Covid sufferers have a higher risk of developing brain fog, seizures and dementia, research suggests. Experts studied over 1.25million people with Covid and found new diagnoses of psychosis, dementia, seizures and brain fog were more common during the two years after having the virus than with other respiratory infections like the flu. Children saw fewer increases in most conditions than adults, apart from seizures and psychosis. There was also a higher risk of anxiety and depression in adults – but this fell within two months. Lead author Professor Paul Harrison, from the University of Oxford, said the study showed that brain conditions linked to Covid may far outlast the pandemic. He called for research into 'what can be done to prevent or treat these conditions'. But Professor...

MANCHESTER UNITED could be about to give up on signing Ajax star Antony, according to reports. Boss Erik ten Hag sees the Brazilian as a major target after working with him in Amsterdam last term. 2Antony's move to Man United could be offCredit: Getty United have so far been priced out of a move, with the Eredivisie champions demanding £68million for their winger's signature. According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils will give up on signing him this year... unless one of two factors come into play. They claim that Antony handing in a transfer request could tempt them back into negotiations. With the 22-year-old under contract until 2025, Ajax are under no pressure to sell this summer. In recent years, nearly half of all states have created publicly funded private K-12 tuition plans, collectively known as school vouchers. This summer, advocates of these plans are pushing to expand their reach, boosted by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Carson v. Makin that states permitting vouchers may not exclude religious schools. Arizona just expanded its already large voucher program; in Michigan, former U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and allies have proposed a voucher scheme modeled on plans elsewhere. In June, GOP supporters in Congress reintroduced legislation to create federal funding for voucher programs. Article continues after advertisement Vouchers are dangerous to American education. They promise an all-too-simple solution to tough problems like unequal access to high-quality schools, segregation and even school safety. In small doses, years ago, vouchers seemed like they might work, but as more states have created more and larger voucher programs, experts like me have learned enough to say that these programs on balance can severely hinder academic growth — especially for vulnerable kids. I am an education policy professor who has spent almost two decades studying programs like these, and trying to...
Families of the victims of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas are frustrated with the delays getting information about the attack, with government agencies taking weeks to release video evidence and interim findings, and a key report being published only in English. The population of Uvalde, Texas has been nearly 80 percent Hispanic for decades, and Spanish is the primary language for many families of the 19 children and two teachers who were killed in the May 24 attack. So when a Texas House investigative committee released their interim report on this weekend only in English, family members were “visibly upset” at the latest obstacle to getting information. The report describes “systemic failures and egregious poor decision making” that contributed to the tragedy that day, including nearly 400 law enforcement officers who were on the scene but did not engage with the shooter for more than an hour, due in large part to the failure to follow incident command system procedures, in contravention to police training. CNN and other networks aired a press conference from Uvalde...

Members of the Central Brooklyn Food Cooperative doing outreach work. | Rae Gomes Eric Adams has already talked more about what he calls the city’s “food apartheid” than any mayor before him, arguing that many residents in Black communities are dying too soon because of a lack of access to healthy food. It’s an issue he says is personal for him, after growing up in Central Brooklyn and Southeast Queens — areas that have long been neglected by supermarkets — and as he credits his own turn to a (mostly) vegan diet with saving his life. In his first two months in office, the mayor signed two executive orders upgrading standards for city agencies’ food handouts and advertisements, expanded vegan options in public schools, and launched six “plant-based lifestyle” medicine clinics across the city.

That player is the Denver Broncos newly acquired Super Bowl champion quarterback, Russell Wilson. It is easy for one to agree or disagree with these assertions, but you cannot deny the physical build between the two, spawning most comparisons from the start. Murray and Wilson both teeter close to the 6-foot height mark. They both weigh in between 210, and 215 pounds, considered by many as undersized for their position. Though when pressure builds, they are both known to scramble. On top of this, they were both drafted into Major League Baseball, and are known to have...

