A GARDENING expert has revealed the six easy ways you can make sure your houseplants don't die during the upcoming heatwave. While houseplants can be difficult to look after at the best of times, these six tips should see them through the hot summer months. 2there are six easy steps to take that will make sure your houseplants don't die during the heatwaveCredit: Getty And unsurprisingly, the first tip Morag Hill, Co-Founder of The Little Botanical, suggests is to make sure you water your plants more. “An excellent tip is to take them out of their ceramic pots and pop them in shallow water in your bath or sink for two to three hours, so they can soak up the water they need," Mr Hill told the Express. And during the hotter months it's important to keep houseplants out of direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves and result in the plants dying. READ MORE GARDENING TIPSGROW WAY?! Terron Armstead chip-blocked the defensive end to the offensive guard, and then the Miami Dolphins’ new left tackle sprinted about 10 yards downfield on a right-side run to seal off the outside linebacker during Friday’s early 11-on-11 period. It was the first time the Dolphins’ big-ticket free-agent addition participated in an 11-on-11 session wearing pads — and he was seemingly testing out his surgically repaired knee. The 10-year veteran the Dolphins signed to a five-year, $87.5 million deal, which guaranteed him $30.1 million, has sparingly participated in practice, much less 11-on-11 work. So it was good to see Armstead on the field, and moving like the elite athlete he’s known to be for a handful of snaps. “This is a process,” said Armstead, a three-time Pro Bowl selection. “We are building up to peak performance.” Armstead missed nine games last season because of elbow and knee problems he played through, and the thought process has been to get the 31-year-old ready for the Sept. 11 season opener against the New England Patriots, which is five weeks away. Armstead is aware...
POP STAR Becky Hill has hit back at vile sexist trolls who criticised the outfit she wore for her performance at the Euros final. Jaylen Waddle put on a tutorial about Houston rap music on Thursday, and it is possible his music showcase might carry over to Friday, based on his productivity in the Miami Dolphins’ second practice. “Ya’ll liked that playlist?” Waddle asked the media after taking off his orange jersey. The orange jersey, which is given to the previous day’s top performer by the Dolphins coaches, is a reward system that gives players an opportunity to control the music played the next day at practice. Waddle’s playlist, which began with Z-Ro song “Mo City Don,” stood out just as much as his half dozen receptions, which consistently moved the chains. His performance was so impressive Waddle might become the first Dolphins player to earn the orange jersey for back-to-back standout performances during the Mike McDaniel era. But it wasn’t just Waddle getting off on the Dolphins secondary, which was practicing without Byron Jones, who is on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of an ankle injury, and Xavien Howard, whose participation is limited daily to a handful of reps early in...
Getty Images Trysten Hill waits for the next play against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021. With Denver Broncos veterans and rookies arriving in training camp on July 27, there will be eyes on how the team’s depth looks in every position. An unsexy position that could be talked about more is the defensive tackle position. Free agent addition D.J. Jones and Dre’Mont Jones headline the group with DeShawn Williams and Mike Purcell behind them. Other than the first four players mentioned, Denver has a group of young and/or unproven players. Defensive linemen Eyioma Uwazurike and Matt Henningsen were both selected in the 2022 NFL Draft. McTelvin Agim, Jonathan Kongbo and Jonathan Harris lack experience. The Broncos could use another veteran to add to their group. Especially since Sports Illustrated’s Mile High Huddle analyst Erick Trickell, who spoke on the “Dove Valley Deep Divers” podcast, believes Purcell is a possible cut candidate. There’s a player out there who could be a fit for Denver on the defensive line. While he’s not yet available at the moment, there’s a chance for the player...

One Tree Hill star Bevin Prince’s 33-year-old husband William Friend has died after being struck by lightning Sunday while on a boat during a thunderstorm. Authorities discovered Friend on a boat Masonboro Island off the coast of Wilmington, North Carolina, after he had been struck by lightning during a storm, according to a report by WECT6 News. The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the Wilmington Police Department’s Marine Unit responded to the incident after civilians flagged them down during a routine patrol, the outlet added. An emergency team also performed CPR on Friend as they were taking him to Bradley Creek Marina to meet EMS, who moved him to an ambulance, where they attempted to resuscitate him for 20 minutes. Friend was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the tragedy, Prince’s best friend actress Odette Annable paid tribute to Friend — who married the One Tree Hill star in 2016 — in an Instagram post on Wednesday. “Will, it feels surreal writing this. Mostly because it feels like you were just getting started,” Annable wrote in the caption. “The life and love that you gave to...

