Since the first moon landing in 1969, it’s long been a goal to establish lunar colonies. After all, the moon has water we could use, subterranean caves we could inhabit, and now, it seems, a native way to generate a steady source of usable energy. With the upcoming Artemis project from NASA that aims to bring humans back to the satellite, it’s more important than ever to research and invest in resources for a long-term lunar stay. Luckily, scientists in China might have discovered something that can help. In a new study published Thursday in the journal Joule, the researchers found that chemical compounds in lunar soil are capable of transforming carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and hydrocarbons like methane that can be used as fuel. The team says these chemical compounds can act as catalysts—substances that speed up chemical reactions—to form an extraterrestrial photosynthesis system. This means that lunar soil along with sunlight could be used to support long-term lunar living for colonies. It goes back to one big challenge standing in the way of sustainable living outside...
A mother-of-two has issued a dire warning to sun-seekers after her love for the beach left her with skin cancer.  Shelley Devine, from Queensland's Sunshine Coast, is fighting stage four melanoma after excessive tanning during her 20s and 30s. The former flight attendant, now 52, was diagnosed last year and fears she will never experience the joy of becoming a grandmother. Shelley Devine, pictured on a beach holiday in Sri Lanka in 1994, used to spend her life in the sun Now the mum-of-two, pictured here with daughter Ruby, 22, is 'proud to be pale' and sun safe after being diagnosed with skin cancer Pictured is a large melanoma her old GP dismissed as a 'paint splatter' months before her terminal diagnosis She had never gone for a skin check in her younger years - and when she finally asked a doctor about a mole on her back, she was told it was a 'harmless paint splatter'. But the truth was terrifying.   'The edges of the mole were uneven, the colour was uneven and it was changing in size,'...
Seksan Mongkhonkhamsao | Moment | Getty Images When home improvement company Premium Service Brands wanted to coach franchisees in hiring and sales remotely during the coronavirus pandemic, it tried to replicate classroom learning via video call. But, says the company's Vice President of Learning Deb Jewell, people didn't always remember what they had learned online to translate it into real-life scenarios. Premium Service Brands owns brands including handyman business House Doctors and decorating firm 360 Painting and decided to create a virtual reality platform to provide a "hands-on" way for franchisees to practice what they'd learned, Jewell told CNBC via phone. Instead of spending over an hour on a video call with an accountant explaining a balance sheet, which some trainees found "pretty boring," the company created a financial simulation based on real-life scenarios. "They look at financial statements, they try to project the impact on their financials of decisions that they make … They then get a new round of financial statements that reflect that decision, and they go through several months of decision making in an afternoon," Jewell...
It was a clear, sunny, blue-sky day the day I learned I had breast cancer. The brutally unexpected so often seems to happen on such days. For a few months over the past summer, I had an intermittent sharp pain under my left breast, as if the wire from a bra was cutting in. Sometimes it woke me at night, sometimes it disappeared for days. But there was no lump or general tenderness.  When I mentioned the pain to anyone, they would say: ‘Well at least it’s not breast cancer because you don’t get a pain with breast cancer.’ But then I read about how Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding, who sadly died of breast cancer in September, experienced a pain which she attributed to a guitar strap rubbing her breast. It made me think that I should get my pain investigated – but not right then. At some point. In the future. It was a clear, sunny, blue-sky day the day I learned I had breast cancer. The brutally unexpected so often seems to happen on such days I...

Controversial American hammer thrower Gwen Berry failed to medal in the finals of the Tokyo Games on Tuesday, much to the delight of her conservative critics. 'Now we can get back to rooting for people who actually want to be part of Team USA,' one critic tweeted about Berry, who drew criticism in June by turning away from the American flag on the podium during the national anthem at the US Olympic trials. On Tuesday, the 32-year-old finished 11th out of 12 with a distance of 71.35 meters while Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk cruised to her third straight Olympic gold medal with a toss of 78.48.  'Karma,' wrote another critic. The Department of Justice on Friday said former President Trump’s tax returns must be released by the IRS to the House Ways and Means Committee. The DOJ's Office of Legal Counsel said the committee – which first requested the returns over two years ago – showed "sufficient reasons" to validate its bid to review the former president’s taxes. FORMER TRUMP ADVISER TOM BARRACK RELEASED ON $250M BAIL "The Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has invoked sufficient reasons for requesting the former President’s tax information," Dawn Johnsen, acting assistant attorney general wrote in an opinion Friday. "Under section 6103(f)(1), Treasury must furnish the information to the Committee." The Office of Legal Counsel argued that when a congressional committee requests access to a president’s tax returns, "the executive branch should conclude that the request lacks a legitimate legislative purpose only in exceptional circumstances." The opinion by the DOJ is a reversal of stance from the Trump administration’s 2019 judgment, which alleged the congressional committee lacked legitimate justification for reviewing the tax returns. Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., applauded...
