Disney will not be streaming its latest animated film Lightyear on its streaming service in the Middle East after it was banned in theaters. Lightyear featured a kiss between two lesbian characters. The United Arab Emirates announced its ban on the film through the Media Regulatory Office of the country's Ministry of Culture and Youth. Saudi Arabia followed suit, announcing its own ban soon after. The Disney+ series Baymax will also not be released since it includes also LGBT characters. However, movies such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Eternals will remain on the service, as they skew to older audiences and were shown in Emirati theaters with various instances of censorship throughout. Motorsports website Racer said East "took three USAC national driving titles, starting in 2004 with the USAC National Midgets and twice more with back-to-back USAC Silver Crown championships in 2012 and 2013." Racer added, "His score in the 2012 Sumar Classic Terre Haute finale was historic as it put him on the exclusively short list of nine drivers in USAC history who’ve won on dirt and pavement tracks in all three national divisions: Silver Crown, National Sprint Car and National Midget." In 2001, East won a race at the USAC National Midget event at just 16 years old – the youngest racer to ever accomplish the feat. East – the son of USAC Hall of Fame car builder Bob East – won the Rookie of the Year award in 2001 after winning three performances and becoming the winningest USAC National Midget Rookie in more than a quarter century. The racing world reacted to the tragic news of the stabbing death of the NASCAR star. Two-time NASCAR champion Todd Bodine said, "Very sad to hear of the tragic incident...

Energy Sec. Jennifer Granholm said she thinks President Biden will meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin-Salman to talk gas prices when he visits Saudi Arabia next month.  'I think he will meet with the Saudi crown prince,' Granholm told CNN's State of the Union, after President Biden said days ago that he would not meet with the crown prince.  Granholm says a meeting will take place, but her insistence is only the latest in a line of mixed messaging on the trip.   'I'm not going to meet with MBS. I'm going to an international meeting and he's going to be part of it,' Biden told reporters Friday at the White House before he left to spend the weekend in Rehoboth Beach, Del. Biden will be in Jeddah in mid-July to attend a meeting of the GCC plus 3 summit to talk oil production. While there he will meet with the aging Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Energy Sec. HALLE, Germany (AP) — Bernd Bransch, who captained East Germany at its only World Cup appearance in a symbolic Cold War win over West Germany, has died. He was 77. Bransch’s former club Hallescher FC said in a statement Sunday that he had died on Saturday following “a long, severe illness.” Bransch was East Germany’s equivalent of the charismatic West German star Franz Beckenbauer. Both men captained their national teams and both played as a sweeper, sitting deep in defense with space to start counterattacks. When they met at the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, it was Bransch’s team that came out the surprise winner, beating West Germany 1-0 with a goal from Jürgen Sparwasser. Both teams qualified from the first group stage, but East Germany was eliminated in the next round while West Germany won the tournament with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands in the final. Bransch’s biggest career success came two years later when he won the Olympic gold medal with East Germany, coming on as a substitute in the 3-1 win over Poland in...
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — More than a week off between playoff games can seem like an eternity for any team. The two-time defending Stanley Cup champions are hoping the extended break they earned with a second-round sweep of the Florida Panthers will benefit them in their quest for a three-peat. By the time they open the Eastern Conference final Wednesday night against either the Carolina Hurricanes or New York Rangers, the Lightning will not have played since May 23. The Hurricanes and Rangers play Game 7 of their second-round series Monday night, with the winner hosting the first two games of the conference final. “People always ask is it better to have time off or not,” coach Jon Cooper said. “I guess the true answer comes depending on the next series, and how you play.” The defending champs, in the East final for the sixth time in eight years, feel they have the leadership and experience to handle the team’s longest layoff between postseason games in more than a decade. “You’re not really expecting this much time off at this...
