This should be curtain call for the puppet show, right? Joe Manchin did exactly what we all thought he was going to do. Hell, it’s something he’s historically been doing: denying the very real climate crisis that will only get worse because of his failures. That doesn’t mean any semblance of progress must stall out because the senator from West Virginia needs just a little more time to sit on his hands and contemplate gas prices or other disingenuous shit. As news was breaking that Manchin wanted nothing to do with a spending package if it included addressing climate change, the Biden administration was announcing a $56 million funding initiative to increase domestic production of solar panels, jump-start Energy Department projects, and even weigh the benefits of integrating photovoltaic (PV) technology with electric vehicles. According to an Energy Department press release, $29 million is being devoted to PV research and development funding, of which $10 million will be used to “support projects that increase the reuse and recycling of solar technologies.” A further $27 million will be devoted to developing new...

SACRAMENTO —  Besides governor, there’s no office in California government more powerful than Assembly speaker. That’s why competition for the job can be fierce. And is now. There’s a bruising speakership fight being waged mostly out of public view between current Speaker Anthony Rendon of Lakewood and Assemblyman Robert Rivas from Hollister in San Benito County. The challenger seems to have the upper hand. But Rendon still has the office, and the outcome is unclear. The bitter brawl is among Democrats who hold a supermajority of the 80 seats. They’ll control 60 after two vacancies are filled in Tuesday’s primary. A simple majority vote, 41, is needed to elect a speaker. Rendon, 54, has been speaker six years. That’s longer than anyone since Willie Brown, who held onto the job for 14 and a half years until a brief Republican takeover and looming term limits forced him out in 1995. Then he was elected San Francisco mayor. Rivas, 42, was elected to the Assembly in 2018 and would be the first Northern California speaker in 24 years. Seven of the last...

Makes total sense. Yes, I’m being serious. That’s why I'm not even concerned about the WHO stealing our national sovereignty, for we sadly have no more national sovereignty to give. Like I just got done saying above, we are leading the charge on this. So we aren’t being robbed against our will. We aren’t victims. We are literally asking to be violated. And our own institutions – legal, educational, artistic, theistic – have been led by such sadomasochists for quite some time. After all, most of them played the role of the dutiful submissive when their statist masters demanded they assume the position. I’m far more worried about us than I am the WHO. Do we know what time it is? Whether or not COVID was as scary as first advertised or the bad flu it turned out to be, do you think anyone other than Americans should be able to define health threats and their remedies for us? Because the vote coming up May 22-28 will ratify what so many of us seemed to want during COVID. We will...
Like many coastal communities around the world, people living by the sea in the United Kingdom have harvested and consumed seaweed for centuries. In Wales, Welsh laverbread — made from cooking a type of seaweed called laver — is a culinary delicacy so revered that it enjoys Protected Designation of Origin status. Seaweed's uses do not end at the dinner table, either: Today, it's found in everything from cosmetics and animal feed to gardening products and packaging. With concerns about the environment, food security and climate change mounting, this wet, edible treasure of the sea — of which there are many varieties and colors — could have a major role to play in the sustainable future of our planet, and the U.K. wants in on the act.   Toward the end of April, a project dubbed the U.K.'s "first dedicated seaweed industry facility" celebrated its official opening, with those involved hoping it will help kickstart the commercialization of a sector that's well established in other parts of the world. The Seaweed Academy, as it's known, is located near the Scottish...

Pelosi’s delegation consisted entirely of Congressional Democrats. It consisted of Reps. Jason Crow of Colorado, Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, Gregory Meeks from New York, and Adam Schiff from California. The delegation’s trip marks the second major visit made by American officials to Ukraine in the month of April. Earlier this month U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with Zelenskyy to discuss U.S. aid to Ukraine. In their meeting, the diplomats told Zelenskyy that the U.S. was prepared to provide Ukraine with $300 million in military financing and had also approved a $165 million sale of ammunition, that was not made in the U.S., that would be compatible with Ukraine’s Soviet-era weaponry. The U.S. and many of its European allies pledge to send shipments of defensive munitions to Ukraine to aid the country in warding off future Russian advances into the country. Much like the surprise visits by the American delegations, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson held a meeting with Zelenskyy earlier this month where the two men discussed European sanctions on...

It's hard enough to get a bill passed in one chamber of Congress but somehow more complicated when two similar, but not identical, bills pass in the House and Senate, necessitating the reconciliation process. That's what's happening now with two bills promising a host of benefits to the public. The House's America COMPETES Act and the Senate's U.S. Innovation and Competition Act, known together as the Bipartisan Innovation Act, hope to fix supply chain problems by strengthening the domestic semiconductor chip industry and tackling a myriad of other issues. But the two versions won't be wed without blood, according to Senate Republicans. On the one hand, Republicans tend to support the $52 billion investment in the chip industry. It originated in the GOP, with Texas Sen. John Cornyn and Rep. Mike McCaul introducing the chip provision as its own bill in their respective chambers. Shortages of these chips underlie more significant supply problems such as delays in cars and computers, and almost complete reliance on importing the "brains" of our technology from Taiwan and Japan potentially poses a...

