Getty Colby Covington exits the Octagon after his welterweight fight against Jorge Masvidal during UFC 272. UFC superstar Colby Covington won another poker tournament just days after being placed seventh in a “record-setting poker tournament.” The former interim welterweight champion has been on the sidelines since his lopsided victory over best friends-turned-enemies Jorge Masvidal in March at UFC 272. Covington used his grappling abilities to dominate Masvidal, coming out on top of the judges’ scorecards with a clean sweep, winning each round. During his time away, Covington kept busy working on his gambling chops. He has been playing at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in South Florida and has won another five-figure cash prize in what is turning out to be a grand week for him, having won three live tournaments in total. Covington returned to the poker tables for Event #22, a $1,100 buy-in Pot-Limit Omaha 8 (Single Re-Entry) event. He competed with 84 players and was opposite three-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Phul Hui at the final table. “I wanted to come back and...

CNN’s John Berman asked the CEO of Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers why he did not just pay his employees money after he bought them each losing lottery tickets earlier this week. A.J. Kumaran made headlines this week after he spent $100,000 on 50,000 Mega Millions lotto tickets he said were for his employees. The fried chicken CEO told Fox & Friends he wanted to share the then-$830 million payout with his employees if the company bought a winning ticket. “We’ve always believed in staying together as a family, taking care of each other, everything, right?” Kumaran said. “Things are hard out there, you know. People are seeing it on their grocery shelves and their gas stations.” None of Kumaran’s 50,000 tickets won the $830 million Tuesday night. Neither did anyone else’s and so now Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot is worth more than $1 billion. Raising Cane’s is raising the stakes by buying another 50,000 tickets for another shot at the prize. Kumaran joined CNN’s New Day Wednesday morning to discuss a second run at winning the lottery. Berman, meanwhile, had...
Kristi Noem said Sunday that she won't let 'the tragedy' of children getting pregnant through rape lead to another tragedy in her state by allowing cases like these to lead to abortion. 'Every single life is precious,' the GOP South Dakota governor told CNN's Dana Bash when asked if a 'child' should have to give birth. 'This tragedy is horrific. I can't even imagine.' 'I don't believe a tragic situation should be perpetuated by another tragedy,' Noem added. 'And so there's more that we have got to do to make sure that we really are living a life that says every life is precious, especially innocent lives that have been shattered, like that 10-year-old girl,' she said during her interview on State of the Union Sunday morning. The response came after trigger laws went into effect in 13 states following the Roe v. Wade overturn and a heartbreaking case of a 10-year-old girl in Ohio needing to travel over state lines to terminate her pregnancy after she was raped. South Dakota is one of the states with these so-called trigger...

Australia’s mixed relay team of Jack Cartwright, Kyle Chalmers, Madison Wilson and Mollie O’Callaghan clocked 3:19.38 in the 4×100 to shave two-hundredths of a second off the record set by the United States at the last worlds in Gwangju, South Korea, in July...
Michael Jordan played in six NBA Finals and won all of them. And with some luck, and some self-control from Draymond Green, Steph Curry could be right there with him. Curry has played in six Finals himself, and now won four of them. One he lost when the Warriors were up three games to one against LeBron’s Cavaliers and going home. But Draymond was enough of a bonehead to get one more technical foul when he knew he was on the doorstep of being suspended for a game. It didn’t stop him from being a bonehead. He did get suspended from Game 5. The Cavs won it on the road and never lost again to the Warriors that year. Fast forward to 2019. The Warriors were the ones who got behind three games to one, to the Raptors. But Kevin Durant tore his Achilles in Game 5, even if the Warriors scratched out a win. DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Jon Rahm is ready to start over at the Memorial as tempting as it is to look back. That last shot he hit at Muirfield Village was tapping in for par on the 18th hole that gave him a six-shot lead and a place in the tournament record book for sharing the lowest 54-hole lead. And that’s as far as he got. Rahm was notified of a positive COVID-19 test that knocked him out of the tournament. “I was mad for about 10 minutes,” Rahm said. “I allowed myself to be upset. But instantly, my switch flipped and I called my wife and I made sure that she was OK and my son was OK.” Moments later, he said he was sharing a laugh with his caddie as they sipped on a milkshake. What else was there to do? “At that moment, I chose to just remember how good I had played,” Rahm said, and that good form continued when he returned two weeks later and captured his first major in the U.S. Open at Torrey...