Q: Quarters, we talking quarters? How silly is that, we talking about quarters, man? (In my Allen Iverson voice.) – Douglas. A: In my years of doing this, outside of summer league I can’t recall such a conversion about the amount of quarters a team has won in a series. I get it, Celtics coach Ime Udoka attempted to use it as motivation for his team after Boston’s Game 1 loss, pointing to how they had won three of the four quarters. And now the ledger of quarters in Boston’s favor in these East finals is 10-2, even with the Heat ahead 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. But even in the ballroom at their team hotel the Heat utilized for Sunday’s media session, Erik Spoelstra had the most quizzical of looks when asked about the Celtics’ dominance in quarters won. It was almost as if he wanted to know when that had become a thing. The answer, of course, is since Tuesday. “At the end of the game, the clock turns to zero, did we win or did we lose?”...
Kyle Lowry and P.J. Tucker were on the court Saturday morning for the Miami Heat ahead of Saturday night’s Game 3 at TD Garden against the Boston Celtics in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals. For the Heat, it was a significant step, considering Lowry had missed eight of the previous 10 games due to a strained left hamstring, and considering that Tucker bruised his left knee in Game 2 to the degree that there were initial thoughts of requiring an MRI. “They are both going to do their whole routine with the intention of playing,” Spoelstra said. “So, yes, they both were involved in shootaround.” Lowry has missed the past two weeks, initially injured April 22 in the Heat’s Game 3 loss during the first round to the Atlanta Hawks, a series the Heat won 4-1. He then returned, only to be sidelined in the East semifinals against the Philadelphia 76ers, which the Heat won 4-2. Spoelstra stressed that the setback against the 76ers was not a setback in terms of Lowry’s rehab. “He wanted to play Game 5 last...
Still, fringe candidates are luring GOP voters and winning key races. The Republican Party’s radical right flank is making inroads among voters and winning key primaries east of the Mississippi. But out West, among the five states that held their 2022 primary elections on May 17, a string of GOP candidates for office who deny the 2020’s presidential election results and have embraced various conspiracies were rejected by Republicans who voted for more mainstream conservatives. This article was produced by Voting Booth, a project of the Independent Media Institute. In Pennsylvania, Douglas Mastriano, an election denier and white nationalist, won the GOP’s nomination for governor. He received 587,772 votes, which was 43.96 percent of the vote in a low turnout primary. One-quarter of Pennsylvania’s 9 million registered voters cast ballots. In Idaho, by contrast, Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin, who also claimed Joe Biden’s election was illegitimate and has campaigned at white supremacist rallies, according to the Western States Center, an Oregon-based group that monitors the far right, lost her bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination to incumbent Gov. Brad Little....

Abu Dhabi, UAE (CNN)As Europe tries to stymie Moscow's war effort in Ukraine by weaning itself off Russia's oil, Middle Eastern nations appear to be the only producers with enough capacity to compensate. The question is, do any of them have the technical ability, and crucially, the willingness, to step up? Don't hold your breath, say oil analysts. Western states have imposed a host of sanctions to punish Russia for its war in Ukraine, but the European Union is yet to halt imports of oil and gas, Moscow's main source of revenue, to avoid hurting their own economies. A potential EU ban on Russian oil could lead to a shortfall of 2.2 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil and 1.2 million bpd of petroleum products, according to the International Energy Agency. Europe cant live without Russian gas. Can this tiny Middle East country help? While Middle East nations hold almost half the world's proven oil reserves and much of its spare production capacity, lack of investment in infrastructure, conflict, political alliances, and sanctions are among the reasons...
A Connecticut man cashed in big after winning the top prize of a CT Lottery scratch-off ticket, lotto officials announced. In New Haven County, Hamden resident Bernard Tucker, Jr. is $100,000 richer after winning the grand prize on a "$100,000 50th Anniversary" CT Lottery ticket that was sold at the Anas Food Mart on Foxon Road in East Haven on Monday, April 25. Players of "$100,000 50th Anniversary" must match numbers to the "winning numbers" to win a prize. That prize can then be multiplied up to a grand total of $100,000.  According to CT Lottery, “when a winning scratch ticket is validated through a Lottery Retailer's terminal, the remaining number of unclaimed prizes for that prize level is automatically updated reflecting one less prize. Until the individual or group presents their winning ticket for claim at CT Lottery Headquarters, the identity of a winner is unknown.” Other lucky lotto players who celebrated big wins in Connecticut include:  On Friday, April 22, Bridgeport resident Sylvia Santiago won $20,000 playing "20X Cash 7th Edition" on a ticket sold at the...