It would take many lifetimes to exhaust all the possibilities of plant selection and design options for our gardens. Take kinetic plants, for example. These are species that sway in the wind or even in a mild breeze. They include ornamental grasses, sedges, and rushes. Butterfly bushes (Buddleja spp.) and wand flowers (Gaura/Oenothera linheimeri) possess this quality as well. Many are extremely drought tolerant while others can live on the edge of a pond and yet, planted in the garden, may require only occasional summer water.  San Marcos Growers lists 91 different types of ornamental grasses alone and Monrovia Nursery lists 156 options (monrovia.com/shop/by-type/grasses.html) under what they broadly classify as grasses. The reason for Monrovia’s more extensive list is that bamboos, which are members of the grass family, and sedges and rushes which are not grasses but resemble them in certain respects, make Monrovia’s list, as do mondo grass and liriope, which actually belong to the lily family. Do your two left feet put you to shame? Blame it on your rhythmically-challenged ancestors! Having good rhythm and being able to move in time to the beat is at least in part explained by our genes, a study has found. Researchers at the University of Melbourne have identified 69 different genetic variants linked with the ability to keep in time to a beat. Many of these genes were expressed in the brain, including some also linked to depression, schizophrenia, and developmental delay. The research, published today in Nature Human Behaviour, states that these links suggest rhythm has a biological connection with brain development. Musicians involved in the study tended to have more of these genetic variants suggesting they're important for broader musicality. Photo by Greg Nash-Pool/Getty Images Rep. Billy Long (R-MO) pinned at least some of the blame for school shootings on abortion. Appearing on 93.9 The Eagle in Columbia, Missouri on Wednesday, Long reacted to last week’s mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers. In the wake of that massacre, as well as a racially-motivated killing spree less than two weeks prior, some are calling for increased restrictions on certain firearms. Long reacted to the killings by saying abortion has contributed to the mindset that leads to mass shootings. Host Branden Rathert began the interview by asking Long, “Is there any appetite in D.C. amongst Republicans to look at doing some things differently as it relates to guns, Congressman?” Long replied that there had been a Zoom called on the Senate side of the debate that yielded little. He said gun control isn’t the solution. “Unfortunately, they’re trying to blame inanimate objects for all of these tragedies, and there’s so many things that can be done,” he said, claiming that...
ENDING a relationship is never an easy task, but if you're not happy then sometimes it just has to be done. These feelings certainly don’t mean that your relationship is doomed. However, in the wake of these feelings miscommunications may develop. Susanna says these issues can be difficult to discuss with your partner: “Sharing that much uncertainty with a loved one is a very high-risk strategy as threats of abandonment have a habit of raising the emotional temperature between a couple to boiling point.” Discussing any issues you have in your relationship though can help you work out if they can be fixed, or if you are perhaps just incompatible on certain things. Jerking awake one night at 3am into an inhospitable but familiar darkness I felt — finally — at the end of my tether.  Like so many women before me, I had no idea that these problems might be linked to fluctuating hormones, writes MARIELLA FROSTRUP For two years I'd been plagued with insomnia; endless nights spent lying there with my heart pounding, my eyes feeling wide open even when closed, moving rapidly beneath my eyelids. During the day I was exhausted, anxious, stressed and bad-tempered. I hadn't felt like 'myself' for so long that I could hardly remember who the real me was. Yet because my periods hadn't entirely stopped, I — like so many women before me — had no idea that these problems might be linked to fluctuating hormones.  Besides, I'd had the grand sum of just two hot flushes. The Democrats are in trouble months away from the midterm elections. Historical trends don’t favor them. Since 1938, the president’s party has lost House seats in all but two such cycles. Neither do the polls. The generic congressional ballot has Republicans up by 4 percentage points in the RealClearPolitics polling average. President Joe Biden’s approval rating stands at just 41.1% in the same average of polls, with 54% disapproving. Some individual surveys have Biden’s job approval in the 30s. In an election likely to be a referendum, those are not favorable conditions for down-ballot Democrats. Finally, the Democrats' majorities are so small (50-50 in the Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris’s tiebreaking vote, 221-209 in the House) that it won’t take a wave election, such as 1994 or 2010, to lose them. Democrats have a plan to defy all these headwinds: message their way out of it. Biden himself is central to this strategy. He has embarked on a national tour selling the $1.2 trillion infrastructure law. In these speeches, he promotes tangible local projects and the law's funds wherever he...
Share this: According to a just released poll by the Siena College Research Institute, Governor Hochul’s overall job performance rating is negative 36-57%, which is down from 43-53% just last month. As it is already expected to be a tough election year nationally for Democrats, this gives Republicans even more hope here in deep blue New York. Indeed, the President’s political party almost always loses seats in Congress in mid-term elections. In modern mid-terms the party whose President sits in the White House have lost an average of thirty seats in the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. The extent of these losses is dependent on the Presidents’ popularity and the state of the economy. Today, Biden’s ratings are in the toilet and the state of the economy is miserable with soaring inflation hitting Americans where it hurts most- in their wallets and purses. However, in addition to these factors there are ever increasing crime rates, with many placing the blame on Democrat policies. We expect that this anti-Democrat mood will trickle down to state and local elections as well....

