This gave her the idea to create a service that allowed salons in the UK to do the same, but no other shops...
People quickly become convinced that a human-like robot is capable of independent thoughts and emotions, a new study has found. This occurs when a robot appears to act on its own beliefs and desires, rather than on what it is programmed to do. Researchers from the Italian Institute of Technology probed the response of study participants to an anthropomorphic robot called iCub. The participants completed a questionnaire before and after interacting with iCub, that was programmed to act either like a robot or in a more friendly manner. It was found that those exposed to the robot programmed to act more like a human were more likely to rate the robot's actions as intentional. The findings come after a Google software engineer was suspended last month for claiming that the company's AI system had become sentient.    Researchers from the Italian Institute of Technology found that people are able to be quickly convinced that a human-like robot is capable of independent thoughts and emotions An example question from the questionnaire given to study participants before and after interacting with iCub, that was programmed...

Immigration detention centers are not places where you’ll find serious criminals, yet there are many facilities and staff which provide an environment that is on par and, in some cases, worse than you’ll find in prisons. Many of these people are just trying to find a better life, maybe even escaping persecution in their own country, but then are met with various abuses and poor living conditions and are sometimes detained for years. In some cases, they were even wrongfully imprisoned in the first place. Here are 10 instances in which human rights violations occurred in immigration detention centers. 1. Fascinating charts that show the rapid growth and slow decline of the human brain over an entire lifetime have been revealed by scientists. They illustrate how our minds change from a 15-week-old foetus all the way up to an 100-year-old adult, and are the result of a research project spanning six continents and involving almost 125,000 brain scans. The charts have allowed experts to confirm – and in some cases, show for the first time – developmental milestones that have previously only been hypothesised, such as at what age different areas of the brain reach peak volume. Grey matter, or brain cells, for example, increase rapidly from mid-gestation onwards, peaking just before we turn six years old. They then slowly begin to decrease. White matter, or brain connections, also increase quickly through early childhood and peak just before humans reach the age of 29, before the decline accelerates when a person gets to their fifties. Grey matter or brain cells increase rapidly from mid-gestation onwards, peaking just before we turn six years old (pictured). There is then a slow decline in...
Monkeys actively seek out fruit that has become ripe enough for the sugars to have fermented, producing about two percent alcohol, new study discovered. Biologists from UC Berkeley collected fruit that had been eaten and discarded by black-handed spider monkeys in Panama, as well as taking urine samples. They discovered that the fruit typically had an alcohol concentration of between one and two percent by volume, created as a byproduct of natural fermentation.  Robert Dudley, a UC Berkeley biologist, has been studying humans' love of alcohol for the past 25 years, and in 2014 wrote a book suggesting this started in our ape and monkey ancestors, who discovered that the scent of alcohol led them to ripe fruit. The new study supports the 'drunken monkey' hypothesis, and increases our understanding of how the love of alcohol first formed in human brains. The Polk County Sheriff's Office in Florida announced 108 arrests Wednesday, with charges ranging from lewd battery and soliciting prostitution to the transmission of harmful material to a minor, among others. The following might help to explain why so many Disney employees oppose Florida’s “Don’t-Groom-Little-Kids” bill. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd on Wednesday announced the arrest of 108 people as part of “Operation March Sadness 2,” a six-day undercover operation. One of the Disney employees was a 27-year-old man who worked as a lifeguard at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Judd said. That man allegedly sent sexual images of himself and graphic sexual messages to an undercover detective who was posing online as a 14-year-old girl, Judd said. Another Disney employee arrested was a 24-year-old man who worked at the Cosmic Restaurant. Other Disney employees arrested were a 45-year-old IT worker and a 27-year-old software developer, Judd said. Gee, I simply can’t imagine why people like that would oppose a bill that prohibits sexualizing kids aged four to eight in the classroom. A HUMAN skull found outside of a derelict hotel next to a camouflage jacket has left forensic experts stumped. The mystery remains may never be identified after being discovered outside of the Egerton House Hotel in Bolton, Greater Manchester, last year. 3The grim find was made outside of the Egerton House Hotel in BoltonCredit: MEN Media An inquest heard that Greater Manchester Police had attempted to identify the grizzly finding with DNA, but were unable to find a match. The skull was discovered last March by two self-named “ghost hunters” next to a grey camouflage jacket. Experts in anthropology and radio carbon dating concluded that the skull belonged to a man, who was likely aged 32 to 58 years old at the time of death. Bolton Coroners Court heard that it was most likely that he died between 1801 and 1953. Prof Alan Walsh recorded an open conclusion, and told the hearing: "It's frustrating, but both the police and coroner can only...
