UCLA is home to one of the most popular NCAA football teams. They’re gearing up for another fun season. UCLA football hasn’t had the most successful seasons the past few years, but they’ve certainly held a name for themselves. According to College Choice, they rank 22nd out of the top 25 best colleges for college football. Head coach Chip Kelly seems to be leading the team on the right path and was recently signed to a four-year extension contract through 2025. Kelly first joined UCLA in 2017 and in 2021, he led the Bruins to an 8-4 season. This was their first winning season since 2015. Though the Bruins haven’t had the best success in the past, their run with Kelly seems promising and with his extension, they seem to have a solid chance at another winning season. LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA football coach Chip Kelly agreed to a new four-year contract Friday after leading the Bruins to their best season since 2015. The agreement came two days before the $9 million buyout on Kelly’s original contract would have expired. Kelly said he had discussions about returning to Oregon last month before the Ducks hired Dan Lanning. “We are extremely appreciative of the entire UCLA administration for their support of our football program,” Kelly said in a statement. “We have a tremendous amount of gratitude for our players and staff. Their tireless work and commitment to our vision have built a great foundation. We are excited to continue to build this program into something that makes the UCLA fanbase proud.” UCLA had its first winning season in Kelly’s tenure in 2021. It went 8-4 and closed with three straight wins, including a 62-33 blowout over Southern California. The Bruins earned their first bowl appearance since 2017, but could not play in the Holiday Bowl against North Carolina State due to COVID-19 protocols. Kelly is 64-32 as a...
LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who led the Pac-12 in total offense this season, will return for a fifth year with the Bruins in 2022. Thompson-Robinson announced his decision Monday on social media. “I believe 2021 ended short so WE can go farther in 2022!,” Thompson-Robinson wrote on Twitter. Thompson-Robinson was a first-team selection on the All-Pac-12 team and was a second-team choice by coaches. He averaged 274.4 yards on offense and was second in the conference with 21 passing touchdowns. The Bruins went 8-4 in 2021, the program’s first winning campaign in Chip Kelly’s four years in charge. They did not play in the Holiday Bowl against North Carolina State on Dec. 28 due to COVID-19 issues. Thompson-Robinson will not have some key players in the huddle with him next season. Wide receiver Kyle Phillips, tight end Greg Dulcich and offensive tackle Sean Rhyan announced they are entering the NFL draft. All three were all-conference first-team selections by the coaches while Phillips made the first-team AP list with Dulcich and Rhyan on the second team. ___...
The UCLA football program went nearly two full seasons without having COVID-19 protocols eliminate a game from the schedule. Coach Chip Kelly had taken great pride in the program’s success in protecting UCLA’s “ecosystem” but that success changed Tuesday afternoon when the Bruins had to bow out of the Holiday Bowl against No. 18 North Carolina State, just hours before kickoff. While the postseason didn’t work out the way they wanted it to, the Bruins (8-4 overall) did produce their first winning season in four years. Among the questions to be addressed this offseason will be whether UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond decides to extend Kelly’s contract. Jarmond has continued to speak highly of Kelly as the director of the football program. Kelly would begin the fifth year of his current contract with UCLA on Jan. 16, the date would also void the $9 million buyout for both sides. The only thing set for 2022 is the upcoming schedule that begins with three nonconference games at home. It would be the first three of the...
With Lincoln Riley going to USC, his former quarterback Spencer Rattler might link up with Pac-12 South rival UCLA by way of the transfer portal. Spencer Rattler may go from being Lincoln Riley’s starting quarterback at Oklahoma to the signal-caller of one of USC’s biggest rivals. Rattler took a major hit in perception this season. He was seen as the Heisman Trophy frontrunner and the bona-fide lock to be the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. After getting benched in favor of Caleb Williams at Red River, Rattler was inevitably heading for the transfer portal. While him leaving Oklahoma makes a ton of sense after what happened, his connection to Riley may deepen. Is Rattler about to go all Troy Aikman on us and leave Norman for the UCLA Bruins?Spencer Rattler transfer rumors: Former OU QB projected to UCLAWhile is only one projection made by 247Sports, the fit to UCLA makes a great deal of sense. UConn on Thursday hired former UCLA coach Jim Mora, who also coached two NFL teams, to lead the Huskies. The 59-year-old Mora has been out of coaching and working as a television analyst after spending six seasons (2012-17) leading UCLA to a 46-30 record. “Jim is a proven winner, a man of integrity and he possesses the experience and energy to lead our football program back to success,” UConn athletic director David Benedict said in a statement. Mora coached four seasons in the NFL, three with the Atlanta Falcons and one with the San Francisco 49ers, going 31-33. UConn has been searching for a head coach since Randy Edsall stepped down in September. Mora and UConn agreed to a five-year deal that runs through the 2026 season, with a first-year salary of $1.5 million, according to the school’s announcement. He will be added to the UConn staff immediately as an assistant coach, allowing him the ability to do some coaching in practice with the current players and, most importantly, to have full privileges in recruiting. “This program is loaded with...

