Getty Kevin Harvick (right) will pass Kurt Busch on the all-time starts list. 23XI Racing’s Kurt Busch will miss his third consecutive Cup Series race as he continues to focus on recovering from concussion-like symptoms sustained in a crash during qualifying at Pocono Raceway. Ty Gibbs will replace him in the No. 45 Toyota Camry while Kevin Harvick breaks their tie on a historic list. Busch and Harvick enter the race weekend tied for 11th on the all-time starts list. They have each suited up for 776 Cup Series races, eight fewer than Michael Waltrip. Harvick will make his 777th start at Michigan International Speedway on August 7, moving him one start closer to Waltrip’s mark. Busch actually began the season with two more career starts than his fellow champion. He entered the season with 756 while Harvick had 754. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver moved into a tie with Busch after races at Pocono Raceway and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Now he will take sole possession of 11th on the leaderboard. Getty Denny Hamlin celebrates a win at Pocono Raceway. The trip to Pocono Raceway on July 24 will provide several winless Cup Series drivers with an opportunity to fight for a playoff spot. Denny Hamlin will pursue his third win of the 2022 season, one that would break a historic tie with a NASCAR Hall of Famer. Hamlin enters the Pocono weekend with six wins at the track. He swept the 2006 season before returning to Victory Lane in 2009, 2010, 2019, and 2020. This is the most among active drivers, and it puts him in a tie with Jeff Gordon (1996, 1997, 1998, 2007, 2011, 2012) for the most all-time. If he can win the M&M’s Fan Appreciation 400 on July 24, he will take the top spot in the record books, and he will add even more playoff points to his total. Hamlin will enter the weekend with the second-best odds among Cup Series drivers. He sits at 8-1 while Chase Elliott holds the top spot at 7-1. His previous wins are a major reason for...
Getty Hailie Deegan joined a historic list at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The Camping World Truck Series drivers took on Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the first time on July 9. Hailie Deegan used this road course race to join a historic list with a 10th-place finish. The driver of the No. 1 David Gilliland Racing Ford F-150 secured her first top-10 finish of the 2022 season, and she became the first female driver to achieve this goal at a road course since the 1994 season. Shawna Robinson was the last to do so with a 10th-place finish at Watkins Glen International while driving for Ferree Racing. While Deegan joined Robinson on the elite list, she made history in her own way. She is the first female driver to secure a top-10 finish on a road course in the Camping World Truck Series. Natalie Decker, Jennifer Jo Cobb, and Angela Ruch are the only other female drivers to score a top-10 in the Truck Series, but they all did so at Daytona International Speedway. Getty William Byron will try to join a historic list at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron has a big goal heading toward Atlanta Motor Speedway. He will try to win the Quaker State 400 Presented by Walmart and become the seventh driver to sweep the track’s races in a single Cup Series season. There are some absolute legends of NASCAR that have won both races at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Marvin Panch was the first to achieve this feat during the 1965 season. Bobby Allison then joined him in 1972 while David Pearson followed in 1973. Bill Elliott actually swept Atlanta two separate times. He first did so in 1985 before adding two more wins in 1992. Carl Edwards (2005) and Jimmie Johnson (2007) are the only other drivers to sweep at the 1.5-mile Georgia track. ALL the latest NASCAR news straight to your inbox! Getty Joey Logano (left) is within reach of Brad Keselowski (right) on a wins list. The driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford Mustang won his second Cup Series race of 2022 on June 5. It was Joey Logano’s 29th all-time — 27th for Team Penske — which moved him closer to Brad Keselowski on a historic list. Team Penske drivers have combined to win 136 Cup Series races, per NASCAR, dating back to Mark Donohue’s trip to Victory Lane in 1973. Rusty Wallace has the most Cup Series wins for Team Penske at 37 while Keselowski is currently second at 34. More than half a century after it burst into the national scene as a hotbed of social dissent punctuated by sometimes violent Vietnam War protests, People’s Park has finally landed on the National Register of Historic Places. But while the UC Berkeley-owned park is now deemed a historic resource worth preserving, the university isn’t changing its $312 million plan to build housing on the hallowed grounds for 1,100 university students and 125 homeless residents. That’s even though the UC Regents triggered People Park’s first uprising when they acquired the 2.8-acre site just east of University Avenue in 1967 with plans to build — student housing. People’s Park joined the National Register on May 24, seven months after the California State Historical Resources Commission unanimously supported that designation. One commissioner was “stunned” that the UC Regents were the only ones to oppose the honor, going against the grain of 62 letters in support. In April 2021, UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor Marc Fisher wrote to the commission that while the university will commemorate the park’s history in its development plan, fact is...