(CNN)Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN that Ukraine is not willing to give up territory in the eastern part of the country to end the war with Russia, and Ukraine's military is prepared to fight Moscow's military in the Donbas region in a battle he says could influence the course of the entire war.Zelensky said in an exclusive interview Friday with CNN's Jake Tapper from the office of the president in Kyiv that his country has no guarantee that Russia wouldn't try again to seize Kyiv if it is able to capture Donbas."This is why it is very important for us to not allow them, to stand our ground, because this battle ... it can influence the course of the whole war," Zelensky said. Exclusive: Zelensky says world should be prepared for possibility Putin could use nuclear weapons"Because I don't trust the Russian military and Russian leadership," he continued. "That is why we understand that the fact that we fought them off and they left, and they were running away from Kyiv -- from the north, from Chernihiv and from...
Tens of thousands of Russian soldiers will soon descend on the Donbas region as part of efforts to outnumber Ukrainian troops in the east by five to one - but military chiefs insist it still won't be enough to win the war. The Kremlin's offensive, which it hopes will result in a decisive face-saving battle, is expected to begin by the end of the week, according to some western sources. Moscow is building up troops and equipment in a number of locations along the border, satellite images and reports suggest. Forces will look to reinforce efforts around Izyum, south-east of Kharkiv, before pushing further south to seize the city of Slovyansk, the Times reports via a US think tank. The plan would then be to advance to the south-east to encircle a Ukrainian contingent. General Sir Richard Barrons, a former British military chief, told the paper: '[The Russians] will try to put more ground forces in the face of the Ukrainians at once to get the force ratios right, knowing the Ukrainians in the east are in very well-prepared positions.'  However,...
Q: Ira, will the Heat get a banner for finishing first in the East? — Billy. A: No, and it is just another way the NBA has marginalized its regular season. The team that advances to the NBA Finals is considered the conference champion, as is the case with the Heat’s 2020 Eastern Conference banner that hangs from the rafters at FTX Arena, after the Heat finished that regular season fifth in the East. In some ways, that is where traditional soccer standings have the edge on the NBA, giving the regular season proper due, considering the grueling 82-game grind, compared to needing to win just 12 games to become conference champion in the playoffs. It also is why you have seen some teams backing off at the top of the East. Basically, the regular-season conference championship is a celebration for about a day. Then you move on to the playoffs, planning for what ultimately matters in the NBA. Q: The demise of Duncan Robinson (by the “fans”) seems to have been greatly exaggerated. Maybe he won’t be starting, but...
OAKLAND — A Bay Area man has been resentenced from 60 years to life to 11 years with credit for 10, four years after he won his appeal in the killing of an award-winning East Bay artist, court records show. Gregory Hall, 68, pleaded no contest to murder and received an 11-year prison term that was finalized last year, records show. In 2016, he was sentenced to life with no chance for parole until after 60 years for fatally stabbing 67-year-old Michael Thorn Bradley in 2012. But two years after his sentence, Hall’s murder conviction was overturned when a California appeals court ruled that Judge Allan Hymer shouldn’t have allowed Hall to be questioned about a misdemeanor knife possession conviction during his trial. Hall took the stand and testified he wasn’t a violent person, which Hymer ruled opened the door to questioning about the prior knife case. First District Appellate Court justices wrote, though, that the misdemeanor conviction “did not contradict any statement defendant made on the stand, or to the police, and it remained highly likely to be misunderstood...

Baylor shook off an early loss in last season’s Big 12 Tournament to race to a national championship. The Bears can only hope they can do it again. Baylor’s repeat bid for a national title starts in the East Region against Norfolk State. The Bears are the top seed in the East and open the tournament Thursday close to home in Fort Worth, Texas. The Bears (26-6) are a No. 1 seed for the second straight season and only the second time in program history. Their potential path out of the region — which plays Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games in Philadelphia — includes No. 8 North Carolina, No. 4 UCLA and No. 2 Kentucky. Baylor, which still has never won a Big 12 Tournament men’s title, won six straight games last season and beat Gonzaga in Indianapolis to win the school’s first national championship. Baylor won five straight games before it was upset by Oklahoma in the Big 12 tourney quarterfinals. “I think first nobody likes losing, and when you lose it recalibrates you, makes you hungrier,”...

