The office of New York State Attorney General Letitia James has been conducting a civil investigation of the Trump Organization’s finances, and former President Trump was expected to submit to a deposition on Wednesday, August 10. But according to NBC News’ Vaughn Hillyard, Trump has decided to take the Fifth Amendment. NBC News’ Vaughn Hillyard tweeted an official statement from Trump, who angrily railed against James while explaining his reasons for taking the Fifth. “Attorney General Letitia James openly campaigned on the policy of ‘Get and Destroy Trump,’” the former president wrote. “This political attack on me, my family and my great company is her despicable attempt to fulfill that cynical, and very corrupt promise. James developed a political platform and made a career out of maliciously attacking me and my business before she was even elected.” READ MORE: 'A bold step': George Conway explains why Trump 'should be worried' following Mar-a-Lago FBI search On August 10 at 10:16 AM eastern time, Politico’s Kyle Cheney tweeted, “JUST IN: Trump says he has pleaded the Fifth in his deposition with...
Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton revealed he agonizingly had to give up the chance to star alongside Tom Cruise in the Top Gun: Maverick film.  Hamilton, 37, has enjoyed minor forays into Hollywood in the past, making a cameo in Zoolander 2 and lending his voice to Cars 2 and Cars 3 but he almost landed his dream role.  The Brit was a fan of the original Top Gun film as a child, which made him 'fixated' on being a fighter pilot.  Although he ended up on the track rather than in the skies, Hamilton revealed he almost had the chance to live out his dream on the big screen.  In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hamilton said he begged his friend Tom Cruise to let him have a role in the Top Gun sequel.  'Basically I'm a friend of Tom,' Hamilton said before adding, 'Cruise.' 'One of the nicest people you'll ever meet. He invited me to his set years ago when he was doing Edge of Tomorrow and then we just built a friendship over time.'  Formula One...

Following weeks of speculation, The View officially named Alyssa Farah Griffin as Meghan McCain’s permanent successor in the conservative seat. The 25-year-old daytime talk show on ABC also named Ana Navarro as a permanent co-host. Co-host Whoopi Goldberg made the announcements on Thursday’s show. Griffin and Navarro had separate montages. Griffin, who was the White House communications director in the Trump administration, made 29 appearances as a guest co-host during the show’s 25th season. Navarro, an anti-Trump Republican, made numerous appearances since McCain left the show. She will remain a CNN contributor and only be on The View “a few days a week,” according to The Daily Mail, citing sources. Following her montage of some of her moments as guest co-host, Griffin walked onto the set and took her spot in the permanent conservative seat. “If anyone had ever told me I would be sitting at a table with Whoopi Goldberg, I would have said, you are crazy,” she said. “It is such an honor to be with you ladies every day on this set, and it’s particularly exciting for...

Highland Park, Illinois (CNN)New details have emerged describing a scene filled with fear and chaos as a 21-year-old gunman opened fire during a Fourth of July parade in a Chicago suburb, where seven people were killed and dozens of others wounded. Concealed on a rooftop, the shooter opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle on paradegoers Monday along Highland Park's Central Avenue. "The noise was bouncing off the buildings. People were pointing in different directions," Jogmen told CNN on Thursday in an interview. What we know about the Highland Park shootingIn the panicked aftermath, authorities spent nearly eight hours hunting for the shooter, fearing he would resume his killing spree, Jogmen said."Was it a pause, was it a break?" Ex-ESPN host Cari Champion has said executives made it clear 'she did not matter' as a black woman during her three-year stint at the network. The 47-year-old moderated the show First Take with Skip Bayless and Stephan A. Smith between 2012 to 2105 on the sports channel.  The broadcaster shared her experience revealing details about her departure from the sports network during Monday's episode: I Am Athlete. Champion suspected the network wanted to hire a 'blonde' woman not a brown-skinned black girl, but once she got the job she was elated. But she blasted the allegedly toxic management style she experienced during a time when a black woman hosting a weekly daytime show was rare. She said the network was just like, 'Just be happy that you're here. Ask questions. Don't talk.'  