PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Twenty-three candidates, an unusually large number, have filed nominating petitions for the Republican and Democratic nominations for U.S. Senate and governor of Pennsylvania. KDKA political editor Jon Delano breaks down what is shaping up to be a busy primary. READ MORE: Closure Of Westmoreland County Courthouse Garage Creates Parking Problems“We’re certainly facing an unprecedented election year with an unbelievable amount of candidates at the top of the ticket,” says Mike DeVanney, a Republican political strategist. It’s the first time in decades that no incumbent is running for governor and United States senator on the same ballot, and that has lots of candidates thinking this is their chance. But not unexpectedly, only one Democrat is running for governor: Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro. Ten Republicans would like the chance to take him on. They are former Congressman Lou Barletta, state Senator Jake Corman, Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Gale, political consultant Charlie Gerow, former Congresswoman Melissa Hart, state Senator Doug Mastriano, former U.S. Attorney Bill McSwain, Pittsburgh attorney Jason Richey, former Delaware County Councilman Dave White and heart...
John Madden certainly knew how to preach football, from his Pro Football Hall of Fame coaching career to his Emmy Award-winning broadcast days. In the wake of his death Tuesday at age 85, here are two of Madden’s offensive principles from a 2016 interview, as they’ll definitely factor into the 49ers’ home finale Sunday against the Houston Texans. No. 1, per Madden: “It’s a quarterback’s league. You have to have a quarterback. If you don’t have a quarterback, it’s an uphill battle all the time.” No. 2: “I believe you have to be able to run the ball. To be able to run the ball, you have to have a lead blocker. It’s hard to have one (rusher) back there and have a power running game.” Those two principles are not mutually exclusive, and they are key for the 49ers to rebound from a Dec. 23 loss at Tennessee, where Jimmy Garoppolo sustained a thumb injury. With Garoppolo ailing, the 49ers have to have a quarterback ready to lead them, and Trey Lance is expected...

The Giants and Carolina Panthers both required rebuilds after Dave Gettleman used a top 10 draft pick on a running back as the teams’ GM in back to back years. The absence of the Panthers’ Christian McCaffrey (hamstring) and the Giants’ Saquon Barkley (ankle) from Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium also reinforces the risk of using a premium pick on that position. After Sunday, McCaffrey will have missed 74% of the Panthers’ games since the start of the 2020 season and 24% of their games since he was drafted in 2017. Barkley will have missed 69.5% of the Giants’ games since the start of the 2020 season and 34.5% of the Giants’ games since he was drafted in 2018. The running back position was the second least valuable position on an NFL field in 2020, according to Pro Football Focus. The top 32 running backs generated 2.99 wins above replacement, ahead of only centers (2.53). Quarterbacks ranked first with a 53.3 WAR. “You look across the National Football League, I don’t think anyone’s building it around one player,” Panthers coach...
Indianapolis Colts running back is hopeful that players will be treated with respect no matter what vaccine choice they make. Indianapolis Colts running back Nyheim Hines has something in common with every running back in the NFL or probably whoever played the game of football. “There is a guy on our team who had open heart surgery so he is scared what the vaccine can do,” Hines said. “Each person has different health precautions. I think every person’s reason to why they are getting vaccinated or why they are not is something we should take into account.” Nyheim Hines is supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) through the Jiffy Lube #Drive2DoMore campaign that supports research and care to fund treatments and find cures for people living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related neuromuscular diseases.
What happened? Surveillance video obtained by Los Angeles police detectives showed a silver Dodge Avenger back up toward the group standing in the lot near Melrose Avenue and Vista Street around 7:10 p.m. after which two men emerged from the vehicle, police said. Image source: YouTube screenshot Words were apparently exchanged, cops said, and at least one of the men who exited the car pulled a handgun on the group. Image source: YouTube screenshot But the man in the group — dressed in a blue tank top and who had been holding a beige shopping bag — wasn't about to let the stickup continue. Police said he pulled a gun of his own and fired it at the two assailants "apparently to defend himself and others in his group from the would-be robbery suspects." New Delhi (CNN Business)Twitter is under siege in two countries that are critical for its global growth plans. The social media giant has been ensnared in a battle with the Indian government for months over free speech and other issues, and is contending with restrictive new rules pushed by New Delhi. If that wasn't enough, even more dramatic events are unfolding thousands of miles away along Africa's Western coast. Nigeria last week "indefinitely" blocked Twitter (TWTR) after the company deleted a post from President Muhammadu Buhari that threatened a brutal clampdown on unrest in Africa's most populous nation. The Nigerian government also ordered federal prosecutors to arrest users of the app. The restrictions in India and the ban in Nigeria are troublesome for Twitter. While the company does not break down user data for these countries, independent research suggests India is among its top five markets. Asia's third-largest economy — with its 700 million internet users and many more yet to come online — is also Twitter's top growth market. Meanwhile, nearly 20% of Nigeria's population of 200 million have Twitter...

