The Mountain West Conference is eliminating its two-division format for football, and beginning with the 2023 season the two teams with the highest conference winning percentages will compete in the championship game. San Jose State has been a member of the Mountain West in football since the 2013 season. The conference announced the move on Friday afternoon, saying that changing the format to ensure its top two regular-season teams meet in the title game will “put the Mountain West in the best position for a place in the College Football Playoff.” The Mountain West has never had a team participate in the College Football Playoff. The MW will continue with its existing Mountain and West Divisions in the fall of 2022, with the two divisional champions meeting in the MW Football Championship Game on Saturday, December 3. “Our membership has been working on concepts since last summer, as part of our strategic planning for the future of the Mountain West,” MW Commissioner Craig Thompson said in the conference’s announcement. “A single-division approach provides maximum flexibility to adapt the Conference schedule...

Per the NCAA, this does not change an institution’s official won-lost record."  Any game where both teams can't safely field squads because of COVID-19 will be ruled a "no contest." The Mountain West is not enforcing any minimum roster thresholds.  Additionally, the Mountain West said all situations can be "addressed on a...
No. 21 Missouri State pulled out of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament on Saturday after a positive COVID-19 test was found in Bradley’s program the night before. The two teams were scheduled to meet in the semifinals, but the Lady Bears decided to opt out and head home just before tip-off, not risking the chance of potentially getting infected. They are expected to make the NCAA Tournament when the field is announced Monday. The conference had a specific set of rules it came up with before the tournament began about what would happen if a team were to opt out or be unable to play because of positive COVID-19 tests. “We had policy guidelines on tournament re-seeding by the athletic administrators,” Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Doug Elgin said in a phone interview Saturday. “After Friday’s game if one team is unavailable the highest remaining seed advances, and we reshuffled the deck.” Drake, which was the No. 2 seed, was given a bye to the finals and will play the winner of the Bradley-Loyola, Chicago game on Sunday. The Bulldogs...
Sometimes, a team just needs to catch its breath and recompose. For San Jose State, halftime provided the tranquility necessary to overcome its biggest deficit of the season. San Jose State scored all 23 points in the second half Friday night, rallying to win 30-20 and secure a place in the Mountain West championship game for the first time in program history. The Spartans didn’t look the part of an undefeated team in the first half, entering the break down two touchdowns. There were some bright spots, but the Spartans were mired by a myriad of mistakes.  Matt Mercurio badly shanked a 34-yard field goal.  Nick Starkel threw a pick.  The offense couldn’t convert a fourth-and-one. Then, the Spartans seemed to remember who they were. San Jose State proceeded to outscore Nevada 23-0 in the second half, utterly outclassing its West Division foe en route to the biggest win in Brent Brennan’s coaching tenure. The most stark contrast between the game’s two halves was San Jose State’s performance on the ground....
Because of COVID-19 restrictions in Santa Clara County, Friday’s Nevada-San Jose State football game has been relocated to Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. Kick off will remain at 7 p.m.and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network. “Based on the latest COVID-19 protocols in our county and state and with the collaboration of Mountain West members UNLV, the University of New Mexico, Fresno State, and the University of Nevada, and the conference office, we will host Nevada at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas,”  San Jose State University athletic director Marie Tuite said in a statement released Sunday. With one regular-season game left, San Jose State (5-0) is in a prime position to qualify for the Mountain West championship game for the first time in program history. Nevada has just one loss this season.
Fewer than 10 days after being cleared to practice on campus, the San Jose State Spartans are set to open the 2020 college football season with a home game on Saturday against the Air Force Falcons. Due to coronavirus restrictions in Santa Clara County, the Spartans took their show on the road and spent the first half of October preparing to open a condensed Mountain West season in Humboldt County. San Jose State officials worked out a deal with Humboldt State to temporarily relocate the team 320 miles to the north to avoid Santa Clara County restrictions that did not permit contact drills until last week, but they returned last Friday to prepare for a long-awaited season-opener. The Spartans are one of three California college teams hosting home games on Saturday as Fresno State and San Diego State are also kicking off the Mountain West season. Air Force, San Jose State’s first opponent, has been practicing in Colorado since August 1 and played its opener three weeks ago against Navy. The Falcons will arrive at CEFCU...

So far, the PAC-12, Big 10 and now the Mountain West have all reversed course on canceling football. Below is a live look at all the teams deciding to play after originally making the call to cancel. How triggered are all the idiots who tried to cancel football right now? How trigged are they? Feed me their tears! Feed them to me! Give me all the outrage! Not only is the P5 completely back for the football season, but we’re now saving the G5. What a massive L for all the clowns in the circus trying to ruin football. You just...

The MWC’s decision leaves the Mid-American Conference as the only conference at the top level of college football that’s not playing football in the fall. But...
Less than seven weeks after deciding to delay fall sports until the spring, the Mountain West Conference’s Board of Directors on Thursday night reversed course and voted to resume athletic competition in the coming weeks, with an eight-game football season slated to begin in October. The conference announced it will begin its football season Oct. 24, with a championship game held Dec. 19. Thursday’s announcement came just hours after the Pac-12 approved a restart of competition, which includes an abbreviated football season that begins the weekend of Nov. 6-7. On Aug. 10, the Mountain West delayed the start of fall sports until the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But on Monday, the Board, comprised of the Mountain West’s 12 school presidents, received a proposal from their respective athletic directors to play an eight-game, conference-only football schedule. Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson told the Associated Press last week the conference would not play football this fall without its schools having the ability to test every day. The AP reported earlier this week, though, the conference is...
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – The Mountain West Conference, which includes San Jose State University, is reportedly considering a shortened football season that could begin next month. Conference sources told CBS Sports that the league’s presidents would meet on Friday and at least consider voting on whether to move forward with playing the season. The conference is reportedly aiming for an eight-game schedule starting October 24th, with a league championship on December 19th. A return to play plan would not be approved until a COVID-19 testing protocol, which still needs to be finalized by the league’s medical advisory board, is approved. The protocol includes testing three times a week, sources said. CBS Sports has also learned that it is uncertain if all 12 schools would be able to proceed together due to health restrictions impacting the conference’s three schools in California, including SJSU, Fresno State and San Diego state. “I don’t think everybody has an illusion everybody is going to play the same amount of games,” one Mountain West source told CBS Sports. A possible return to play for the...

They’re going to gear up and practice for a total of two games? How can you ask those players to put their bodies through training camp for...