For as showy as a Wednesday victory over the league-leading Phoenix Suns might have been, what benefits the Miami Heat more at this stage of the season are a few sensible wins. Because not all victories are created equally in a playoff race. With the Eastern Conference race so tight at the top, an argument could be made of Friday night’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at FTX Arena having greater meaning than anything that could have been achieved in what turned into Wednesday’s blowout loss to the Suns. For that matter, the same could be said about a victory this coming Tuesday over the lottery-bound Detroit Pistons having more meaning than a Saturday night victory over the surging Minnesota Timberwolves. Why? Because conference games mean more, potentially far more, when it comes to playoff tiebreakers. The NBA’s first playoff tiebreaker is head-to-head record. The Heat finished their season series against the Milwaukee Bucks in a 2-2 tie. Should the Heat lose their March 21 road game against the Philadelphia 76ers, that season series also would end in a 2-2...
Hundreds of storm clean-up efforts are underway across Australia's east coast after two days of torrential rain - but there's another week of downpours still on the way.  A startling map shows a huge rain bomb will dump up to 300mm of rain over parts of NSW and Queensland over the next seven days.  The accumulated rainfall model updated on Wednesday night shows an increase in expected total amounts of rain - with the entire east coast forecast to get at least 100mm. There will also be widespread areas that will see 150mm to 200mm and 'some pockets' that will get in excess of 300mm with a flood warning in place for seven rivers.  An updated accumulated rainfall model released on Wednesday night shows some areas will receive 300mm (pictured)  Seven major rivers in Australia's eastern states are set to flood as rainfall lashes the country (pictured: Sydney on Wednesday)  'These models are likely to chop and change over the next few days, however, the signals are there for a significant risk of both flash and riverine flooding,' NSW Incident...
Once upon a duplicate game, there were Three Little Pigs, each playing at 3NT after East bid spades. West, a Big Bad Wolf, led a spade. (Every West in this game was a BBW.) The first Little Pig captured East’s queen, cashed a second spade and took the A-K of diamonds, hoping for six diamonds, two spades and a club. But West discarded, and East won the next diamond and led the queen of clubs. Down one, and West ate up the Little Pig out of sheer contempt for his dummy play. TRICK TWO Pig #2 led a diamond to dummy’s nine at the second trick, a play made of sticks. If East had won, South could’ve come to the ten to take two more spades. But East found the remarkable play of ducking, and South won only eight tricks — and was eaten up. The third Little Pig built a house of bricks. He cashed another spade at Trick Two, then led a diamond to the nine. He was sure of nine tricks. West was so impressed that he...
The Russian president on Tuesday reiterated his demand for guarantees from the U.S. and its allies that NATO will not expand eastward, blaming the West for "tensions that are building up in Europe."  Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech at a meeting with Russia's top military brass came just days after Moscow submitted draft security documents demanding that NATO deny membership to Ukraine and other former Soviet countries and roll back the alliance’s military deployments in Central and Eastern Europe — bold ultimatums that are almost certain to be rejected.  The demands — contained in a proposed Russia-U.S. security treaty and a security agreement between Moscow and NATO — were drafted amid soaring tensions over a Russian troop buildup near Ukraine that has stoked fears of a possible invasion. Russia has denied it has plans to attack its neighbor but pressed for legal guarantees that would rule out NATO expansion and weapons deployment there.  EUROPEAN UNION LEADERS PRESS RUSSIA TO RESUME PEACE TALKS WITH UKRAINE  Russian President Vladimir Putin addresses an extended meeting of the Russian Defense Ministry Board at the National...