Manchester City winning the Premier League title hardly comes as a shock. After all, this is a sixth league championship in 11 seasons for one of the world’s richest clubs, placing it among the most dominant periods in the history of the English game. That City was pushed all the way by a resurgent Liverpool isn’t a surprise, either. Nor was the fact that it was the enduring brilliance of Kevin De Bruyne which helped Pep Guardiola’s team eventually get over the line in a dramatic end to the season on Sunday. This was no ordinary title-winning campaign, though. Has a team ever won English soccer’s biggest prize without a striker? City just has. And few would have predicted at the start of the season that defensive midfielder Rodri, center back Aymeric Laporte and playmaker Bernardo Silva would be three of Guardiola’s most vital players. Here’s a look at how City won another Premier League: NO STRIKER, NO PROBLEM City has played the whole season without an out-and-out striker, yet won the league and finished it as the top-scoring team...
BALTIMORE (AP) — Epicenter lost the Kentucky Derby because of a hot pace. Now he’ll face hot temperatures in the Preakness. READ MORE: A Tornado Watch Has Been Issued For Parts Of Maryland. In a race without Rich Strike and no chance at a Triple Crown, there is still some buzz largely because of filly Secret Oath and that it will be a test of whether Epicenter can beat the heat that could approach a record high. “You handle what you have control over and put yourself in the best position possible and try to eliminate as many variables that could get in the way of that,” Epicenter trainer Steve Asmussen said. “If it’s actually 95, 96 degrees here, and we know it can be pretty sticky when it gets warm in Baltimore, so I think that all of them are going...
Baseball Fremont Christian celebrates league crown Longtime Fremont Christian baseball coach Chris Gomez said he still couldn’t believe his team captured a league championship, even as he enjoyed a postgame dinner at a nearby Mexican restaurant. Elevated to a stronger league this spring, Fremont Christian wasn’t expected to rise to the top, Gomez said. But the Warriors found a way on their home field to beat an undefeated Redwood Christian pitcher Monday to clinch the title with one league game to play. Fremont Christian won 2-1. “I just don’t know how we did it,” Gomez said. “I was sitting at the restaurant, saying I don’t know. The guy was so good pitching against us. He was 8-0. I just don’t know how we did it.” They did it behind seniors Daniel Lopez, Emilio Martin and Jadon Campgana — each of whom started as freshmen on Fremont Christian’s North Coast Section Division V championship team in 2019 — and junior pitcher Troy Frazier. With the game scoreless in the fifth, Martin doubled and Campagna was intentionally walked. After a strikeout, Lopez...
POTOMAC, Md. An $800,000 home has hit the market in Fairfax, Virginia — and it comes with its very own squatter. The two winningest coaches in women’s basketball history will square off in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in eight years when Stanford faces Connecticut in the Final Four at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Minneapolis. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Helio Castroneves climbed the fence three times in 12 starts on the downtown streets of St. Petersburg and it is one of his favorite events on the IndyCar schedule. Unless, of course, he was at the popular IndyCar season-opening race as a spectator. Castroneves didn’t care for that at all the last four seasons. “It was absolutely horrible,” the Brazilian said. Phased out of IndyCar after the 2017 season to help launch Team Penske’s sports car program, Castroneves didn’t exactly exit the series on his own terms. When St. Pete officials asked him to be the grand marshal in 2018, his first year out of IndyCar, Castroneves told anyone who would listen that he’d be back in the series someday. “Everyone said when I was the grand marshal, ’Man, you should be (racing).’ I was like, ‘Yeah, thanks. Social media was awash with excitement today as the dates aligned to create a perfect palindrome. The 22nd February, 2022 can be written down as the satisfyingly symmetrical 22.2.22 - a once-in-a-lifetime lineup that won't happen again for another 200 years. The unique date, which reads the same forwards and backwards, has been dubbed 'Twosday' by social media users as it happens to fall on a Tuesday.  As well as a palindrome, it is also an ambigram, which means the date remains the same when its digits are reversed upside-down. A number of further quirks were also raised by eagle-eyed Twitter users. Pointless star Richard Osman noticed that the odds for a 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Lille in the Champions League this evening were 22/1 - so, naturally, he placed a stake of £2.22. The same fixture will also likely feature American forward Timothy Wear, who celebrates his 22nd birthday today and, spookily, also wears the number 22 jersey for the French club. Some of the biggest brands also jumped on the bandwagon, with fashion giant Boohoo offering 22%...