To get it in your inbox every week, sign up for free here.Hip-hop took center stage during a glorious and historic Super Bowl halftime show last Sunday, yet the lineup felt at least a little bit strange, given that the NFL is in the thick of another controversy over race and racism.During the show, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar put on a dynamic spectacle that reminded audiences that hip-hop and its apostles have always grappled with questions of race and power. For instance, Eminem ended his 2002 anthem "Lose Yourself" by taking a knee -- a clear reproduction of Colin Kaepernick's protest against anti-Black police brutality. And Dr. Dre reiterated that he's "still not lovin' police."Yet the performance arrived at a moment when the NFL is being forced to examine racial hierarchies within its own orbit. The world's plastic pollution threat constitutes a 'planetary emergency' that's equal to climate change and biodiversity loss, a new report warns.  The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) has urged nations globally to agree to a UN treaty so they're committed to legally binding targets to combat plastic waste.   Plastic pollution directly undermines our health, drives biodiversity loss, exacerbates climate change and risks 'large-scale harmful environmental changes', the EIA says.  Plastic is found in the deepest parts of the ocean, on the highest mountain peaks, in human organs and on remote and uninhabited islands.   Dedicated multilateral agreements to tackle biodiversity loss and climate change have been in place for nearly 30 years, the agency said. However, no equivalent currently exists to tackle plastic pollution, which it calls 'one of the most prevalent and destructive environmental pollutants in existence'.   The predicted rise in plastic pollution spilling into the environment constitutes a planetary emergency, the report warns. And Arum, 90, told Sky: "That is up to Tyson. We have discussed other opponents. "And if the fight is a week or two later [than March 26], it's not the end of the world." Arum also told Whyte to 'quite screwing around' and agree a fight deal with Fury. Kambosos, 28, won the WBA belt, along with the WBO, IBF and WBC 'Franchise' straps in a shock upset over Teofimo Lopez, 24, in November. The Australian became a sensation overnight following the win and is now in a position to call the shots. Devin Haney, 23, who has the full WBC title, has called for an undisputed title decider. But Vasilily Lomachenko, 33, and Ryan Garcia, 23, are among the other names to also challenge newly-crowned unified king Kambosos. And the man himself admitted all the main players at...
President Biden admitted Friday that the coronavirus pandemic is 'not here to stay' but the virus itself is 'probably here to stay.'  'Covid -- as we're dealing with it now -- is not here to stay,' Biden told reporters Friday from the White House. 'Having Covid in the environment here and in the world is probably here to stay.' The president's admission comes after several of his former health advisors have come out and urged the White House to adopt a strategy of treating Covid-19 as the 'new normal.'  Biden ran on a campaign promising to 'defeat the virus,' and just last summer promised July 4th would mark the U.S.' independence from Covid.  Just in the last two weeks, Covid-19 cases have risen 227% for an average of 610,989 by Thursday. The nation reported over 1 million cases on Monday. At the same time, hospitalizations have risen 65% in the last two weeks and deaths have risen 2% to an average of 1,404 per day.  On Thursday, the US recorded 786,824 new infections, an increase from the prior day and...

Jake Paul has publicly offered Jorge Masvidal $5million plus a percentage of PPV sales to fight him next: “Let’s make it happen. That’s the most you’ll ever have gotten paid. A trial for a nasal spray that has prevented cancer patients getting Covid-19 could be a new weapon to fight the pandemic. Some 175 patients have tested the drug by taking daily doses of a nasal spray containing cancer drug interferon developed by scientists at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Royal Melbourne Hospital.  None of the participants in the C-SMART trial have contracted Covid so far, despite several waves of the virus plunging Melbourne into six lockdowns. Scientists are seeking more volunteers to take part in the free trial, which will be expanded to Austin and St Vincent's hospitals in Melbourne, along with Westmead Hospital in western Sydney. A trial for an Australian developed nasal spray that has prevented cancer patients from getting Covid-19 will be expanded across Melbourne and into Sydney (stock image) Anyone with a past or current cancer diagnosis is eligible to take part in the four month trial.  Scientists hope the nasal spray will be an extra protection for vulnerable patients until better preventions are developed. 'We have not had any patient on the trial actually...