BOSTON (CBS) — The game between the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills in Week 16 is staying put. The deadline for any changes to the Week 16 schedule was Tuesday, but the day came and went without an announcement from the NFL. So, the clash of the top two AFC East teams remains in the 1 p.m. slot. That was the original scheduling for the game, but considering the stakes, there was some thought that it might slide up to the 4:25 p.m. ET window or even perhaps Sunday Night Football. READ MORE: Pacioretty Scores Twice, Vegas Beats Depleted Bruins 4-1But that won’t be the case, as the Washington-Dallas game will remain on Sunday Night Football, and the Steelers-Chiefs game will remain in the national 4:25 p.m. window for CBS. ESPN’s Mike Reiss confirmed that on Wednesday morning that the Bills-Patriots game won’t be moving. The Patriots-Bills game on Dec. 26 will be played at 1 p.m. ET, per the NFL. When November began, the NFC East was all about the runaway Cowboys. Now in December, it could become about surging Washington (6-6) if it can beat Dallas (8-4) on Sunday. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM A division that was won by Washington in 2020 with a 7-9 record will be up for grabs — with even Philadelphia in the mix — should Dallas falter in this rivalry game. "It’s definitely a critical game," says Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, who is battling a right knee injury that has limited his production. "They’re playing very good football, I think, what like four wins in a row?" Correct, Zeke. "And they’re a little banged up but seems like they haven’t really missed much of a beat and they’ve been having good game plans." Washington also isn't feeding on the dregs of the league, with wins over Tampa Bay and Las Vegas during its recent streak. That string has occurred even though 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young has been sidelined. Quarterback Taylor Heinicke looks as if he's...
Antony Blinken on Sunday wouldn't rule out U.S. military action if Iranian leaders do not return to the negotiating table next month to resume discussions to prevent them from developing a nuclear weapon. 'The Iranians have now said that they're coming back to talks toward the end of November – we'll see if they actually do, that's going to be important,' the Secretary of State chuckled when speaking to CBS Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan. While Blinken said diplomacy is the preferred path forward, the administration is also exploring 'other options'. 'We were also looking at, as necessary, other options if Iran is not prepared to engage quickly in good faith,' Blinken said. 'To pick up where we left off in June when these talks were interrupted by the change in government in Iran, and to see if we can get back to mutual compliance – both countries coming back into the agreement as quickly as possible.' When Brennan pushed on if those options included potential military action, Blinken said: 'As we always say, every option is on the...
“The man finally got his due,” Unlucky Louie told me. Louie meant Harlow the Halo, my club’s luckiest player. His finesses always win and his errors never cost. “Harlow and I both played at four spades in a team match,” Louie said, “and West led the queen of clubs. Harlow won in dummy and led a trump to his jack. His finesse won, of course, but when he took the ace, West discarded. Harlow cashed the king and started the diamonds, but his luck ran out. East ruffed the third diamond and led the queen of hearts. Down one.” BETTER PLAY “My play was better,” Louie said. “I couldn’t let East win a trump trick to shift to hearts, so I led a trump at Trick Two — and played the six when East followed with the three. West won and led another club, and I won, took the ace of trumps, led to the ten of diamonds, picked up the trumps and ran the diamonds to pitch a heart.” “Well done,” I said. “Harlow’s luck couldn’t last forever.” “He’ll...
In this week spotlighting returns by Tom Brady to New England, Andy Reid to Philadelphia and Kevin Stefanski to Minnesota, don’t lose sight of the best matchup on the schedule. The Rams and Cardinals, both 3-0, meet for NFC West supremacy. Two potent offenses go at it in SoFi Stadium. Arizona is the only team to score 30 or more points in its first three games as quarterback Kyler Murray has been scintillating. Los Angeles’ new QB, Matthew Stafford, has thrown for 942 yards and nine touchdowns against one interception. “As far as being a competitor, these are the ones you’ve got to embrace,” Murray says. “The team’s expecting me to be my best on Sunday, that’s how I see it.” Sean McVay has never lost to the Cardinals in eight career meetings. The Rams have won eight straight games in the series, all under McVay. Arizona’s most recent win came in a 44-6 rout at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on January 2017. McVay was hired 19 days later. “I don’t know that there’s really an...
