Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Hilary Rhoda has filed for divorce from ex-New York Rangers star Sean Avery - six years after her mom filed for a restraining order against the hockey player and accused him of harassment. TMZ reported that the pair separated on July 17 - weeks after she took their son, Nash Avery, on a trip to Hawaii without Sean - and that the model cited 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason for their split.  Hilary, 35, and Sean, 42 - who played hockey in the NHL for 13 seasons - first met at the bar Warren 77 in New York City in 2009 and got engaged four years later - in November 2013. They tied the knot at the Parrish Art Museum in New York in October 2015, and together, they welcomed their son, Nash, in July 2020. However, Hilary and Sean's relationship was not exactly picture perfect - with a source telling New York Daily News early on in their relationship that Sean - who struggled to find work after leaving hockey - was 'brainwashing' the model, while 'freeloading' off her. The man tasked with guiding the San Jose State football team back to its 2020 heights will be a familiar face to Spartans supporters. After four years at Hawaii, quarterback Chevan Cordeiro transferred within the Mountain West to SJSU and will enter the season as the presumed starter. For Cordeiro, a fifth-year junior with an additional year of eligibility, San Jose already feels like home. “The players here really took me in with open arms and they’re like family,” Cordeiro said. “It felt like my second home. Everyone is one big family, and when I played under (former Hawaii) coach Nick Rolovich (in 2018-19), that’s how it felt too.” Cordeiro is set to succeed Nick Starkel, who led the Spartans to an undefeated regular season in 2020 and was a steady presence under center for two years. Nick Nash, now a senior, started last season when Starkel missed time with an arm injury, but the job this year is Cordeiro’s to lose. The newcomer from Hawaii may not have the effortless arm talent Starkel displayed, but his athleticism and quickness...

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame has hired VCU’s Shawn Stiffler to replace head baseball coach Link Jarrett, who left for Florida State after leading the Irish to the College World Series. Stiffler, whose hiring was announced Tuesday, led the Rams to three Atlantic 10 regular-season championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances in 10 seasons. The Rams are among seven programs to win at least 34 games each of the last eight full seasons. “Notre Dame is the finest university in the country,” Stiffler said. “It challenges everyone to become the best version of themselves and I cannot wait to continue recruiting, developing and working with student-athletes with that type of mindset.” VCU reached its first NCAA super regional in 2015 and made regional appearances in 2021 and 2022. Stiffler was 340-198 at VCU, including 146-71 in Atlantic 10 play. Stiffler takes over a program that went 41-17 for its first 40-win season since 2006. The Irish beat No. 1 national seed Tennessee in super regionals and went 1-2 in its first CWS appearance since 2002. ___ More...
The Pittsburgh Steelers are having their iconic Heinz Field undergoing a name change — and an examination of the buyers reveal how the deal went down. As Pittsburgh sports radio host Andrew Fillipponi eloquently put it, the ketchup bottles are coming down. Heinz Field will be no more, and in its place, a new corporate title arises: Acrisure Stadium. Many Steelers fans aren’t so keen on the name, which certainly doesn’t have the same gravitas that the Heinz Field moniker has developed over twenty years as the home of the Steelers. Back in 2001, the Steelers moved from Three Rivers Stadium to Heinz Field, and the field has become synonymous with Pittsburgh football. The uproar is reminiscent of what happened in Los Angeles last fall when the Staples Center became Crypto.com Arena. Like the legendary L.A. basketball franchises that followed the future of money, the Steelers made a shrewd financial decision, one that was likely facilitated by a minority shareholder in the team. As Fillipponi noted, Acrisure is a Michigan-based insurance brokerage firm. Pittsburgh sports writer Alan Saunders further expounded on...

