For a winning streak such as this to be sustained, plays such as these must be made. With the Chicago Cubs threatening with a runner on third and one out in a one-run game Tuesday, Orioles right-hander Jordan Lyles produced a high-wire act to escape unscathed. When a liner leaped off Nico Hoerner’s bat in the sixth inning, third baseman Ramón Urías snared it before it touched the dirt, then trotted to third to double off Seiya Suzuki, who broke toward the plate on contact. That effort — the fortunate placement of Urías and a ball hit just right — played a major role in another Orioles win. With the 4-2 victory at Wrigley Field, Baltimore has won nine straight games for the first time since 13 consecutive victories in September 1999. And with that victory, the Orioles (44-44) have reached .500 with more than 50 games played in a season for the first time since 2017. “We’ve been playing really good baseball,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “It’s great to hear the excitement in our clubhouse right now, and I...

BRIGHTON, England (AP) — Winning the Premier League title is looking more unlikely for Chelsea each passing week. After a 1-1 draw at Brighton on Tuesday, the European champions soon might have to start looking over their shoulder in the race for Champions League qualification. Chelsea’s winless run in the league stretched to four games after Brighton defender Adam Webster’s powerful header from a corner in the 60th minute canceled out the opening goal by Hakim Ziyech in the 29th. Brighton also came from behind to draw 1-1 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge three weeks ago. Chelsea stayed in third place and is 12 points behind leader Manchester City having played one game more. Given the form of City, which has won its last 12 games — most recently against Chelsea on Saturday, the champions will take some stopping in the quest to defend their title. The teams behind Chelsea might be getting renewed hope. Such as fifth-place Arsenal, which is nine points behind its London rival with three games in hand. Or another London club in Tottenham, which is...
CHELSEA became just the second team ever to reach 600 Premier League wins when they beat Aston Villa 3-0 on Saturday. They are now two wins ahead of Arsenal but still miles behind Manchester United who sit on 690. 2Chelsea beat Arsenal to 600 Premier League wins The Blues have been in the top flight since its inception in 1992-93. United, Tottenham, Everton, the Gunners and Liverpool are the others who have been in for the same amount of time and have all played 1,118 games in total. Only Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and United have won more than half of their Prem matches. Current Premier League champions Manchester City rank just seventh in the list with 447 wins from 928 games. But they have played the least Prem matches of all the top 10 teams having spent several seasons in the lower leagues in the last 29 years. Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa complete the top ten with 369, 342 and 321 wins respectively. Most read in FootballLive BlogUNITED NEWS Tielemans open to transfer, Ronaldo nets in defeat...
Republican members of Congress are celebrating their successful rescue efforts of an American mother and her young children stranded in Afghanistan after President Joe Biden's chaotic military evacuation abandoned up to 200 American citizens and thousands of Afghan special immigrant visa applicants. US officials confirmed it was the first successful government-led land evacuation since the withdrawal effort began. Oklahoma conservative Rep. Markwayne Mullin posted a photo on Twitter Monday morning of an American citizen named Mariam surrounded by her three small children. Mullin said he had been contacted by a friend 'a little over three weeks ago' asking if he could do anything to help the young mother and her three children, who also hold US passports.  'Mariam had gone to visit her parents for the first time with the kids and became trapped in Kabul when the Taliban overran the city. We left two weeks ago today to get her, the children, and others out,' the lawmaker wrote. The father of six said his team worked 'around the clock' and encountered numerous setbacks but perservered. Mariam and her...
UP to 1,000 children could be left behind during the urgent evacuations from Afghanistan - but two twin sisters have managed to make it safely to Britain. Asna and Sana Hashimi, both five, are now preparing for a new life in England after making it out of Afghanistan. 5Asna and Sana Hashimi, both five, are now preparing for a new life in EnglandCredit: Sky News 5Heartbreaking TV news footage showed two crying children after they were separated from their parentsCredit: ITV News They managed to escape the country just after the Taliban took over control following the fall of Kabul earlier this month. Their dad Nooragha Hashimi - who worked as a translator with the Royal Engineers - said he would've been killed if he hadn't been on the RAF evacuation flight. He told Sky News: "Everyone knows about me – 'He's an interpreter' – so that's why this was dangerous for me. "Everybody was scared about what [the Taliban are] going to do, and the first time they're saying 'we're gonna do nothing [to] anybody', but nobody knows if...
Posing for the camera in their party dresses, five-year-old twins Asna and Sana yesterday epitomised the successes of British rescue missions from Kabul as they prepared to begin a new life in England. The young sisters may not yet understand just how fortunate they are to escape Afghanistan amid fears that up to 1,000 face being left behind. But for their translator father, the RAF evacuation flight to Britain from Kabul was a lifeline, as he admitted the Taliban would have killed him because of his vital support for the Army. The ecstasy of the family – interpreter Nooragha Hashimi, his wife, the twins and their brother – was in stark contrast to the desperate scenes unfolding outside a temporary British processing unit at Kabul's airport, illustrating the lottery faced by those trying to reach the UK. As Haiti continues to reel from the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that killed more than 2,000 people, the biggest challenge is getting food and medical care to survivors — but residents say it's not happening fast enough.  Since Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard has medevaced over 200 people — in the remote village of Annette, they transported 20 critically injured people to the capital, Port au Prince.   One woman outside Les Cayes, which is very close to the epicenter of the earthquake, says there's much more work to be done.  "People are sleeping in the streets," she said. "We feel left behind."  The need is immense. Some are waiting outside airports for helicopters to arrive with food supplies. In Port au Prince, hospitals are at capacity — and doctors are struggling to treat the more than 12,000 victims.  People load humanitarian aid on United Nations helicopter for it to be flown where access by land isn't possible at Antoine Simon airport after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on August 19, 2021 in Les Cayes, Haiti.  Richard Pierrin / Getty...
THERE is just one more game to win before England can finally confirm 'It's Coming Home'. Gareth Southgate's Three Lions will play Italy in the Euro 2020 final after beating Denmark 2-1 after extra-time in the semis. 5England by number since their last major tournament final back in 1966 5Can England achieve all their dreams and beat Italy in the Euro 2020 finalCredit: Getty The nation is already euphoric - and that's before the trophy has even been secured. England have NEVER won the Euros - and the last time they even reached a major tournament final was in 1966 when they won the World Cup (you may have seen it mentioned). That means it has been 55 years of hurt for the long-suffering fans. And there are plenty of other fascinating numbers to work with since that joyous 4-2 victory against West Germany, as the BBC have shared. England have played 302 competitive matches, triumphing 180 times. But winning more than losing still hasn't bagged them major tournament silverware. The Three Lions have scored an impressive 604 goals, only...

