CONCORD – For the storied De La Salle football program, the fall 2021 season was historic as much as it was painful. The Concord school’s 30-year unbeaten streak against regional opponents ended in a shocking September loss at St. Francis. A couple of months later, the team’s run of 13 consecutive appearances in a state championship game came to a halt after a stunning loss at home to Folsom. The offseason wasn’t easy, either. For the first time since the pandemic changed everyone’s lives in March 2020, De La Salle got back to its roots. The conditioning grind began in earnest in January and continued through the spring, summer and now fall camp, which began Monday across the North Coast Section. “The whole thing of the De La Salle offseason is pretty rough,” said four-star tight end Cooper Flanagan, a Notre Dame commit. “But having the team and kids around you, suffer with you, I think the whole point is to create a bond that you can’t really get without going through as much pain and suffering as we did...

This bill restores faith in humanity and faith that human life has value," McNamara said. After the bill passed in the House, the Indiana Democratic Party tweeted that their GOP counterparts seeking to ban abortion are "essentially declaring that their values are more righteous than those of their fellow citizens."Read MoreIndiana presently allows abortions up to 20 weeks after fertilization (or 22 weeks after the mother's last menstrual period).
Jon Stewart demonstrated in front of the Capitol on Monday to urge senators to pass legislation providing more funding for veterans who had been exposed to toxic burn pits after President Joe Biden called him to thank him for his advocacy. Stewart issued another explective-filled rant at the lawmakers, who, last week, he referred to as 'motherf***ers.'  'I get it. I am a liberal piece of s***,' Stewart shouted outside the front stairs of the Capitol building. 'I know that I am I'm Hunter Biden's cocaine dealer.' 'But the VFW and the American Legion and the IAVA isn't and DAV isn't and the Wounded Warriors project isn't. So why are they standing here? You can attack me all you want. And you can troll me online,' he added. 'But here's the beautiful thing. I don't give a s***. I'm not scared of you. And I don't care. These are the people that I owe a debt of gratitude to and we all say gratitude to and it's about time we start paying it off,' he said. He called on the...
LOS ANGELES — The head of a California tax preparation business has admitted his role in fraud schemes totaling $25 million that included exaggerated tax returns for professional athletes and exploiting federal pandemic relief programs, federal prosecutors said Wednesday. Seir Robinson Havana, 46, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and money laundering charges, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement. As CEO of Mana Tax Services, Mana represented himself to pro athletes as an expert in the tax code who could get them big refunds. He admitted as part of his plea agreement to submitting tax returns on behalf of nine different athletes that grossly inflated the returns to which they were entitled. The athletes were not named. SO many YouTubers have been purchasing return pallets and showing off what they’ve received. And while this has gone quite well for many, this wasn’t the case for Grace Booth, who bought a £600 John Lewis returns pallet, but was sorely disappointed with what she received. 5Grace Booth says she ordered a returns pallet but was rather disappointed with what arrivedCredit: Grackle 5Many of the items were faulty and/or missing partsCredit: Grackle The first problem with the items becomes clear when she reads just why one microwave was returned to the store. “This one has a little note on it” she says, “which says that it overheats, fires and burns, so I feel like I don’t want to test that.” She also adds that the product image on the pallet she ordered was a SAGE coffee machine, which she assumed would be in the order.  However, this was actually missing when it arrived. Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., May 9, 2022. Brendan Mcdermid | Reuters American millionaires are raising cash in response to lingering inflation fears, according to CNBC's Millionaire Survey. Millionaires surveyed by CNBC ranked inflation as the top risk to both the economy and their personal wealth. It's the first time since the survey began in 2014 that inflation has edged out all other risks in the ranking. Forty-two percent of millionaires said inflation will last "at least a year or two," and another 19% said it would last more than two years, according to the results. The survey includes investors with at least $1 million in investible assets. It was conducted in May and surveyed approximately 750 respondents who reported that they are the financial decision-makers or share jointly in financial decision-making within their households. Since the survey was conducted, a readout of consumer prices found inflation accelerated further last month and the S&P 500 slipped into a bear market, more than 20% off its recent highs. A young boy that was born with two congenital hear defects and suffered a stroke that caused him to lose feeling in half of his body is finally recovering, and starting to live a normal life. Max Weigel, who was four at the time, of Rockford, Michigan, around 130 miles west of Detroit, was born with atrial septal defect (ASD), a hole in the upper chamber of his heart, and left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy, a condition that occurs when the left ventricle of the heart fails. After getting a surgery to close the hole in his heart, Weigel suffered a stroke, and because of his conditions, treatment options to save him - and prevent him from permanently losing feeling in one of his body - were limited. Doctors were able to perform life-saving treatment on the young boy, though, and now three years later he is starting to return to normal life and catch up to his peers physically. Headlining the inaugural Mill Valley Music Festival won’t be just another stop on Ben Harper’s international tour. Mill Valley holds warm memories and a special significance for the three-time Grammy winner. When he steps on stage on May 7, he’ll be returning to the city that helped launch his career nearly 30 years ago. Back then, Harper was an unknown young singer-songwriter when the late Jeanie Patterson, Sweetwater’s legendary grande dame, believed in him enough to have him open for blues great John Lee Hooker, handing him his first big break. “I was a nobody,” says Harper, speaking from his home in Southern California. “My first record (1994’s “Welcome to the Cruel World”) wasn’t even out yet and she put me on that stage when I had no business being on it. That was one of the early indicators that I might be able to get somewhere in music. One of the early high points and honors of my career was Mill Valley and Jeanie Patterson and Sweetwater.” Harper has gone on to release 15 studio albums, including five gold...