Champion served as a moderator on the sports program, First Take, from 2012-2015 alongside Skip Bayless and Stephan A. Smith. Amy Schumer has admitted that she fired actor Penn Badgley's wife Domino Kirke as her doula shortly after giving birth, because she felt insecure having a 'goddess floating around her home' while she recovered from her C-section.  The 41-year-old comedian made the confession to Kirke's husband while appearing on his podcast, Podcrushed, in which she explained to the You star, 35, that she felt 'so vulnerable' in the wake of her son's birth, she didn't have the 'strength' to have Kirke, 38, continue working with her.  Schumer - who revealed earlier this year that she had undergone liposuction in a bid to boost her confidence - described Kirke as a 'family member', having hired her during her pregnancy in order to help her through the labor and delivery process.  However, following the birth of her son Gene, now three, in May 2019, something changed.   ‘The truth was, and this is pretty unfair to [Domino], after I had Gene, I was recovering from a C-section,' she told Badgley.  'Domino is like a goddess. London (CNN Business)Russia's increasingly aggressive actions against its European gas customers are taking a toll. The country's natural gas exports have tumbled by more than a quarter since January. But surging prices have kept Russia's coffers bulging as it continues to cut off deliveries.Moscow's gas exports to countries outside of its Commonwealth of Independent States, which includes 11 countries in Central Asia and Eastern Europe, fell nearly 28% in the first five months of 2022, Russian state energy giant Gazprom (GZPFY) said on Wednesday. So far, Gazprom has cut off at least 20 billion cubic meters of its annual gas supplies to customers in six European countries — Poland, Bulgaria, Finland, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands — because they failed to make payments in rubles, a demand President Vladimir Putin made back in March. That amounts to nearly 13% of the European Union's total annual gas imports from Russia, according to data from the International Energy Agency. But James Huckstepp, head of EMEA gas analytics at S&P Global Commodity Insights, told CNN Business that gas prices have risen to an...

Adam Engel dived trying to catch Emmanuel Rivera’s slicing liner in the sixth inning Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium. The Chicago White Sox right fielder came up empty and slipped slightly as he got back to his feet. MJ Melendez scored from first as Rivera raced to third for an RBI triple. The hit against reliever Reynaldo López gave the Kansas City Royals the lead. The Royals scored twice in the sixth and Melendez added a two-run homer off Ryan Burr in the eighth as they beat the Sox 6-2 in front of 13,504. “I told (Engel) when he came in, don’t ever lose your aggressiveness,” Sox manager Tony La Russa said. “A couple plays (shortstop) Timmy (Anderson) made, the double play (first baseman José) Abreu made, (second baseman) Leury (García) made some good plays. “You can’t be trying defensively and not trying offensively. President Joe Biden's brother, James, has officially been dragged into the family's Chinese payments scandal thanks to newly-obtained banking records as it is also revealed that more than 150 transactions he and first son Hunter Biden made were flagged as 'concerning' by US regulators. The bank records, obtained by CBS News, show that James Biden's company, the Lion Hall Group, received payments from a Chinese-financed consulting group in 2018 before his brother, Joe Biden, announced his run for the presidency. That year, CBS News reports, both James and Hunter received monthly retainers from the consulting firm totaling $100,000 to $165,000 for the first son and $65,000 to James.  The documents were obtained by Sen. Chuck Grassley, the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, who spent three years digging into James and Hunter's business dealings, which he called 'very concerning.' He said his team obtained the records directly from the bank where the consulting firm did business.  'We have people with the Biden name, dealing with Chinese business people that have a relationship to the Communist Party,' Grassley told CBS.  'I...