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona quarterback Jordan McCloud is out for the rest of the season after suffering right knee and ankle injuries against UCLA. Wildcats coach Jedd Fisch said Monday McCloud is expected to have surgery this week. McCloud was injured in the fourth quarter of Arizona’s 34-16 loss to UCLA Saturday night when his leg got twisted up while he was getting sacked. A transfer from South Florida, McCloud started two games after beginning the season as the backup to Gunner Cruz and Will Plummer. The sophomore threw for 481 yards and two touchdowns in three games this season. Fisch said Cruz, who started the first two games of the season, will start against Colorado on Saturday. ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25. In 105 years of Pac-12 football, there has never been a season like 2021. Never have past struggles and future opportunity collided with such force. Never have reputation and cash flow teetered to such extent. Never, ever, has success on the field connected so directly with success at the negotiating table. And within this essential fall, one day — Saturday, Sept. 11 — stands as the most significant, with three reputation-shaping games against marquee programs from the SEC and Big Ten: — Washington’s stunning loss last week might have diminished the public appeal of its duel with Michigan, but the upset actually raised the stakes in the Big House. Was the loss to Montana a fluke, or a sign of steep decline from one of the Pac-12’s most important programs? — Colorado’s showdown with Texas A&M provides the conference a second opportunity to topple the SEC — to prove UCLA’s rousing victory wasn’t an outlier and the Pac-12 can, in fact, hold its own against the king. — And then there’s Oregon, the two-time defending conference champion, with the most...
LSU traveled West for their season opener, and one college football expert is predicting they’ll be upset. After a 15-0 run to the national title in 2019, the LSU Tigers went 5-5 last season amid player opt-outs, injuries, etc. A mulligan in the pandemic-impacted season is obvious, as head coach Ed Orgeron regroups with new offensive and defensive coordinators this year. The Tigers open their 2021 season with a road trip to take on UCLA Saturday night. The Bruins started Chip Kelly’s fourth season as head coach with a 44-10 domination of Hawaii last Saturday. LSU will obviously be a bigger challenge, but the Bruins won’t be pushovers. One college football expert put LSU on upset alertAs the shine of a national title fades, Dan Wolken of USA TODAY put Orgeron atop his list of coaches on the hot seat going into the season. If another season trends closer to .500 than a premier bowl game, speculation on Orgeron’s status will ramp up. It’s Week 1 for LSU, but it’s the second game of the college football season for UCLA. The two collide in the Rose Bowl on Saturday. Here’s how to watch online. College football is back and it’s UCLA’s second helping of Week One as they get ready to host No. 16 LSU in a non-conference between the Pac-12 and SEC in Pasadena. For LSU, it’s a chance to open the season with a strong road win against a Chip Kelly-led program that looks much improved so far on the year. The Tigers hope to be in the SEC West conversation this year and ultimately work their way up toward a top ranking. A year after much of the roster was in a rebuild following the success of their 2019 team, the Tigers are primed to rebound. Fans will get an appetizer with a light Week 0 slate but we’re diving headfirst into it with college football picks straight-up and against the spread. Few things are indicative of how ravenous college football fans are to watch their favorite sport than Week 0. The games on the slate are rarely all that enticing in the grand scheme of things but, after eight months of having nothing to wet the whistle, fans will take anything they can get. And the 2021 college football season shows us just that. There are different levels of bad, though, and the Aggies stand as proof as that. Details are here, and thanks for your support. The game has been over for hours, and I’m just sitting down to type. I needed time to digest the masterpiece. Time to watch the replay of the final sequence. Time to ponder UCLA’s tournament ascent. Time to consider what comes next for Bruins, and for the Pac-12. The 2020-21 season, which began with a cluster of cancellations, ended with a work of art. The entirety of the past 17 days, in fact, have provided a launch point for the conference: — Five teams in the second round. — Four teams in the Sweet 16. — Three teams in the Elite Eight. — One team in the Final Four. For the first time in years, Pac-12 basketball has something to build on. (So does Pac-12 football, and we’ll address that issue momentarily.) Let’s start with a double-down: We wrote earlier this week that if the Pac-12...