A Pennsylvania air force pilot will return to duty on Wednesday, March 30, after approximately five months of rehabilitation and recovery following a plane crash that killed his daughter, officials said. Col. Deane Thomey, who was seriously injured in the single-engine plane crash on Oct 22, 2021, in Colleton County, South Carolina, was treated for several weeks in the intensive care unit at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, according to a statement from the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. Oh, the outrage. Decades after Monty Python’s Norwegian Blue parrot was declared to be ‘bereft of life’ and ‘gone to meet its maker’, the show is back on television. For the first time in 34 years, Britain’s most surreal comedy export is screening on a free-to-view channel. The classic nostalgia station That’s TV will be showing all four Python series — in pairs of episodes for an hour a day — from 9pm this evening. And in a controversial move, the channel has vowed not to cut a word. ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus always provoked howls of protest,’ says That’s TV chief executive Daniel Cass. ‘It was meant to be outrageous. We wouldn’t be true to its spirit if we started censoring it.’ For the first time in 34 years, Britain’s most surreal comedy export is screening on a free-to-view channel But if Python was a raspberry in the face of decency when it launched in 1969, how will a generation of younger viewers who have never heard of chocolate-covered crunchy frogs or the fish-slapping dance cope? It isn’t just...
The voice of Marisa Monte is supple and sage enough to explore the multitude of musical styles from her native Brazil, to channel our hopes and frustrations as we attempt to emerge from the cloistered dolor of the COVID era and to provide succor through the sheer beauty of song.  Monte will appear at the State Theatre on Saturday night, part of her current tour with an eight-piece band in support of “Portas,” her first solo album in ten years. Although many of the record’s 16 compositions were penned before the pandemic, some seem tailor-made to parry with the current era’s enforced uncertainty, while others brim with escapist romanticism and the gamut of emotion that accompany affairs of the heart. What they share is the sensibility of a mature singer-songwriter, an independent woman capable of conveying nuance and sophistication in the sprightly context of pop music. DENVER — Steph Curry was riding the bus to Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles when a text message from coach Steve Kerr popped up. “Hey, I think we should go back to your old rotation,” Kerr texted last weekend. “Yes, sir,” Curry texted back. Curry knew the switch back would come eventually. With Klay Thompson back in the mix and Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala nearing returns, getting the old gang back together means the Warriors can return to a familiar cadence. “It was just a matter of when. Hopefully it will give us a good scope of games for everyone to be comfortable with it,” Curry said recently. “It helps me get into the rhythm and get into the tune of the game and helps the second unit know that they will have a certain stretch of time, know certain calls and sets and hopefully get some chemistry with that group. So we’ll see.” Since that loss against the Lakers on Saturday, Curry has been playing a variation of the rotation pattern he used primarily through the team’s championship...