New York (CNN Business)Elon Musk has gotten a lot of attention from buying a 9.2% stake in Twitter, along with landing a seat on the company's board. He's also worth an additional $1 billion. In a new filing late Tuesday, Musk disclosed how much he paid for the 73 million shares he started purchasing in late January and completed with a final buy Friday. The average price was $36.16 per share. The news of his Twitter investment sent shares up 27% Monday, and another 2% by Tuesday's close, before slipping slightly in Wednesday trading. But even with that step back in price, Musk is looking at an on-paper profit of roughly $1.1 billion on his $2.6 billion investment. That equates to a return of about 40%. Not bad for a two-month investment.Of course, that amount is essentially sofa cushion change for the world's richest human being. (CNN)Germany has announced that it will buy 35 US-made F-35A fighter jets, the first major arms purchase to be publicly confirmed since Chancellor Olaf Scholz committed to ramping up his country's defense spending in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The German government has made these decisions alongside a choice to become more active in European defenses. Scholz has also taken dramatic steps to limit Germany's economic ties to Russia, including halting the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The F-35s will replace Germany's aging fleet of Tornados, the only planes in the Luftwaffe's inventory capable of carrying US nuclear bombs that are stored in the country in case of war breaking out in Europe. The decision to buy F-35s is significant as it will make Germany's air force more compatible with the rest of NATO and other European defense partners who either operate or intend to purchase F-35s. The US Defense Department said earlier this year that US Air Force F-35As in Europe would be certified to deploy the nuclear bombs before 2023. Read MoreThe F-35 comes in...

Players of the hugely popular online game Wordle have been left furious after complaining the game has become 'too difficult' after it moved to the New York Times (NYT).  Fans have noticed several problems with the game's transition from its original website to NYT's website, with many arguing the words have become more obscure and therefore harder to guess.   Wordle, which only offers one puzzle per day to keep fans hooked, has amassed millions of players since it came online last October.  It was created by Wales-born software engineer Josh Wardle for his girlfriend Palak Shah who loves word puzzles. At the beginning of November, the simple game – which involves guessing a five-letter word in six tries – had only 90 players; now there are said to be 3 million.   Due to its barnstorming success, Wardle sold his creation to the NYT at the end of January for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.  However since the transition, many social media users have been arguing that the game has suddenly become more difficult. Examples of words before the transition included, those, drink,...
By the end of the epic Lord Of The Rings trilogy, the elves had returned to their woodland realms, the dwarves to their underground halls and that accursed ring finally consigned to the fires of Mount Doom. Well, according to the Daily Beast, Ellicott was a close buddy to Joel Greenberg, the former Republican operative and best party buddy of Rep. Matt Gaetz. He worked for Greenberg at the Seminole County Tax Collector’s office.  In the last week of January, Ellicott pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud as well as distribution of a controlled substance. Ellicott’s main function in the case is that he told investigators he had handled cash bribes for Greenberg, acting as a middleman for criminal corruption. He also said he illegally sold Adderall. But Ellicott reportedly has one small part to play in Gaetz’s life: He says he was in the room when Gaetz was informed that he had had sex with an underage girl. In April of last year, the Daily Beast reported on a “confession letter” purportedly written by Greenberg to amazing dirtbag Roger Stone towards the end of...
John McCain knew he was taking a gamble when he picked a relatively unknown governor from Alaska to be his 2008 running mate, according to a new book that claims he said, 'F*** it. Let's do it,' when he plumped for Sarah Palin. To emphasize the point he mimed making a dice roll in a conversation with a top campaign strategist. At the time, the decision was dressed up as a bold choice that would excite the Religious Right.  In hindsight, the choice of a gun-toting controversialist from Alaska with little experience on the national scene was an act of political desperation that turned a four-point lead for the Arizona senator into a seven-point defeat.  McCain knew it was a risk but went for it anyway, according to a new account told by New York Times political reporter Jeremy Peters in his forthcoming book, 'Insurgency: How Republicans Lost Their Party and Got Everything They Ever Wanted.' The conversation took place in August 2008 on McCain's ranch, according to Axios, which published extracts and confirmed the account.  Sen. John McCain picked...