Six weeks after revamping the process for determining which teams play for its championship, the Pac-12 is nearing another major change to its football model. The conference could unveil a new nine-game schedule model late next month at its preseason media event. “We’re working on several models,’’ commissioner George Kliavkoff told the Hotline during a wide-ranging interview. “At football media day, we’re likely to announce how we plan to schedule.” The division format has provided a backbone for the nine-game conference schedule since expansion in 2011, with teams playing each of their five division opponents annually and rotating through the other six at varying intervals. But the need to weight schedules based on division affiliation vanished last month when the Pac-12 announced the teams with the best winning percentage in conference games — not the division winners — would meet for the championship starting with the 2022 season. “For me, divisions have three meanings,’’ Kliavkoff said. “One is how they decide who plays in your championship game, and we have already solved for that with the change we announced. “Two,...
TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Iraqi official Mohammed Jalood was elected president of the International Weightlifting Federation in chaotic scenes on Saturday. In an election more than a year overdue, more controversy and confusion was stirred up when nine of the 11 candidates for president withdrew just before voting began. A vote was taken but Qatari candidate Yousef Al-Mana protested that Jalood signaled his withdrawal, too, when the two men sat together before the vote — which would have left Al-Mana unopposed. After the officials in charge ruled Jalood could take part after all because they couldn’t be sure whether he signaled his withdrawal or not, Al-Mana then told delegates he was stepping aside “to satisfy all of you.” That made Jalood the new president without a vote count. Jalood is a longtime IWF official who held the post of general secretary until Saturday and worked closely with Al-Mana at the Asian Weightlifting Federation. Jalood thanked Al-Mana for withdrawing and called him “a good friend” in comments on the IWF website. “Today, we have taken the first step in...

Bans on transgender women in international swimming and rugby this week opened the door for track and field to consider following suit in what could turn into a wave of policy changes in Olympic sports. The announcement Sunday by swimming’s governing body, FINA, was followed quickly by a show of support from World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, who was in Hungary for the swimming world championships. He said FINA’s decision was in the best interest of swimming and that his own federation, which oversees track and field and other running sports, would review its policies on transgender athletes and intersex athletes at the end of the year. “If we ever get pushed into a corner to that point where we’re making a judgment about fairness or inclusion, I will always fall down on the side of fairness,” Coe said. Experts viewed that as a signal that World Athletics officials could use the FINA precedent to block all transgender and intersex athletes — the latter referred to by clinical terminology as having differences in sex development — from competing in...

The new rules proposed by international soccer’s governing body, FIFA, are looking to erase testosterone requirements and allow trans female athletes to play against natural-born women just by “self-identifying.” Taking the exact opposite track as the ruling announced last weekend by swimming’s governing body where trans athletes will find more restrictions to participation, soccer looks to be ready to throw out all restrictions and allow any trans athlete to play just because they claim to be a woman, the Daily Mail reported. FIFA’s proposed rules change is only in the early stages of consideration and still must go through a debate session. Still, if adopted, the rules would throw the door wide for all transgender participants without any restrictions. The organization’s current rules require trans women athletes to have a testosterone level of five nanomoles per liter. In addition, they must have undergone testosterone suppression for 12 months before joining the league to compete as a woman. But the new rule would throw out all such restrictions. The Mail notes that some sports officials are shocked by FIFA’s proposal. For...
In an ongoing effort, commissioner George Kliavkoff is attempting to convince Pac-12 presidents and chancellors that investing in football can provide beneficial returns for athletic departments and the campus community. “Historically, I don’t think we’ve made a great case for the ROI of footbalI,’’ Kliavkoff told the Hotline following the 2021 season. “I’m not going to take the opportunity to speak to my 12 bosses without talking about it.” Kliavkoff need not worry about Utah’s Taylor Randall. The first-year president clearly believes in football’s immense ROI. Last week, Utah revealed a massive contract extension for coach Kyle Whittingham, who will receive $41 million over the next six years, culminating in an $8 million guarantee for the 2027 season. The revised contract, coming a few months after the school’s first appearance in the Rose Bowl, makes Whittingham the top-paid public school coach in the Pac-12. But perhaps the most interesting aspect of the deal is the university’s willingness to compensate Whittingham if a series of facility projects are not completed in a timely manner. BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — World swimming’s governing body has adopted new rules for transgender athletes, only permitting swimmers who transitioned before age 12 to compete in women’s events. FINA members voted 71.5% in favor of the new “gender inclusion policy” at the organization’s extraordinary general congress on Sunday. It will apply to all its events from Monday. The 24-page policy also includes proposals for a new “open competition” category. FINA said it was setting up a “a new working group that will spend the next six months looking at the most effective ways to set up this new category.” The vote came after members heard presentations from of three specialist groups – an athlete group, a science and medicine group and a legal and human rights group – that had been working together to form the policy following recommendations given by the International Olympic Committee last November. The IOC urged shifting the focus from individual testosterone levels and calling for evidence to prove when a performance advantage existed. ___ More AP sports: https://apnews.com/hub/sports and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press....