Former Michigan football star Zach Charbonnet will transfer to the UCLA football program. After two years playing for Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan football team, running back Zach Charbonnet will transfer to be closer to home, as he will suit up for Chip Kelly’s UCLA Bruins in 2021. UCLA football fans should be ecstatic over landing a native son as talented as Charbonnet. While he and the Michigan program had a down season a year ago, Charbonnet had 726 rushing yards on 149 carries for 11 touchdowns as a true freshman in 2019. Because last year did not count toward eligibility, Charbonnet has three years of eligibility left to be used with the Bruins if he so chooses. pic.twitter.com/VqyEzq5SjA — Zach Charbonnet (@zachcharbon) January 30, 2021 What should we make of the mass exodus of talent from Michigan? After a good, but not great first five years in Ann Arbor, Harbaugh’s team struggled mightily, albeit in the midst of a global pandemic. Quarterbacking issues gave way to defensive issues and Michigan was unable to win a single game at home this season. The Wolverines...
Davis Mills was flat on his back Saturday in the Rose Bowl. He had thrown what he said was the first pick-6 of his life, and was knocked down trying to stop UCLA cornerback Jay Shaw’s return as the Bruins were finishing off a run of 31 straight points. The third second-half interception for Mills, all of which led to UCLA touchdowns, seemed to be the final blow for a team that was exhausted after spending all of December on the road and had let a 17-point halftime lead slip away. But Mills and Stanford bounced back one final time. The senior threw two touchdown passes in the final 2:34 of the regulation to Simi Fehoko, and then hit Fehoko again in the second overtime as Stanford (4-2) put a fitting ending to an improbable season with a 48-47 double-overtime victory over the Bruins (3-4) “There’s always going to be a special place in my heart for this group,” Stanford coach David Shaw said. “Unprecedented difficulties. … This team should go down in Stanford history as one...
Stanford saved its wildest game of the season for last. Cardinal linebacker Stephen Herron got in the backfield and stopped Britain Brown on a two-point conversion in double overtime, giving Stanford a 48-47 win Saturday night at the Rose Bowl and ensuring its season would end on an improbable four-game winning streak. The Cardinal (4-2) led by 17 at halftime, gave up 31 straight points to start the second half, and then scored two touchdowns in the final 2:34 of regulation to tie the game. Simi Fehoko set a school record with 16 catches for 230 yards and three touchdowns, including a 14-yard pass from Davis Mills in the second overtime. UCLA (3-3) answered with a 21-yard touchdown pass from backup Chase Griffin to Kyle Philips on fourth-and-18, but went for two and were denied. UCLA scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Chase Griffin to tight end Greg Dulcich on the second play of the first overtime, but Stanford answered when graduate transfer Isaiah Sanders scored on a 2-yard run, the second time...
In a season of constant adjustment, Stanford had one more this week. The Cardinal’s game today against UCLA at the Rose Bowl will kick off at 4 p.m. and be televised by ESPN. When the matchup was announced last weekend, the game was slotted for 5 p.m. and ESPN2. At the time of last week’s announcement, the Pac-12 had Washington and USC playing for the Pac-12 championship on Friday night, with Oregon and Colorado matched up to play today. But Washington was unable to play for the title, sidelined by COVID-19 issues, and was replaced by Oregon. The Ducks beat USC on Friday for the title despite finishing second to Washington in the Pac-12 North and losing to Cal and Oregon State. Stanford’s season has been uneven from the start. Some two hours before the season opener at Oregon, Cardinal quarterback Davis Mills was sidelined by what turned out to be a false-positive coronavirus result. Mills and receiver Connor Wedington were unable to play against the Ducks, who beat Stanford. The quarterback...