MIT engineers have developed a new material that is 'stronger than steel and as light as plastic,' according to a new report. Chemical engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a new material that was thought to be impossible, MIT's newsroom reported on Wednesday. 2MIT engineers developed a new robust type of polymer The breakthrough findings were presented in the journal Nature in an article called "Irreversible synthesis of an ultrastrong two-dimensional polymeric material." The scientists used a novel polymerization process to develop the new material, which they said in the study possesses "mechanical strength." The strong material can self-assemble into sheets and is therefore classified as a two-dimensional polymer. Polymers consist of any class of natural or synthetic substances composed of very large molecules (i.e. nylon, polyethylene, polyester, Teflon, wool, silk, and epoxy). Until now, researchers had believed it was impossible for this 2D process to occur in polymers because all other classes can only form one-dimensional noodle-like chains. According to the MIT news report, such a material could not only be used to create...
The massive Build Back Better spending plan, which Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) said last month that he could not support, seems to have stalled, but Biden said on Wednesday that he believes portions of the plan can be passed before the midterm elections. The president also continued to claim that the proposal would help alleviate the rising prices Americans have been facing. Senate Democrats also appear poised to fail in their push to pass so called "voting rights" legislation, as Manchin and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) have indicated that they will not support changing the filibuster rules, a move that other Democrats have been advocating in order to ram the legislation through. In a rather surprising move, the Miami Dolphins fired head coach Brian Flores on Monday morning, ending his tenure with the team after three seasons.  It seemed not that long ago the stars were aligning in Miami as future contenders in the NFL. The Dolphins had a war chest of future assets to build a winning foundation with and appeared to have a solid coach leading the charge in Brian Flores. After three playoff-less seasons, however, things have changed. Specifically, Flores’ employment status has changed. On Monday, the Miami Dolphins added to the scrap heap of fired head coaches by parting ways with Flores. The move comes as somewhat of a surprise and has seemingly reinforced the idea that the Dolphins don’t have any idea what they’re doing. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross released on Monday morning detailing why the decision was made to fire Flores following Sunday’s win. “I made the decision today to part ways with Brian Flores,” Ross wrote. “After evaluating where we are as an organization and what we need going forward to improve, I determined that...

NASCAR driver Brandon Brown - who unintentionally sparked the phrase 'Let's Go Brandon!' -  says the popularity of the phrase has effectively killed his hopes of signing sponsorship deals.  Brown, 28, started the national anti-Biden chant after NBC sports reporter Kelli Stavast confused the crowd jeering 'F*** Joe Biden' for 'Let's Go Brandon!' at a NASCAR event in Alabama on October 2. The pro-racing driver has now spoken out on the effect the chant had on his professional career as he has had a hard time finding sponsors, saying he's viewed as a ticking time bomb despite never expressing any political views, beyond disclosing that he is a Republican. 'It got extremely difficult for us,' Brown told Sports Business Journal. 'If you're a national corporation, that means you sell to all consumers … and unfortunately, when you get dragged into the political arena, people want you to take a side. 'I've never been put in a position where it's, "OK, what side are you on? Left or right?" So it’s hard for a brand to want to attach to somebody...
Tom Holland has hit back at Martin Scorsese after the film director claimed Marvel movies were 'not cinema'. Martin, 79, who is considered one of the most influential directors in film history, expressed his views in a 2019 opinion piece for The New York Times, writing that the flicks lacked 'revelation, mystery or genuine emotional danger' and they were made to meet a 'specific set' of fans' demands. IT can be expensive to decorate a Christmas tree, with decorations, lights and baubles often costing an arm and a leg. However, one mum has come up with a clever way of creating a colourful and entirely unique tree for this festive season - made entirely out of BALLOONS. 1Corinne McEleney showed off her amazing balloon tree and matching candy canes on FacebookCredit: Corinne McEleney Corinne McEleney took to the Family Lowdown Tips & Ideas group on Facebook to share a picture of her amazing tree, which her friend made for her. "This year our tree is made of balloons because nothing about 2021 is 'normal'," Corinne wrote. As well as the tree itself, which was made up of red, green and white balloons, complete with a gold star balloon on the top, she had also made two candy cane balloons which were placed either side of the television. And in contrast to the usual cost of Christmas decorations, the cost of the tree and the candy cane balloons was a modest £40. However,...
