WHETHER you're budgeting for a regular manicure or pedicure or saving up to have one on special occasions, it's important to remember the gratuity. But how much is appropriate for a full spa day, and is it different from a quick polish touch-up? 1You may be overtipping or undertipping your nail technician at the salonCredit: Getty According to Sharon-Frances Moore, an etiquette expert who spoke to Reader's Digest, there have been shifts in the culture around tipping in recent years. Beginning in 2020, standard gratuities increased because of coronavirus-related factors, but now prices are falling back in many regions. "There was an increase of people over-tipping for services in industries across the board,” Moore said. “We are now seeing an adjustment back to standard tipping, which for a nail technician, [regardless] of the service, is around 15 to 20 percent.” But there are some instances where that's not the case. DEALING with neighbours can sometimes be a bit of a headache, but one’s woman neighbour seems to have taken the cake for this. Returning home from work, while nine months pregnant, an anonymous woman says that she found a new fence being put up in her garden, and when she asked her neighbour about this was told she needs to fork out around £2k for this. 1According to the anonymous woman the new fence was put up without her permissionCredit: Reddit Posting to Reddit’s home improvement forum the woman writes: “Back in early April my partner and I were outside doing yard work and ended up chatting with our next door neighbour about a potential fencing project we were thinking about doing.” Adding that this neighbour owns a landscaping company and does masonry and fencing too, and had previously completed a couple of projects for her. “When we were talking about this next project he said he would have to get back to us with a quote because he wasn't exactly sure how much it would cost for materials. In response to Katyal's comments, numerous commenters pointed out that while the Constitution includes the right to bear arms, it says zilch about abortion. "The right to bear arms is in the Constitution. The right to an abortion is not. So this might explain the weirdness," Dinesh D'Souza tweeted. "No, because the the right to keep and bear arms is actually in the Constitution. Abortion is not - which is the point," Kurt Schlichter tweeted. "It's only weird, my friend, if one disregards (a) the existence in the Constitution of a right to keep and bear arms and (b) the non-existence in that text of a right to elective abortion," law professor Rick Garnett tweeted. "I adore you Rick, and think we can disagree about this reasonably. There is no right to concealed carrying of firearms in the text of the Second Amendment. Even guns in the home is not in the text, let alone concealed carrying. And if we are just going by the text, there is ... of course no right to privacy in that text; or right...

Comedian Bob Saget spoke candidly about his struggles with depression in an interview just eight months before he died. The actor, known for his role as Danny Tanner in the ABC show Full House, told Radio Rahim in May 2021 how he had a big ego as he rose to fame - but it was really a façade to mask his feelings of depression. 'I would have been medicated in today's world in my 20s for extreme depression - like carrying it around all the time,' he told Rahim's Til This Day podcast in an episode that first premiered Wednesday. 'I would also act out and I had a very bad temper and I would yell - I never hit anybody, but I would yell,' Saget admitted. 'It was upsetting to do that. 'And I would do that in relationships, I would do it with my ex-wife, I did it in almost every relationship I've been in,' he said, adding: 'Sometimes, alcohol would add to that.' The only thing that kept him going at that time, Saget told Rahim, was...

An ailing San Francisco start-up has fired 250 of its 900 staff just five months after it was hailed for moving to a permanent four day working week.  Bolt, which manufactures payment software, announced the layoffs in an email sent to staffers on Wednesday  by new CEO Maju Kuruvilla, according to SFGate. He was vague about the exact reasons for the layoffs, hinted that Bolt was losing money, and didn't mention whether letting staff have a three day weekend was to blame.  'To laser focus on our core business and products, we will be prioritizing our roadmap and making several structural changes,' Kuruvilla wrote. 'Unfortunately, this includes reducing the size of our workforce and parting ways with some incredibly talented people on our team as of today.'  'The leadership team and I have made the decision to secure our financial position, extend our runway, and reach profitability with the money we have already raised,' he added.   Bolt CEO Maju Kuruvilla, pictured, laid off 250 of his firm's 900 staff Wednesday Bolt, a Silicon Valley-based tech startup that made headlines for moving to...
