LOS ANGELES (AP) — Some of the best players in golf were at their best Thursday in the Genesis Invitational, with Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler sharing the early lead. Riviera still managed to hold its own, to no one’s surprise. Even in ideal conditions — very little wind and warm sunshine — Spieth and Scheffler did well to post 5-under 66 on a course with minimal rough and firm greens. British Open champion Collin Morikawa, who has another mathematical shot at reaching No. 1 in the world if he were to win, joined a group that included Justin Thomas at 67. Jon Rahm, the No. 1 player in the world, had another week where he couldn’t seem to make anything. He raised his arms in mock triumph when he made a 4-foot birdie on the par-4 eighth, his 17th hole of the round. It was the second-longest putt he made all day. The longest was on the next hole, when he made a 5-footer for par. Rahm still managed a 69. The tournament now has Tiger Woods as the...
LOS ANGELES (AP) — All the best players in the world are gathered on a course rich in heritage and esteem. And the Masters is still seven weeks away. The Genesis Invitational wraps up the West Coast swing at Riviera with a field so strong that it attracted everyone from the top 10 in the world ranking. It’s the first time in 15 years a regular PGA Tour event has all of the world’s top 10. It even has Tiger Woods, even if he’s at Riviera as the tournament host while recovering from injuries to his right leg from a car crash in Los Angeles nearly a year ago. “It’s sort of turned into a can’t-miss event on the PGA Tour,” said Rory McIlroy, who checks in at No. 5. “All the top 10 are here this week, and I think that speaks volumes for what we all think of this event. It’s one that you don’t want to miss.” Riviera has never looked better, thanks to a recent dry spell in California and a blast of heat during Super...
Diving into this week’s Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club with our PGA Tour expert picks and best bets for the tournament and stacked field. After golf fans were treated to both a loaded field and a great tournament in Phoenix last week, it’s back to California on the PGA Tour with a trip to vaunted Riviera Country Club for the Genesis Invitational. And if you thought last week’s field was stacked, you haven’t seen anything yet as we try to make our PGA Tour expert picks with virtually every big name you could imagine playing this week. Riviera is a difficult test for almost anyone, which is what makes the Genesis Invitational such a treat. Ball-striking from tee-to-green is something that’s a must, but the way greens are situated also makes the short game extremely important as well. In the simplest terms, it takes an all-around performance to win this event. Before we dive into the picks and best bets this week, though, we have to look at an up-and-down slate from me last week. Sam Burns was a...
A cruise ship headed for the Mexican Riviera set sail from the Port of Long Beach on Saturday — the first cruise ship to depart from California in 17 months. The Carnival Panorama is on a seven-day voyage and will stop in the Mexican ports of Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan before returning to Long Beach, Carnival Corp. said in a statement. The 1,060-foot Carnival Panorama debuted in 2019. Passenger Bob Lechtreck said he and his wife were on the inaugural sailing on December 11, 2019. "I can't tell you how excited I am to be on the Panorama for its inaugural return to service," Lechtreck told the Press-Telegram in a text. "It's been way too long since we've sailed, and we couldn't be happier returning to our favorite activity." 8 Royal Caribbean crew members test positive ... 01:19 Battles with CDC over health requirementsThe cruise industry was hard-hit by the pandemic after passengers and crew members tested positive for COVID-19 and some ships were turned away from ports. Buzzzz-o-Meter: Stars Are Buzzing About This At-Home Cycling Bike 2021 tax law changes you need to know © Provided by Golf Channel Golfers can’t agree on anything. Blades or cavity back. Overlap or interlock. Tiger or Phil. Distance or rollback. If you spend any time online following golfers, you’ll quickly realize that one’s particular way of speaking on the game (“Golfing isn’t a word!”) can produce such hatred in other golf fans you’d think someone’s grandmother was just told to fix her own tire or open her own door. One thing we can agree on is Riviera Country Club. Every golf fan loves Riviera. How can you not? Riviera, in the modern age, is perfect. It isn’t an overly long golf course, but it still beats up the best in the world every year. It isn’t majestic, in the traditional sense, lacking ocean views or mountain vistas, but it’s still stunningly beautiful. It’s a golf course without penalty hazards that still makes a player feel like he’s trying to avoid the big number. So why has it been nearly...

While most people these days are swapping the Big Apple for a sunny state, Matt Damon appears to be doing the opposite.  The actor just listed his glorious Pacific Palisades, California home for a whopping $21 million so he could move back to the East Coast for good.  In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, listing agent Eric Haskell of the Agency explained how Damon, 50, decided to make New York City his primary home for him and his family.  In 2017, Damon bought a $16 million penthouse in Brooklyn Heights. “They really love it there, even with everything going on with COVID,” Haskell said. And while they found a new city to call home, they left behind the Zen life. The property stands at a grand 13,508 square feet. The 0.68-acre estate is considered among the most spacious homesites in Upper Riviera. The seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom home is situated on an ultra-private street for optimal security.  It was listed on Jan. 19.  Bathed in natural light, the estate boasts a central atrium with a mahogany ceiling, open family rooms for...

The participating hotels in Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres have reportedly made a deal with pharmacies to provide the COVID...
HONOLULU (AP) — No fans in Los Angeles. No amateurs in Palm Springs. Those were the latest announcements on PGA Tour stops in California as golf heads back to the mainland next week. The Genesis Invitational at Riviera on Feb. 18-21 was predictable. COVID-19 cases are raging in the state with the nation’s largest population. California’s death toll reached 30,000 on Monday. “Throughout our extensive planning, it became clear that due to the pandemic the best way to ensure the safety for all involved is to hold the tournament without spectators,” tournament director Mike Antolini said Tuesday. The first stop is next week in the California desert for The American Express, typically played over three courses and one of two tournaments that feature amateurs during the competition. The other is the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. It now will be played on two courses at PGA West (Stadium Course and Nicklaus Tournament Course). The pro-am format for 54 holes, a part of the tournament since it began in 1960, has been eliminated. It’s expected to return next year. There will be...

UPTOWN — The newest mural in Uptown pays homage to the neighborhood’s marquees and iconic buildings, past and present. Unveiled last week, the mural on the concrete wall at 1145 W. Wilson Ave. reads: “Beyond human dreams of loveliness.” That’s a quote describing the Uptown Theatre, with the mural’s lettering based on marquees and other signs from the neighborhood’s stock of historic venues and buildings, both still in existence and long gone. “Here is the Uptown Theatre. It is beyond human dreams of loveliness, rising in mountainous splendor, achieving that overpowering sense of tremendous size and exquisite beauty — a thing that comes miraculously seldom,” reads a passage from Balaban & Katz Magazine, the publication of the company that built and operated the historic theater.
