This year’s NFL draft has the chance to be unlike any other in recent years with a possible long wait before any of the players who throw, catch or run with the ball coming off the board. With no sure-fire quarterback prospects in the draft and several good-but-not-elite receiving prospects, the offensive linemen and defensive players should dominate the early picks with the top skill position player on The Athletic’s composite big board of 70 draft analysts being Ohio State receiver Garrett Wilson at No. 10. There has never been a draft that didn’t have a quarterback, receiver, running back or tight end taken in the top 10 picks in the history of the NFL, with a player from those positions going in the top five in all but one of the past 24 drafts. The only year in that span where it didn’t happen came in 2013 when four offensive linemen led by tackles Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel went in the top seven and the first skill position player taken was receiver Tavon Austin at No. 8 by...
The first round of the NBA Playoffs is a best-of-seven series. The NBA Playoffs have made some recent tweaks with the advent of the Play-In Tournament to determine the last two teams for each conference. Previously, the NBA used to have a best-of-five for the first round too. That led to some big upsets with only needing three wins to advance to the second round. That’s likely why the NBA didn’t stick with that format and kept things consistent with a best-of-seven format for every series. So if you’re watching the NBA Playoffs this year and see the Boston Celtics up 2-0 on Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets, they aren’t one game away from advancing to the second round. And, conversely, the Nets aren’t one game away from being swept out of the first round and ending a very disappointing season much earlier than everyone thought when the season started. Are the NBA Playoffs a best of 5 or 7?Playing a best-of-five series is just too small a sample size and leaves too much room for freaky things...
Gong Li Joins House of Cartier as Global Ambassador Gabby Petitos family and police urge her fiancé Brian Laundrie to come forward with any information about her disappearance © Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports Reports emerged earlier this week that the New Orleans Saints were dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak that involved at least six offensive assistant coaches, a team nutritionist and a player later said to be injured All-Pro wide receiver Michael Thomas testing positive for the virus coming off last Sunday's 38-3 victory over the Green Bay Packers.  The Saints confirmed Friday that seven coaches won't be available for this Sunday's matchup at the Carolina Panthers.  Offensive analyst Jim Chaney, offensive assistant Declan Doyle, special teams assistant Phil Galiano, senior offensive assistant/receivers coach Curtis Johnson, offensive line coach Brendan Nugent, run-game coordinator/tight ends coach Dan Roushar and running backs coach Joel Thomas will all miss Sunday's contest because of the league's COVID-19 health and safety protocols.  The Saints added their responsibilities "will be divided among the offensive staff."  Saints head coach Sean Payton said ahead of the season...

I love the NFL Draft. Honestly, I think I might prefer it to NFL games, which is so twisted I don’t care to analyze it. But after a few years of covering the 49ers, I think I have a nice read on what it is the team values in this free-for-all selection period. Will this seven-round mock draft be perfect? No. Will it help you understand the Niners and the draft process better? I sure hope so. First Round … Pick No. 3 Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State He’s the second-best quarterback in the class. Why wouldn’t the 49ers take him at No. 3? For all of the conjecture and nonsense, no one has answered that question for me. There are reasons for all three quarterbacks the Niners could take at No. 3. Mac Jones is accurate and Trey Lance is what would happen if science combined Josh Allen and Cam Newton. But what’s the knock on Fields? He played poorly against Northwestern in the Big Ten title game? I...
New York Jets: A seven-round, post-Sam Darnold mock draft By: Geoff Magliocchetti April 10, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditWith Sam Darnold having moved on, ESM envisions how the New York Jets’ replenished draft haul will look come April/May. Sam Darnold is gone, resolving the question of his New York Jets fate. Now, another rises in his place: now what? Following Darnold’s dealing to Carolina earlier this week, the Jets now hold ten picks in the 2021 NFL Draft, which begins on April 29. The last came from the Panthers along with two further choices in next year’s selections. With Darnold’s New York term ended, how should the Jets spend this surplus? In the immediate aftermath, it’s a terrific note on Douglas’ resume that he has earned the Jets double-figure offerings in a single draft. But draft day quantity, of course, is never a guarantee of quality. The Jets learned that lesson the hard way during the 2014 proceedings. Then-general manager John Idzik held a dozen picks in the final draft in New York, but...
JUSTIN ROSE is still the man to chase at the Masters, after another brilliant back nine surge at Augusta. The English golfer was in danger of disappearing into the pack after playing just first seven holes in three over par. 7 But a late burst of three birdies on four holes hoisted him back to the top of the leaderboard on seven under. That was the number Rose, 40, had started on, and the 2017 Masters runner-up is confident of going one better this time. He said: “I just had to be patient early on because I know this place always inspires me, and that good things would happen. “I was kind of waiting for that ‘boom moment ‘ that I got on day one with my eagle on eight. This time I made a great birdie on 13 and then threw in a couple more, so I’m still sitting pretty”. Rose showed his fighting qualities just when it looked like he would come crashing back to earth after his high flying feats in the first round of the Masters....