A look at what’s happening around the majors today: ___ NL EAST SHOWDOWN Zack Wheeler (14-9, 2.79 ERA) pitches for Philadelphia in the opener of a pivotal three-game series at Atlanta. Charlie Morton (13-6, 3.53) is on the mound for the Braves, who lead the NL East by 2 1/2 games over the Phillies with a few days left in the season. “I think you get to the end of the year and you look for an opportunity to get to the playoffs, and that’s exactly what we have,” Philadelphia manager Joe Girardi said. “That’s what we’re all looking forward to. It’s exciting. We have a shot.” Atlanta has led the division since Aug. 15 and is trying to win it for the fourth straight year. After leaving Atlanta, the Phillies finish the regular season with three games at Miami, while the Braves close at home with three games against the Mets, with a makeup game versus Colorado possible on Oct. 4 if it’s needed to decide the NL East. MIAMI (CBSMiami) — It has been a while. The last time the Dolphins beat the Buffalo Bills In South Florida was 2018. After a solid road performance in New England, in which the Dolphins won the turnover battle, the red zone battle and committed less penalties than the Patriots, Dolphins fans have good reason to be optimistic. The 17-16 week 1 win in the division and on the road sets this up a big early season game against Buffalo. “We’ve been a nation too long at war. If you’re 20 years old today, you have never known an America at peace.” – Joseph R. Biden, August 31st 2021 President Joe Biden, like any politician worth his salt, is trying to sell you something. He’s not selling hoodies like AOC or ghostwritten books like the ones that built Bernie’s lakehouse. No, he’s bottled up a different kind of snake oil: comfort and reassurance. Biden tells us we can leave Afghanistan with no real plan for protecting ourselves. That we can choose to finally embrace peace after a generation of conflict. That, in fact, the youth of today were robbed of knowing an America at peace. Biden even tells us that he can keep us safe with only drone strikes, despite the fact that the CIA just evacuated most of their informants from the country. And, oh, the CIA director and the Secretary of Defense both admit we’re about to be blind. As we approach a sacred anniversary on Sept. 11, let’s stop and recognize a few truths as Biden seeks...
Vince Lombardi, the incomparable football coach, was asked about losing gracefully. After all, even the most successful football teams lose an occasional game. Lombardi, a fierce competitor, was adamant. “Show me a good loser,” he said, “and I’ll show you a loser.” It’s a rare deal when declarer has no losers, but some are better than others. In today’s deal, a spade opening lead would have beaten four hearts, but West led the jack of diamonds. South had a chance. He won and cashed the ace, king and queen of clubs for a spade discard. He next led a trump. LAST CLUB East won, carefully took his ace of spades and led his last club. When South ruffed, West overruffed with the ace, and East’s high trump won the setting trick. South could succeed by losing a good loser. After he takes three clubs, he leads dummy’s fourth club and discards his last spade: a loser on a loser. The defenders can’t score their three high trumps separately. South loses two trumps and a club. DAILY QUESTION You hold: S...
“I read,” Cy the Cynic told me in the club lounge, “that the jellyfish has existed for 500 million years without having much of a brain. That gives hope to some of my partners.” Cy’s comment about marine life came after today’s deal. As West, Cy led the jack of spades against 3NT. Declarer won with dummy’s queen, led a heart to his ace and returned the nine of clubs: seven, four, queen. East then led a second spade, and South won, lost a club to Cy’s ace, won the third spade and had nine tricks: three spades, three hearts and three clubs. “I’d have had a better chance playing with a jellyfish,” Cy growled. AVOIDANCE When East takes the queen of clubs, he can place Cy with the ace. If South had it, he would have cashed it before finessing, and if his spades were K-x-x, he would have finessed in clubs the other way as an “avoidance” play. At Trick Three, East should lead a low diamond. South wins, but when Cy takes the ace of clubs, his...
