May Pang was clearly up to a challenge. Fresh out of school at 19, she had talked her way into a coveted job at the New York offices of The Beatles' music company Apple Records. She was outgoing and rebellious but also amenable, and John Lennon and wife Yoko Ono liked her so much they soon asked her to become their personal assistant. The rock 'n' roll-mad daughter of Chinese immigrants from Spanish Harlem enjoyed every minute of her time with the couple — the union many believed broke up the Fab Four. Pang was soon helping them in the recording studio, accompanying them to the UK and their country mansion at Tittenhurst Park, Ascot, and proving so engaging and photogenic that David Bailey shot her as part of a Lennon-Ono album cover. Pang bought John and Yoko's groceries and answered the phone — and she also supplied backing vocals on some of their songs including the 1971 hit single Happy Christmas (War Is Over). Then, one morning in 1973, when she turned up for work at their home in...
Visitors to Los Angeles often put on their list of city sights the Hollywood sign, the Venice boardwalk, the Watts Towers, and for the more adventurous and olfactory-challenged, the Farmer John’s meatpacking plant in Vernon. A favored destination for location scouts, for aficionados of camp, muralists and hot dog connoisseurs, this hidden-away abattoir was less distinguished for what took place inside its walls than for its civic packaging. From the corners of Bandini Boulevard, Soto Street and Vernon Avenue, tourists and locals alike can take in scenes of a bucolic, agrarian past such as Los Angeles has never known. Painted pigs gambol in green fields by meandering streams under blue, cloud-studded skies happily oblivious of the fate that awaited them within. That fate took a slightly different turn Friday when the owner of the facility, Smithfield Foods, announced the facility will close early next year. The Virginia-based company said that this step is necessary due to “the escalating cost of doing business in California.” The fate of the building has yet to be determined. “We are exploring all our options,”...

With "Lennon, the Mobster, & the Lawyer: The Untold Story," Jay Bergen has authored a page-turner of a book about, of all things, a lawsuit. You may be drawn to the title as a Beatles fan, but you'll leave having enjoyed a glimpse into the strategic core of a first-rate legal mind. It is incredible to contemplate the sheer amount of time that John Lennon spent with various legal cases taking up his headspace, the most prominent of which was surely his longstanding immigration case. Lennon existed in public life for some 17 years, with fully a third of it living in fear of being deported from the United States. He had landed on President Richard M. Nixon's notorious enemies list, which resulted in years of legal entanglements for the former Beatle as he fought to stay in the country. Fortunately, Lennon prevailed, earning his coveted Green Card in July 1976. But that's another story. In "Lennon, the Mobster, & the Lawyer," Bergen focuses on Lennon's other case, his intellectual property dispute with Morris Levy, the publisher of Chuck Berry's...
As the lead singer of vocal trio the Ronettes, Ronnie Spector helped bring a hot, sexy edge to the Sixties girl-group sound. She was the muse and would become, notoriously, the prisoner of producer husband Phil Spector. Before she died in January at the age of 78, she updated her sensational autobiography – an astonishing glimpse into the hedonistic excesses of her rock ’n’ roll life... The Ronettes, were signed by legendary music producer Phil Spector in March 1963.  Once he had us, we became his obsession. And pretty soon Phil and I were boyfriend and girlfriend. He wasn’t what some people would call handsome. Even though he was only 22, Phil already had a receding hairline and almost no chin. But he had great eyes. They looked deep, like he could see right into you. I thought he was adorable. Our first single, Be My Baby, hit the charts in the last week of August 1963. After that, the thrills only got bigger. We started a tour of Britain in January 1964. We must have been quite a sight...
Julian Lennon is covering one of his late father John Lennon's most iconic songs for the first time ever.  After a longstanding vow to never perform the tune, the 59-year-old singer-songwriter delivered a haunting performance of Imagine during a benefit for Ukraine refugees on Saturday, April 9.  In a dark room full of candles, Julian Lennon did his version with only vocals and an acoustic guitar, played by Nuno Bettencourt, who would join to sing the final chorus in the arrangement. Iconic: Julian Lennon, 59, performed his late father John Lennon's classic song Imagine for the first time during the Stand Up For Ukraine Campaign benefit event 'Today, for the first time ever, I publicly performed my Dad's song, Imagine, the Liverpool, England native wrote on YouTube along with a video of his performance. 'The song reflects the light at the end of the tunnel, that we are all hoping for.' He continued, 'I had always said, that the only time I would ever consider singing Imagine would be if it was the end of the world.' RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1...

New damning developments pertaining to the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol have come to light. According to Washington Post, the latest investigative update involves former President Donald Trump's lawyer John Eastman. The report, written by Washington Post reporters Josh Dawsey, Jacqueline Alemany, Jon Swaine, and Emma Brown, explains how Eastman attempted to build a case to persuade former Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election. It has been revealed that "even as rioters overran the Capitol and a recalcitrant Pence was forced into hiding, Eastman emailed a Pence aide to actually blame Pence for the scene." At one point, Pence's aide Greg Jacob also became embroiled in a heated exchange with Eastman telling him that "his 'bullshit legal advice was why Pence's team was 'under siege.' An accusation Eastman replied to with a suggestion pushing the blame off on Pence. "The 'siege' is because YOU and your boss did not do what was necessary to allow this [election challenge] to be aired in a public way so that the American people can see for themselves what happened,"...

