Stefani Reynolds/AFP via Getty Grocery store shelves where baby formula is typically stocked are locked and nearly empty in Washington, DC, on May 11, 2022. The conditions that led to a shortage of baby formula were set in motion long before the February 2022 closure of the Similac factory tipped the U.S. into a crisis. Retailers nationwide reported supplies of baby formula were out of stock at a rate of 43% during the week ended May 8, 2022, compared with less than 5% in the first half of 2021. In some states, such as Texas and Tennessee, shortages were over 50%, which has prompted parents to travel long distances and pay exorbitant sums of money to grab dwindling supplies of formula for their babies. News that the Food and Drug Administration and Similac-maker Abbott have reached a deal to reopen the formula factory in Sturgis, Michigan, is welcome news for desperate parents, but it will do little to alleviate the shortage anytime soon. This is in no small part because of the very nature of America’s baby formula...
Walmart has been forced to dramatically increase the starting salaries of truck drivers in order to keep the retailer's supply chain going after the industry shed 4,900 drivers in a single year. The nation's largest retailer has also launched a retraining program to give employees who work in its distribution centers the chance to become certified Walmart truck drivers by completing a 12-week program taught by the company's drivers. Walmart, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, has confirmed it is raising the starting salaries salary from $87,500 to between $95,000 and $110,000, according to Walmart spokeswoman Anne Hatfield.   The new salaries were announced on Thursday as a national trucker shortage puts severe pressure on freight movement throughout America.   The American Trucking Association estimates that the U.S. is short by about 80,000 drivers. Walmart said about 20 workers in Dallas and Dover, Delaware, have earned their commercial driver's licenses by completing the 12-week training course.  About 400 to 800 workers in the company's supply-chain network are expected to complete the truck-driving program this year, Hatfield said. The starting range for new truck drivers...
Obama-era Treasury official Steven Rattner tore into President Biden for being 'disingenuous' about inflation on Friday.  In a New York Times op-ed entitled 'Biden Keeps Blaming the Supply Chain for Inflation. That's Dishonest,' Rattner said Thursday that supply issues are 'by no means the root cause of our inflation.' Biden has consistently blamed backlogged ports for the highest inflation in 40 years - at 7.5% year-over-year as of January.  'The reason for the inflation is the supply chains were cut off,' Biden said in an interview with NBC's Lester Holt last week.   'Blaming inflation on supply lines is like complaining about your sweater keeping you too warm after you've added several logs to the fireplace,' Rattner quipped.   The former counselor to the Treasury secretary said that Biden also needs to shift his focus beyond anti-trust enforcement.  The White House 'has promised robust antitrust enforcement, but while that is long overdue, it will have no discernible impact on competition or prices for years. And the high prices of meat and hearing aids, both of which Mr. Biden has vowed to address,...
"For the first four weeks, he was mostly offline except for major agency decisions and matters that could not be delegated," a Transportation Department spokesman told the outlet. “He has been ramping up activities since then." Hot Air's Ed Morrissey pointed out that this was a strange move for someone in a Cabinet post. "Since when have Cabinet secretaries taken months off at a time for parental leave?" Morrissey asked. "Since now, apparently, even when crises brew within their portfolio. After all, Cabinet officials do not formally fall under the federal family leave system, and for good reason. Those positions are considered too critical for the operation of government to mandate such lengthy absences." Politico noted that historically Cabinet secretaries have worked to come back sooner. For example, the outlet noted, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro was off for about a week after his child was born. The reason Buttigieg's leave stands out as unusual is because, as Morrissey noted, Cabinet secretaries are not eligible for federal paid family leave benefits. According to the Office of...

DeKalb County responded to an Open Records Request from The Georgia Star News to produce the ballot transfer forms that formed the critical chain of custody link in the absentee ballots deposited in the near 300 drop boxes in the state and transported to county election offices in a letter received on Friday that said the county did not know if such records exist. Earlier this week, the Secretary of States’ office told Breitbart News that it did not know how many of the 1.3 million absentee ballots cast in the 2020 general election  were delivered by mail vs. drop box, but the counties should know. The Georgia Star News filed an open records request on Tuesday for all “ballot transfer forms” from the Nov. 3 General Election in DeKalb County. But there is no way to determine the chain of custody. The open records request reply, received from Assistant County Attorney at DeKalb County Dexter Q. Bond, Jr., stated, “it has not yet been determined if responsive records to your request exist.” The...
Darline Philius and a group of her classmates started an "I love you" chain at the end of their ancient mythology class. @dahrleene/TikTok David Branscome, a professor at Florida State University, has been teaching a 180-person ancient mythology class via Zoom this semester.  One student said "I love you" before signing off one day, and Branscome replied: "I love you, too." Now, a handful of Branscome's students end each virtual class by saying "I love you."  The professor told Insider the "I love you" chain "was very nice," and he really does "care about each and every one" of his students.  Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. When David Branscome, a professor at Florida State University, ends his online classes, he'll usually say, "See you next time" or "Have a great weekend." In his 180-person ancient mythology course, those farewells were often met with the expected "thank you" and "you, too." But a few weeks into the semester, one student opted for an "I love you" instead.  "I was surprised," Branscome told Insider. "So, I said, 'I...