“Simple Saturday” columns focus on improving basic technique and logical thinking. Defenders have two approaches against a notrump contract: They can establish and cash long cards in a suit, or they can prevent declarer from using his best suit so that he comes up short of winners. In today’s deal, West led the jack of spades against 3NT, and declarer won with the queen and next let the jack of diamonds ride. East hastily grabbed his queen to fire back a spade, returning his partner’s lead. THIRD SPADE That defense was inadequate. South won with the king, forced out East’s ace of diamonds, won the third spade in dummy and ran the diamonds. He ended with 10 tricks. East adopted the wrong approach. If West’s spades are K-J-10-x-x, the deck doesn’t have enough points for him to have an entry as well. East must instead try to stop declarer from using the diamonds. If East ducks the first diamond, South gets only one diamond trick and goes down against best defense. DAILY QUESTION You hold: S A 7 5 H...
Cy the Cynic continues to struggle with his weight. The closest he comes to dieting is erasing his computer’s browser history with all the diets he has Googled. “I hate myself,” Cy told me, “when I go to order a salad, and my mouth says, ‘I’ll have a triple cheeseburger with fries.'” Cy’s impulses also take over when he is declarer. Against today’s four hearts, West led the jack of diamonds (not best), and Cy won, led a trump to his hand and returned a spade to dummy’s king. East took the ace and led a second trump. The Cynic won and led the queen and a third spade, but East won and led his last trump. Then Cy’s fourth spade was a loser, and he also lost a club. Down one. TOO MANY When Cy led a trump from dummy at Trick Two, he took one round of trumps too many. He must lead the king of spades. East wins and leads a trump, but Cy wins, takes the queen of spades and loses a spade. He can win...
Cy the Cynic’s idea of justice: He gets what he deserves, and you get what’s coming to you. In a team match, both Souths played at 3NT, and West led the ten of hearts, riding to the jack. How should declarer continue? At one table, South tried a spade to dummy’s jack. He got what he had coming when East took the singleton king and returned a heart. South won in his hand and led a second spade to the ace. When East showed out, South led the queen and a fourth spade. He won the heart return in dummy and cashed the good fifth spade, but when he tried a diamond to his queen next, West won and took two hearts. Down one. NINE TRICKS When Cy was declarer, he saw that he needed only four spade tricks to make 3NT. At Trick Two, Cy led to dummy’s ace — and got what he deserved. When the king fell, he played three more rounds of spades and was sure of nine tricks. If East had played low on the...
More from: Mike Vaccaro Kevin Durants brilliant Game 5 puts him with these NBA legends This was an all-time performance from Kevin Durant MLB had no choice on sticky crackdown because players cant be trusted Its time to start viewing the Mets very differently Nets now have chance to be remembered for more than Big 3 MILWAUKEE — At the peak of his powers, Jason Kidd flashed a bashful smile and pretended he was limping. Or at least pretended to pretend. “Every day of rest you get in the playoffs,” Kidd said, “feels like a week in real time.” This was on the eve of the 2004 Eastern Conference semifinals, Game 6. The Nets had dropped the first two in Auburn Hills, Mich., to the Pistons, but they had roared back to win three in a row, including a breathtaking triple-overtime 127-120 win at The Palace. Now, they had a chance to close out the Pistons. And Kidd liked the Nets’ chances. “We tend to be able to sniff it when we have a shot,” Kidd said. “I think...
Unlucky Louie has been successful in business if not at bridge. “Did you start out with nothing?” I asked Louie, “or did you have an inheritance?” “My folks were so poor,” Louie replied somberly, “that at Christmas, we exchanged glances.” When Louie was declarer at today’s four spades, he let East’s king win the first diamond. Louie won the next diamond (not best defense), led the king of trumps to East’s ace and won the trump return. Louie then took the A-K of clubs and ruffed a club. When West discarded, Louie led a heart to dummy’s queen. East won and returned a heart, and Louie had to lose a second heart. THIRD CLUB Louie gave East-West a gift. He makes four spades by exchanging one loser for another. On the third club, Louie should pitch a heart. If West won, Louie would have the rest. When West discards, East can lead a heart, yielding a free finesse, or lead a club, setting up dummy’s fifth club. Either way, Louie gets his 10th trick. This week: loser-on-loser plays. “Some things are better left unsaid,” a player at my club told me, “which you realize after you’ve said them.” My friend had been East in today’s deal, playing with his wife in a duplicate game. North-South reached a pushy 3NT contract. “My wife led the deuce of hearts,” East said, “dummy played low, and I won with the queen and switched to the four of clubs. Declarer won with the ace and led a spade. When my wife took her ace, she led another heart. South won and ran the spades and clubs, making an overtrick.” WRONG THING “I told my wife she should have shifted to a diamond at Trick Four. I realized that was the wrong thing to say — when I wound up sleeping on the couch with the dog last night.” I suppose West (or East, at the second trick) might have found the diamond shift, but East, who knows he wants that shift if West gets in, could make it easier by winning the first heart with the king. Even if your partner is...