Eighteen former NBA players were arrested and charged Thursday for defrauding the league’s health and welfare benefit plan. Most basketball fans were stunned by the bombshell report, but not Daily Show host Trevor Noah. “Why are we surprised?” Noah said on his Comedy Central show. “Pretending to be hurt is a huge part of playing in the NBA.” The unfazed comedian went on to argue defrauding the league isn’t even the worst example of dishonesty from an ex-hooper. “Once you retire, you gotta make money somehow,” Noah explained. “I mean what’s more dishonest – stealing money from the health fund or Shaq claiming that Papa John’s is good pizza?” Noah isn’t alone in his Papa John’s assessment, even O’Neal’s former NBA teammate Robert Horry recently blasted the four-time champion for his Shaq-a-Roni pizza, complaining it “was cold and wasn’t good.” After critiquing Papa John’s, Noah highlighted an unexpected benefit of the arrests. If jail time is in store for any of the charged former NBA players, the basketball talent behind bars will get a big boost. “It’s gonna be great...

Durham, the attorney tapped by the Trump administration to oversee a special assessment of the Russian investigation, is now seeking an indictment of a cybersecurity lawyer accused of providing the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with a false statement. According to the New York Times, Durham is seeking the indictment for Michael Sussmann, a former U.S. prosecutor who is now a partner at the law firm, Perkins Coie. The firm previously represented the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in a case involving the 2016 Russian hack targeting its servers. John McAfee claimed the US government 'wants to make an example out of me' in a final plea before he was found hanging in his Spanish jail cell on Wednesday. The 75-year-old was found dead at the jail outside Barcelona just hours after a court approved his extradition to the US where he was wanted for tax evasion and fraud. Spanish authorities insist that there was no evidence of foul play, but McAfee's previous tweets that he would never take his own life 'a la Epstein' have fuelled conspiracy theories.  'I am content in here. I have friends. The food is good. All is well. Know that if I hang myself, a la Epstein, it will be no fault of mine,' McAfee tweeted on October 15.  McAfee was collared at Barcelona airport on October 3, about to board a flight to Istanbul with a British passport, at the request of the US Justice Department. During a court hearing last month, McAfee said that he would spend the rest of his life in jail if convicted in America. 'I am hoping...

When their careers are looked at closely, Mike Krzyzewski’s ranks ahead of John Wooden’s.  Mike Krzyzewski will walk off the court at the end of the 2021-2022 season, his 42nd at Duke, and head into retirement as the greatest coach in the history of college basketball. Even greater than UCLA’s John Wooden. No, Krzyzewski’s five national championships can’t compare to John Wooden’s 10. However, it’s critical to look at the numbers with proper context and perspective while considering the difference between the two eras. The 68-team tournament that we know only had 23 teams in three of Wooden’s years, 25 in six of the years and then 32 in his last year, 1975. And here’s the clincher, for most of those years, only one team from a conference could qualify for the tournament. In 1972 Maryland was 27-5 and ranked 14th in the final AP poll. In 1974 they were 23-5 and lost 103-100 in overtime to eventual national champion North Carolina State in the ACC Tournament title game. The Terrapins were fourth in the final AP poll. You guessed...
Savannah Rychcik April 27, 2021 0 Comments Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) is advising critics of police officers to “call a methhead” the next time they are in trouble. During a Fox News interview on Monday evening, Kennedy suggested most Americans do not believe the majority of police officers are racist and those that do should not look to them for help when they need it. “I’ve said it before, if you hate cops just because they’re cops, feel free to call a criminal, call a methhead the next time you get in trouble,” Kennedy said. He added, “I just do not accept, nor do I think most Americans accept, that most cops are bad people, or racist. They don’t get up every day and go into work hoping they can hurt somebody. Most of them get up every day and hope they can themselves come back home alive.” Watch Kennedy’s interview below: The senator noted police officers “have about 60 million encounters with Americans every year” and argued when someone is injured an investigation should occur before making assumptions. Kennedy continued by explaining “propositions” he...
The spurned lover of Alabama's married Secretary of State has released explicit audio and text messages describing in graphic detail their trysts - forcing him to abandon a possible run for the U.S. Senate, a day after he said her story was 'baseless'.  John Merrill, a Republican who has promoted himself as a 'family values' conservative, admitted on Thursday a three-year extramarital affair with Cesaire McPherson. McPherson, a 44-year-old legal assistant from Montgomery, revealed the affair to the online blog National File, saying it started in November 2017 and ended in November 2020. On Wednesday he told a local radio station her claims were 'baseless', describing her as a stalker who harassed him.  In one text message, she is begging him for sex, to which he replies: 'I can't talk anymore I will talk soon.'  She described in vivid detail her sexual encounters with the secretary of state in his marital bed. One at least one occasion, she recorded the two of them having sex. In the recording, McPherson asks Merrill if 'the last time that he had sex' was 'the...

Boehner recalled being told Trump would join them for the outing, and while he wasn’t sure what to think about that at the time, “his name was on the door of the club, and if he wanted to come out with us, none of us were going to say no.” Trump and Boehner were paired up for the day, but before the round got started, the future president approached one of Boehner’s staffers, John Criscuolo (whom the former speaker calls “BJ”), and asked for the names of the two insurance executives filling out the foursome. “I think they’re Joe...
