Some firms will be forced to exit the industry entirely as refinance activity dries up, according to Tim Wennes, CEO of the U.S. division of Santander. He would know: Santander — a relatively small player in the mortgage market — announced its decision to drop the product in February. "We were a first mover here and others are now doing the same math and seeing what's happening with mortgage volumes," Wennes said in a recent interview. "For many, especially the smaller institutions, the vast majority of mortgage volume is refinance activity, which is drying up and will likely drive a shakeout." The mortgage business boomed during the first two years of the pandemic, driven by rock-bottom financing costs and a preference for suburban houses...
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers right-hander Jon Gray exited his start against Baltimore in the middle of an at-bat with one out in the second inning Monday night because of discomfort on his left side. Gray looked uneasy after Anthony Santander swung and missed on a pitch in the dirt to make the count 1-2. Gray walked around the mound and then left with the bases loaded after a brief visit from an athletic trainer and manager Chris Woodward. Santander hit the first pitch thrown by reliever Jose Leclerc for an RBI single, and Ryan Mountcastle followed with another RBI single to give the Orioles a 4-0 lead. Gray allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits in 1 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one. Cedric Mullins led off the game with an opposite-field homer. Gray signed a $56 million, four-year contract with the Rangers in free agency last winter, and was their starter on opening day. He had two stints on the injured list early in the season (right middle finger blister and left knee...
The last time the Orioles made the trip to face their American League East rival, the Toronto Blue Jays, two key members of the team weren’t available to join. Outfielder Anthony Santander and left-handed reliever Keegan Akin were added to the restricted list, missing the trip to Canada. Now, though, as Baltimore finds itself in a wild card race with a .500 record this late in the season for the first time since 2017, the club announced all players on its 40-man roster are vaccinated against COVID-19, ensuring no members of the team will be left behind for the Orioles’ next trip to Toronto in mid-August. The timing of the announcement comes as two stars for the St. Louis Cardinals are poised to miss their team’s trip to Toronto. All-Star infielders Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt, as well as catcher Austin Romine, were ruled out of the trip Sunday due to their vaccination status. They were added to the restricted list, which means they will not be paid or earn major league service time for the games they miss. To...
All it took was an ounce of doubt from Jorge Mateo. When Anthony Santander saw the Orioles shortstop working his way through a sudoku puzzle in the clubhouse, crunched over a table with his eyebrows scrunched in concentration, Santander asked what Mateo was up to. And once Mateo explained, he said those fateful words to Santander: “You’re never going to finish.” “And he said, ‘Oh? I’m never gonna finish?’” Mateo recalled about a week later, sitting across from Santander in the visitor’s dugout at Wrigley Field in Chicago. That was all Santander needed to become invested in sudoku, beginning a daily competition with Mateo and a few other Orioles in the clubhouse. There’s nothing on the line besides bragging rights, but Santander and Mateo still race to finish the puzzle with a flourish of an autograph. More often than not, it’s Mateo who walks to Santander’s locker first to show off the winning sheet, which requires that every row, column and 3-by-3 box in a 9-by-9 grid contains the digits 1 to 9 without repeating. But Santander is bound and...
Before Anthony Santander grabs a bat and waits his turn for on-field batting practice before games, the Orioles outfielder makes his way to first base. He doesn’t have a glove other than what he uses in the outfield, so Santander borrows a first baseman’s mitt from Ryan Mountcastle, Trey Mancini or Tyler Nevin. Then he takes grounders, occasionally practicing flip plays to an imaginary pitcher covering the base. Santander remembers most of the technique from his limited experience in the past, but assistant coach Jose Hernandez offers advice throughout — from the proper wrist position when fielding to how to sort out his feet on the bag. Unlike the batting practice Santander will do soon after, the work he puts in at first base is with the future in mind. The Venezuelan prides himself on his defensive ability in either corner outfield spot. But in three, maybe four years, or maybe even sooner? Will a shift to first base be required? “When the time comes,” Santander, 27, said, “I’ll be ready.” Part of Santander’s value is his versatility. When asked...

