Q: I am really glad I have an electric car, a 2013 Nissan Leaf, and enough solar panels to charge it exclusively at home. My range is only 70 miles, so I keep my speed to no more than 60 mph to extend the range. It will be good if gas cars also slow down on the freeway. I agree that it is necessary as an EV driver to contribute to road maintenance, and prefer a mileage-based method. Once a year, I sell my excess solar power back to PG&E for a measly 3 cents/kwh. They sell it to other customers for at least 7 times that price. This and time-of-use-rates are designed to discourage residential solar power generation. Until this changes, the electrical supply is not going to be able to handle more EVs, nor all-electric homes giving up natural gas. Sandra Adams A: Electric vehicle owners now pay a fee when they register their cars to help counteract the loss of gas tax funds from their use of that vehicle. Q: With two fatal Amtrak accidents recently, in Brentwood and...

President Biden's poll numbers dipped to 39 percent, the lowest of his presidency by The Associated Press polling, as hopelessness abounds within his own party ahead of November's midterm elections.  Thirty-nine percent of U.S. adults gave their approval to the president's job in office, according to the AP-NORC Center for Public Research poll, but even more noteworthy is that only 33 percent of Democrats say the country is headed in the right direction, down 16 point from 49 percent in April. A customer shops at at a grocery store on February 10, 2022 in Miami, Florida. But how does it really work? And will it work this time, when bloated prices seem at least partially beyond the reach of conventional monetary policy? It is this dilemma that has Wall Street confused and markets volatile. In normal times, the Federal Reserve is seen as the cavalry coming into quell soaring prices. But this time, the Fed is going to need some help. "Can the Fed bring down inflation on their own? I think the answer is 'no,'" said Jim Baird, chief investment officer at Plante Moran Financial Advisors. "They certainly can help rein in the demand side by higher interest rates. BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Bryan Reynolds knows he earned a hefty raise after making the All-Star team and becoming a finalist for both the Gold Glove and the Silver Slugger awards, all while playing for $601,000 last season, just above the major league minimum. How much of a raise, however, remains uncertain. Reynolds submitted a proposal for $4.9 million for 2022. The Pirates countered with an offer of $4.25 million. The two sides failed to split the $650,000 difference, leading to a potentially thorny fight in arbitration for the best player on a rebuilding team still searching for an identity. The Pirates are a “file and trial” team, opting to stop negotiations and go to an arbitration hearing. Reynolds is coming off his best season, batting .302/.390/.522 with 35 doubles, eight triples, 24 home runs and 90 RBIs in 159 games last season. The 27-year-old Reynolds is aware that arbitration hearings can get “messy” as teams attempt to lower a player’s value, so he expects the Pirates to hold the 2020 season against him. The...

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases head and chief White House medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation” “it is just too soon to tell” if Christmas gatherings will be advised in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Anchor Margaret Brennan said, “There are two new studies out that show COVID has gotten better at transmitting through aerosols, just through the air. What does that mean? We’re going into cold weather, the holidays. Do people need to start looking around and say it is too risky to gather with family members if there are unvaccinated children?” Fauci said, “I believe the way the CDC has recommended is when you’re in a situation where you have a dynamics of virus in the community, where there is clearly a lot of spread, even if you are vaccinated, and you are in an indoor setting, a congregate setting, it makes sense to wear a mask and to avoid high-risk settings. We should be looking at ventilation in indoor places. It is clearly spread by aerosol, so you want...
A LITTLE bit of love can go a long way, so the saying goes — and in Chelsea’s case who knows how far that could take them. He’s learned more about the game, his hold-up play has improved, and he probably understands it more than before, after doing it on the world stage for Belgium. But above all, he’s returned to Stamford Bridge feeling very important. And while that might not sound a massive thing, it can sometimes be...
You circulate on the street of a town or on an interurban road and you see that a few meters in front of a car there is a bump. You check that there are no vehicles around, you circumvent it and continue with your journey. No matter how many times you have carried out this movement or have witnessed it … repetition will not make it legal. Can you be fined for avoiding a bump? The answer is found in the Law on Traffic, Circulation of Motor Vehicles and Road Safety. The Ministry of Public Works is in charge of distributing across our geography the speed reducers and cross belts. This is their technical name: most of the drivers refer to them as bumps, speed bumps and even popularly as ‘Civil Guard lying down’. Be that as it may, its installation of certain sections and singular points responds to two reasons: a necessary reduction in speed or special attention to driving. Reduce speed This is the theory, but the practice is sometimes different. Many drivers do not slow down...

