By Leyla Santiago | CNN Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has repeatedly pointed to the case of a family in the state’s Leon County to explain the need for a controversial new law, dubbed by critics the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, that bans schools from teaching about sexual orientation or gender identity, particularly to young children. On several occasions since signing the bill into law, DeSantis has highlighted the story of a woman named January Littlejohn, a registered Republican, who says she was not fully consulted about the school’s gender-affirming plan for her child. “We had a mother from Leon County, and her daughter was going to school and some people in the school had decided that the daughter was really a boy and not a girl. So they changed the girl’s name to a boy’s name, had her dress like a boy and on doing all this stuff, without telling the mother or getting consent from the mother. Mitt Romney went all in flaunting his Halloween costume on social media on Thursday, posting several images and gifs of him portraying Apple TV series character Ted Lasso, from the show of the same name. In a gif posted to Twitter on Thursday, the Republican Utah senator was dressed in a soccer jersey and khakis as he caught a soccer ball kicked to him while he was walking the halls of Congress. 'Warming up for Halloween weekend with the grandkids,' Romney tweeted. 'As @TedLasso says, 'Your body is like day-old rice. If it ain't warmed up properly, something real bad could happen,' he continued with a quote from the show. Romney reenacted two other scenes from the show while wearing his costume to work on Thursday, complete with a bushy mustache. The senator posed with colleague Kyrsten Sinema, a centrist Democrat from Arizona, for one of the scenes. Romney was handing Sinema a 'biscuit', which happens often in the show when Lasso gives his boss Rebecca Welton, played by Hannah Waddingham, a small pick package at the beginning of every...
Paramount The ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ creative team, along with Kate Mulgrew One of the reasons that the “Star Trek” franchise is unique and stands alone from most all other science fiction and adventure stories is the focus on optimism. Gene Roddenberry’s vision of a positive future stands in stark contrast to what fans see in “The Terminator” or “Blade Runner.” Trek certainly is different from the endless war and fighting seen in “Star Wars.” It was to this high standard that Roddenberry created the franchise’s first cartoon show — “Star Trek: The Animated Series.” Written as if it were the continuation of the show, which was canceled in 1969, TAS did not fall into the familiar Saturday morning cartoon tropes that most shows geared toward children do. In fact, TAS even won a Daytime Emmy Award for one of its episodes. “The Animated Series” Play VideoVideo related to prodigy: a kid’s show worthy of the name ‘star trek’2021-10-21T22:02:26-04:00 So this legacy for taking storytelling seriously is absolutely a focus of the creative team behind the franchise’s newest addition, “Star Trek: Prodigy.”...

Meghan Markle dropped a major hint that her new animated Netflix series will be based - at least in part - on her own childhood, by naming both the show and its title character Pearl, the Welsh meaning of her name.  The 39-year-old mother-of-two announced details of her new project for the streaming giant on Wednesday, revealing that she will both 'create and produce' the series, which focuses on a '12-year-old heroine who finds inspiration in influential women from history'.  However it seems that Meghan is also shouldering another major role within the creation of the series - serving as the inspiration for its title character.   Few other details were released about the series - which is being co-produced by Elton John's husband David Furnish - including which influential female figures will feature, however the choice of name for its young 'heroine' offers a fair amount of insight into the kind of character that will be portrayed on screen.  The name Meghan originated in Wales, where it is traditionally spelled Megan, and where it means 'pearl' - the moniker given to...

(CNN)The latest batch of TV reboots haven't had much in common with the source beyond the name, and so it is with "Kung Fu," which -- like the recent "Walker" -- CW-izes a familiar TV property in a mostly unrecognizable way. In this case, a modern-day female lead learns mad martial-arts skills, in an uninspired series whose action and key narrative device owe at least as much to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" as its half-century-old namesake.Racing through the plot in the very, very busy pilot episode, the series stars Olivia Liang as Nicky Shen, a young Chinese-American woman who, on a solo trip to China, winds up dropping off the map and entering a Shaolin monastery, where she's trained for more than three years. After an attack on the monastery -- and the theft of a priceless sword -- Nicky returns home to San Francisco, just as her sister (Shannon Dang) is about to get married. Her arrival reopens old wounds about family dynamics, particularly involving her demanding mom ("Crazy Rich Asians'" Kheng Hua Tan), who clearly invested plenty of...
Last year, the world’s largest phone show, Mobile World Congress, hung on to the idea of hosting an in-person event during the COVID-19 pandemic as long as it could, even as major exhibitors kept pulling out — and the dominoes may be falling on this year’s show as well. Google just announced that it will not exhibit at MWC this year. It’s the biggest name so far, following major telecom infrastructure providers Nokia and Ericsson as well as Sony and Oracle. Here’s Google’s full statement: Following our current COVID-19 travel restrictions and protocols, Google has made the decision to not exhibit at Mobile World Congress this year. We will continue to collaborate closely with GSMA and support our partners through virtual opportunities. We look forward to this year’s activities and seeing you in Barcelona in 2022. In February, the GSMA (which runs Mobile World Congress) insisted that it would go ahead with the potential superspreader event this June, requiring only an array of standard precautions, mask-wearing, and a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival, none of which are...
A little girl named Galya stole the show when Vice President Kamala Harris visited a pre-k to kindergarten classroom Friday with her exuberant and outgoing personality. The little girl, identified in pool reports first as “Dalya” and later as “Galya” (confirmed by a teacher) can be heard spelling her name and telling Harris staffers “I want to see Kamala Harris”  repeatedly as the class awaited the VP — who was delivering remarks at the West Haven Child Development Center. The staffers can be heard teaching the kids the correct pronunciation of Harris’ name: “Comma-la.” “You’re nice, not crazy!” Galya tells a staffer in her distinctive voice, then told the staffers, to laughter, that “I’m going to tell all my family about you.” She then proceeded to hold court with reporters, rattling off the spellings of her sisters’ names and reporting that “I have two TVs,” one upstairs and one downstairs, with a third TV for her room in the works. That adorableness continued for another ten minutes or so, until VP Harris finally appeared in the classroom. Then, Galya crawled...

Crump noted that Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, has urged protesters to remain peaceful since her daughter's death and said that the recent grand jury decision does not change their calls for peace. He told The View that the best way to honor Taylor's life is to maintain the peace while demonstrating. "We understand their righteous anger because we feel it, too. But as Breonna’s family has asked, as her mother, Tamika, has asked, please demonstrate peaceful protests. She said that Breonna would not condone violence," Crump said on Thursday. "We want to honor Breonna’s legacy. We want to respect Breonna, especially now, when she wasn’t respected in this grand jury proceeding. Let’s show Breonna the ultimate respect by having peaceful protests in her name," he added. Find out at WWE Extreme Rules: The Horror Show, streaming Sunday, July 19, at 7 ET/4 PT on the award-winning WWE Network!” As further noted by Cageside Seats, the same pay-per-view name was used in a separate preview article for WWE Champion Drew McIntyre’s title defense against Dolph Ziggler.