Pacific Gas & Electric Company will pay more than $55 million to settle criminal cases involving two Northern California wildfires that burned more than 1 million acres — an area larger than Rhode Island. District attorneys of six counties announced the settlement today in last year’s Dixie Fire and the 2019 Kincade Fire, which both started because of faulty equipment in areas parched by the state’s lengthy drought, according to media reports. The Dixie Fire became the largest wildfire in history, and it was the first to burn across the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It’s hard to tell if the Nets are championship contenders or pretenders. The truth, as head coach Steve Nash likes to say, is probably somewhere in the middle. When the Nets took the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks to overtime just to fall short by one point, they looked like undoubted contenders. And when they sleepwalked through a disappointing 122-115 loss in Atlanta despite a career-high 55 points from Kevin Durant — a game with play-in tournament seeding implications, a must-win for all intents and purposes — the Nets looked more like a team with no business being named next to the Bucks and other teams atop the Eastern Conference. With no Goran Dragic (health and safety protocols), no Bruce Brown (flu) and no Seth Curry (ankle), the Nets needed to play almost perfect basketball. They needed Nash to out-coach Nate McMillan. They needed Kyrie Irving to play like a $140 million player. They needed Patty Mills to play like an Olympic bronze medalist. And they needed to punch the Hawks in the mouth on their own home floor. None of...

Both these guys will be headed to Cooperstown down the road, but wouldn’t it be sweet if they entered the Hall of Fame together? That’s exactly what could happen if the two decide to call it a career at the end of the season.Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina should retire together after 2022The wide expectation is that this will be the final campaigns for both Pujols and Molina. Pujols is 42 years old and Molina is 39. While the thought of these two playing forever for St. Louis sounds nice, they’re not getting any younger and they’ve certainly lost many steps. Spelunking is finally going out of this world. Once we send astronauts back to the moon this decade, there will be an enormous interest to explore lunar caverns and uncover the mysteries they bear. But it’s also paramount we make these journeys safe for any human brave enough to plunge into these deep, dark depths. Thanks to satellite imagery, scientists intimately know where every nook and cranny on the moon’s surface is located. Our understanding of the interiority of those spaces is much murkier. What we do know is that there are “pits” or “skylights” that lead to ancient lava tubes leftover from when the moon used to boast volcanic activity billions of years ago. It’s believed these lava tubes may form a vast lattice of caverns and tunnels unexplored by previous space missions. To uncover these subterranean tunnels, the European Space Agency may have just the tools: deploy two robots named RoboCrane and DAEDALUS. If greenlighted, the combination of these two bots could help comprise the first extraterrestrial spelunking mission in history. The mission proposal calls for ESA...