Nevada became the latest blue state to drop indoor mask mandates on Thursday, leaving President Joe Biden increasingly isolated in insisting that tough COVID-19 restrictions stay in place. The White House says it is following the lead of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). But with cases falling 43 percent across the nation in the past week as the Omicron surge fades, it puts Biden out of step with Americans who say they are ready to try to live with the virus and with allies, such as the United Kingdom, where Prime Minister Boris Johnston on Wednesday announced plans to lift all restrictions.  Gov. Steve Sisolak of Nevada became the latest to lift a statewide mask mandate after outlining how the number of hospitalizations had dropped from their peak. 'Given all of these updates, and the tools that we now have, now is the appropriate time for me to announce that Nevada will rescind mask mandates effective immediately,' he told news conference conducted via Zoom. 'Masks will no longer be required in public places.' However, he added that people...

By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — It’s a bit illogical for the most valuable player in the NFL to have such a difficult time winning Super Bowls. Alas, the gift of greatness has been an onerous burden for quite some time. And it appears as though the curse of winning the NFL MVP Award will live on for another year. While we don’t know that Aaron Rodgers will take home the hardware as the NFL MVP this year, all signs are pointing that way. He didn’t have the volume stats of Tom Brady, and he missed a game due to COVID, but Rodgers’ 37 touchdowns and seven interceptions to go with a 13-3 record will seemingly be enough for him to win the award for the fourth time of his career. (Rodgers received 32 of 36 votes in a test poll, which likely provides a good representation of what to expect from the actual vote itself.) Unfortunately for Rodgers, it will also mark the fourth time that he’s won the award in a year that did not end with a Super Bowl...
A third Republican lawmaker who voted in favor of former President Donald Trump's second impeachment has announced he's retiring from Congress.  New York Rep. John Katko, 59, said Friday that he would not seek a fifth term.  'Great news, another one bites the dust,' Trump said in a statement. 'Katko, from Upstate New York, is gone!' We all heard the warnings, about how Democrats were just going through the motions as Republicans mobilized to reshape America’s electorate through sweeping, hyper-partisan gerrymandering. We may even have dismissed them as hyperbole. But no longer. Those warnings are now an urgent, brutal reality. In Tennessee, state Republicans are preparing to split the Democratic stronghold of Nashville into multiple GOP-dominated districts. Tennessee now offers the roadmap for Republican legislatures in states like Kentucky, Florida, and Arizona to divide and conquer Democrats’ most reliable voter bases. The result will be an undemocratic new era where Republicans enjoy a completely artificial and almost insurmountable electoral advantage in the House of Representatives. While President Joe Biden rallied party morale with a powerful speech backing voting rights legislation in Atlanta on Tuesday, West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin’s Freedom to Vote compromise bill doesn’t go far enough to protect American elections from Republican meddling. Democrats must strengthen its election protection provisions or prepare for a lasting wound to our electoral process and a shellacking in November—one that would be surely followed by even more Republican...
Perlmutter is a moderate Democrat representing parts of metropolitan Denver and its suburbs Colorado Rep. Ed Perlmutter announced he won't be seeking re-election in 2022 on Monday, making him the twenty-sixth House Democrat to bow out of this year's midterm elections. Perlmutter, who represents the Centennial State's 7th Congressional District, released a statement in the afternoon explaining that he now wants to 'explore other opportunities.'  The lengthy list of Democrats either retiring or seeking another office at the end of this year puts House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's party at risk of losing their razor-thin majority. Perlmutter's departure from the district he's represented since 2007 could be an opportunity for Republicans to pick up another seat, which he acknowledged in his departure letter. 'After much thought and consideration, I have decided not to run for re-election,' the lawmaker wrote.  He continued, 'even though the numbers are slightly tighter we will win.' 'I’ve never shied away from a challenge but it’s time for me to move on and explore other opportunities. There comes a time when you pass the torch to the...
Mayor of Chicago Lori Lightfoot speaks at the U.S. Conference of Mayors 88th Winter Meeting in Washington, January 23, 2020.Joshua Roberts | Reuters Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Monday said she wants to avoid imposing new lockdown measures as her administration grapples with the latest wave of Covid infections, but added she could not take that option "off the table" amid the omicron surge. "Look, my goal is to make sure we never shut down again," Lightfoot, a Democrat, said on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street." "It was devastating on our economy, on small-business people, on employees," she said. "If we have to do that, certainly I'm not going to take that off the table, but my goal is that we never get to that place." Lightfoot's remarks came on the same day that her city will start requiring proof of Covid vaccination for most residents to enter indoor spaces, such as restaurants, bars, gyms and other areas.CNBC PoliticsRead more of CNBC's politics coverage: Corporations, groups gave over $8 million to GOP election objectors after Jan. 6 riot, study...
