The brand's luxury "garbage bag" has a sticker price of $1,790, and while I don't have that much cash to spare on a purse, I recreated the look on a budget. 7I used yellow posterboard and a marker to create my own label for the trash bagCredit: HJ Hayes 7The $1,790 Trash Pouch by Balenciaga caused a stir in the fashion worldCredit: Balenciaga I'm not the only fashion icon to sport a trash purse this year. Balenciaga muse Kim Kardashian, who attended the fashion house's runway show wrapped in yellow caution tape, was gifted one of the bags, drawing criticism online. My version of the Balenciaga purse was actually made from three store-brand trash bags: one that acted as an exterior shell, one filled with air to give it volume, and one that I tied off into a half-size. Using fashion tape, I affixed that smaller pouch to the lining of my "shell" bag, so my belongings wouldn't...

The supernova explosion that triggered the birth of the solar system, by exciting a cloud of gas and dust, has been recreated in a lab using a laser and foam ball. Molecular clouds, like the one that contained the building blocks that led to the Sun and planets, can remain in a state of peaceful equilibrium forever, if left alone.  When triggered by an external event, like a shockwave sent from a supernova explosion, it can create pockets of dense material that collapse and forms a star. That is what is thought to have happened in the case of the solar system, according to researchers from the Polytechnic Institute of Paris in France. These events have never been observed, and mathematical simulations can't measure the complexities involved, so the team turned to more mundane tools.  They used a foam ball to represent a dense area within a molecular cloud, and a high power laser to send a blast wave that can propagate through a chamber of gas and then into the ball - observing the process using X-ray images.  The...

At the extreme pressures found at the bottom of the Earth's outer core, iron assumes a stronger form to cope with the stress in a process called 'twinning'. This is the conclusion of a study by researchers from the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory who recreated the pressures of the core in the laboratory. They did this by shining two lasers at a sample of iron the width of a human hair. The first created a shock wave that fleetingly heated and compressed the metal. The second laser — part of SLAC's Linac Coherent Light Source — enabled the team to probe the effect on the atomic structure of the iron within a billionth of a second. Scientists have created a mysterious phase of water – called 'superionic ice' – by beaming X-rays through a diamond in the lab.   Extreme conditions are necessary to produce superionic ice, sometimes referred to as 'hot ice', which adds to the other well-known phases of water – solid ice, liquid water and vapour gas.  Superionic ice is a special crystalline form, half solid, half liquid – and it's electrically conductive.   It's formed at extremely high temperatures and pressures at the centre of planets like Neptune and Uranus in the outer solar system.  Knowing more about the different phases of H2O – of which there are several – could help find life on other planets, the scientists believe.  Scientists used diamonds and a beam of brilliant X-rays to recreate the conditions deep inside planets, and created a phase of water called 'superionic ice', at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). They squeezed their ice samples between two pieces of diamond - the hardest substance on Earth - to simulate the intense pressures, and then shot lasers through the diamonds to heat the sample up...
The Kenyan safari lodge where Princess Elizabeth became Queen has been forced to close after nearly 90 years of welcoming royalty. Kenya's oldest safari lodge, Treetops - an elaborate treehouse on the edge of a watering hole in Aberdare National Park - was where the monarch famously 'went up the tree a Princess and came down a Queen.' The property was rebuilt after being burned down by guerillas a few years later, but when the Queen and Prince Philip stayed, their accommodation was a comfortable three-bedroom shack, with a small servants quarter, built in the upper branches of a giant fig tree.  Recreated at a game reserve in Cape Town, South Africa for series one of Netflix's The Crown, a nail-biting scene in episode two, sees Claire Foy, who portrayed Queen Elizabeth, almost killed by charging elephants, but a brave Prince Philip distracts one before chasing the enraged animal off.  The lodge is one of several casualties of the pandemic in Kenya where tourist revenue has fallen by 90 per cent due to travel restrictions, according to The Kenya Wildlife Service.  The Kenyan...