The Big 12 has explained a loophole that will allow rival teams to openly troll the Texas football program with the popular “Horns Down” taunt without getting penalized for it. One way Big 12 rival teams have messed with the Texas football program in the past is to hit them with the popular “Horns Down” taunt. With Texas still not being back, it has become common for Big 12 foes to flash the “Horns Down” sign to troll the Longhorns during their annual meetings. While opposing teams will normally get assessed a penalty for doing the taunt, the Big 12 has given the other nine teams a possible loophole to still do it: If you do “Horns Down” to your own fans, you may not get penalized. If you can keep messing with Texas while celebrating with your own fans, then why not do it? Big 12 coordinator of officials Greg Burks said that if an opposing player does a Horns Down to a Texas player, that will probably be a penalty. But doing a Horns Down toward your own fans "probably...
NOW look. We spoke about this before the tournament.  Or at least I did, with Teddy Sheringham, and relayed it to you. Teddy, in the interview I did for The Sun, was at pains to point out that back among the triumphs of Euro ’96 there were plenty of moments when things didn’t go to plan.  News Group Newspapers Ltd 1 Teddy Sheringham and Gazza pictured during Euro ’96 The first game was a draw, and England were none too clever against Scotland in the first half. And if McAllister had scored that penalty to equalise, who knows what might have happened. But England kept their heads, and we all just about kept ours, and magical things came to pass.  As was agreed with Teddy, success is born out of grinding through the bad bits as much as celebrating magical moments. It’s getting through dodgy times that allows the brilliance to show itself.  This can — and will — still happen if we don’t despair and don’t, for heaven’s sake, boo them off the pitch.   Let’s go...

Can the American taxpayer foot the bill to protect innocent children in Gaza, where there’s two million people in one of the most densely populated parts of the world so that they don’t have death rain down upon them?” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) responded, “Not so long as Hamas is running Gaza. Hamas is an organization that seeks the eradication of Israel and organizes the armed rebellion against it. The Giants did not have to do a thing on Wednesday to gain $2.5 million in salary cap space for the 2021 season. Problem is, all the other teams in the league also gained the same cap space. The NFL finally set the cap number for the season, and it is $182.5 million. The floor for this year’s cap had been set at $180 million before all teams were informed they would have a bit more money to work with. This is down from $198.2 million in 2020, the result of an entire season played amid a global pandemic, COVID-19 restrictions and empty stadiums in most cities. Despite the slight increase, the Giants have plenty of work to do to get to the $182.5 million threshold by March 17, which is the start of the new league year. At present,...
DIY SOS viewers broke down in tears as the show's army of volunteers built a whole new wing on a couple's house so their critically-ill daughters could have life-saving dialysis from home. Appearing on the latest episode of the BBC Show, Lucy and Jan Collins, from Devon, explained how they found out they were expecting triplets weeks after moving into their first house in 2012. 20Lucy broke down in tears as she spoke about her daughters' health strugglesCredit: BBC However, Lucy's pregnancy was complicated from the start as the couple later found out that just two of the babies were identical. At 17 weeks, the identical babies were diagnosed with twin-to-twin syndrome which causes abnormal blood flow between them. "The identical girls shared the same placenta," Lucy explained. "Daisy had no visible fluid and she was like shrink-wrapped inside and Amber had so much fluid that her heart was the size of her chest." Jan recalled: "The whole pregnancy then became about, is there three heartbeats?" 20Daisy and Amber both have nephrotic syndrome which causes the kidneys to leak proteins...
Infamous race-faker Rachel Dolezal, the white woman who was outed for pretending to be black in 2015, still insists she’s African American and complained in a recent interview she’s been unable to secure a new job for six years. Dolezal, 43, who now goes by the Nigerian name Nkechi Amare Diallo, sat down for a talk on the "Tamron Hall" show to whine about how she wishes people could see her for who she is rather than "what" she is. "I started with applying for all of the things I was qualified for and after interviews and getting turned down, I even applied to jobs that didn’t even require degrees, being a maid at a hotel, working at a casino," Dolezal told the former "Today" host in the interview, which aired on YouTube Monday. "I wasn’t able to get any of those jobs either," she lamented. Bill de Blasio on Wednesday clashed with Andrew Cuomo over the slow pace of vaccinations across New York state.  The New York City mayor announced a plan earlier in the day to offer coronavirus vaccines to most NYPD police officers. An hour later the governor said many cops are not yet eligible for the shot.  'Police who are not health care workers are not yet eligible,' Cuomo said. 'We need to get the health care population done first because they are the front line, as I mentioned before.' Under state guidelines set by Cuomo, healthcare workers and nursing home residents and staff were the first groups eligible to receive shots when the vaccination campaign started three weeks ago. De Blasio appeared to take a swipe at Cuomo earlier Wednesday, telling reporters the priority criteria needs to be urgently expanded so those aged over 75 and all essential workers can be vaccinated.  Just 130,000 NYC residents have received vaccines across since the first vaccine was first approved for use. The mayor says the city hoped to offer the vaccines to 25,000 officers...
Can the New York Giants trust Colt McCoy to get the job done against Cleveland? By: Alexander Wilson December 19, 2020 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Giants are headed into a contest against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday night, and they will be without starting cornerback James Bradberry. The expectation is that Daniel Jones will also be limited if not inactive, which would indicate a Colt McCoy start for the second time this season. Last week, Jones struggled to progress through his reads, and poor playcalling by Jason Garrett and the lack of separation by the wide receivers undoubtedly played a significant part in his struggles. However, Jones relies on his legs to make up for his deficiencies in the passing game and lack of awareness in the pocket. Without his mobility, DJ struggled to get things going on offense against the Arizona Cardinals, who surprisingly stacked the box with linebackers and played man coverage for a majority of the game. This loss came on the back of an improbable victory over the Seattle...