Dr. Wendy Burgers, immunologist at the University of Cape Town, said that the memory response can "last for ages." "Potentially the T-cell response is extremely long lived," Burgers added. What else? On Monday, NPR global health correspondent Michaeleen Doucleff reported that the current data states that the general population does not need a fourth dose. "Last week, a study came out of Israel looking specifically at what a fourth dose does," Doucleff said. "How much does it help? It's a preliminary study, and it's pretty small. It included only about 700 people. But it found that quite clearly that a fourth shot of either Pfizer or Moderna doesn't add much protection against infection beyond the third dose. Specifically, it increased protection by only about 10% to 30%, and that protection will likely wane over time." Doucleff added that more is not necessarily better when it comes to booster shots. "[T]his vaccine really isn't designed to stop Omicron, stop Omicron infections," she explained. "It's designed to stop the original variants of the virus that...

By Josh Boak | The Associated Press The Biden administration wants families with children to know that there is roughly $193 billion waiting for them — all they need to do is file their taxes to claim it. That estimated total is what remains of the expanded child tax credit, and the administration is concerned that some of those most in need of the assistance may be the least likely to get what is due to them. President Joe Biden increased the payments and expanded who was eligible as part of his coronavirus relief package. While most families already received half of the credit as monthly payments last year, they’ll lose out on the remaining balance unless they file their taxes. Vice President Kamala Harris, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and White House senior adviser Gene Sperling held a virtual event Tuesday to encourage people to send their tax forms to the IRS, including those whose incomes are so low that they might not have traditionally filed. Harris said that families should go to childtaxcredit.gov to check their eligibility. The tax...
MONEY might still be available for Americans who were entitled to stimulus checks in 2021, but did not receive the correct amount. Anyone who believes they are owed more than they received will be able to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit when filing their 2021 tax returns. 2Some people may still be eligible for stimulus moneyCredit: Getty Families who had a baby in 2021 and those who added a new dependent to their tax return are among those who can receive the extra stimulus cash. Individuals who earned more than $80,000 in 2020 but whose income was less in 2021 are also eligible to pick up the $1,400 payment if they haven't already received it. This maximum income threshold is at $160,000 for couples. The third federal stimulus check, which the government began paying out in March of last year, was issued mainly based on 2019 and 2020 tax returns. However, many Americans earned less last year, making them eligible for the $1,400. Unless they updated their information with the IRS, they would not have received the check as...

Anchiy | E+ | Getty Images For investors whose retirement is decades away, the stock market's pullback should be of little concern — there's plenty of time for your portfolio to recover before you need the money. The IRS is warning taxpayers that they expect possibly slower service than usual and some experts are blaming the inability to pass President Joe Biden's Build Back Better social spending agenda.  Tax season begins on January 24 and runs to April 18, the US Treasury Department and IRS announced Monday.  IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said that Build Back Better would've including $80billion in funds to the Internal Revenue Service to budget for more staff and better technology to stop tax cheats and better customer service.      'In many areas, we are unable to deliver the amount of service and enforcement that our taxpayers and tax system deserves and needs. The Supreme Court on Thursday returned a case over Texas' six-week abortion ban back to a federal court that twice upheld it, in the latest setback for pro-choice activists.  In handing it back to the US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, the justices rejected abortion providers and pro-choice advocates' wish to have the case sent to US District Judge Robert Pitman in western Texas, who previously blocked the ban.  The decision was signed off on by Donald Trump-appointed Justice Neil Gorsuch. Texas abortion providers scored a small victory last week when the conservative-majority court ruled that their case against the law can move forward. However they also allowed the law, which is known as S.B.8 deputizes private citizens to go after women seeking abortions and those who help them, to stay in effect while it's being litigated in a 5-4 vote.  'Every day S.B. 8 is in effect, it is causing devastation in Texas and surrounding states, forcing countless people to carry pregnancies against their will as they are unable to get the essential health care they need,' the...