Fernando Alonso It has always shown a competitiveness beyond any doubt. He admits it himself: if he can get from one end of the room to another first, he will. If you can train more, race in more disciplines than anyone else, or get more out of your teammates than anyone else, you will. On his return to the Formula 1 two and a half years later it has not taken more than two days to show that it is still a competitive animal like few others. He dropped it on the radio in conversation with his engineer, Karel Loos. As soon as he crossed the finish line after making his good lap that left him ninth, the Spaniard admitted that possibly that is the maximum they could reach. The Alpine A521 It is one step behind its rivals, and although it is a good car, it does not reach the benefits of the McLaren or the Ferraris. That does not matter much to Alonso, because he knows that where the car does not arrive, he tries to arrive....

With Tom Brady in Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers are hoping for a rise to the top behind the greatest quarterback to ever live.Best-case scenarioA push into the deeper part of the playoffs. All of the pieces have been assembled to at least end the drought that has been plaguing Tampa Bay for over a decade, but expectations should be higher. With Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski in the fold, along with a strong draft class, there’s reason to believe Tampa Bay could reach its first Super Bowl since 2002. Worst-case scenarioMissing the playoffs. No record, no matter how positive it may look, would excuse a team with this talent if it fails to at least earn a playoff berth. If Tampa Bay doesn’t reach the expanded postseason, it would mean the move to acquire Brady fell flat, and perhaps there’s a deeper problem.Biggest offseason moveThe signing of Brady is easily the biggest move the Bucs have made in the history of the franchise. Brady brings experience and consistency to a team that desperately needed it, and at 43 years old,...
BEAVER COUNTY, Pa. (KDKA) — One year ago Wednesday, a deadly stabbing stunned a local neighborhood. New Castle police say Keith Burley stabbed 8-year-old Markie Mason more than 100 times. (Photo Credit: Family of Mark Mason) On the anniversary of the little boy’s death, a new law intends to honor his memory. “My son’s a victim, yes, but my son’s a hero,” said the boy’s father Mark Mason. “And I want my son remembered as a hero, not a victim.” Burley left the state after allegedly killing Markie and was finally handcuffed more than nine hours after the little boy’s death.