CONCORD — John Cristiano wasn’t even supposed to be here. Less than a week earlier, the San Ramon Valley girls varsity basketball coach had been hospitalized with a heart attack. Yet, against doctors’ orders, there he was Thursday night, with a courtside view to watch his Wolves outlast Carondelet, 56-48, in a battle of unbeaten teams, for a third consecutive East Bay Athletic League championship. “We were doing this for pops,” said Joe Cristiano, his son and one of three assistant coaches who took on extra duties after receiving the devastating news this week. “The doctor told him to step away from basketball. Of course, he had to show up. … We kept things as normal as possible, but there’s no replacing my dad. It felt really good to get a win for him.” The Wolves and Cougars traded leads throughout the first half, until junior Allison Stern sent up a heave from beyond half court as the buzzer sounded to pull even heading into intermission. Junior Natalie Pasco sank another 3-pointer for the opening score of...
“All the ‘fake news’ and false quotes are going to ruin the internet,” Cy the Cynic complained to me in the club lounge. “Who is saying that?” I asked. “According to Wikipedia,” Cy shrugged, “Thomas Edison said it.” You can’t believe everything you read about certain bridge “rules.” In today’s deal, West led a spade against 3NT, and declarer won and led a club from dummy. East followed with the nine, thereby allowing South to make his game. When South’s queen won, he led another club and played low from dummy, bringing down the ace. He won the spade return and had 11 tricks: five clubs and two of everything else. SUSPICION Defenders often play “second hand low,” but any so-called rule must be viewed with suspicion. East won’t beat 3NT if South’s clubs are Q-x-x, so East should assume they are Q-x. Then East prevails by putting up the ace on the first club and returning a spade. The clubs are blocked, and dummy’s only entry is removed. South wins only seven tricks. DAILY QUESTION You hold: S 9...
De La Salle’s Joey Donnelly was the runaway pick for Bay Area News Group boys athlete of the week. One week after teammate Blake Burke narrowly took the honors, the Cal-bound Donnelly won with 63.63% of the vote. Sacred Heart Prep basketball standout Harrison Carrington was this week’s runner-up. Donnelly, a senior, sent a fastball soaring over the right-field fence for a two-run, game-ending home run in the bottom of the 10th inning as De La Salle beat Foothill 7-5 in East Bay Athletic League play. The shot, Donnelly’s third home run of the season, extended De La Salle’s winning streak to seven games. The Spartans have won four more games since then. Congratulations to Donnelly, Carrington and the others who were in the running. Candidates for next week’s voting will be released Monday, May 17. If you would like to nominate an athlete, email [email protected] by Sunday, May 16. Winners are announced each Friday on the Mercury News & East Bay Times websites.
To end the week, try to find a winning defense against today’s four hearts. Cover the East and South cards and defend as West after East preempted over North’s one club. South showed a good hand with long hearts. You lead the king of diamonds: deuce, jack, five. What next? When I watched the deal, West went wrong: He led a second diamond. East won but had no winning return. He tried a third diamond, but South ruffed with the six. West discarded a club. When South led a low trump next, West played low, and dummy’s ten won. South led a spade to his hand and tabled the king of trumps, and West’s ace won the defenders’ last trick. Making four. PROMISING West’s trump holding was promising, and the defense could prevail with a trump promotion. But at the second trick, West must cash his ace of trumps. He then leads a second diamond, and when East wins and leads a third diamond, West scores his nine of trumps whether South ruffs low or high. Did you beat the...