Jorge López earned his 11th save by getting the last four outs. Corey Kluber (3-4) entered the game 5-1 with a 3.07 ERA in 12 starts against Baltimore. Based on his accomplished amateur and minor league career, it figured that when Adley Rutschman started hitting, he would do so in bunches. The evidence appears to be building. Baseball’s top prospect slapped a game-winning single into center field to snap a scoreless tie in the seventh inning of Friday night’s 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Rutschman’s first go-ahead hit provided his first RBI at Camden Yards, and he also caught a combined shutout from right-hander Dean Kremer and three relievers. After going 20 games into his major league career without an RBI, Rutschman has now driven in runs in three straight games. He’s also reached base in eight contests in a row, going 10-for-29 (.345) in that span. His looping single into center was the Orioles’ first hit in six at-bats with a runner in scoring position, coming against reliever Calvin Faucher after Rays right-hander Shane Baz, a fellow top prospect, held Baltimore (29-37) scoreless through six innings. But Kremer matched him, putting together his first scoreless outing among his 20 major league starts. Rutschman was behind...

Outfielder Anthony Santander and left-hander Keegan Akin were placed on the restricted list Monday and are not with the Orioles on their trip to Toronto to face the Blue Jays in a four-game series. Manager Brandon Hyde declined to address the restricted list situation Sunday while the team was still in Kansas City. Due to Canadian federal policy, players who haven’t received a COVID-19 vaccine are unable to enter the country and play games against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. Akin and Santander declined to indicate whether they had been vaccinated last season. Both missed time in 2021 while on the COVID-specific injured list, though neither the team nor the players gave an exact cause for the moves, which required a positive test. A day after adding them to the taxi squad, Baltimore selected outfielder Kyle Stowers and right-hander Rico Garcia from Triple-A Norfolk as substitute players. Stowers, a 24-year-old outfielder who has yet to make his major league debut, is ranked as the No. 9 prospect in the Orioles’ pipeline. Santander homered in Sunday’s 10-7 win against the...

Anthony Santander had a hunch. With so few left-handed pitchers to face in 2016, when Santander played in High-A in Cleveland’s organization, the few at-bats the switch hitter took from his natural right-handed side of the plate began to feel more unnatural. He swing timing was off, his movements felt clunky and he felt uncomfortable at the plate. So he made a decision. With a left-handed pitcher on the mound, Santander surprised his manager and everyone else when he strode to the plate and set up to hit left-handed, creating a left-on-left matchup he hadn’t seen in years — if ever. The first pitch, a fastball, he swung through. But the swing felt good, so he was encouraged. And then the pitcher threw two sliders. Both swept off the plate, away from his flailing bat. He walked back to the dugout, strikeout under his belt, and he knew. “You know what?” he thought. “I’m better off trying to hit right-handed.” Since that moment, Santander has never stood in for an at-bat swinging from the same side as a left-handed pitcher....
For all the talk of the wall, of how difficult it was to hit a ball over it, Anthony Santander proved in the biggest moment Thursday afternoon that it could be done. With two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, Santander turned on an inside cutter, powering a three-run home run over that left field wall for his first career walk-off, sealing the Orioles’ 9-6 victory that ended a six-game losing streak and avoided four-game sweep against the New York Yankees. Earlier in the inning, a throwing error by Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson allowed Austin Hays to reach first base, and a one-out single from Trey Mancini on the 10th pitch of his at-bat brought Santander to the plate. Santander had already doubled twice and walked once Thursday, and he didn’t need to see more than that first-pitch cutter under the hands. When he reached home plate, the Gatorade bath waited for him among a throng of players. And then Santander raised his fingers to the sky — he had broken a six-game losing skid...
BALTIMORE (AP) — Anthony Santander lined a three-run homer in the ninth inning off Lucas Luetge and the Baltimore Orioles avoided a four-game sweep by beating the New York Yankees 9-6 on Thursday. New York lost for just the second time in 11 games and is still a major-league best 28-10. The Yankees fell to 18-1 when scoring five runs or more this season. READ MORE: CIAA Basketball Tournament Drew 36K Fans And Had $19.6M Economic Impact, Officials SayThe Yankees were down to their last out in the ninth when DJ LeMahieu hit an RBI single off closer Jorge Lopez that tied it at 6. The Orioles answered when Austin Hays reached on a throwing error by third baseman Josh Donaldson, who had pinch-hit in the top half of the inning. One out later, Trey Mancini singled and Santander followed with a drive to left field for his seventh homer of the season. When Santander connected, it had plenty of distance — the only question was whether it would be fair or foul, and it easily was inside the pole...
