SANTA CLARA — The preseason is here, and the regular season cannot come soon enough. The Niners beat the Packers 28-21 in the team’s sorta-kinda season debut. And while a large portion of the team didn’t dress for the game and starting quarterback Trey Lance only played two series, we still learned — or at least noted — a few things in the contest. Here are the big takeaways: Hey, Trey Lance can slide! Obviously, the 49ers are not allowed to hit their quarterbacks in practices. That would be a terrible policy. So while we have been able to see first-year starter Lance run a bit in training camp, we had not seen him slide to end a rush. And that’s a rather important thing to do as a starting quarterback these days, as Lance learned last season when he sprained his knee in his first ever NFL start because he went full crash-test dummy against the Cardinals in Week 5. So there was a bit of a shock in the press box when Lance scrambled on his second play...

Christine Queally Attachments 7:00 AM (3 hours ago) to Chris, David, Editors, reporters, webdesk, Web There are several things to keep in mind if you pull the winning ticket of Friday's Mega Millions jackpot drawing, worth an estimated $1.1 billion. The first question that has to be answered by a winner is how they will accept the winnings. There are two options for claiming the prize: taking the cash value or the annuity. MEGA MILLIONS JACKPOT TOPS $1 BILLION AFTER NO WINNER TUESDAY NIGHT The cash value provides a one-time payment, and taxes slash the sum from the estimated $648.2 million cash value for Friday's drawing. The annuity option provides winners with 30 payments over 30 years, with each payment being 5% larger than the previous. The annuity option "helps protect winners’ lifestyle and purchasing power in periods of inflation," according to the Mega Millions website. There also may be scammers who try to take money away from winners. Mega Millions representatives will never call, text, or email anyone about winning the prize, a preferred...
(CNN)Efforts by Democratic campaigns, committees and outside groups to tilt the playing field in their favor by supporting extremist Republican primary candidates are sparking backlash as other Democrats warn the tactic risks putting conspiracy theorists and election deniers in office. The latest flashpoint in the debate came this week when the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee began running ads touting GOP candidate John Gibbs, who has the backing of former President Donald Trump, over Michigan Rep. Peter Meijer, one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach the former President after January 6, 2021."I believe Democrats should focus on helping Democrats win," said Rebecca Katz, a longtime Democratic strategist who is now advising John Fetterman's Senate campaign in Pennsylvania. "In this year of all years, why make that gamble in a Republican primary? It just seems like their priorities are out of whack."So far, millions have been spent in the meddling, with Democrats looking to boost more extreme candidates in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Colorado, all in the belief that one of their candidates will be more likely to win a...
Former President Donald Trump took aim at some of his favorite populist targets in a speech on Tuesday before joking that he would be a champion female basketball coach if he entered the sport, because he would persuade LeBron James to play as a woman. Trump returned to Washington, D.C., for the first time since leaving office to deliver a speech at a conference held by the America First Policy Institute. Earlier Mike Pence, his vice president, had set out a 'freedom agenda' roadmap for conservatives, tying the right to life and culture war issues into an appeal to protect American values. It offered Republicans a stark split screen of the way two possible 2024 candidates would run their campaigns. In contrast to Pence's neat roadmap modeled on conservative philosophy, Trump laid out a laughter-filled grab bag of populist talking points - from executions for drug dealers to moving the homeless from city centres to out-of-town tent cities - before condemning the way transgender athletes can compete in women's sport. 'l tell you what if I were ever I'd be the...