A 65-year-old Indiana pastor has stepped down from his role in the church after admitting he had an affair with a 16-year-old girl in front of his entire congregation.  Pastor John Lowe II stepped down from the New Life Christian Church after being confronted on stage by Bobi Gephart, a 43-year-old woman who came forward with a microphone to tell their church in Warsaw, Indiana, how he'd groomed her as a teen, starting when she was 16 - the legal age of consent in the state. Pastor Lowe II had just told the church that he 'sinned' 20 years ago by committing adultery, without mentioning how old the woman or girl was at the time.  He begged for the church's forgiveness, then received a standing ovation.  Bobi then stormed towards the stage with her husband, Nate, to say it 'was not just adultery' because she was so young at the time.  'For 27 years I lived in a prison... I lived in a prison of lies and shame. Lying to protect the Lowe family. For years I thought I was...

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Tuesday it is appealing the recent court ruling that put an end to President Joe Biden's mandate for masking during air travel. Biden's DOJ, however, said that it will be appealing only if the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concludes that it is necessary for the order to remain in place for the sake of public health. 'The Department continues to believe that the order requiring masking in the transportation corridor is a valid exercise of the authority Congress has given CDC to protect the public health,' the DOJ wrote in a Tuesday statement. 'That is an important authority the Department will continue to work to preserve.' Biden said travelers should decide for themselves whether or not to wear masks, minutes after stepping off Air Force One where the White House told staff and journalists they must continue to use face coverings a day after a judge struck the federal mandate. A string of U.S. airlines has already told passengers that masks are optional. Joe Biden's Justice Department announced that, pending CDC...

Ukrainian refugees have been pictured waiting at the United States southern border as it emerged that only 12 people fleeing Russia's war in Ukraine were admitted to American soil via the U.S. refugee program in March. U.S. President Joe Biden said last month that the United States would accept up to 100,000 Ukrainians fleeing the conflict that has wrought havoc in their home country. But lawmakers and advocates have urged the Democratic president to speed up refugee and visa processing to boost the pitifully low numbers of entrants as the war rages on.   More than 4 million people have fled Ukraine to neighboring countries since Russia invaded the country on Feb. 24, according to United Nations data, representing the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since World War Two.   Poland has already opened its borders to over two million refugees, with several other European countries taking in hundreds of thousands.   Hundreds of Ukrainians seeking refuge have been allowed to cross into the US from its southern border with Mexico, provided they are deemed to be 'particularly vulnerable'.  But a shockingly small number...
Luminola | E+ | Getty Images When you find yourself about a decade away from retirement, it might be time to evaluate whether that target-date fund you've been investing in still makes sense for you. Although these "set it and forget it" funds offer a way to put your savings on autopilot by gradually shifting over time to more conservative assets (bonds and, perhaps, cash) and away from riskier holdings (stocks), they may stop making sense at some point, depending on your situation. "When you're about 10 years away from retirement — say, in your mid-50s — you really need to be taking a holistic view and look at your whole financial picture," said certified financial planner Chris Mellone, a partner with VLP Financial Advisors in Vienna, Virginia.More from Your Money Your Future:Here's a look at more stories on how to manage, grow and protect your money for the years ahead. We all know about the importance of doing exercise, but many of us struggle to find the time or motivation. So what is the least amount you can do and still see appreciable changes? Twenty minutes a day? Ten minutes? One minute? How about three seconds. Yes, extraordinary as that sounds (and I must admit I was gobsmacked when I first read the research), a recent study has shown that doing just three seconds a day of resistance exercise — that's exercise where you use your muscles to lift or pull something against resistance, such as weights — can measurably improve strength. Pictured: Miss USA contestant Jean Wills admires strongman Bob McAine's flexed bicep in 1950 In the study, published last month in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, researchers from Japan and Australia asked 39 healthy volunteers to take part in an unusual exercise regimen, working the bicep muscle in the arm. With their elbows on a flat surface, one group had to raise a lever against resistance; a second group had to hold the lever up,...