Getty Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill watch from the bench on October 24, 2021. Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill stirred the pot within Chiefs Kingdom recently when the former Kansas City Chiefs receiver said his new quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, was more accurate than Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes during his It Needed to be Said podcast premiere. That was one of several things Hill said on his podcast that shined a negative light on the Chiefs. It was a surprising decision by Hill to take this course of action after leaving an organization that helped put him on a Hall of Fame trajectory. He’s leaving a sour taste in the mouths of those he left behind in Kansas City to seek more money in Miami. The latest Chiefs news straight to your inbox! BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Bishop Douglass recalls being a lifeguard at Baltimore’s segregated swimming pool in the 1950s. Pool No. 2, as it was known, served over 100,000 Black residents in Baltimore during segregation, according to the city. “When the temperature got around 90, I would always call the pool the Ganges River during Holy Week,” Douglass joked. “The pool catered to the entire city of Baltimore.”The pool was in the northeastern section of Druid Hill Park. It closed in 1955. Now, it’s filled in with dirt and grass as a public art display and relic of America’s segregated past.“In my (military) uniform, I couldn’t go to the movies. I couldn’t buy sandwiches and things from the store. This was 1956,” Edward Clapp, 89, said. “This pool was the only place we had to swim.”The pool was 100 by 105 feet. It was so popular that people needed to be admitted in shifts. It was just half the size of the whites-only Pool No. 1. “They knew they’d always find their friends and whatnot at the pool!” Bishop said. “They didn’t believe a...
A 33-year-old central Pennsylvania former convict admitted to police that he had secretly been recording women using his cellphone in the bathroom at Turkey Hill, police say. Manor Township police first were alerted to the secret recording going on when they "received a report of invasion of privacy" at the Turkey Hill located in the 2600 block of River Road, Conestoga at around 2 p.m. on March 18, according to a release by the department. That day, a woman "used the restroom and observed the recording," and immediately deleted it, police say. But police learned during a warrant search of video content on his phone, Terry Allen Miller, of Columbia, had used his phone to make a similar recording of another unknown woman in the restroom months prior, according to the release. Miller admitted to making the recordings during an interview with the police, they say. Cpl. Pete Papadopoulos charged Miller with two misdemeanors for invasion of privacy, according to police and court documents. His preliminary hearing has been scheduled before Magisterial District Judge Joshua R. Keller at 1:30...
Plenty has been made of Tua Tagovailoa’s arm strength, and whether or not the Miami Dolphins’ starting quarterback has the ability to stretch the field with longer throws. Even though Tagovailoa connected on a half dozen or so deep passes last season, his critics continue to question if his supposed arm limitations will limit Tyreek Hill’s effectiveness. Tagovailoa and Hill did their best to silence those concerns by connecting on two long passes during the 11-on-11 periods of Thursday’s mandatory minicamp practice. On the first deep ball, which Hill scored on and subsequently punted the ball to celebrate, the six-time Pro Bowl receiver slipped Noah Igbinoghene’s coverage and got behind the Dolphins safeties and Tagovailoa hit him in stride. On the second deep ball, which came during the late 11-on-11 session, Hill got behind the entire Dolphins defense by about 7 yards and had to wait for the beautiful pass from Tagovailoa, which traveled 51 yards in the air. While it’s possible that Hill could have scored on the throw, the Dolphins ruled that he was stopped inside the 5-yard...

Getty Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on January 30, 2022. T he Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver room is very different from what it was during the 2021 season. The defending AFC champions signed former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster during free agency this offseason before they traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins. They also lost receivers Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson to free agency. Following the Hill trade, the Chiefs signed former Green Bay Packers receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling and also drafted Western Michigan pass-catcher Skyy Moore in the second round. Tua Tagovailoa may have been out with a non-COVID-related illness for Tuesday’s practice of organized team activities, but the Miami Dolphins quarterback has still been receiving significant praise from his new coach, Mike McDaniel, and top wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, during the offseason sessions. “I’ve seen a guy that’s attacking the moment,” said McDaniel in his pre-practice press conference, “a guy that really likes to play football.” Tuesday’s OTA session was the second one open to the media after Tagovailoa impressed in the first one a week earlier. Among the third-year signal-caller’s top passes that day, a deep throw with some arc over the top of the defense to Preston Williams down the sideline and another with intermediate one with zip to the outside, where tight end Mike Gesicki was hit in stride. At the Dolphins’ next practice, Tagovailoa was given the team’s orange jersey, which signifies the practice player of the day from the previous session and allows him to play team DJ, controlling the music that’s played during practice. McDaniel lauded Tagovailoa’s instincts with which he plays quarterback,...

