For most of the 114 years since the American pitbull terrier was first recognized by the United Kennel Club, the breed was rightly seen as the perfect “nanny dog” for children because of its friendly nature, loyalty and stability. As the ASPCA notes, the pitbulls were “once considered especially non-aggressive to people.” Today, as any owner of a “pitbull-type” dog* can attest, parents often recoil in horror when they spot one of these animals, pulling their children close as if to protect them from a marauding werewolf. Fanciful myths about the breed abound, and some public officials have compared their bites to those of sharks and tigers. Since the 1980s, the media have falsely portrayed the pitbull as a bloodthirsty monster, inherently more dangerous than other strong breeds of dog. There is absolutely no factual basis for that narrative, but it's led to a vicious cycle in which people who want a badass dog to fight, or to guard property, or to intimidate rival gangs tend to choose pitbulls (or Rottweilers, another much-maligned breed). Pitbulls...
THERE is an exact number of cookies that must be eaten in a lifetime to be considered an expert, but at the very least, people can identify what makes their favorite cookie the perfect treat. Some respondents have eaten so many cookies throughout their lifetime that they claim to be “cookie experts” (41 percent), estimating that someone should eat about 319 cookies in their life to be considered one. 2To be considered a 'cookie expert' you need to eat about 319 cookies in your lifetimeCredit: Getty 262 percent of Americans agree that it’s hard to beat the taste of a classic chocolate chip cookieCredit: Getty Four in 10 Americans have also claimed to be confident enough in their cookie-baking skills that they would drop their jobs to become a baker, according to new research. THE MOON has caves that could offer humans an unsuspecting spot to establish a permanent lunar base. The pits could shelter space travelers from the extreme conditions of the Moon and outer space. 1The Moon is 240,000 miles from EarthCredit: Getty Images - Getty The challenges for establishing a lunar colony are many: ferrying supplies, landing safely, and living with next-to-no atmosphere are on the short list of tests for astronauts. But once on the Moon, humans will have to deal with both intensely cold temperatures and blistering heat. The pits in the Mare Tranquillitatis region may offer a unique refuge where heat is trapped and the resulting climate is ideal. "Humans evolved living in caves, and to caves we might return when we live on the Moon," planetary scientist David Paige said in a University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) press release. If an unlimited amount of money sounds appealing to you, a new study suggests you may be in the minority. Researchers have surveyed more than 7,000 people living in countries around the world, including the UK, the US, China, France, India and Australia. They found that the majority of people don't want any more than £8.2 million ($10 million) to live an 'absolutely ideal life'.  Results suggest 'unlimited wants' – an economic principle that people want an unlimited amount of money and possessions – is untrue.  Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is currently the world's richest person, with a net worth of $216 billion (£176 billion).  But most people would ideally like far less than this over a lifetime, possibly because they think that such a colossal amount is too greedy.  Most people don't want to be billionaires and consider £8 million the ideal amount of money for an 'absolutely ideal life', the study shows (file photo) UNLIMITED WANTS: A PRIMER'Unlimited wants' is an economic principle that people want an unlimited amount of money, possessions and services.  The long-held economic...

