experience in international consulting and turning around troubled Japanese...

Fidelity did not specify how many employers have already signed on. “But we have a number of clients that have committed and a number of others in the evaluation process,” said Dave Gray, Fidelity’s head of workplace platforms and products. He expects to hear from more clients now that Fidelity has publicly announced the news. Gray also noted that both the committed clients and the interested...
In this article ABX-CA .SPX Gold is one of the largest financial assets in the world with an average daily trading volume of $183 billion, and its value has seen explosive growth in recent years. At the start of 2000, gold was priced at just $460 per ounce when adjusted for inflation. By August 2021, that number had ballooned to roughly $1,815 per ounce. But not all investors are in love with gold. Warren Buffett has spoken out numerous times on his doubts, calling it an asset with "no utility." "It doesn't produce anything and that's why from a long-term perspective, it's a hard asset to invest in," Odyssey Capital Advisors chief investment officer Jason Snipe said. "It's prudent portfolio management to have maybe a small allocation there but this is not an asset that you want to be heavily entrenched into if you're looking for long-term yield." Since 2011, the S&P 500 has returned more than 16% on an annualized basis. The annualized return for the 10-year Treasury note sat at just over 2% in that time...
Joe Biden's climate change envoy and former secretary of state John Kerry disclosed millions of dollars in Chinese investments held by his wife's family trust, government documents show. Kerry's latest filing with the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) in March shows his wife benefits from an investment of 'at least $1 million' in a hedge fund that specializes in private partnerships and investments with Chinese government-controlled funds. In his senior government role Kerry regularly meets with Chinese diplomats and leaders, and is in the delicate position of negotiating with the industrial superpower to cut deals on reducing carbon emissions.  A government ethics expert has raised concerns that the Chinese government, which has a substantial interest in several business partnerships Kerry's wife's family trust has invested in, could use the threat of derailing personal investments to put pressure on the Biden cabinet member.  George W. Bush's former chief White House ethics lawyer Richard Painter told DailyMail.com the investments could pose an ethical problem for Kerry.  'As soon as anyone even hinted that the Chinese government would try to do anything to...

VIDEO1:1501:15Oppenheimer's John Stoltzfus calls tech 'extremely dynamic'Trading Nation Market bull John Stoltzfus sees investment opportunities across the board as earnings season kicks into high gear. Stoltzfus, chief investment strategist at Oppenheimer Asset Management, considers trading activity a lot more sensible than critics think — particularly when it comes to 2020's big winner. "We see technology as ubiquitous. It serves both the business community as well as the consumer in their private lives," he told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Wednesday. "It is extremely dynamic right now." Stoltzfus highlights tech's role in the battle against Covid-19 as an example. "Just think all that happened related to the creation of vaccines that without modern technology would not have been capable in warp-speed time," said Stoltzfus. He doubts rising interest rates will dramatically alter tech's upward momentum this year. Stoltzfus expects the Federal Reserve's easy-money policies, globalization and business competition will help keep rates at historical lows. "It [tech] is a counter-inflationary trend that is embraced both by business as well as shoppers," said Stoltzfus, who has worked on Wall Street for almost four...

The authors from Syracuse University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute developed a price algorithm that provides the most accurate valuation for Bordeaux’s wine futures contracts both academically and in practice. Syracuse, New York, July 31, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Researchers at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s (RPI) Lally School of Management are out with their yearly assessment of wine futures and have determined the 2019 Bordeaux vintage to be an excellent investment option. “Futures came out below their real values, meaning chateaus are selling at significantly reduced prices,” said Syracuse University’s  Burak Kazaz, who along with Rensselaer’s M. Hakan Hekimoğlu released a report that identifies the “best buys” for the 2019 vintage Bordeaux wine futures known as en primeur. The authors developed a price algorithm that provides the most accurate valuation for Bordeaux’s wine futures contracts both academically and in practice. The model specification relies on big data and is selected from more than 8.5 billion alternative models. It uses local climatic information, i.e., temperatures and precipitation, market fluctuations reflected by the Liv-ex 100 index which tracks the prices for the 100 most sought-after wines, and scores assigned...
By KEITH RIDLER, Associated Press BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho Land Board on Tuesday decided to look into building a prison as a possible investment with $130 million it has accumulated through the sale of commercial and residential properties. The five-member board that includes Republican Gov. Brad Little and four other statewide elected officials voted 5-0 to direct the Idaho Department of Lands to look into the feasibility of building the prison and leasing it to the state. Attorney General Lawrence Wasden pitched the idea and said the prison could provide a steady stream of income. The Land Board manages nearly 4,000 square miles (10,300 square kilometers) Idaho received at statehood to benefit mainly public schools. The board is constitutionally mandated to manage that land, as well as market investments, currently worth about $2.5 billion, to get the greatest long-term return. The Land Board last fiscal year generated about $85 million for distribution. In recent years the board has been selling commercial and residential properties amid concerns the state with commercial properties was competing with private businesses and that...