Fiona Hill, onetime adviser on Russia to former President Donald Trump, recalled a "bizarre" dinner she had with Russian President Vladimir Putin in which he smelled odd and refrained from eating or drinking during the meal. Putin exuded a peculiar "freshly laundered" fragrance and strove toward an "all in command" strongman persona in a carefully crafted appearance at the dinner, Hill told the BBC Sounds's Desert Island Discs show. "Now, this sounds really bizarre, but I could smell that he was freshly laundered. He wasn't wearing cologne, but it was almost like he had stepped out of some special preparatory bath or something into the moment," Hill recalled. "He was just all in command of himself, projecting this image. I thought, 'Wow. Look at this. Every little element of this is staged. This is a performance,'" she added. Owners Andrew Markert, Bart Hutchins and Mackenzie Conway started the Fight Club concept to make use of the Beuchert’s Saloon space after it temporarily closed during the early days of the pandemic. Its over-the-top take on sandwiches drew an immediate following. “The support we received from the Capitol Hill neighborhood was amazing. We had people who would order sandwiches multiple times a week just because they wanted to see us succeed during a very scary time,” Hutchins said. “It feels somewhat poetic that our permanent home would remain on the Hill. It’s our way of saying thank you...
(CNN) — A hillside near the Alaskan community of Lowell Point was still unstable after a Saturday landslide that blocked the road connecting the resort area to the city of Seward. Brenda Ballou, a spokesperson for the city, told CNN a few hundred people live in Lowell Point, an unincorporated area on the Kenai Peninsula that’s popular with tourists. Marissa Beck, who owns a rental property in Seward, told CNN there are many cabins and rental houses at Lowell Point, and guests are now stuck there or can’t get to their rentals from Seward. Many people are taking water taxis or their own boats to get to the other side of the slide. No one was hurt when the slide occurred, Seward City Manager Janette Bower said in a Facebook post Saturday.  According to Ballou, no utilities were damaged in the landslide and communication remains open with Lowell Point. Dramatic video from a bystander shows tall trees sliding down the steep hill and toppling onto the bayside roadway. Nathaniel Caole was headed to walk his dogs on Saturday evening when...
Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer has been suspended from Major League Baseball for two seasons over allegations he punched and choked a woman into unconsciousness during sex in 2021.  Bauer has repeatedly denied the allegations, and this week filed a lawsuit against his accuser, San Diego woman Lindsey Hill.  Los Angeles prosecutors said in February there was insufficient evidence to prove the woman's accusations beyond a reasonable doubt. The pitcher will be suspended for 342 games, starting Friday, for violating the MLB's domestic violence policy.  This is a developing story.  Trevor Bauer steps out of the courthouse after the last day of the hearings in August 2021. Subscribe to our print magazine.Last weekend, we were graced with a whole new batch of foibles of the Trump administration, this time from the perspective of onetime adviser Fiona Hill and couched in a New York Times Magazine article titled “This Was Trump Pulling a Putin.” You might remember Hill’s emergence on the national scene during the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump. An expert on Russia, she had worked under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and testified on Trump’s plan to use foreign policy to try to get dirt on his political opponents (namely, the Bidens). A good chunk of Draper’s story is about how Hill believes January 6 was presaged by Trump’s policies toward Putin. It recounts Hill’s belief that not only Trump’s but Bush’s and Obama’s policies toward Putin set the stage for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. I have my doubts on these fronts, which seem both Trump and US-centric. Still,...

Terron Armstead was walking through the Miami Dolphins’ new state-of-the-art practice facility and saw Dan Marino’s name on one of the offices. The three-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman, who was in South Florida on his one and only free agent visit, didn’t know if he’d see the Hall of Fame quarterback. Then he attended an offensive meeting during his recruiting visit, where he was being wooed by the Dolphins brass and coaching staff, and there Marino was. “He came up and introduced himself like I didn’t know him, which was crazy,” Armstead said. That didn’t close the five-year, $47 million deal, but it certainly helped, considering Armstead sported a retro Marino jersey — which was accented by orange sneakers — during his introductory press conference on Thursday. Tyreek Hill, for whom the team sent a private plane to Ocala on Thursday to pick up him and his family following Wednesday’s blockbuster trade with Kansas City, couldn’t stop himself from being envious. “Why didn’t I get to meet Dan Marino?” said Hill, a six-time Pro Bowler subsequently signed to a record-setting,...
