Getty Fourth-round pick Zech McPhearson is fighting for a role in the Philadelphia Eagles' secondary. One position room is getting pretty crowded in Philadelphia. With 12 cornerbacks rostered, the Eagles may be running out of seats in the room. It’s a good problem to have. Zech McPhearson, a fourth-round pick in 2021, is fighting for one of those chairs at training camp. It’s hard to get noticed with so many corners running around, but the talented 24-year-old is doing his best to standout. He made an acrobatic, leaping interception on Gardner Minshew on August 2 that elicited a few oohs from the media contingent watching practice. Problem was, McPhearson landed out of bounds. Play negated. A few plays later, he was burned for a touchdown by Jalen Reagor. Those things are going to happen at camp, sometimes it leads to a breakthrough teaching moment from the coaching staff. McPhearson was a surprise standout last summer, but defensive snaps were at a premium once the season began. He got to start the regular-season finale in Week 18 as the...
(CBS4) – Authorities arrested 10 people last week who they say are responsible for a fatal fight that broke out in Arvada in 2020 between two motorcycle gangs. It happened on the morning of July 11 at a restaurant on the 5900 block of Lamar Street. One man was shot and killed, two others were shot and injured and a fourth man — Ryan McPhearson — sustained lifelong injuries when he tried to help people who were hurt and was attacked. McPhearson was the lead singer in the Colorado band Nightwolf. Authorities said the fight was between members of the Hells Angels and the Mongols. Dozens of shots were fired across a stretch of four blocks of Lamar Street and William Henderson, 43, of Arvada, died in the shooting. McPhearson “was severely beaten with a helmet and run over with a motorcycle,” according to Arvada police. Two others were on motorcycles and were run off the road by members of one of the gangs and both were badly hurt. The 10 people who were arrested were apprehended in Colorado as...
Getty Eagles CB Darius Slay takes great pride in mentoring the younger players on the roster. Darius Slay could be an extra in a Kevin Hart movie. Funny, charming, and damn good at his job. He’ll playfully challenge anyone within ear shot with a non-confrontational comedic language all his own. On Tuesday, the three-time Pro Bowler joked that the game of football is the same as it was in 1960, only with “better looking people” doing it, then he proceeded to refer to Quez Watkins as “Ugly Quez.” Classic Slay. When a teammate yelled out “Hey Slay!” during his time in the media tent, the Georgia native shouted back: “Yoooooooooo!” It’s all about keeping it loose while building chemistry. “Everybody wants the best [for each other] and that’s the feeling we have in the [defensive backs] room,” Slay told reporters. “That’s a great thing we got going on, starting from me up, me and Rod [Rodney McLeod]. We want nothing but the best for the guys, it don’t matter if you’re coming in here trying to take my...
Getty Fourth-round pick Zech McPhearson is fighting for a role in the Philadelphia Eagles' secondary. Rookie cornerback Zech McPhearson had every right to be upset when the Philadelphia Eagles signed Steven Nelson on July 25. The fourth-round pick was previously in the mix for a starting job in what was viewed as a weak secondary. Now that group could be a legitimate strength in Philly. McPhearson was flying around the practice field on Tuesday and caused four pass breakups. He’s fast, physical, and never satisfied. Instead of accepting kudos for the four passes he disrupted, McPhearson was fixated on dropping two of them. The Baltimore native thought he could have returned them both for touchdowns. “I view them as touchdowns if I catch them,” McPhearson said. “That’s two dropped pick-sixes and that’s what? Twelve points off the board and that’s a lot in this league, and whenever you have the opportunity to do that, you gotta capitalize.” You don’t often hear 23-year-olds talk like that, yet those were his words after the first padded practice. McPhearson wasn’t running...
Getty Avonte Maddox is one of three guys battling for the starting CB spot at Eagles training camp. It took Avonte Maddox less than 60 seconds to reveal what his biggest weakness was in 2020. The Philadelphia Eagles cornerback shouted it repeatedly into the Zoom call camera: “Eyes, eyes, eyes, eyes.” The 25-year-old is the presumptive starter opposite Darius Slay for a second straight season. Maddox, a fourth-round pick in 2018, missed six games due to injury last year but the Eagles seem content on keeping him on the outside. He certainly has the talent to thrive despite being slightly undersized (5-foot-9, 184 pounds) as evidenced by his breakout rookie campaign. The Pittsburgh product tallied two interceptions in 2018 while mostly manning the slot and earned praise from Pro Football Focus. Two injury-plagued years later — 22 out of 32 possible games — Maddox is trying to fine-tune the details of playing cornerback in the NFL under first-year secondary coach Dennard Wilson. Eyes on the prize. “That’s one thing I tell myself, I probably write it down in...
Getty Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Steven Nelson running back an interception. The Philadelphia Eagles caused a stir when they passed on a game-changing cornerback in the NFL draft (see: Asante Samuel Jr.). Maybe they were holding out for a Plan B option from the other side of the state. The Pittsburgh Steelers released veteran cornerback Steven Nelson back in March after he requested a change of scenery. The 28-year-old begged the Steelers not to “hold me hostage” in Twitter comments, following what appeared to be a curious money-saving move. But Nelson later revealed that Pittsburgh never asked him to take a pay cut, instead choosing to move on with two unproven youngsters: Justin Layne and Cameron Sutton. The Eagles were immediately linked to Nelson before the ink dried on his release papers. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Philadelphia remains intrigued by the former third-round pick (2015) and he’s heard from the Eagles and 13 other NFL teams since hitting the open market. Cornerback Steven Nelson’s market has been strong since becoming a free agent. Nelson has interest and has...
Getty Memphis RB Kenneth Gainwell has been loosely compared to Christian McCaffrey due to his dynamic play-making ability out of the backfield. The quest to find Miles Sanders’ perfect backfield mate may be over. Finally. The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Kenneth Gainwell in the fifth round (150th overall) on Saturday in a move hailed as a steal by most experts. The dual-threat running back out of Memphis opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns but his old tape showed an electric player, one who grew up a Philadelphia Eagles fan. Gainwell was a certifiable game-breaker in college who drew comparisons to Christian McCaffrey for his “dynamic athletic ability and well-developed route running.” (via Pro Football Network). He totaled 2,212 career all-purpose yards in two college seasons: 235 carries for 1,550 yards, 14 touchdowns — plus 57 receptions for 662 yards and three scores. Despite being slightly undersized, the 5-foot-11, 201-pounder was a willing blocker on passing downs as Micah Parsons found out. Parsons, the stud linebacker out of Penn State, was a first-round pick of the...

"Man, that was a 15-round fight. You traded blows, you just kind of went back and forth and we made one huge play at the end.” “That’s what it comes down to. Find a way to make a play and win a game.” West Virginia coach...

(CBS4) – Ryan McPhearson, the lead singer in the Colorado band Nightwolf, was critically hurt when a fatal fight broke out over the weekend between two motorcycle gangs at an Arvada restaurant.