New York (CNN Business)Up to 40 of SpaceX's Starlink satellites are expected to fall out of orbit thanks to some inopportune timing: The company launched the satellites directly into a solar storm.A batch of 49 Starlink internet satellites were on SpaceX's latest launch on February 3, and now the company is expecting to lose most of them because they hit a space weather event known as a geomagnetic storm. This event occurs when streams of charged particles, or solar winds, emitted from the sun interact with Earth's magnetic field. The energized particles can heat up the upper atmosphere, causing it to thicken. (Yes, there is still atmosphere in areas of outer space closest to home. The Earth's atmosphere fades out over thousands of miles.)In this case, the storm impacted the area of orbit where SpaceX's newest Starlink satellites were deployed, and it made the atmosphere dense enough that the satellites weren't able to maneuver their way up to their intended orbit. It's not clear how large the financial impact will be. SpaceX has not shared how much it costs to...
They may make up just one per cent of the world's tree species, but as it turns out a rare type of ancient tree could be the key to life for forests all over the world. That's because a new study suggests that old and ancient trees — which are often more than 10 to 20 times older than the average — help to sustain the trees around them by passing down a hardiness and experience in dealing with change. These golden genes radically change the genetic diversity and health of the surrounding trees which arrive later on, researchers say, which helps to stop forests dying out and allows them to thrive for thousands of years. The UK has more ancient trees than many other European countries, with more than 180,000 recorded to date.  To be classified as ancient it depends on the species — for beech this is from 225 years old, oaks from 400 years and yew 900 years.  Thanks to their genes, these outliers of the tree world weather whatever life throws at them, until one day their luck runs...

Shortly after laying down, he heard more loud noises, turned on his porch light before looking out his front door.  The next thing he saw was an injured elk, kicking on the front porch. A few weeks ago, one of my best friends let me know, via a tearful voice memo, that her partner had cheated. So I did what anyone would do: I came to her door with two bottles of wine, overpriced skincare we could try together, and the unbridled rage that comes with knowing someone you love deserves much better than what they’re getting. We ate carbs and stayed up late. I listened while she wallowed between bouts of sobs and screaming fits. When it came time for me to take the bus home, she gave me a big hug, squeezed hard, and said, “I know that wasn’t easy. Thank you for holding space for all my feelings.” I cooed out a luxurious “of course,” in the gentle timbre of an expensive Upper East Side therapist. But really I wondered: What in the Goop Gift Guide does “holding space” even mean? It wasn’t the first time I’d heard the phrase, but I’d never really thought about it. It meant basically nothing when I heard it at the end of yoga,...
(CNN)Jed Mottley played varsity football 28 years ago at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Arizona, when nothing screamed ultimate pride in your sport and school like a letterman jacket -- but Mottley didn't have one."I went down to the store that year and picked everything out," Mottley told CNN. "You had to kind of design the jacket yourself ... but I never saw the final product."When it came time to pick it up, Mottley's mother told him they didn't have the money to buy it."She was one of the greatest mothers you could ever ask for," Mottley said, "and she really did the best that she could. I mean, there were Christmases where there was IOUs under the Christmas tree, and if you've (never) had an IOU during Christmas ... you don't know what that feels like. We definitely had it rough, and she just always made it OK, but she was so loving."Hes on a mission to return dog tags found in a war zone to families. They’re being held in inhumane conditions,” Qiana Johnson, an organizer with the Black-led prison abolitionist grassroots group Harriet’s Wildest Dreams said to the small crowd. “Mayor after mayor, administration after administration—that jail has been the same.” She added: “The DC jail is 87 percent Black and the moment that a white person enters into that jail, they want to make change. Shame!” Johnson was referring to a new wave of public scrutiny and outcry over the jail’s dismal conditions that she and other activists say was prompted not by the longstanding mistreatment of people of color and efforts of...
U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, Democrat of Connecticut, is warning that "it is a matter of time before a less responsible follower of Donald Trump, or a less responsible Republican is going to pick up a weapon and kill someone." Congressman Himes, who sits on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, made those remarks Wednesday on MSNBC while talking with host Nicolle Wallace about Republican pushback against President Joe Biden's just-passed infrastructure bill. "What really scares me about this, and I'm not using that term loosely, is the language, the death threats," Rep. Himes said. "You know, the Republican party today is saying that you're destroying America, that the Republicans who voted for this," the infrastructure bill, "are 'traitors,' that it's 'communist.' Remember communists were generational enemies of the United States." "You're hearing this from somebody who lived through January 6th," he continued, referring to the insurrectionist attack on the U.S. Capitol. "It is a matter of time before a less responsible follower of Donald Trump, or a less responsible Republican is going to pick up a weapon and kill...
