If you were to listen to Fox News, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva and felon O.J. Simpson, you would think West Hollywood is under assault. They say crime is out of control, residents are cowering in their homes, and the blasé West Hollywood City Council just made the place more dangerous by voting to defund the Sheriff’s Department. If you listen to activists on the left, the City Council is keeping far too many armed deputies on the streets, and those who think differently are being swayed by right-wing “copaganda.” Reality, of course, is more nuanced. The City Council voted in late June to reduce the number of deputies in the West Hollywood sheriff’s station gradually and to increase the number of unarmed security guards — dubbed “ambassadors” — patrolling the streets. Their action has placed the city on the front lines of the culture wars. California Starbucks says these L.A. stores are too unsafe to operate. (CNN)A West Virginia woman has awoken from a two-year coma and identified her brother as her attacker, according to police.Wanda Palmer, 51, accused her brother of attacking her at her residence near Cottageville, West Virginia, in June 2020. Police said that Palmer was "attacked, hacked, and left for dead," according to a statement posted on Jackson County Sheriff's Department's Facebook.Police say they found Palmer in an "upright position" on her couch with severe injuries caused by what appeared to be a hatchet or axe. Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger told CNN that when police arrived, they thought she was dead but realized soon after she was still alive and breathing shallowly.Police never recovered the weapon, Mellinger said. One witness reported seeing Palmer's brother, Daniel, on her porch around midnight the night before she was discovered, Mellinger said. There were no phone records, surveillance footage, or eyewitnesses outside of Palmer's home, the sheriff said.Read MorePolice investigated several people but could never file charges. WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- Re-imagining public safety is underway in West Hollywood after the city council voted 3 to 2 in favor of eliminating four Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies, potentially over the next nine months. One deputy on average costs the city $330,000 a year."Prioritizing people's safety doesn't just mean people with guns and badges on the streets," said West Hollywood City Councilwoman Lindsey Horvath.Since 2013, West Hollywood has been supplementing its public safety efforts through its Block by Block program, which uses unarmed security ambassadors who patrol the city by foot and on bikes. It costs roughly $70,000 a person. The city council set a goal of adding 30 Block by Block members, using most of the money they'll save from eliminating the four sheriff's deputies."You never know until you try, but clearly the current situation is not working," said West Hollywood resident Anna Lee."Police and law enforcement agencies are asked to do so many functions in society that they aren't trained to do, and that real public safety means further investments in affordable housing, permanent supportive...
The mayor of West Hollywood condemned the city council's vote to defund their sheriff's department despite sporting one of the highest crime rates in the nation.  The proposal, passed by a narrow three to two vote, will see the current force of around 60 sheriff's deputies reduced by four, while also hiring 30 unarmed 'security ambassadors' under a scheme called Block By Block. Lauren Meister, the Democratic mayor who voted against the plan along with one other member of the council, called it illogical, noting that the Los Angeles enclave is afflicted by a rising tide of crime and violence. 'Most of the residents and businesses I have heard from are opposed to cutting the Sheriff's budget,' Meister told Fox News.  'They are outraged that people and organizations from outside our city are dictating to council how to run our city,' she added, appearing to reference the controversial Defund the Police movement occurring nationwide. 'The narrative that we can have 'either Sheriff's or social services,' or 'either Sheriff's or unarmed security teams' is false.'  Lauren Meister, the mayor of West Hollywood,...
West Hollywood's city council voted on Monday to defund their sheriffs - despite crime earlier this spring rocketing 137 percent, year on year. The five-member council was split on the proposal, which will see the current force of around 60 sheriffs' deputies reduced by four. The funds saved by reducing the headcount will be used to pay for unarmed 'security ambassadors', under a scheme called Block By Block. Yet despite slashing the policing budget, the council agreed to stump up funds for a Russian arts festival - increasing their contribution by $14,000 to $50,000. Lauren Meister, mayor of West Hollywood and a member of the council, voted against the plan. She said that it was illogical, noting that the Los Angeles enclave is afflicted by violence. NEW YORK (AP) — The cryptocurrency market gets likened to the Wild West by critics, and now a key player is asking for sheriffs to come to town. Binance, the world’s largest exchange for trading Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, says it’s time for global regulators to establish rules for crypto markets. It released a list of “10 fundamental rights for crypto users” this week that it wants to guide discussions with regulators, policymakers and other exchanges. The company acknowledges that crypto platforms have an obligation to protect users and to implement processes to prevent financial crimes, along with the responsibility to work with regulators and policymakers to set standards to keep users safe. The call for regulation might seem strange for an industry whose popularity exploded in some part precisely because it sought to operate outside the heavy hand of governments and other authorities. But Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, who goes by “CZ,” says more regulation for the industry is inevitable, and this allows his company to play a role in the discussions. It may also help...