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — UCLA announced Thursday it will decline a potential bowl invitation, a decision led by its football players and fully supported by coach Chip Kelly and athletic director Martin Jarmond. “We are a player-led team, and we listened to our players when it came to making this decision,” Kelly said. The decision means the Bruins will not play in a bowl game for the third time in Kelly’s three seasons as coach. UCLA is currently in its longest streak of missing bowls since the nine-season streak from 1966-74 when the Pac-8 Conference’s bowl participation was limited to the conference champion playing in the Rose Bowl. The Bruins had qualified for bowls in six of the seven seasons before Kelly’s hiring. It was not immediately clear whether UCLA would receive a bowl invitation. To date, 11 bowls have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. UCLA’s decision marks the 11th team to decline a bowl invitation this season. (© Copyright 2020 CBS Broadcasting Inc. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Certainty has been in short supply during a college football season played amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as UCLA and Stanford know all too well headed into their game on Saturday. The Bruins played a game on less than 48 hours’ notice. The Cardinal relocated their entire team because of coronavirus restrictions in their home county, moving from the Bay Area to Seattle to Corvallis, Oregon, and now to Santa Barbara, California, this month. “It hasn’t been super easy,” Stanford tight end Tucker Fisk said. “It’s not, like, the most fun traveling around, especially during COVID. But I mean it’s just a testament to how well we’ve done as a team, how well we’ve been able to adapt to these adversities that have been put in front of us.” Stanford (3-2) finally has some clarity, knowing its game at the Rose Bowl will be the season finale after declining to participate in a bowl. For UCLA (3-3), the postseason is still in doubt. The Pac-12 is requiring teams to finish with at least a .500 record to...
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/AP) — Cal was hoping Sunday that enough players will emerge from the COVID protocol this week to allow the team to meet Arizona in a final Pac-12 Conference weekend showdown. The Golden Bears had their nationally televised game against Washington State cancelled just hours before kickoff Saturday after a player tested positive for COVID and several of his teammates were forced to go into the contact protocol. Cal didn’t have enough healthy players to allow the game to be played. The Golden Bears-Arizona game was one of a final weekend games announced by the league Sunday. Other contests will include Washington at No. 16 Southern California in the Pac-12 championship game. Oregon will face No. 21 Colorado at Memorial Coliseum in Southern California on Saturday. The winner of that game could slide into a rescheduled title game if the Trojans or Huskies are unable to play due to COVID-19 issues. Saturday’s games also include Washington State at Utah, Stanford at UCLA, and Arizona State at Oregon State. Arizona will face California at a site and...
In a football season that already has been filled with stops and starts, Cal will try to reboot again Saturday when it visits Oregon State. The Bears are coming off a surprising 34-10 loss at UCLA last Sunday, absorbing a big hit to their ambition of challenging for a Pac-12 North title. With only five games left on their shortened schedule, they already have a sense of urgency. Could Game 2 vs. the Beavers (0-2) be a must-win for the Bears? “It’s a short season,” outside linebacker Kuony Deng said, “and I feel like you want to make the most out of every opportunity. That’s how I’ll answer that question.” Here are four ways the Bears (0-1) expect to improve their play on Saturday in Corvallis, Oregon: 1. Readiness It has a lot of definitions: Intensity, focus, call it what you want. The Bears acknowledge they weren’t fully prepared for a game last Sunday, just two days after learning their trip to Arizona State was canceled and they would be facing UCLA instead....