(CNN)Amid the azaleas and magnolias of Augusta National, it was a Rose who flourished during the first round of golf's Masters.Justin Rose raced into a four-shot lead on Thursday thanks to a superb back nine that saw him finish on seven-under par. Despite being two-over after seven holes, the Englishman rallied and hit an eagle on the eighth and seven birdies between the ninth and 17th to close four shots ahead of second-placed Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama. The first round also saw a number of pre-tournament contenders struggle. Defending champion Dustin Johnson carded a two-over 74, while last year's US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau finished on four-over. DeChambeau is tied with Rory McIlroy, whose task of completing a career grand slam with a Masters victory got off to a rocky start. Read More"I knew two-over through seven is not the end of the world, but also knew you're going in the wrong direction," Rose, twice a runner-up at the Masters, told reporters of his slow start. "You can't win the golf tournament today. Even with a 65, you can't...

The Terrapins (20-2, 16-1 Big Ten) can win the conference championship outright by ending the regular season with a win against Penn State (9-13, 6-12) at home on Saturday. Scott Taetsch/Getty Images Dwayne Haskins on December 15, 2019. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, former Washington Football Team quarterback Dwayne Haskins is meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday. It’s surprising news insofar as Haskins lasted less than two seasons with the team that drafted him, an extraordinarily short tenure for any player—much less a quarterback—drafted in the first round. Dwayne Haskins Selected No. 15 Overall in 2019Washington selected Haskins with the No. 15 overall pick in 2019 after a single sparkling season at Ohio State, when he threw 50 touchdown passes against only eight interceptions and averaged more than nine yards per pass attempt. That season he set 28 Ohio State records and added seven Big Ten Conference records, including single season passing yards (4,831) and total offensive yards (4,939). He also set a Big Ten record for most offensive player of the week awards (six), and won the Chicago Tribune Silver Football award as the best player in the Big Ten. The Washington Football Team cut ties with Dwayne Haskins on Monday afternoon, a mere 20 months after taking Haskins in the first round out of Ohio State. The release comes less than 24 hours after Haskins struggled and was benched for Washington in a Week 16 loss to the Panthers. In the past week, Haskins was involved with reported maskless attendance at a strip club, a $40K fine, being stripped of his WFT captaincy, being benched and now finally being released. Haskins officially goes on waivers following the Monday transaction. In a statement, Washington coach Ron Rivera said, “This afternoon I met with Dwayne and informed him that we would be releasing him. I told him that I believe it benefits both parties that we go our separate ways.” Here’s more about what transpired with Haskins that led to his release. MORE: Dwayne Haskins’ benching caps brutal week Why did the Washington release Dwayne Haskins? Haskins release follows a tumultuous week for the 2019 15th overall pick. (Reuters) - The Tampa Bay Lightning overcame the Dallas Stars -- and their own demons -- to hoist the Stanley Cup on Monday, putting to rest last year's painful, early exit from the National Hockey League's (NHL) playoffs. After winning a record-equaling 62 games last season, the team many had labeled among the greatest the sport had ever seen appeared all but assured the NHL's top prize. However, they were beaten 4-0 in the first round of the playoffs by the Columbus Blue Jackets and became the first winners of the Presidents’ Trophy, awarded to the team with the most points at the end of the regular season, swept in a best-of-seven opening-round playoff series. "It’s easy to say now but it is true, sometimes in failure you find success. It doesn’t come easy," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said in a TV interview. "People say, 'You never know when you’re going back, you never know when you’re going to go back.’ "But I truly believe it was the heartbreak we suffered that brought us here today.” Tampa Bay came up...
By TIM REYNOLDS, AP Basketball Writer LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The NBA playoff bracket is nearly set. Wednesday’s results filled in five of what were the six unknown matchups for Round 1 of the postseason, which starts next week at Walt Disney World. In the Western Conference: Houston and Oklahoma City will meet in the first round, meaning Rockets guard Russell Westbrook and Thunder guard Chris Paul get the chance to face their former teams. “It’ll be interesting,” Paul said. “Two teams that know a lot about each other. We’ll prepare, get ready and we’ll see what’s what.” Other West matchups that got clinched on Wednesday include the second-seeded Los Angeles Clippers against No. 7 Dallas, and No. 3 Denver against No. 6 Utah. In the East, Miami and Indiana will meet in the first round — after the clubs close the regular season on Friday against one another to decide which team will be seeded No. 4 and which will be No. 5. Indiana’s win over Houston on Wednesday set what had been the last two unknown...
The tournament qualifying round is over. The first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs begins on Tuesday, best-of-seven. Here’s a look at the matchups: Eastern Conference Philadelphia Flyers (1) over Montreal Canadiens (8) in six When is the last time the Flyers entered the playoffs with an asset in nets to the degree of Carter Hart? Ron Hextall in 1987, maybe? And what is the Rangers’ ideal second-line center — Kevin Hayes, by any other description — doing in Philadelphia anyway? The Canadiens are dangerous beyond Carey Price but Alain Vigneault has his team humming. Columbus Blue Jackets (7) over Tampa Bay Lightning (2) in six The size of the alleged and often-invoked “chip on their shoulders” won’t quite compensate for Tampa Bay’s injury issues, with Victor Hedman a question mark after going down over the weekend and the same for Steven Stamkos. Plus, Columbus is simply dialed in on who they are the same way the 2011-12 Rangers were under John Tortorella. New York Islanders (6) over Washington Capitals (3) in six When the test becomes one of...