BORMIO, Italy (AP) — Icy, bumpy, dark and gnarly. The Stelvio course is skiing’s version of heavy metal. Which is why it fits Dominik Paris, the World Cup circuit’s resident heavy metal singer, so perfectly. Paris dominated again for his record-extending seventh victory in Bormio on Tuesday and sixth in downhill — making him the first skier to win as many downhills at a single resort. The Italian broke a tie with Swiss standout Didier Cuche, who won five downhills in Kitzbühel, Austria. Using his massive legs to absorb the Stelvio’s punishing terrain, Paris finished 0.24 seconds ahead of overall World Cup leader Marco Odermatt of Switzerland and 0.80 ahead of another Swiss skier, Niels Hintermann. “I gave my maximum from the top to the bottom,” Paris said. “I like it here and I believe in myself. This course is rough and tough. When you’ve given your all here you’re satisfied at the finish.” While officially no fans were permitted to attend the race because of anti-coronavirus measures, there were still plenty of cheers for Paris all the way down...
Florida Rep. Stephanie Murphy announced  Monday she will not seek reelection next year, making her the 22nd Democrat to retire. The centrist Democrat said that she was leaving Congress to spend more time with her kids.  'Serving Central Florida has been the honor of my life, but it's also been incredibly challenging for my family and me,' she wrote on Twitter.  'My journey from fleeing a violent, communist regime to being rescued by the US navy to working in national security at the pentagon and now as the first Vietnamese-American congresswoman is a journey that could've only happened here in America,' Murphy said in a video released on Twitter.  She said that she was 'consistently named one of the most bipartisan and effective members of Congress.'  Murphy said that she was 'consistently named one of the most bipartisan and effective members of Congress' 'At a time when politics have become so divisive and dangerous my greatest hope for my colleagues is that they do the same - to stop the name-calling, saber-rattling and the disinformation and to listen to one...
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The highest-ranking member of the Pennsylvania state Senate said Monday that he won’t seek another term in the chamber in order to focus on his candidacy for the governorship. Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman, R-Centre, took himself out of the running for another term representing a State College area district. He had previously said that he would run for both the governor’s office and his Senate seat at the same time when he announced his candidacy last month. Corman is among a large cohort of Republicans seeking the gubernatorial nomination in the May 17 primary election. It is his first run for statewide office. Corman, 57, was first elected to the state Senate in 1998. His father, Doyle Corman, held the seat before him, serving in the Senate from 1977 to 1998. CONCORD — For the second time this season, De La Salle was on the painful side of history. This time, there will be no comeback, no second chances, no more opportunities. When Zeke Berry was stopped at the goal line on a two-point conversion after De La Salle cut the lead to one point with 1:44 left, Folsom recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock. Less than two months after losing at home to De La Salle by three touchdowns, Folsom traveled to Concord and won the Northern California 1-AA championship, 28-27. The victory is the first for a Sac-Joaquin Section team over De La Salle during the Concord’s school’s decades-long run of regional dominance — the section was 0-45 against the Spartans since 1982 — and sends Folsom into the 1-AA state title game next Friday in Mission Viejo. For De La Salle, what seemed like a birth rite has ended. The Spartans will not play in a state championship game for the first time since the California Interscholastic Federation added them...
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Tom Brady’s NFL legacy runs right through Indianapolis. His beat the Colts in his first career start in 2001. Nine years later, he matched Brett Favre’s NFL record for consecutive home wins (25) with a victory over Indy,. He even threw his 500th TD pass at Indianapolis in 2018. So when Brady makes yet another November trip to Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, his first with Tampa Bay, Colts fans don’t want to see their old nemesis celebrating another milestone moment. Even Brady acknowledges it will be different. “It’s a team I’ve played a lot of games against, and pretty meaningful ones,” Brady said. “I don’t think any of those will have any effect on this game this weekend. It’s a totally different opponent, totally different style of play. It’s going to be a great game.” Brady’s memory bank is filled with images of seasons past such as “Deflategate,” Indy’s botched fake punt, even claims about Willie McGinest faking injuries to slow down the Colts’ offense late in a 2003 game. But those 19 games all...