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was accused of wanting to turn NYC into dystopian horror film The Purge after claiming crime could be reduced by axing prisons.    The Democrat Representative - whose district covers part of the Bronx and Queens - claims says more hospital and counseling services to criminals to treat mentally ill criminals could cut violent crime. But her suggestion horrified one other NYC representative. 'If AOC had her way . . . there'd be no jails, no arrests, no police (except her private security). New York City would be turned into a 24/7 movie set for "The Purge,"' Staten Island Republican Rep. Nicole Malliotakis said in a tweet. 'It's ludicrous to say this at a time when almost every category of major crime is up in our city and criminals are back onto our streets immediately after being arrested to strike again. She has no regard for public safety, no respect for law enforcement and is a hypocrite because she walks around with private security.' In the fictional movie, The Purge, an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government...
Moody topless selfies, sweet family portraits and the odd game day shot have certainly proved a winning formula for footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who now boasts a staggering half a billion followers on social media. On Instagram, where he has 261 million followers, the Portuguese player is one of the most followed people in the world. On Facebook, his page has almost 125 million likes and about 147 million followers while on Twitter, there are 91 million people following him. Even on YouTube, with a channel that has been dormant for four years, he exceeds a million. According to Forbes, Ronaldo has the second-highest income from Instagram-related revenue at £16.8million per year, with each almost-daily post continually racking up millions of likes. In January 2020, they estimated he nets £721,805 per post.  As well as his lauded prowess on the pitch, the father-of-four, who celebrated his 36th birthday last week, keeps fans entertained online with regular posts showing off his luxury lifestyle and family time with girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez. The couple are parents to daughter Alana Martina, three, while Ronaldo is father...
Although Ubisoft Montreal nerfed Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s bird pal in the Viking era game, Sýnin the raven is pretty cool. But there is one thing that can make it better: Turn it into a pigeon. I know what you’re thinking. A pigeon? How is that better than a raven? I guess this is not applicable to all, but I have a real fondness for the birds. I like ravens, too — but I don’t see them all too often. But there’s a family of pigeons that live in my neighbor’s gutters, and I enjoy listening to their muffled coos when walking my dog. That’s why I was particularly excited to add this majestic bird to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. And you can do it, too. Image: Ubisoft Montreal/Ubisoft via News Brig To unlock the pigeon, you have to own Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, of course, and also be an Amazon Prime subscriber. On the Prime Gaming page, there’s a link to claim the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Carolingian Dynasty Gear Pack, which includes...
A federal judge on Friday ruled that two Massachusetts men can be legally extradited to Japan to face charges they helped former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn flee the country in a box and on a private jet. US Magistrate Judge Donald Cabell in Boston rejected the arguments against extradition by US Army Special Forces veteran Michael Taylor and his son, Peter Taylor, and certified the case for the US secretary of state to evaluate. The Taylors’ lawyers had argued they could not be extradited because Japanese penal code does not make it a crime to help someone “bail jump,” and that they could only be charged if Japanese authorities were already pursuing Ghosn pre-escape. But Cabell rejected that argument, saying their conduct “literally brings them squarely within the purview” of the law, which makes it a crime to harbor or enable the escape of someone like Ghosn who has committed a crime. Lawyers for the Taylors did not immediately respond to a request for comment. US prosecutors say the Taylors facilitated “one of the most brazen and well-orchestrated escape acts...
An Amazon delivery might not be that exciting for you, but your cat is probably thrilled to be getting a new cardboard home. Amazon has made that sentiment official with new eco-friendly boxes that can be recycled into cat condos, forts and even a putt-putt golf windmill. It’s all part of the company’s “less packaging, more smiles” program aimed at reducing cardboard consumption. Amazon noted that over the years, it has reduced packaging weight by 33 percent, eliminating the equivalent of about 1.5 billion boxes and reducing its carbon footprint. “Inventing and innovating in new types of packaging is one of the many actions we are taking as part of the climate pledge — our commitment to become net-zero carbon by 2040 — 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement,” Amazon VP Kim Houchens told USA Today.
Face masks are important. But it’s also important to know there is an alternative. While some prefer to opt for face masks with ties, the balaclava or neck gaiter is another option for a comfortable face covering. Neck gaiters are great for wearing around your neck on socially distanced walks, hikes, bike rides, and more, and are easy to pull up over your nose and mouth when you need them. Because brands have been making them for years, they come in so many different styles already, from sweat wicking ones, to UV protecting ones, and plenty of designs. As an anchor on “Good Day New York,” Lori Stokes typically has access to a professional glam team — but these aren’t typical times. The Fox 5 star told Page Six Style that since lockdown began back in March, she’s been taking her top-to-toe beauty regimen into her own hands, including applying her own relaxer at home — something she first did decades ago. “I knew how to do relaxers because when I worked in Illinois [at WCIA in the mid-1980s], there were no salons that knew how to handle textured hair,” Stokes recalled. “So I started learning how to do my own relaxer. That was a throwback for me during quarantine.” In addition to taking boxed hair color from the drugstore for a spin (“I put my plastic gloves on and went to work,” she joked), Stokes has also been relying on press-on nails in neutral colors in place of professional manicures. “But they’re coming off and it’s pretty raggedy right now,” she admitted. One area where the TV journalist needs no help whatsoever, though, is skincare. Stokes says...