Sitting inside the visiting clubhouse at Yankee Stadium on Thursday afternoon, Anthony Santander shook his head. He thought back to what could’ve been. He should’ve had three walks — he was sure of that — continuing an on-base streak that instead ended after 19 games. Three pitches the New York Yankees threw off the plate were called for strikes, with two in 3-0 counts rankling him most. For a player who has worked hard to lower his chase percentage and increase his walk rate, calls such as those from home plate umpire Ted Barrett are especially galling. Santander did what he wanted to do at the plate. He was still punished for it with a strike call. “Tomorrow’s a new day,” Santander said through team interpreter Brandon Quinones, shaking off the frustration of a rare no-hit day. “The focus remains the same: Getting on base.” Few players in Major League Baseball have done that as well as Santander to begin the 2022 season. Before Thursday’s disappointment, Santander and Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Trea Turner led the majors with 18 consecutive...
Maybe in an alternate universe, first baseman Trey Mancini picks third baseman Kelvin Gutiérrez’s low throw. Perhaps shortstop Jorge Mateo doesn’t fumble a backhand grounder. And maybe second baseman Rougned Odor pulls off a pick on a rocket shot ruled a base hit. In this universe, though, none of those outcomes occurred for the Orioles Thursday afternoon in the Bronx. In what had been another standout performance from left-hander Bruce Zimmermann, the bobbles and bungles and botches in the fifth inning against the New York Yankees were a pothole that blew out the tire on Baltimore’s chances in the series finale. In the top half of the frame, the Orioles squandered a chance with the bases loaded, practically inviting a Yankees comeback attempt. And then in the bottom half of the inning, the Orioles handed over a written invitation for one in the form of those two errors from Gutiérrez and Mateo. It led to four unearned runs off Zimmermann and a 10-5 loss to secure a New York sweep. “We gotta be able to catch the ball for us...
Robinson Chirinos flailed a glove at the pitch, but it was just a prayer, a wild swipe of his backhand to save a ball that bounced a few feet in front of the plate and quickly skipped past the catcher. Right-hander Dillon Tate had entered in the seventh inning Wednesday, inheriting a runner and hoping to keep the Orioles within two runs against the New York Yankees. With two outs and a man on third, Tate looked poised to escape — before that misfired changeup, that is. The 0-2 offering sent to the backstop allowed Isiah Kiner-Falefa to run home, scoring the Yankees’ final run in a 5-2 victory. One pitch later, Tate went back to the changeup. That time it worked, striking out Aaron Judge. And while the run wasn’t charged to Tate, it was another recent example of a bullpen that had been so solid suddenly forming creases under the pressure of extended work and powerful lineups. Few Baltimore (6-12) starters have worked deep into games, although the effort from right-hander Tyler Wells was his best of the...
In this article SAN-ESA Santander office building in London.Luke MacGregor | Bloomberg via Getty ImagesSpanish bank Santander is launching its own "buy now, pay later" service in Europe, in a bid to fend off fintech rivals from eating its lunch. The lender said Wednesday it will roll out Zinia, an app that lets shoppers split their purchases across monthly installments interest-free, across its markets this year, starting with the Netherlands. The technology behind Zinia has been operational in Germany for the past year, where it has already accrued more than 2 million customers, Santander said. Ezequiel Szafir, CEO of Santander's Openbank online banking division, said the company aims to "become a leader in the buy now, pay later market." He touted "the security and trust provided by a large financial group" as a key factor differentiating Santander's offering from other BNPL products, such as Klarna and Afterpay. The U.K. wing of Santander bank is trying to recover more than $175 million in accidental payments made on Christmas Day. The bank said 75,000 accounts received double payments over the holiday, many of which were to rival banks and will be difficult to retrieve. The error was the result of a scheduling error that has been rectified, it said.