Two members of President-elect Joe Biden's COVID-19 advisory board said they are opposed to a blanket lockdown for the entire country, favoring local measures to target hot spots. During an interview with Fox News Sunday, former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, co-chair of the advisory board, told Chris Wallace that "the way we think about lockdowns is different now" and the new administration is "not thinking of a national lockdown." "[A lockdown is] a measure of last resort," Murthy said. "In the spring when we didn’t know a lot about Covid, we responded in a sense with an on/off switch. We just shut things down because, you know, we didn’t know exactly how this was spreading and where it was spreading. ... The better way to think about these safety restrictions is more the dial that we turn up and down depending on severity, and that’s really the key here, is applying these restrictions judiciously and precisely." Murthy said sweeping lockdowns suffer from diminishing returns since they exacerbate the "pandemic fatigue" that led many to ignore...

Odell Beckham Jr. apparently doesn’t believe COVID-19 can cover him or bring him down. The former Giants star was sent home with an illness last Thursday, but he played in the Cleveland Browns’ 38-7 loss Sunday to Pittsburgh after his coronavirus test came back negative. OBJ said Wednesday that he never was concerned that he’d test positive or contract the virus. “No, not in an arrogant way, I just don’t think COVID can get to me. I don’t it’s gonna enter this body,” Beckham said Wednesday. “I don’t want no parts of it; it don’t want no parts of me. I think it’s a mutual respect. “So I wasn’t really worried about the test, it was just more in my mind for me and my maturity level I felt like it was the right thing to do to mention I may not have been feeling well. I just wouldn’t want it to spread throughout the whole building, if there was a case that I would have possibly had it. I was just trying to be an adult and be precautious...

While Denver’s ballot looks dauntingly long, many of the items are simply housekeeping measures — but we all know how dirty houses can get. There was plenty of down-and-dirty fighting over a few of the proposals that Denver City Council referred to the ballot. This year, Denver voters can decide if they want to ante up for a cleaner environment, as well as tax themselves to provide more help for the homeless. They can give councilmembers more power in this strong-mayor town, and allow them to exercise some of that power virtually. And finally, they’ve got the chance to show the city’s three-decade-old pit bull ban the door. Here are the items you’ll find on Denver’s ballot, as well as who’s for them...and who’ll admit to being against:Related Stories Lauren Boebert on America's Most Unusual Race for Congress Politics and Restaurants Make Strange Breadfellows Denver Voters Will Vote on Sales Tax Increase for Homeless Services Measure 2A: Climate Funding Denver City Council referred this initiative to the ballot as an alternative to the climate tax-increase proposal pushed by...
Britney Spears wants to show fans what she “really looks like” on a daily basis. The pop star posted a photo of herself on Monday wearing a plaid shirt, jeans, sandals and glasses, and claimed that the much more dressed-down version of herself is her true “reality.” Spears, 38, typically wears a peasant top and shorts, workout clothes or tight dresses on her Instagram. “I can get insecure when photos are taken of me that I’m not prepared for ….. so I have always put so much effort into my appearance … but you know sometimes it’s nice to not try so hard and pull down your walls every now and then !!!! It takes a lot of strength to do that !!!” she wrote. The “Toxic” singer then went on a tangent about she played basketball growing up instead of cheerleading, and revealed that the pictures in the slideshow were taken as she was trying to do some handiwork in her home. “I was trying to fix a light ???? but realized I was too short,” she said. Her...