The Vermont native — and relative of Red Sox Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk — threw out the first pitch at Fenway Park on Tuesday. Bradley will miss Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night because he’ll be playing in the U.S. Open. “Jeez, what a time to be in Boston,” said Bradley, who attended the Ryder Cup as a child when it was played at The Country Club in 1999. “I wish I wasn’t playing in the tournament so I could have fun with all these sporting events. Really, really awesome.” Bradley played in the U.S. Open nine straight years before missing it last year. He didn’t qualify for Brookline until he finished second at the Wells Fargo on May 8 to move into the top 60 in the rankings. “I was pretty bummed out. But the silver lining was I was here,” he said. “I don’t take this for granted....
A majority of Americans oppose transgender women competing in women’s sports, a new survey finds. According to a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll, 58 percent of respondents said transgender women shouldn’t be allowed to participate in professional sports and college sports; 55 percent said they shouldn’t be allowed to compete in high school sports; and 49 percent said they shouldn’t be allowed to play in youth sports. Meanwhile, 28 percent of respondents said transgender women should be allowed to compete in professional and college sports; 30 percent said they should be able to play in high school sports; and 33 percent said they should be allowed to participate in youth sports. The poll comes amid 18 states prohibiting transgender women from playing in women’s sports. Transgender female athletes including University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas have come under fire for playing in women’s sports. “Critics say they have an unfair physical advantage against cisgender females because of factors such as generally having a greater muscle mass and larger skeletal frame, bone density and testosterone levels, which can help boost...

HARRY KANE has always been a player with plenty of drive. Although still only 28, the England captain already has one eye on life after football and is thinking about remaining in professional sport, albeit as a golfer. 3Harry Kane already has one eye on what he will do after hanging up his football bootsCredit: Getty 3Harry Kane pictured on the golf course with Ian Poulter back in 2019Credit: Getty It is not exactly unusual for a footballer to spend half his life on the golf course. Yet Kane, almost certain to end the year as England’s all-time record goalscorer, could join that elite group of sportsmen who have turned their hands to different sports. After tonight’s Nations League clash with Hungary, Kane will have just three weeks off after another rigorous season. As the losses mounted, at a rate that would strain any person’s patience or capacity for self-effacing humor, Andrew Berry finally understood the measure of his boss’ character. Berry was vice president of player personnel for the Cleveland Browns, and he worked for Sashi Brown, an unorthodox football executive doing his best to tear a woeful organization down and build it back up. The teams Brown constructed in 2016 and 2017 won exactly one game in 32 tries, about as bad as it gets by the NFL’s unforgiving calculus. As the horror show deepened and exasperated fans sharpened their pitchforks, Berry, the Browns’ general manager today, never saw Brown lose faith in his plan or turn cold to the people around him. “He is very secure in his skin,” he said. “He was the same guy every day, a steady hand to guide the ship when the ship was going through very turbulent waters. … That consistency was something that all of us as younger executives took with us, something that we really learned from Sashi.” There are critics who...
Mo Donegal and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. beat an eight-horse field without a clear favorite to win the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. Triple Crown veteran Todd Pletcher had simple advice Saturday for jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. before the Belmont Stakes. Mo Donegal pulled away down the home stretch and held off filly Nest to win the Belmont Stakes, giving Pletcher a 1-2 finish and his sixth Triple Crown victory, including four at this track on the outskirts of New York City. Rich Strike, a stunning Kentucky Derby winner at 80-to-1 odds, was sixth. Mo Donegal rounded the 1 1/2-mile distance in 2 minutes, 28.28 seconds, three lengths ahead of Nest — ridden by Ortiz’s brother, José. Pletcher, who lives on Long Island, adds another Belmont title following wins with Rags to Riches in 2007, Palace Malice in 2013 and Tapwrit in 2017. Commentary on Pac-12 developments on and off the court … Rising: Washington State basketball The Cougars have lost a slew of key players to the NBA Draft or transfer portal this spring, with a shell of a roster left in their wake. But good news finally appeared on the scene in the Palouse — two pieces, in fact. First, forward Mouhamed Gueye on Tuesday reversed course and returned to WSU after spending one month in the portal. The 6-foot-11 sophomore is a bit raw but one of the most physically gifted young big men in the conference. Given standard year-over-year development, he should be an impact player next season on both ends. Also on Tuesday, the Cougars bolstered their backcourt with the addition of Tennessee transfer Justin Powell, a rotation-level player whose career began two seasons ago at Auburn, where he shot 44 percent from 3-point range before a season-ending injury. (Because the move to WSU is his second transfer, Powell’s eligibility in 2022-23 is not guaranteed. He must apply for a waiver from the NCAA.) In our view,...
It’s been an offseason of change in the Mile High City. And it’s not quite official, but the Denver Broncos appear on the verge of new ownership. It is one of the original eight franchises born in the American Football League. The Denver Broncos debuted in 1960 and after a rough beginning have been one of the league’s most successful teams. Dating back to the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, only the Pittsburgh Steelers (495), Dallas Cowboys (471), New England Patriots (466) and Miami Dolphins (461) have won more regular-season games than the Broncos (456). And after making a habit of losing Super Bowls, the franchise has hoisted three Lombardi Trophies. This offseason, the organization hired a new head coach in former Green Bay Packers’ offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. But the team made even bigger headlines when they gave up plenty to obtain perennial Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks. But that news, while obviously substantial, could take a big-time back seat to what could become official very soon. Rob Walton, an heir to the Walmart fortune, is...
MOUNTAIN VIEW – As a seventh-grader, Jessica Oakland watched from the dugout while the St. Francis softball team claimed its first West Catholic Athletic League title. It was a stunning last-to-first turnaround by the Lancers, who hired a new coach prior to the 2017 campaign. Her father. Five years later Mike Oakland embraced his oldest of three daughters – now a senior co-captain – on the field after St. Francis crowned itself as the inaugural California Interscholastic Federation NorCal Division I champion following a 6-0 victory over visiting Clovis. “It’s special, definitely,” said Oakland, who previously claimed three Central Coast Section in 10 years as the baseball coach at St. Francis. “When we first took over the program, we weren’t so hot. We got better, and (Jessica) and her senior class took us to another level – a much-different level. I don’t know if A) how we’re going to replace them, or if B) if there’ll ever be a better senior class than that.” He added: “I don’t know if we’ll ever be as good as we are right now.”...