A 300-year-old bedsheet embroidered with a love message in human hair that was possibly taken from a severed head is to go on display at a London museum. Anna Maria Radclyffe embellished the old linen in memory of her husband James, who was beheaded for treason in 1716.  The third Earl of Derwentwater and grandson of Charles II, he was 26 when he was executed for his involvement in the first Jacobite rebellion, a story which was immortalised in Sir Walter Scott's 1817 novel Rob Roy.   Intricately decorated with flowers, leaves and a large wreath in the shape of a heart, the bedsheet's inscription reads: 'The sheet OFF MY dear Lord's Bed in the wretched Tower of London February 1716 x Ann C of Darwent=Waters+.' Experts believe the hair used by Anna could have come from herself or her husband, or she could have intertwined a combination of the two.  Creepy: A 300-year-old bedsheet embroidered with a love message in human hair that was possibly taken from a severed head is to go on display at a London museum Anna...
A Roman ceramic vessel found in Sicily has been found to contain a 'crusty material' harbouring 1,500-year-old intestinal parasite eggs, revealing it to be a chamber pot. The portable toilet — which stood at 12.5 inches high and 13.4 inches wide — was found by University of Cambridge-led experts in the baths of the Villa of Gerace. According to the team, users may have sat on the pot directly to defecate, or perhaps placed it underneath a specially designed timber or wickerwork chair. The findings and similar studies in the future, the team said, have the potential to advance our understanding of the diet, sanitation and health in ancient times. A robotic bartender named Cecilia - who can pour 120 drinks an hour and crack a few bad jokes - is offering a new form of bar service. The seven-foot-tall interactive robot, who can speak 40 languages and has various features including an ID scanner, is currently residing at the Florida International University's Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management in Miami to teach hospitality students about the industry. The development of robotic bartender Cecilia.ai had taken more than three years in Israel. To use Cecilia, customers can verbally request their order or use a touchscreen menu to choose from a variety of cocktails which comes out of a slot in the machine.  The robot can respond with the options available or even suggesting an alternative for customers.   'The idea of a robot bartender replacing human mixologists is “not even close to reality,"' Brian Connors, director of the Bacardi Center for Excellence and an FIU hospitality professor, told the Miami Herald. 'This is a defined mix of high tech and high touch hospitality. In this industry, we are always going...
HUMAN spines that were threaded onto wooden posts 500 years ago as part of a gruesome ritual have been discovered in Peru. Nearly 200 examples of the grim creations, believed to be attempts to reconstruct bones from ransacked graves, were found in the Chincha Valley. 3Human vertebrae threaded onto human posts in Peru's Chincha ValleyCredit: Antiquity Writing in a paper published today, archaeologists said that the vertebrae are believed to have been assembled between AD 1450 and 1650. This aligns with a rough period in the region's history when the rule of the Incas came to an end and European colonists looted indigenous graves. "This was a turbulent period in the history of the Chincha Valley, when epidemics and famines decimated local peoples," said study lead author Dr Jacob Bongers from the University of East Anglia. The international team of researchers searched for "vertebrae-on-posts" in indigenous graves known as chullpas. Hundreds of the large, elaborate structures are spread across the Chincha Valley, about 200 km south of Peru's capital, Lima. They discovered a total of 192 bone-laced posts, each of...
