Russia has warned it can obliterate Nato satellites with its new 'Star Warrior' technology to render the West's GPS-guided missiles useless in the latest provocation in its stand-off with Ukraine. State TV last night claimed Moscow's anti-satellite (ASAT) missiles could destroy 32 Nato satellites and 'blind all their missiles, planes and ships, not to mention the ground forces.' The ASAT technology was tested on a defunct Soviet satellite last week, sending shrapnel flying towards the International Space Station (ISS), and provoking outrage from NASA and Washington. This was a warning shot to the West, state TV claimed. The chilling threat comes after Vladimir Putin sent more than 94,000 troops to the border with Ukraine, sparking fears of a three-pronged invasion that would dwarf the annexation of Crimea in 2014.   The White House on Monday said it had 'serious concerns' over Moscow's buildup of military hardware along the frontier, including tanks and missile batteries, as well as its sustained threats to Kiev. 'We continue to have serious concerns about Russian military activities and harsh rhetoric toward Ukraine and call on Moscow to deescalate...

AN official report has concluded that Home Secretary Priti Patel broke the ministerial code after “shouting, screaming and swearing” at civil servants. A source says: “She would storm out of her office and say, ‘Why is everyone so f***ing useless?’ She would tell officials their work was f***ing useless.” 7Was Priti Patel a bully, or is it just a word lazy gits use to dodge criticism? Writes Jane MooreCredit: PA:Press Association In the Fleet Street newsrooms of old, that would have been considered a compliment. Equally, any serving soldier will read the detail of what Ms Patel has been accused of and wonder what all the fuss is about. Particularly if they’re in the special services where, to get that far, they will have undergone rigorous testing and had, “You’re f***ing useless” — and far worse — screamed in their face multiple times. But then, if you’re being parachuted into a war zone in the dead of night to take out a bunch of terrorists with nothing to lose, you need all the mental strength you can muster. So anyone...
Donald Trump was given the experimental antibody treatment REGN-COV2 as well as a host of other drugs to treat his coronavirus infection Experts have slammed Donald Trump's 'irresponsible' claim that he was cured of coronavirus by an experimental drug made by US pharmaceutical giant Regeneron. The US President praised the experimental antibody medication in a rambling video outside of the White House Rose Garden yesterday. Mr Trump said he was cured of his illness the same day he was given the drug and has now promised to give it out for free to every American in hospital with severe Covid-19. Regeneron hasn't publicly stated how much it will cost, but similar therapies that use antibodies - proteins produced by the body which fight off diseases - to treat conditions such as cancer can cost tens of thousands of dollars per patient.  But leading scientists have urged Mr Trump to squeeze the brakes on his enthusiasm because there is no proof yet that it works and won't cause adverse side effects. Professor Jake Scott, an infectious disease expert at Stanford University,...
Coronavirus antibodies in blood plasma donations fade rapidly after symptoms first appear, a new study suggests. Researchers followed a small group of recovered COVID-19 patients who donated their blood and found all of them showed decreases in antibodies after three months. What's more, just three weeks later, levels for half of the detectable antibodies fell again.   The team, from Héma-Québec, a blood donation center in Québec, Canada, says the findings suggest the earlier plasma is collected after someone recovers from COVID-19, the better. Additionally, they add that studies using antibodies tests to determine how many people have recovered from the virus may be undercounting the true figure. Convalescent plasma therapy is when the liquid portion of blood is taken from a recovered COVID-19 patients and transferred into sick patients in hopes they will develop the antibodies needed to fight off the infection. Pictured: A medical worker holding a bag of blood plasma A new study from Héma-Québec, in Canada, found that 15 recovered COVID-19 patients who donated plasma had antibody levels drop after three months and again...

By Robin Foster, HealthDay Reporter (HealthDay) THURSDAY, July 16, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- It's the Holy Grail for containing the spread of coronavirus, but contact tracing only works if it is done quickly, researchers report. The modeling study showed that even if all contacts are successfully traced, a delay of three days or more between the start of symptoms and testing will not reduce transmission of the virus sufficiently to control further spread. The news couldn't come at a worse time, as surging coronavirus cases are swamping labs across the country and triggering delays in test results. To be successful, contact tracing must keep the rate of transmission of the virus below 1, which means the average number of people who will be infected by a single infected person must be less than 1. The researchers compared the effectiveness of conventional and app-based contact tracing strategies. The best case scenario -- no delays and at least 80% of contacts traced -- would reduce the rate of transmission from 1.2 to around 0.8, and 80% of onward transmission by a diagnosed...