Commentary on Pac-12 developments on and off the field, and court … Rising: Recruiting threats A new marauder has appeared on the recruiting trail, poised to inflict additional damage on the Pac-12 talent pipeline. It’s not a blue blood or even a recently-risen powerhouse. It’s a basketball school, in fact. Don’t look now, but Louisville has become a problem for the Pac-12. The Cardinals currently own commitments from four Southern California prospects in the class of 2023 — each of them carrying a four-star rating by 247Sports. A conference struggling to repel the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, Clemson and Georgia now must deal with a program that owns zero national titles (in football) and hasn’t posted a 10-win season in almost a decade. What in the name of the Derby City is going on? The key to Louisville’s sudden success in the heart of Pac-12 country is Pierce Clarkson, a four-star quarterback from prep powerSt. John Bosco and the son of noted California-based quarterback coach Steve Clarkson. Once the Cardinals landed Clarkson earlier this year, they became a...
The brilliant new book Cover Story by Alex Wong, tells the history of the NBA through its most iconic magazine covers at SLAM, Sports Illustrated and more. Alex Wong has been one of the most creative NBA writers for years, continually coming up with features on topics that no one else would have thought of. His debut book, Cover Story, which explores two decades of basketball history by looking at a number of iconic magazine covers from 1984-2003, follows this trend. Wong’s book arises from his own fascination with magazine covers growing up; in the introduction, he recalls many issues of publications like Sports Illustrated, SLAM, The Source, and ESPN The Magazine “piling up along the windowsill in our family home’s kitchen.” Looking at these covers, he hopes to “provide a snapshot of a golden age of publishing and a period of transformative growth for the sport of basketball.” He succeeds. Cover Story is split into four sections. The first looks at Sports Illustrated, focusing on the magazine’s relationship with Michael Jordan, and the reciprocal relationship between Jordan and the...