Gentefied creators Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez knew from the beginning that they didn’t want their show to feel in any way like “trauma porn.” Their debut season, which landed on Netflix last February, found moments of joy even as the Morales family struggled to save their restaurant in Los Angeles’ rapidly gentrifying Boyle Heights. The season’s closing chapter also presented an interesting challenge for the season to come: What does a more holistic, empathetic version of the stereotypically tragic deportation story actually look like? Last year we found the entire family scrambling to keep Morales patriarch Casimiro’s restaurant, Mama Fina’s, alive and in the family—a fight that continues into Season 2. But the finale dropped a major bomb when the beloved abuelo failed to show up at the hospital to meet his first great-grandchild. He was pulled over and detained due to an outstanding vandalism fine, and the episode ended with Pops in an ICE van. As they made plans for their half-hour comedy’s second season, first-gen writers Lemus and Chávez knew they wanted to depict “Pops”’ fight...
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A nearly non-profit group is taking note of what needs to be done and is beautifying our area, one cleanup at a time. The mother of the 15-year-old boy who dressed in a skirt and raped a female classmate in the girl's bathroom and was then charged with sexually assaulting another girl months later says her son doesn't identify as a female, and it wasn't just some disguise to slip into the girl's bathroom. Speaking exclusively with DailyMail.com, the mother, who asked not to be identified for the sake of her underage son, defended his actions as that of a heterosexual, hormonal teen who, in the case of the rape, had consensual sex with the girl twice before. 'He's a 15-year-old boy that wanted to have sex in the bathroom, with somebody that was willing,' she declared, sitting in an empty kitchen in her townhouse in Loudoun County, Virginia. 'And they're twisting this just enough to make it a political hot button issue.' The story exploded when Scott Smith, the father of the rape victim, was dragged out of a school board meeting with a bloodied mouth on June 22 after listening to school officials deny that a girl had been sexually assaulted...
This is the moment a drone pilot fitted a lightbulb using a quadcopter and a tiny action camera. For the stunt, set up by drone manufacturer DJI, a lightbulb was attached to a wine cork which had been stuck to the top of the aircraft.  A small action camera was attached to the rear of the drone - as they are not fitted with cameras showing the top of the device. The drone pilot fitted the lightbulb to the top of his machine using a wine cork and balanced that weight with a Insta360 Go2 action camera attached to the rear. The operator needed the camera to monitor the exact position of the bulb in comparison with the fitting When approaching the target, the operator had to be careful that the drone's rotors did not hit the light fitting which would send the device plummeting to the ground, possibly shattering a blade In the footage, the drone is piloted through a living room, dodging furniture before climbing towards the light fitting.  The Insta360 action camera on the back of the...

LEEDS forward Raphinha produced a sensational display on his Brazil debut as he laid on two assists in a 3-1 victory over Venezuela. The 24-year-old came on at half-time with Tite's side 1-0 down, but his substitution would turn the game on its head. 1Raphinha was superb as he came off the bench to change the gameCredit: EPA He delivered the corner for Marquinhos to convert from as Brazil levelled with 19 minutes remaining. The Central Intelligence Agency announced a reorganization on Thursday, putting a greater focus on China as tensions continue to rise between the world's biggest economy. The CIA's new 'China Mission Center' was unveiled as a report claimed that U.S. special operations forces and Marines had been secretly operating in Taiwan to train military forces there for the past year. Increasing tensions in the South Sea China have triggered warnings of war after sent air sorties and hostile rhetoric towards the self-governing island. CIA Director William Burns said the new unit was a result of strategic reviews that concentrated on 'China, technology, people, and partnerships.' 'CMC will further strengthen the agency's work on the most important geopolitical threat we face in the 21st century, an increasingly adversarial Chinese government,' he said. The reorganization marks an indication of how the Biden administration is reorienting to face the threat from China. And it comes amid growing concerns in particular about Taiwan and Beijing's threatening moves.  About two dozen members of U.S. special-operations and support troops are training small units of Taiwan’s ground forces,...