The quarterfinals will be without defenders Aaron Moldonado and Stanley McKenzie on Sunday morning. Two Nose Guards were expected to be key contributors – listed as a Moldovan starter – and in their absence Sophomore Brett Johnson will start in place instead. The Bears begin their unprecedented season in many unexpected ways. The COVID-19 eruptions in Arizona and Utah have driven Cal and UCLA together for unexpected competition. A positive COVID-19 test on the defensive line of the leg was due to a non-competitive game against Washington a week ago. As a result of their isolation and the communication route forced by the Berkeley City Public Health Department, the Bears lost soldiers in that position. Johnson, who replaces Maldonado, is no stranger to this position – Sophomore started nine games on the defensive line last season. He switched to defensive ending in 2020, and Redshirt Sophomore J.H. Davis will be right there. Three senior veterans Jinde Johnson are surrounded by a foot defensive lead against the Bruins. Jasper Kenzo Sundine covers football and is a sub special issues teacher. BERKELEY (CBS SF) – Hours after having their second football game canceled due to the coronavirus, the California Golden Bears will have their season start this Sunday. The team announced Friday it would play UCLA at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, with an early kickoff time at 9 a.m. “The date became available after both the Golden Bears’ and Bruins’ previously scheduled games were canceled. Neither of the teams’ opponents – Arizona State for Cal, Utah for UCLA – were able to play due to COVID-19 protocols,” Cal Athletics said in a statement. “As I’ve told our team many times, the one thing we have learned is to expect the unexpected,” head coach Justin Wilcox said. “We appreciate all of the hard work that everyone has done on so many levels to allow us to play this weekend, and we are thankful the opportunity has arisen to play at UCLA.” Earlier on Friday, the conference canceled the Cal-ASU game set for Saturday after several Arizona State players and coaching staff tested positive for COVID-19, including head coach Herm Edwards. Under conference policy, the game will be declared a no contest.” Cal vs. Arizona State canceledUtah’s game against Arizona scheduled for...
PASADENA (CBSLA) – The Pac-12 has moved UCLA’s home game against Utah from Friday to Saturday after a Utah player tested positive for COVID-19 last week, forcing Utah to cancel its season opener. (Getty Images) UCLA will now face Utah Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Utah had to cancel its season opener this past Saturday against Arizona after one of its players tested positive for coronavirus and the school was forced to then isolate additional players under contract-tracing protocols. Arizona did not have the minimum number of scholarship players available to field a team. The Pac-12 has established minimum thresholds to play a game. A team must have at least 53 scholarship players available to participate, including at least seven offensive linemen, one quarterback and four defensive linemen. UCLA will look to bounce back against the Utes after it fell to Colorado in its...
Through the first week of UCLA football camp in preparation for its season opener on Nov. 9 at Colorado, Bruins coach Chip Kelly said that nobody on the team or staff has tested positive for coronavirus, but he did confirm on Friday that senior defensive end Steven Mason is in quarantine after being exposed to someone who has tested positive. Kelly didn’t say how long Mason would be in quarantine, and also said the person Mason was exposed to was not a member of the team. “We had a couple other kids (in quarantine) during the summer (for the same reasons),” Kelly said. “It’s safety precautions of how to handle it if someone has exposure to someone that has been exposed. It’s part of the contact tracing part of it.” During camp, a lot of players have talked about the importance of protecting their ‘ecosystem’ when it comes to the coronavirus, which Kelly and his staff have drilled into the players’ minds. “Our players have done a really good job in protecting their ecosystems,” Kelly said....

The latest has washed ashore over the past two months, with layoffs and furloughs at the conference office, executive bonuses that were paid before the staff downsizing, the expenses incurred in San Francisco and the absence of football on the Pac-12 Networks. Earlier this week, Scott appeared on the Bickley and Marotta radio show on Arizona Sports 98.7 for an informative, candid conversation that touched on all the touchy touch points. I’d encourage everyone to listen to the full 15 minutes — the first half focuses on the football season — but here are a few relevant snippets. • Whether the Pac-12 is wasteful with executive bonuses and rent paid in San Francisco: “There’s a perception out there that’s just incorrect, in my view. The UCLA Bruins have several football players with coronavirus. According to Eric Sondheimer, the LA County Health Director announced Wednesday that eight members of the football team have coronavirus. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football) As of right now, the Bruins aren’t quarantining as a team. LA County Health Director just said eight UCLA football players tested positive for COVID-19. — eric sondheimer (@latsondheimer) August 5, 2020 This is the last thing you want to see if you’re a fan of the Bruins. The season starts in September, and UCLA has eight cases. While it’s not as bad as some teams that have been hammered, it’s certainly not good. That much is for sure. Will UCLA still play football this season? I’m sure they’ll try, but California is in a weird place right now with coronavirus. It seems like there’s not much interest in all at allowing large gatherings. If gatherings are limited to 10 people or less, then I’m not sure how the hell you’re supposed to practice. There’s a real...

At least half the teams in each division must agree to have a regular schedule in the autumn for the season to move forward.