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Donovan Mitchell scored 26 points, Rudy Gobert added 21 points and 14 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double and the Utah Jazz beat the Sacramento Kings 123-105 on Saturday night. Mike Conley had 17 points and Jordan Clarkson scored 16 as Utah won its third straight blowout. The Jazz took the lead for good on 3-pointer by Joe Ingles early in the second quarter and led by 21 while winning their sixth straight against Sacramento. Gobert shot 8 of 12 from the floor, extending his NBA record of 51 consecutive games shooting 50% or better. Richaun Holmes had 22 points and seven rebounds for Sacramento. The Kings have lost seven of eight. The game was paused for more than 10 minutes in the fourth quarter to allow workers to clean up after after an apparently intoxicated fan vomited on the court. The mess was cleared and the fan was escorted away from his courtside seat. That came as the Jazz were on a 12-2 run to start the final period and led 96-82. Utah kept...
In the latest poll to show the political headwinds President Biden is facing, he trails former President Donald Trump 40-51 in a new survey out of Iowa. That is a greater margin than Trumps eight-point 53-45 2020 win over Biden in the state, which helped launch Trump's political career in 2016 during the GOP primaries there. Trump cracks an outright majority in the new Des Moines Register poll, winning 51 per cent support, with 4 per cent saying they wouldn't vote for either man, and 5 per cent saying they weren't sure.  A critical part of Biden's dip comes from independent voters. Independents back Trump in the survey by 45 to 37 per cent.   Former President Trump leads President Biden 51-40 in Iowa Former President Donald Trump leads President Joe Biden in Iowa, a state Trump carried in 2016 and 2020 'Trump won Iowa convincingly in 2020, and that's reflected in these data,' said pollster J. Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy, the chamber's longest serving member, announced on Monday he will not seek re-election next year, offering Republicans an opening to regain control of the Senate.  81-year-old Leahy was first elected in 1974 and serves as the Senate's president pro tempore, placing him third in line to the presidency, after Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. 'It's time to put down the gavel,' he said, announcing his retirement at the Vermont state house in Montpelier.  'It is time to pass the torch to the next Vermonter who will carry on this work of our great state.  'It's time to come home.'  He will be the third longest serving senator in history if he finishes his eighth term at the end of 2022. But it sets up a battle that Democrats will need to fight hard to win if they are to maintain their wafer-thin majority in the Senate.  Democratic Sen. Your best player gets sidelined for a lengthy period, perhaps the rest of the season, and yet you prosper. That’s been the strange scenario recently in Music City, where the Tennessee Titans still have their groove despite losing running back Derrick Henry — also the top player in the AFC South — to a broken foot. “Derrick’s a guy, he’s hard to replace,” center Ben Jones says. “He’s done it multiple years now. We kind of got a rhythm with him, knowing how he hits runs and stuff. So it’s definitely some learning curve, and we’ve got to do as an offensive line. We’ve got to keep grinding and just make this run game come to life.” Tennessee (7-2), with a 3 1/2-game lead in the division and standing atop the entire conference, hosts New Orleans (5-3) on Sunday. The Titans are 6-0 against 2020 playoff teams, including wins in four straight games. Tennessee has won five straight overall, the longest active streak in the NFL. The Saints, 4-1 in games played outside New Orleans, are without their starting...
BRITAIN claimed another scalp over France in the salty fishing war tonight as the trapped scallop trawler was finally freed. After being held in Le Havre for a week, a court ordered the immediate release of the Cornelis Gert Jan and its seven-strong crew. 2The Cornelis Gert Jan sailed free from the French port of Le Havre tonightCredit: AFP It was detained last Wednesday for dredging two tonnes of scallops without a licence on French waters. The Cornelis’s skipper, Irishman Jondy Ward, was charged with illegal fishing - plunging him into a huge cross-Channel political storm. It is another victory for Boris Johnson after a bitter war of words with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. Today Mr Ward appeared before an appeal court in Rouen, an hour from Le Havre, for a closed hearing. His legal team argued for the boat to be released and against the mammoth £125,000 bail bond, and won. Mr Ward’s lawyer Mathieu Croix said: "The court followed our arguments and cancelled the seizure. The boat is free to leave Le Havre immediately without having to...
