Second-year head coach Andy Avalos looks to make his mark as the face of Boise State football. After finishing third in its division only a year ago, Andy Avalos and his Boise State football team are expected to contend for a conference championship in what should be a deep Mountain West. This will be Avalos’ second year leading his alma mater’s program, having left Oregon to take over for Bryan Harsin once he resigned to become the next head coach at Auburn. Despite playing in the same Mountain Division as Air Force and Utah State, Boise State was picked to win the division and face Fresno State in the conference title bout. Expectations are sky high for Boise. Thus, coming in at No. 35 on FanSided’s Preseason Top 50 Rankings, the Boise State Broncos!Boise State football 2021 season in reviewAvalos returned to Boise after spending the 2019 and 2020 seasons as Mario Cristobal’s defensive coordinator at Oregon. Even with a coaching change, Fresno State football shouldn’t miss a beat in the 2022 season as the Bulldogs are primed to challenge in the Mountain West. Whenever Kalen DeBoer elected to leave Fresno State football for Washington, it seemed as if the Bulldogs might be put into a state of disarray. Thankfully, Jeff Tedford has come back to the program and seems like he’s going to prevent that from happening. Not just that, but he has every reason to believe that the team that he’s taken over can get to double-digit wins again and possible take the Mountain West crown. Coming at No. 39 in the FanSided Top 50 Preseason Rankings, the Fresno State Bulldogs.Fresno State Football 2021 season in reviewIn what was eventually DeBoer’s last season with the program, he earned his chance to jump to a Power 5 league. Despite a banged-up quarterback that was the team’s driving force, they used a defense that was one of the best in the Mountain West and a strong rushing attack to reel off a 10-3 season and a 6-2...
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Fresno State is bringing back Jeff Tedford for a second stint as coach after Kalen DeBoer left to take over at Washington. Athletic director Terry Tumey announced Wednesday that Tedford returns after coaching the Bulldogs from 2017-19. Tedford had a 26-14 record at his alma mater before stepping down for health reasons. Tedford took over a 1-11 team following the 2016 season and led the Bulldogs to double-digit wins his first two seasons, winning the division in both those seasons and the Mountain West Conference championship in 2018. Tedford played quarterback at Fresno State in 1981-82 under Jim Sweeney and coached at Fresno State under Sweeney from 1987-88 and 1992-96, and under coach Pat Hill in 1997. Tedford has a 108-71 career head coaching record, having also spent 11 seasons at California. Tedford will take over after the Bulldogs play in the New Mexico Bowl against UTEP on Dec. 18 under interim coach Lee Marks. ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25. SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Jake Haener threw for 343 yards with four touchdowns and Fresno State defeated San Jose State 40-9 on Thursday, winning its fourth Mountain West Conference Thanksgiving Day game. Fresno State (9-3, 6-2) ended the first half with back-to-back touchdowns three minutes apart, then opened the second half with a field goal and a touchdown to break away from San Jose State (5-7, 3-5). Haener connected with Juan Rodriguez from six yards out and then with Jordan Mims on a 45-yarder to build a 23-9 halftime lead. In the second half, Haener had touchdown passes of 29 yards to Jalen Cropper and 13 to Ronnie Rivers. Cropper caught seven passes for 71 yards, Rivers had five catches for 91 yards. Cropper also ran for a TD. Fresno State remains a half-game behind San Diego State in the Mountain West’s western division. SAN JOSE – The Battle for the Valley Trophy wasn’t much of a contest as San Jose State tasted defeat one final time on Thanksgiving Day, 40-9, against rival Fresno State. The Spartans (5-7, 3-5 Mountain West) failed to qualify for a bowl game in the regular-season finale after a second-consecutive rout at CEFCU Stadium in front of 15,323 fans. Last year’s Mountain West title and perfect regular season must seem like a mirage after San Jose State finished with an identical record to its pre-pandemic 2019 campaign. The Spartans trailed 23-9 at intermission after settling for field goals by Matt Mercurio during three trips into the red zone and never established any momentum on offense. San Jose State QB Nick Starkel – 19-of-42 for 260 yards – and his likely successor Nick Nash each lost fumbles in the first half as turnovers plagued the team to the end. There’s no point in denying that San Jose State failed to meet expectations in 2021. Coming off an unbeaten regular season to claim the program’s first Mountain West title, the Spartans fell flat multiple times this fall as the hype from an unprecedented campaign didn’t deliver a worthy encore performance. All is not lost, though. Thanksgiving Day is a chance for repentance at San Jose State (5-6, 3-4 Mountain West), which faces a must-win scenario to qualify for back-to-back bowl games for the first time in 35 years. Standing in the way is none other than rival Fresno State in the eighth rendition for the Battle of the Valley Trophy (Fresno State holds a 42-38-3 edge in the series history overall). “I don’t love where we’re at right now in terms of our record,” San Jose State coach Brent Brennan said. “I think that’s disappointing for everybody involved with Spartan football because we did have high expectations, so this game is huge for us.” Brennan, in his fifth season at the helm, could’ve left...

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Evan Williams made two of Fresno State’s four interceptions and Wyoming turned the ball over five times as the Bulldogs blanked Wyoming 17-0 on Saturday. Wyoming (4-2, 0-2 Mountain West Conference) was shut out for the first time since being blanked 45-0 by TCU in 2010. The shutout was the second for the Bulldogs (4-3, 1-2) this year, having beaten UConn 45-0 in their season opener, but the first on the road since Nov. 2, 1974, 41-0 over Cal State Northridge. The Bulldogs were slightly outgained by the Cowboys but scored all their points off turnovers, the three scoring drives covering a total of only 50 yards. The longest of the scoring drives — 41 yards — came after Sean Chambers fumbled on a keeper which led to Jake Haener’s 2-yard TD toss to Juan Rodriguez for the only points of the first half. SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – The San Jose State Spartans football matchup against the Fresno State Bulldogs scheduled for Saturday has been canceled, due to a COVID-19 case in the Fresno State program. “Though we have dutifully followed all proper protocols, and have received continual guidance from the Fresno County Department of Public Health, we unfortunately have confirmed a positive case of COVID-19 within our football program,” said Fresno State athletics director Terry Tumey. “In coordination with the Fresno County Department of Public Health and extensive contract tracing efforts, we have identified additional student-athletes who, per public health protocols, are required to be quarantined as a precaution,” Tumey went on to say. The Mountain West Conference has declared the game as a “no contest,” with no plan to reschedule the game. The Spartans have had a historic start this season, which started in late October due to the COVID-19 pandemic, going 4-0 for the first time since 1955. SAN JOSE — There’s simply no way to talk about the rivalry between San Jose State and Fresno State without mentioning the 1986 game at Spartan Stadium. Wild momentum swings, 1,072 yards of offense, 38 fourth-quarter points and 317 yards in penalties, San Jose State’s 45-41 win over Fresno State had it all, and was the defining moment of an era that saw at least one of the schools capture the conference championship nine times between 1981 and 1991. The present-day rivalry between the Spartans and Bulldogs isn’t at that point — at least not yet. But for the first time in nearly 30 years, their meeting Saturday in Fresno will have conference title implications. The Spartans are 4-0 for the first time since 1955 and are tied atop the Mountain West Conference with Nevada. With a win, SJSU can all but knock Fresno State (3-1) out of title contention and bolster its own chances of winning its first conference crown in 29 years. A loss, however, would put the Spartans in a precarious spot considering...