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Jon Rahm plays so much during the West Coast swing that he could never find room in his schedule for the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Now he has 1.5 million reasons to make his debut at Bay Hill. Rahm, the U.S. Open champion and No. 1 player in the world, finished at No. 9 in the inaugural “Player Impact Program” that awards players who generate the most positive interest in golf. He received a $3 million bonus, but it comes with a catch. The first payment is immediate, which in banking terms means within 30 days. The second installment is paid only after the top 10 players and the PGA Tour agree on a new tournament for them to play. For someone like Phil Mickelson — he didn’t win as he claimed in December, but finished second to Tiger Woods — it was the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua. For Rahm, it was Bay Hill. His caddie, Adam Hayes, always told the Spaniard he would like it. Rahm played nine holes on Tuesday and the pro-am...
Russia expert Dr. Fiona Hill has issued a dire warning about Russian President Vladimir Putin's willingness to use nuclear weapons as his military seeks to batter Ukraine into submission. The former star witness of the first Trump impeachment speculates that the Russian strongman has been huddled in the basement of the Kremlin during the pandemic poring over old maps of the already expansive Russian state – with designs on restoring imperial dominion.  'The thing about Putin is, if he has an instrument, he wants to use it. Why have it if you can't?' she said – pointing to his operatives' use of a radioactive polonium and the nerve agent Novochok in assassinations and assassination attempts.   'So if anybody thinks that Putin wouldn't use something that he's got that is unusual and cruel, think again,' she added.  'Every time you think, "No, he wouldn't, would he?" Well, yes, he would,' Hill said in an extensive interview with Politico as the Putin's invasion unfolded. Dr. Fiona Hill, a Russia expert and former member of the National Security Council, said in an interview that Russian...

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer will not face any charges for allegedly choking a woman into unconsciousness, punching her repeatedly, and forcibly having anal sex without her consent during two sexual encounters last year. 'After a thorough review of all the available evidence, including the civil restraining order proceedings, witness statements and the physical evidence, the People are unable to prove the relevant charges beyond a reasonable doubt,' read a declination filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office and provided to DailyMail.com.  TMZ is reporting that the 31-year-old former Cy Young winner won't be charged, in part, because of text messages sent by the woman identified as Ms. Hill to Bauer in which she indicated she wanted to have rough sex with him.  Bauer's lawyers have maintained that he was led to believe that she had enjoyed their first sexual encounter because of text messages she sent to him: 'Choke me out…..Never been more turned on in my life…Give me all the pain.'  Despite Tuesday's news, Bauer remains under investigation by Major League Baseball, a league spokesman told DailyMail.com....
By Dave Pehling SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A longtime figure on the Bay Area’s rock and metal scene explores a different side of music when vocalist Sven Söderlund and his Masterful Orchestra perform at a pre-Valentine’s Day show at the Bottom of the Hill Friday night. A well-regarded metal guitarist who came up during the rise of the thrash-metal scene in San Francisco during the early ’80s, Soderlund was raised in a musical family (both his parents played jazz) and picked up the six-string at the age of nine. By 1984, he had been invited to join then fledgling thrash outfit Mordred before eventually striking out on to found Mercenary with Mordred guitarist Danny White. While Mercenary would only play a couple of gigs and record a demo in 1986 during it’s initial existence before imploding, the group achieved a sort of legendary status locally and in Europe as their demo was shared between metal fans. Söderlund would also work in the music industry as a roadie and guitar tech, touring extensively with Exodus and other acts. As...
The NHL All-Star Game and NFL Pro Bowl were both held in Las Vegas over the weekend, and the dueling events led to a great time for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Hill played in the Pro Bowl and attended the NHL All-Star Game, where he was interviewed by ESPN’s Lauren Rutledge. During the lively conversation, Hill challenged eight-time gold medal winner Usain Bolt to a race before adding, “there is one more thing I want to do before I leave this game.” The 27-year-old wide receiver proceeded to saturate himself with 32 ounces of beer in an attempt at giving his best impersonation of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Much like the former WWE champion, Hill grabbed two cans of beer and slammed them together above his head. Unlike the former WWE champion, Hill didn’t appear to get one ounce of beer in his mouth. Two Bud Heavy tallboys, wasted. Despite the spillage, the performance was memorable. Rutledge quickly dodged the beer shower, before returning to ask Hill how he felt. “I FEEL GREAT BABY,” Hill yelled. “Go...