Over the last five weeks of the 2021 season, the Ravens relied on Kevon Seymour, Robert Jackson, Daryl Worley and Chris Westry to play significant snaps at cornerback. This was not the plan for a franchise that has invested so much cap space in its secondary in recent seasons, one that was turning away qualified cornerbacks in training camp. It was a familiar nightmare for coach John Harbaugh, who has navigated many a December and January with starting defensive backs in the injury ward. But this time, the Ravens could not find a workable solution; they finished last in the league in pass defense and tied for 29th in turnovers forced. Better luck alone would promise better performance in 2022. The Ravens played all of last season without their top ballhawk, Marcus Peters. They played the last five games without Marlon Humphrey, their other former All-Pro cornerback. Both expect to be 100% by September. On top of those anticipated returns, they fortified their back line by signing Marcus Williams, one of best cover safeties in the sport. The Ravens have...
Cheryl Strayed, 53, is the author of four books, including her bestselling memoir, Wild — about her 1,100-mile solo trek along the Pacific Crest Trail — which was turned into a movie starring Reese Witherspoon. Cheryl lives in Portland, Oregon, with husband Brian and their children, Carver, 17, and Bobbi, 16. I’ve always joked that I’ll say the thing sober that other people will only say after a couple of glasses of wine. Even as a child this was true.  When I was young, my mother’s friends, a married couple, came to the house. I cornered the husband and asked him: ‘What made you love your wife?’ I don’t think he’d ever asked the question of himself, let alone been asked it by an eight-year-old girl.  Author Cheryl Strayed, 53, (pictured) says don't be afraid to show weakness. SANTA CLARA — There are two things I know to be true in the NFL. The first in that intra-division games show who teams really are. The second is that truly good teams bounce back from embarrassing losses with emphatic wins. With that said, it might be time to reevaluate the San Francisco 49ers. Who saw that coming a week ago? The Niners’ 31-10 manhandling of the Rams — a fifth-straight win over Los Angeles — was unexpected. Let’s not pretend anyone saw that coming. But it was also comprehensive. Undeniable, even. There was no luck involved in that win. It was just one team beating the snot out of the other. An 18-play drive for the first Niners touchdown of the game set the tone. As Jimmy Garoppolo joked after the contest, it took the Rams’ soul. And while Monday’s performance is probably not a sign of things to come for the 49ers — this is not some juggernaut that awoke from its slumber — the win, the Niners’ fourth of the...
Batman was there. Spider-Man, too. You could see both of the costumed crusaders hanging out in the same vicinity of a herd of cows, a group of astronauts, a land shark and at least one Mario brother. And where was Waldo? He could also be found grooving about in the area — along with some 70,000 other music lovers — as Outside Lands finally returned to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Friday (Oct. 29). It was the Halloween weekend edition of the popular three-day festival, a fact that was underscored by all the colorful and elaborate outfits that could be seen throughout the grounds. Expect the number of superheroes, pirates and other costumed revelers to only grow as the weekend progresses, culminating, of course, with Day Three on Halloween itself. We may never see another Halloween Outside Lands, given that the festival usually takes place in August and was only moved to October due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. (The festival wasn’t held in 2020 for the same reason.) Yet, everyone seemed to agree that the event...
PEOPLE are increasingly looking for employers who give back to their communities and have a positive impact on society, as well as offering workplace progression and opportunities. This makes Tesco an ideal starting point for a great career, especially if you consider the scale and breadth of the national community programmes it runs. 4 Last year alone, with many families facing hardship due to the pandemic, the retailer put together a £30million package of support for communities in the UK. It donated £15million worth of food and funds for distribution through partners The Trussell Trust and FareShare, in addition to ongoing monthly donations of 2.5 million meals a month from surplus food. Plus, it supported more than 10,000 local community groups with £8million worth of grants through its Community Grants Scheme (formerly Bags of Help) programme, and donated £2million to the British Red Cross to help them support people in need during the pandemic. Serving local communities is part of the supermarket’s DNA. It is at the very heart of Tesco’s own story, which began with a market stall in...

There are many eye-catching storylines surrounding the new-look Giants entering 2021. For this reason, the Giants might be the perfect team to be featured on this year’s “Hard Knocks.” There are specific criteria to meet in order for a team to be featured on “Hard Knocks.” Per The Swing of Things, the criteria are that no teams who were in the playoffs in the last two seasons, no teams with a first-year head coach, no teams which have been featured on “Hard Knocks” in the last 10 years will be eligible for “Hard Knocks.” The five teams meeting that criteria in 2021 are the New York Giants, the Denver Broncos, the Dallas Cowboys, the Carolina...
The Rangers might be the perfect remedy for the Islanders to get out of their funk Rob Taub April 29, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditComing off three bad outings in a row against the Capitals, the Islanders are looking for something to spark them again with the season coming up on its final week followed by the postseason. The next two games — a home and home with the rival Rangers — could be exactly what they need. Make no mistake, these next two contests are critical for both squads. The Islanders are trying to secure a playoff spot, fend off the streaking Bruins who are just a point behind them for third in the East, and still have a slim shot at winning the division. The Rangers still have hopes of sneaking into that fourth spot and taking all four points from the Isles could really make things interesting heading into next week. So these games are going to have a playoff mentality. That could play in the Isles’ favor. Just last Tuesday...

Yankees news/rumors: Tomoyuki Sugano to the Bronx? Corey Kluber could be the perfect fit, Tanaka the safe route By: Alexander Wilson December 8, 2020 ShareTweetFlipRedditMoney, money, money that is what the New York Yankees are focusing on this off-season. With the winter meetings underway, reports have confirmed that the Yankees are prioritizing the signing of DJ LeMahieu, as most predicted months ago. When the season ended, LeMahieu and a possible extension were already in the works, but both sides have hit a snag as DJ desires a five-year deal, and the Yankees want to keep it at four years if possible. They’re already on the hook for multiple long-term contracts, and adding a 32-year-old to that algorithm doesn’t conjure good results. However, LeMahieu is as safe as it gets regarding a big investment, considering his dominance the past two seasons and ability to play multiple positions in the infield. Aside from DJ, the Yankees desperately need starting pitching and will be looking around the league for valuable assets. One player who...

By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The NASCAR championship was in clear reach when Denny Hamlin made his final pit stop in last year's title-deciding finale. With everything on the line, his crew chief went with an aggressive adjustment aimed at gaining one last burst of speed. Chris Gabehart called for a large, thick patch of tape across the front right side of the No. 11 Toyota. It was a gamble Gabehart was willing to take, believing “you’ve got to dance with the fire to beat these guys.” He got burned. The aerodynamic adjustment backfired, Hamlin had to pit again to avoid overheating his engine, and his title chances were over. As Gabehart leads Hamlin back into the championship race Sunday, the crew chief has no fear of overthinking his team out of title contention. “You've certainly got to learn from your mistakes and your successes, right? That’s part of getting better,” he said. “I’m not concerned of making those same issues again. For better or worse, we’re going to put our best foot forward,...