The shifting demographics of the United States are creating more impetus to field political candidates of color — including newer Americans. “Well, it’s been a priority for both parties, including the Republican Party, for a long time,” said Alex Conant, a Washington-based Republican strategist who served as press secretary for his party’s national committee in 2008. Democrats have been better at promoting racial and ethnic minorities, he says, though, as Politico reported in July, the party establishment years ago had to be prodded to accept Black candidates outside of heavily Black districts. Alex Conant, Republican strategist: ‘Anyone who’s considering running [for political office] should run.’ (Skype/VOA)Republicans likely will “try even harder in the future,” Conant said. “We’re a big, diverse country. If you’re going to win elections, it helps to come from communities or represent communities that are casting the votes. … And that includes recruiting more Black candidates.” But how do aspiring politicians of color — especially those who are relative newcomers to America — get onto a ballot? Candidate training is essential, says Naquetta Ricks, who is among...

Joe Biden slammed President Donald Trump on Tuesday night for questioning potential running mate Tammy Duckworth's patriotism, calling it 'disgusting' and 'sickening.' The former vice president did not mince words when it came to his rival for the White House, saying Trump was carried 'around like a puppy in one of those little puppy cages' by Russian President Vladimir Putin and calling Trump's attacks on Duckworth a sign of the 'depravity' in the White House. Duckworth, the Democratic senator from Illinois who lost both legs while serving as a combat pilot in Iraq, is being vetted as Biden's running mate and he offered an impassioned defense of her during a virtual fundraiser.  'Thank you, Tammy. You're the best. I love you,' Biden said after she introduced him.  He praised her moral and physical courage. 'I can't think of anyone who has shown more courage of both kinds. I really mean it Tammy,' he said. 'I'm grateful for you here with me in this fight.'  Joe Biden slammed President Donald Trump on Tuesday night for questioning potential running mate Tammy Duckworth's...
President Donald Trump jumped into an angry clash between Tucker Carlson and Sen. Tammy Duckworth Tuesday after the Fox News host questioned the patriotism of the Iraq War vet who is a double amputee.   Duckworth, an Illinois Democrat, fired back at Carlson Monday night after the Fox News host excoriated her for comments calling for study and dialogue about whether statues of George Washington should be taken down.   Duckworth is a leading contender to join former Vice President Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket.  'Does @TuckerCarlson want to walk a mile in my legs and then tell me whether or not I love America?' Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill) asked on Twitter Monday 'Does @TuckerCarlson want to walk a mile in my legs and then tell me whether or not I love America?' she asked on Twitter.  Duckworth, a former Army pilot who flew missions in Iraq, committed what many analysts consider a political flub when she entertained the idea of taking down statues of the nation's first president, who also owned slaves. 'You're not supposed to criticize Tammy Duckworth in...
Washington (CNN)As Rep. Val Demings has risen through the political ranks, one line from her resume has stood out: her three-year tenure as the chief of the Orlando Police Department. That includes this moment, as presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden considers tapping her as his running mate. But as the nation once again grapples with the impact that law enforcement has on Black Americans after multiple killings of Black people at the hands of police, Demings' lengthy law enforcement career is getting renewed scrutiny, with some top Democrats arguing it positions the Black congresswoman perfectly for this moment of national reckoning, while others say it means she is deeply intertwined with the same law enforcement establishment at the center of skepticism and scrutiny.I want to see myself: Black women mount public and private campaign for Biden to pick a Black woman running mateDemings, in an interview with CNN, spoke highly of her nearly three decades with the Orlando Police Department, arguing that she became a police officer with hopes of changing an entity viewed skeptically by Black Americans from the...