No injury reports have been confirmed, but Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill has been widely criticized for “not trying” during a Pro Bowl race.  Before racing against Micah Parsons, Nick Chubb, and Trevon Diggs in the Pro Bowl, Tyreek Hill declared that he is “the fastest man on Earth.” To everyone’s surprise, Hill placed fourth in the race, with Parsons taking the title. Onlookers were amused to see Parsons win the race and Hill come in last, but Parsons didn’t feel like that moment undermined Hill’s claim to fame. "I do want a Madden 95-speed though." A Black man filed a lawsuit against the Denver Police Department on Thursday, alleging he was harassed and racially discriminated against by police officers when he called for help during a minor vehicle crash. First reported by The Denver Post, Keilon Hill is suing Corporal Bart Stark, Officer Thomas Ludwig, Officer Gary Yampolsky, and the City and County of Denver for punitive damages. In the lawsuit, Hill alleges the officers made nasty comments—including calling him a “turd”—and attempted to violate as many of his constitutional rights “as possible in a single encounter” during the traffic accident in April 2020. Hill said that the officers unlawfully searched his vehicle, unlawfully arrested him after Hill questioned that search, used force against him, and retaliated against him by fabricating charges. “Denver has a long history of retaliating against citizens who criticize their police officers,” Hill’s lawyer, Benjamin DeGolia, told The Daily Beast. “We saw that in the summer of 2020 during the George Floyd protests in Denver, when the police department responded with extreme violence against its citizens. We’ve seen time and time...

ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel gave his take on who President Biden should nominate to fill the upcoming opening on the U.S. Supreme Court, crudely joking Wednesday that it should be Anita Hill.  The liberal comedian made the suggestion during the opening monologue of his show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in a clear jab at Justice Clarence Thomas, who was accused by Hill during his 1991 confirmation process of having sexually harassed her. The joke came while Kimmel was discussing Justice Stephen Breyer's expected retirement announcement and Biden's promise to nominate a Black woman to the nation's highest court.  LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 06: Dr. Anita Hill attends Vanity Fair and Lancôme Toast Women in Hollywood on February 06, 2020 in Los Angeles, California. ___ Jimmy Kimmel on the set of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" NFL Films released a video clip that reveals the genius behind the Kansas City Chiefs’ comeback win: tight end Travis Kelce.  As a team, the Chiefs are often lauded for their unparalleled physical abilities. Patrick Mahomes makes magic happen, Tyreek Hill earns his “Cheetah” nickname time and time again, and Travis Kelce seems to be able to secure any slant or sideline catch thrown his way. But the dynamic tight end turns out to be far more than meets the eye — or, at least, what a tight end is supposed to be. Patrick Mahomes revealed that the 25-yard gain to Travis Kelce late in the fourth quarter was ad-libbed. Kelce saw something in the defense on the play before. Getty Timmy Hill will return to MBM Motorsports at Daytona. MBM Motorsports will compete in the season-opening NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway but will do so after a significant change. The team will use a Chevrolet Camaro instead of a Toyota Supra or a Ford Mustang. Team owner Carl Long made the announcement during an appearance on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. He confirmed that Timmy Hill will control the No. 66 for the Xfinity Series race and then dropped the news about the OEM change. Long’s explanation is that his team has struggled to contend with Chevrolet over the years. A devout Maryland bakery truck driver answered the prayers of hundreds of starving drivers by handing out loaves of bread to those trapped on a snow-clogged Virginia highway. In a now-viral video, Ron Hill, 60, can be seen gingerly walking over the ice-covered roadway to deliver bread from his Schmidt Baking Company truck early Tuesday morning - after Monday's crippling snowstorm turned a 50-mile stretch of I-95 between Washington, DC and Richmond, Virginia, into a parking lot for more than 24 hours.  Hill, of Harford County near Baltimore, was moved to hand over some 500 packages of Potato Rolls and Old Tyme split-top wheat bread after getting a knock on his driver's door from another trapped motorist.      'I was weeping and didn't understand why. I was thinking, ''Should I go in the back of this truck, start handing out bread, and catch the weight later?'' Hill told Baltimore Magazine.  'As I was sitting at the steering wheel thinking about it, I saw a lady walk up to the side of my truck.'  That lady was Casey Holihan, 23, who was stranded with...

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Michigan defensive back Dax Hill was with the team Saturday and going through early warmups for the Orange Bowl against No. 3 Georgia. Hill did not join the team in South Florida until Thursday. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday that Michigan’s second-leading tackler had not been with the team throughout the week of preparation for the College Football Playoff semifinal, but declined to give a reason why. Harbaugh said Hill was questionable to play against Georgia. “He’s working through something right now,” Harbaugh said. Hill was on the field in a T-shirt, going through light drills with the other defensive backs more than an hour before kickoff, when only specialists are on the field in pads. ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25.