Getty Colby Covington punches Kamaru Usman at UFC 268 in November 2021. Top-ranked contender Colby Covington promises to change the trajectory of a rising star’s career should they fight in the UFC. Covington last stepped inside the Octagon when he challenged for the welterweight belt at UFC 268 in November 2021. It was his second time fighting the 170-pound champion, Kamaru Usman, and although Covington had his moments during the match, he ultimately fell short to “The Nigerian Nightmare” once again. Usman retained his belt via unanimous decision. Although “Chaos” has suffered two defeats to Usman, his stock remains very high in the welterweight division as he is still the No. 1 ranked contender. So, who is next for Covington? Well, if it’s rising contender Khamzat Chimaev, Covington plans to derail the hype train. The two combatants have both expressed interest in fighting each other and they also have a history of taking shots at each other online and through the media. GettyKhamzat Chimaev & Colby Covington Chaos recently spoke with Submission Radio about Chimaev, questioning...
Tommy Fury may have been ruled out of his grudge match with fierce rival Jake Paul, with reports today suggesting he has withdrawn. The two fighters, who have been embroiled in a grizzly war of words in the months leading up to their showdown, were set to scrap a week on Saturday. However, it has now emerged that the bout is in serious doubt, with claims on social media surfacing about Fury potentially being forced to drop out. It has also been reported that Tyron Woodley, another of Paul's foes, may fill in instead for a potential rematch. Woodley, a former UFC welterweight champion, suffered a split decision loss to the youngest Paul sibling in their tussle in August.  The reason for Fury's rumoured withdrawal is not yet known and there has been no official confirmation despite the uncertainty. When COP26, the big global climate change summit, wrapped up a few weeks ago, it threw another spotlight on the gap between goals and action. Other than the United Kingdom, no wealthy country has even come close to the goals set out five years ago in the Paris Accords. And despite recent policy ideas floated by the Biden Administration, it’s hard to be optimistic about the United States meeting its climate targets because so much would have to change. For cities in particular, transportation offers the most intractable climate action challenge. The transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse gases in Minnesota, and the fastest growing slice to the pollution pie. Because transportation depends on long-term massive infrastructure and the individual actions of millions of people, it’s hard to change quickly. But to meaningfully reduce carbon pollution, urban transportation has to pivot fast. During the COP26 conference, a group of cities called C40 Cities pushed collectively for climate action in cities around the world. In one high-profile report, the group declared that, “public transport usage must double in global...
Teofimo Lopez and Brandon Figueroa dropped close losses in their boxing bouts along with their titles, but they should hold their heads high in defeat.  Long before a single loss was toxic to a boxer’s career, it simply meant that the other guy had a better night during the no-decision era of boxing. Times have changed, and the public is much more critical of a fighter’s performance, but Teofimo Lopez and Brandon Figueroa have nothing to hang their heads about. Both Lopez and Figueroa lost their Saturday, Nov. 27 main events, undefeated records, and titles. That’s a lot of disappointment to take on in a moment after grueling contests. Neither fighter handled their disappointment particularly well, but you can’t blame them for being irritated amid frustration, exhaustion, and anger following a hard-fought performance. Lopez and Figueroa were shocked that they were judged as the losers in their respective matchups.  Each has a logical point to feel those emotions. One judge saw Stephen Fulton vs. Figueroa as an even fight. In Lopez’s case, one judge had him winning the battle 114-113....

Dave Grohls wife and daughters join him at Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, more celeb kids in 2021 Best bank account bonuses for November 2021 All the usual schtick was there: He accused Kamaru Usman of taking performance-enhancing drugs. He said the referee was biased against him. He took a shot at Democrats for rigging an election, blasted Jorge Masvidal for ducking him and on and on. But in the midst of his tirades, Colby Covington made a statement that rings so true yet is largely overlooked. Covington noted that since he faced Usman at UFC 245 in 2019 and lost by a late fifth-round TKO, he left the mega-gym, the American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, and wound up in a gym where the focus is solely on him. Colby Covington Incorporated, he called it. But it’s been a brilliant move for him and one that UFC president Dana White has frequently endorsed in the past. “The one thing boxing has gotten right is the way guys do their training camps,” White told Yahoo Sports...
BOSTON (CBS) – Jennifer Nassour, the former Mass GOP chair, said it would be the “end of the Republican party in Massachusetts” if Geoff Diehl defeats Gov. Charlie Baker in a potential primary election. Nassour joined WBZ-TV political analyst Jon Keller to discuss the state of the Republican party in Massachusetts and other topics. Nassour was critical of current Mass GOP chair Jim Lyons. “You are all one family and you support your family. You see that over and over again with the Democratic party in Massachusetts. Even though they might battle it out and fight, they do support their own,” she said. “Currently, the Lyons Mass GOP is not doing that, is not supporting all of our candidates. There is no reason to fight with the most popular governor in the country.” Baker has not yet announced if he plans to run for another term. Keller @ Large: Part 2

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen speaks as U.S. President Joe Biden holds a meeting with business leaders and CEOs about the debt limit at the White House in Washington, U.S., October 6, 2021.Kevin Lamarque | Reuters Raising the debt limit used to be routine in Washington, but over the years it has become more of a partisan battleground, resulting in perennial crises that threaten to undermine global faith in American markets and thrust the U.S. economy into recession. The nation is weeks away from yet another such predicament. After raising the debt limit with days to spare earlier this month, Congress needs to act again on it before some point in December. And another partisan brawl is brewing over giving the Treasury Department the ability to pay for programs lawmakers have already authorized. Given how predictable and potentially calamitous that gridlock is, it's a wonder Congress hasn't overhauled or removed the borrowing cap altogether. There are ways to do just that, even though it isn't likely before the next deadline. Important players on both sides of the aisle have proposed...