Patrick Mahomes gave all Chiefs fans something to smile about after he made comments on his salary. Chiefs legend Patrick Mahomes started the rise in the quarterback market after receiving his 10-year, $450 million contract in 2020, so he shouldn’t care about what Kyler Murray is making. That contract Mahomes has doesn’t even include his endorsements or anything else he does to bring in the money, so when he commented on making enough money on and off the football field, it’s true. However, the question had to get asked since the Cardinals and Murray recently agreed to a 5-year $230.5 million contract that guaranteed him $160 million. That contract for Murray is staggering, but it shouldn’t and doesn’t phase Mahomes. America is a tinderbox, Donald Trump and his allied political arsonists are on a rampage. And yet, it’s Democrats who keep pouring gasoline on the flames. That’s my conclusion after watching the spate of election-denying MAGA candidates win Republican primaries, with more than a little help from their frenemies. Indeed, Democrats are spending millions to boost far-right candidates. Let’s start in my native state of Maryland. On Tuesday, Republicans rejected the moderate two-term Gov. Larry Hogan’s chosen heir apparent, to vote in favor of Trump-backed Dan Cox, a man Hogan describes as a “QAnon whack job.” After Cox’s victory, Democrats were quick to denounce the GOP, declaring that, “They’ve succumbed to the ultra-ignorant QAnon, MAGA wing of their party.” They have a point. The only problem? Democrats helped build that. The Democratic Governors’ Association (DGA) funded an ad that aired during the run-up to the Republican primaries, noting (among other things) that Cox was “100 percent pro-life.” The ad included flattering photos of Cox with his family, and one with him next to a smiling, thumbs-up-giving Donald Trump. Legal access to abortion is unchanged in Minnesota after the overturning of Roe v. Wade last week by the U.S. Supreme Court because of protections in state law and the state constitution. REUTERS/Nicole NeriGov. Tim WalzBut in the wake of the landmark federal ruling, local Democrats have said Republicans will roll back Minnesota abortion laws if they win control of the state Legislature and governor’s office in the fall election. “If Scott Jensen has his way, Minnesota would become one of the most anti-choice states in the nation,” Gov. Tim Walz told reporters at the Capitol on Tuesday, referencing the leading Republican candidate for the state’s top office. Any legislation significantly curtailing existing abortion access would likely fail if Walz is re-elected or if Democrats are in control the state House or Senate next year. Volodymyr Zelensky's top adviser has told the West to dramatically step up deliveries of heavy weapons if Ukraine is to defeat Russia's invasion. Mykhailo Podolyak said Monday that Kyiv needs 1,000 howitzers, 300 rocket artillery systems, 500 tanks, 2,000 armoured vehicles and 1,000 drones 'to end the war'.  The eye-watering shopping list amounts to an army's-worth of Western equipment and goes well beyond both what has been supplied so far and what Ukraine itself has been requesting. Put in context, 500 new tanks would be more than the UK and Germany have in active service combined, while 1,000 howitzers and 300 rocket launchers is more than the US currently has in active service. The US has supplied a little over 100 howtizers to Ukraine so far while the US and UK combined are thought to have sent seven rocket systems. Podolyak published the list amid heavy fighting in Ukraine's east - where Russia has this week issued a 'surrender or die' order to troops defending a key Donbas city - and ahead of a Wednesday meeting in Brussels to discuss...
The Warriors brought themselves one win away from an NBA championship with a Game 5 win on Monday night. And the guy who led them there was Andrew Wiggins. The 27-year-old had his second brilliant game in a row, leading the Warriors with 26 points and 13 rebounds on the night and helping Golden State’s defense lock down the Celtics en route to a 104-94 win. It was a night where Stephen Curry didn’t make a 3-pointer at all, going 0-for-9, making it the first playoff game he’s ever gone without a 3-point make and ending an NBA-record 132 straight playoff games with a 3-pointer. Curry did score 16 points, mostly by attacking the basket, like so many on Golden State did all night. No one did that better all night than Wiggins (who went 0-for-6 from 3-point range himself), though Klay Thompson scored 21 points and made five from deep, Gary Payton II added 15 points and Jordan Poole contributed 14 — including an impressive buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter. PARIS (AP) — Why is the French Open more likely to produce first-time and one-time Grand Slam champions than the Australian Open, Wimbledon or the U.S. Open? Why are there so many surprising results at Roland Garros? What distinguishes its red clay from the surfaces used at the three other major tennis tournaments? THE CLAY The French Open is the only Grand Slam tournament held on clay courts — which actually aren’t made of clay, but rather the dust from red brick on top of a layer of crushed white limestone. Wimbledon, which begins this year on June 27, is famously contested on grass. The U.S. Open, which starts on Aug. 29, and Australian Open, held in January, each uses a different type of hard court. The softness and speed-absorbing grab of clay courts slow down shots more than the other surfaces do, dulling speedy serves and groundstrokes. The clay’s grittiness magnifies the effect of heavy spin (think of 13-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal’s uppercut lefty forehands), creating higher arcs as the balls rebound off the ground. “Clay...
Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart’s impending massive extension will have major implications for Nick Saban’s Alabama football program. After leading his alma mater’s Georgia football program to its first national title in 41 years, head coach Kirby Smart will be getting a massive extension in short order. News of Smart getting a mega-extension comes as a surprise to absolutely no one. Georgia football is everything in The Classic City and throughout much of The Peach State. This is why University of Georgia president Jere Morehead has made it a priority to keep Coach Smart around … forever. Morehead expects Smart will receive his mega-contract extension “in the coming weeks”.“It will be commensurate with what you would expect compensation to be for a national championship coach,” said Morehead to Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday. “We’re close to finalizing those arrangements. I don’t think anybody will be surprised.” While Smart has earned every penny of the new contract he will be getting, what is the fallout for his mentor Nick Saban, as well as his juggernaut Alabama football program?Kirby Smart extension: What does...
(CNN)If the polls are to be believed, former Georgia Sen. David Perdue is headed toward a crushing primary defeat Tuesday in his challenge to GOP Gov. Brian Kemp.A recently released Fox poll showed Kemp at 60%, compared to just 28% for Perdue, a stunning finding that suggests the incumbent isn't going to just win -- he is going to romp.Which, at first glance, may seem weird. After all, former President Donald Trump encouraged Perdue to enter the race in the first place and endorsed him. Kemp has been enemy #1 for Trump since he refused to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. But there's a lesson to be learned here. And that lesson is this: Running a campaign solely on the false notion that the 2020 election was stolen isn't enough to win.Read MoreThe truth of Perdue's candidacy is that he has never found any message beyond a) the election was stolen (it wasn't) and b) Kemp didn't do enough to, ahem, stop the steal. On everything other than that, Perdue seemed to be generally simpatico with Kemp. Both were down-the-line...