Getty Kyle Larson can join a historic list at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway takes place on May 29, providing drivers with the chance to win a coveted Cup Series Crown Jewel. If Kyle Larson wins his second consecutive Coca-Cola 600, he will join a historic list. There are currently six drivers that have won back-to-back Coca-Cola 600s. This list includes Buddy Baker (1972-1973), Darrell Waltrip (1978-1979 and 1988-1989), Neil Bonnett (1982-1983), Dale Earnhardt (1992-1993), Jeff Gordon (1997-1998), and Jimmie Johnson (2003-2005). Johnson is the only driver to win three consecutive Coca-Cola 600s. Along with the most consecutive wins in the Crown Jewel race, Johnson also has the second-most Coca-Cola 600 wins in NASCAR history. He captured four during his career. Waltrip has the most with his five trips to Victory Lane in the Crown Jewel race. ALL the latest NASCAR news straight to your inbox! Subscribe to the Heavy on NASCAR newsletter here! For the second time in its history, Manassas National Battlefield Park is listed as one of the most endangered historic places in Virginia. Conservation groups gathered at the battlefield’s Brawner Farm on Tuesday to announce its inclusion on the annual list by Preservation Virginia, a statewide group based in Richmond that publishes a yearly list of endangered historic sites. “These landscapes tell an important story of our past,” said Preservation Virginia CEO Elizabeth Kostelny. The battlefield is the site of the first and second battles of Bull Run in the Civil War. The First Battle of Bull Run, fought July 21, 1861, was the first major battle of the war, with nearly 1,000 soldiers dying in a Confederate victory. The Second Battle of Bull Run was fought from Aug. 28, 1862, to Aug. 30, 1862. Nearly 3,000 soldiers died in the battle, which was a Confederate victory and precipitated the South’s failed invasion of Maryland the following month. The site is now at...

Preservation Action Council Executive Director Ben Leech was putting the final touches last week on the “Endangered 8” — a new list of San Jose historic sites the nonprofit believes are most threatened — when he discovered something surprising: The Burbank theater, one of the buildings on the list, was going up for auction. Leech sprang into action, making sure some key people knew about the broker walk-through last Friday and the Dec. 13 auction. He hopes a preservation-minded buyer will take on the building, which has a starting bid of $200,000, and says the auction — that might have gone unnoticed had he not stumbled onto it while doublechecking the theater’s address — underlines the reason for publishing the “Endangered 8.” “You couldn’t design a more neighborhood landmark than the Burbank. It has the name of the neighborhood on it,” said Leech, who added that PAC-SJ has talked to Burbank residents who don’t need to be sold on why the building is special. “It’s one of the things that defines their community.” In addition to the Burbank, the “Endangered...
Getty Adrian Peterson scored his 120th touchdown. The Seattle Seahawks hosted the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, December 5, the first game with Adrian Peterson on the active roster. The 2012 NFL MVP made the most of his opportunities by scoring a rushing touchdown and becoming the fourth player in NFL history to rush for 120 touchdowns. All Day joined this elite group during the second quarter of the December 5 game. He took the handoff from Russell Wilson on the one-yard line and rushed to the left side of the formation. BOSTON (CBS) — A preservation group is out with a new list of “America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.” Making the list is an area that the National Trust For Historic Preservation says is threatened by climate change – the Boston Harbor Islands. The White House released a sanitized list of 'Trump Administration Accomplishments' on the president's last full day in office – claiming credit for job gains before the coronavirus left millions unemployed. The president is also taking credit for millions of deaths avoided but not the 400,000 U.S. coronavirus deaths that happened on his watch. The White House pushed out its accomplishments list as the president leaves office with the lowest approval ratings of his presidency, with windows still smashed inside the Capitol from the MAGA riot this month. Sir Winston Churchill’s former home — Chartwell in Kent — has been put on a Black-Lives-Matter-style list of shame by Britain’s leading heritage body, the National Trust. Chartwell is one of a number of historic properties which, according to the National Trust, has links to the ‘sometimes uncomfortable role that Britain, and Britons, have played in global history.’ It was from Chartwell that Winston Churchill viewed the ‘sunlit uplands’ of the South Downs, memorably evoked in perhaps his greatest, most inspirational and influential speech as Britain’s wartime leader — ‘This was their finest hour.’ But Churchill’s role in helping save the world from Nazi and Imperial Japanese tyranny seems to cut little ice with the increasingly woke National Trust. Describing the event as “historic,” the Trump campaign said on Sunday that the convention has been designed to “honor the great American story, the American people that have written it,” and how President Donald Trump has “empowered them to succeed.” The list of speakers includes a mix of high-profile politicians, such as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), as well as other conservative activists and state politicians. Several congressional hopefuls are also slated to speak, including Madison Cawthorne, a South Carolina businessman who won his primary earlier this year at age 24, Burgess Owens, a former NFL player and businessman running in Utah, and Sean Parnell, a former combat veteran running for office in Pennsylvania. BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) — An Arkansas panel has recommended that a Confederate statue remain on the National Register of Historic Places even after it is moved from a public space to private property. The statue of an unnamed Confederate soldier has been in downtown Bentonville since 1908 and listed on the national register since 1996. On Wednesday, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program State Review Board voted unanimously to support keeping the distinction after it is moved, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. The Arkansas division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which owns the statue, announced in June that it would be moved to James H. Berry Park following discussions with community leaders. A move date has not been announced. State Historic Preservation Officer Stacy Hurst will send the recommendation to the National Park Service in Washington, D.C. Approval normally takes 30 to 45 days, Melissa Whitfield, spokeswoman for the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism, has said. She warned that moving a monument could cause it to lose its listing because the context of place is often what qualifies...