A MUM has admitted to “smashing up” her son’s XBox, causing outrage among fellow parents. But while others may have been shocked by her behaviour, the mum simply brushed it off as a “mummy moment.” 2A mum has revealed that she smashed up her son's XBox in a fit of rageCredit: Getty - Contributor 2She took to Facebook to ask if she could buy one off a friend Taking to Facebook, she posted: “Okay y’all. I had a ‘mommy moment’ about a month ago and smashed up my son’s XBox. “Love me or hate me for it. The question is… does anyone have they’d be willing to sell?” She added: “Now I feel bad. Help a mamma out.” The post has since been shared on Reddit where users have been left horrified by her behaviour. Commenting on the post, one wrote: “Sounds more like a toxic parent moment. Teaching kids it's okay to pitch a fit and be terrible to other people as long as you apologize for it.” Agreeing a second added: “So a "mommy moment" is not being...
Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman said that it's a 'privilege' that her abuser, Larry Nassar, is behind bars when so many survivors of sexual assault don't feel comfortable going to law enforecement for help. But while the 27-year-old is glad to see Nassar in jail, she is still calling for a full investigation into how the FBI, USA Gymnastics, and the United States Oympic and Paralympic Committees handled his behvaior, echoing testimony she made last week at the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearing into the FBI's botched probe of Nassar's abuse.  'What people often don't realize is abuse isn't just something you suffer in the moment. It can unfortunatley carry on with you for a really long time,' Raisman, who has six Olympic medals, said on Monday night's The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. 'And the way a survivor heals is linked to how their abuse is handled,' she added. 'So the power of one adult supporting a survivor and doing the right thing is so important.' Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman said that it's a 'privilege' that her abuser, Larry Nassar, is behind bars when so many...
The Australian government is prepared to lease nuclear submarines from the US while its own fleet is being built, Defence Minister Peter Dutton says. Last week, Australia entered into a surprise regional security pact with the US and the UK, known as AUKUS, which includes building US nuclear submarines but these will not be ready until the late 2030s. Asked on Sky News' Sunday Agenda program whether the government would consider leasing nuclear submarines in the interim, Mr Dutton said: 'The short answer is yes'. 'There is all of that discussion to take place in the next 12 to 18 months,' he said. Defence minister Peter Dutton (pictured) has confirmed the government will consider leasing nuclear submarines while new ones are built 'The talk that you can just buy a nuclear-powered submarine off the shelf, of course, is just not accurate or correct.' He said the Chinese are pumping out submarines, frigates and aircraft carriers at a record rate and so the rest of the world has stepped up its own production. 'That unfortunately is the dynamic we are...
West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice once again expressed frustration with those who are unwilling to get vaccinated against Covid-19. Speaking at a Covid briefing on Friday, the Republican said that the vaccine is “the only thing that I have left in my arsenal that will make this get better.” However, Justice reiterated that he will not issue a mandate for certain workers, as the federal government has done. “We should absolutely, without any question, in my opinion, not be mandating employees,” he said. “We’ll get through this,” he lated added. “Unfortunately, today we have an overwhelming amount of deaths: 74 people died. Seventy-four more people have died since Wednesday. And they’ll keep dying. That’s all there is to it. We just are going to keep lining the body bags up, and we’re going to line them up and line them up.” With just 40% of residents fully vaccinated, West Virginia lags behind much of the rest of the country, which has a 53% vaccination rate. “At the end of the day, we’re going to do one of two things,”...
As Ida tears through Louisiana, Gov. John Bel Edwards said first responders might be unable to get answer calls from stranded residents until  sunrise on Monday. Edwards told reporters he was aware of calls, particularly in the Jefferson Parish area in the southeast portion of the state hard hit by the storm, but they would likely have to wait until morning for search and rescue crews With sustained winds of more than 110mph, the conditions as of late Sunday, he said, were too treacherous.  'At the height of a hurricane you can't get first responders out because it's just simply too dangerous. The wind speeds don't allow for that,' Edwards told CNN. 'Just as soon as we can, we will be engaged in very robust search and rescue operations.' Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said Sunday that stranded residents due to Ida would have to wait until Monday morning for rescue, as conditions were too dangers for first responders As of 10pm on Sunday, Ida weakened to a Category 2 storm, but Edwards said the conditions were too...