Getty Austin Dillon has weighed in on the conversation about aggressive moves. With Joey Logano sending William Byron into the wall at Darlington Raceway, there are questions about what NASCAR drivers will do to secure the all-important win. Austin Dillon has weighed in and said that the aggressiveness is a product of the current system. The driver of the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet met with media members on May 12 to preview the trip to Kansas Speedway. He explained that these aggressive moves are more difficult at 1.5-mile tracks because there is always the danger of taking yourself out of the race. Though Dillon continued and explained that the opportunities for aggressive moves are really the only way to get the important win. “I think that’s what NASCAR has put together with this Playoff system, that wins mean so much and you do what it takes when it comes down to it to go to Victory Lane,” Dillon explained. “I think everybody’s organizations would be upset if they didn’t.” ALL the latest NASCAR news straight to...

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) said Sunday that as long as the price tag on President Joe Biden‘s requested $33 billion aid package for Ukraine can be justified, then Republicans will “absolutely” go along with it. “This has changed from a war in which we thought Russia was going to win into one in which we think the Ukrainians can win,” Cassidy said in a Fox News interview. “And I’ll point out: the Russians are killing civilians, the Ukrainians are killing Russian tanks.” He argued that it is “a lot better to destroy the other person’s army than attempt to break their will, because the Ukrainians are not going to give up.” “Let’s give the Ukrainians what they need for victory,” Cassidy added. Asked if Ukraine can count on the U.S. for continued support, the Louisiana Republican said he thinks they can since “the understanding is that if Russia is not stopped in Ukraine, they’re going to keep going” and will eventually trigger the U.S.’s NATO alliance. “It’s better for us to support the Ukrainians than to trigger that so that our young men...

(CNN)The former commander of the US Special Operations Command in Europe, retired US Army Maj. Gen. Mike Repass, says the international community has to greatly increase its support for Ukraine if the embattled nation is ever going to be able to drive the Russians out.Repass has advised the Ukrainian military for the past six years on a US government contract. Last month he visited Poland and western Ukraine to get a better feel for the trajectory of the war in Ukraine. I spoke to him Friday and Monday. He says the Ukrainian supply chain for military equipment is inefficient and that additional military forces are required to drive the Russians out of Ukraine. To win the war in Ukraine, Repass advocates that the US and its allies build up a Ukrainian strategic force amounting to five brigades of up to 40,000 soldiers capable of mounting offensive operations to force the Russians out of their country.Disclosure: Repass is on the advisory council of the Global Special Operations Foundation, where I am the chairman of the board. At some point during spring training, when most free agents had found new homes and most managers were auditioning potential Opening Day lineups, the baseball industry turned its attention to the computers. Each year, the publication of some combination of PECOTA projections, ZiPS projections and Las Vegas odds gives reporters an easy story. Take note of the computer projections, ask a player and executive their thoughts on those projections and start writing. Every spring, you’ll see articles like these: “Why the Giants think the computers are wrong,” or “What Giants players think the projections are missing this year.” More often than not, after a 162-game season, the computers turned out to be fairly accurate. The relative success of these models is what made the Giants’ record-setting 107-win season so stunning last year. And it’s part of what could make this year’s Giants team even easier for fans to support. As French voters head to the polls Sunday, Wall Street is forecasting market upset if far-right candidate Marine Le Pen proves victorious.Timothy A. Clary | Afp | Getty Images French voters head to the polls on Sunday to cast their ballots in the final round of a close presidential race between incumbent Emmanuel Macron and rival Marine Le Pen. Centrist Macron was seen taking the lead against his far-right opponent Friday as the pair face a rerun of their 2017 tete-a-tete. In the final day of campaigning ahead of this weekend's second-round vote, polls showed Macron with a 57.5% lead over Le Pen's 42.5%. The Chicago Bulls nearly pulled an upset in Game 1 of their first-round NBA playoff series against the Milwaukee Bucks, erasing a 16-point first-half deficit before falling 93-86. Here are four takeaways from the game as the Bulls regroup for Game 2 on Wednesday night in Milwaukee. 1. The Bulls committed to playing physical defense. The Bulls defense was the star of the show Sunday, locking down a Bucks offense that finished the regular season on an ascendant scoring streak. After the Bucks jumped to a 16-point lead, the Bulls defense clamped down and held the Bucks below 20 points in the second and fourth quarters. The key was a complete physical commitment. The Bulls threw bodies at every player and into every passing lane. This led to 21 Bucks turnovers, a high number of errors for such a veteran team. The defense still showed weaknesses — especially on skip passes, which allowed the Bucks to move the ball through rotations until they hit an open player. But paired with an especially poor shooting night for both teams, this effort...

(CNN)Tiger Woods had already won the minute he walked onto that fairway at the 86th Masters golf tournament on Thursday and, for me, he doesn't need a sixth green jacket prize to prove it.
