The San Francisco Giants designated veteran left-handed pitcher Jake McGee for assignment. The San Francisco Giants were looking to replicate the success they had last season. So far, they are 41-41 entering July 9. Ahead of their game against the rival San Diego Padres, the Giants made a flurry of roster moves, one of which spells the end of a veteran pitcher out of the bullpen. Left-handed pitcher Jake McGee was designated for assignment by the Giants, ending his tenure with the team after signing with them ahead of the 2020 season. The news was confirmed by FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray. In additional moves, the Giants reinstated outfielder Luis Gonzalez from the 10-day injured list, placed right-handed pitcher Zack Littell on the 15-day injured list, and recalled right-hander Yunior Marte from Triple-A Sacramento. CINCINNATI – Dominic Smith watched old videos alongside Mets hitting coaches Eric Chavez and Jeremy Barnes and found a critical ingredient to his offensive success that had been missing to start the year. Over the past couple of weeks, Smith made an adjustment to his hitting mechanics that has allowed him to drive the ball with more power. He opened up his stance at the plate so that his legs are farther apart from each other, his hips are squared lower, and his right foot is slightly pointed out. “That’s something that when I went really well, that’s what I did,” Smith said. “I felt like I was getting beat inside and I was flying open early and I kind of closed myself off. So I just got back to being comfortable, opened up and now I’m able to be in my hips more and stay in that back side. It’s working out well and I’m able to swing at what I want to.” Smith’s open stance has helped him hit the ball with more authority, and it’s translated to...
Manny Banuelos finally making his Yankees debut 14 years after he was signed as a phenom out of his native Mexico was one of the best stories of the early Yankees season, but the 31-year-old’s time with the Bombers has come to an end again — for now. The lefty was designated for assignment before Tuesday night’s game to make room for J.P. Sears, who made a spot start. “It was difficult,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Obviously, it’s a numbers game. “One of the things that made it difficult on top of who the person he is and the story, and how much it’s been a joy to be around him every day and what he’s brought to the field every day, is we really think he can pitch and he hasn’t got a lot of opportunities.” Banuelos, who was seen as multiple-inning protection for the starters, made just three appearances. That’s mostly because the Yankees starters were going deep into games, not a reflection of him. He pitched to a 2.16 ERA with eight strikeouts and three walks....
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The San Francisco Giants acquired Willie Calhoun on Thursday, sending outfielder Steven Duggar to Texas for the outfielder who was the main return for the Rangers when they traded pitcher Yu Darvish five years ago. San Francisco also receives cash in the deal. It will be a homecoming for Calhoun, and a move he requested after being sent to the minors on May 1. The 27-year-old was born in the East Bay city of Vallejo and attended Benicia High School. Calhoun, 27, has spent all five-plus years of his major league career with the Rangers. The left-handed hitter had a .136 average with a homer and two RBIs over 18 big league games this year. He was optioned to Triple-A on May 1, and just more than a month later was designated for assignment and then assigned outright to Round Rock, where he hit .217 with five homers in 22 games. Duggar, 28, was activated from the 60-day injured list. The Rangers made room on their 40-man roster when right-hander Spencer Patton was...
Clint Frazier fit the mold of what the Chicago Cubs roster could have used this year. For a big-league roster that needs an overhaul to become a contender again, Frazier represented upside. When the Cubs signed the outfielder to a one-year deal in December, Frazier figured to be in the mix for playing time, a chance for the organization to unlock his full potential and consistency that had evaded the 2013 first-round pick (fifth overall). Aside from Frazier’s age (27), he would be under team control through 2024 because of his remaining arbitration years. If the Cubs found something in Frazier, he would provide low-cost offense and allow them to address other lineup needs. Frazier’s time Chicago didn’t play out that way, however. The Cubs designated Frazier for assignment before Friday’s series opener against his former team, the New York Yankees. It was a corresponding 40-man roster move for right-hander Chris Martin to come off the restricted list. Frazier hit .216 with three doubles, no home runs, one RBI, a .356 on-base percentage and 87 OPS+ in 19 games with...

The Chicago White Sox designated starter Dallas Keuchel for assignment, the team announced Saturday. Keuchel had a 2-5 record and a 7.88 ERA with 20 strikeouts in eight starts this season. The left-hander, who won the American League Cy Young Award in 2015 with the Houston Astros, was a major addition during the 2019 offseason, agreeing to a three-year, $55.5 million deal. The contract included a team option for 2023. Keuchel went 17-16 with a 4.79 ERA in 51 appearances (49 starts) for the Sox. He finished fifth in the American League Cy Young voting in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, going 6-2 with a 1.99 ERA in 11 starts. Keuchel was 9-9 with a 5.28 ERA in 32 outings (30 starts) last season and was placed on the taxi squad for the playoffs. Keuchel this month had strong outings at Boston (two runs in six innings on May 8) and against the New York Yankees (five shutout innings on May 14) before struggling against the Yankees on May 21 at Yankee Stadium (six runs in four innings) and Thursday against...
The Atlanta Braves made multiple roster moves on Tuesday, none bigger than designating struggling hurler Sean Newcomb for assignment.  Things just haven’t been going according to plan for the Atlanta Braves and left-handed hurler Sean Newcomb. Newcomb has been downright awful in 2022 and the reigning World Series champs have had enough. It was just announced that the Braves have designated Newcomb for assignment, bringing an end to this experiment. Newcomb once had plenty of promise with the club, but fans have been calling for him to be sent packing for a while now. The #Braves today recalled RHP Touki Toussaint and LHP Dylan Lee to Atlanta, designated LHP Sean Newcomb for assignment and optioned Huascar Ynoa to Triple-A Gwinnett following last night’s game. — Atlanta Braves (@Braves) April 19, 2022 Sean Newcomb has struggled mightily with the Braves Newcomb had made three appearances for Atlanta this year, not lasting more than 2.2 innings in any of them. On the year, he had recorded five innings of work, giving up four earned runs. That’s a 7.20 ERA for those of...
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Right-hander Kohei Arihara was designated for assignment Sunday by the Texas Rangers, who signed the Japanese pitcher to a two-year contract last winter. The move with Arihara before the series finale against the Chicago White Sox cleared a spot on the 40-man roster for the Rangers to reinstate right-hander Mike Foltynewicz from the COVID-related injury list. Arihara is 2-4 with a 6.64 ERA in 10 starts this season. He has made three starts since returning from the injured list after having surgery in May for an aneurysm in his throwing shoulder. He has made three starts since being activated from the IL on Sept. 1, giving up six runs in four-plus innings Wednesday against Houston. Texas could assign Arihara outright to the minors if he clears waivers. He could then be invited to spring training as a non-roster player with the chance to compete for a spot in the starting rotation. The 29-year-old Arihara pitched six years with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan’s Pacific League before signing a $6.2 million contract...

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Veteran outfielder Adam Eaton has been designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels after 25 games with the club. The Angels made the move Sunday in the latest indication the injury-plagued team has decided to focus on the future with little hope of ending its six-year playoff drought this season. Los Angeles (58-60) also recalled right-hander James Hoyt from Triple-A Salt Lake. Eaton batted .200 with one homer and two RBIs for the Angels, getting 13 hits and striking out 16 times. Los Angeles signed the 10-year veteran last month after the White Sox released him. The Angels acquired Eaton to play right field while they were short-handed in the outfield with injuries to Mike Trout and Justin Upton. Los Angeles then recalled top prospects Jo Adell and Brandon Marsh, eliminating its need for a veteran outfielder. Eaton also made his major league pitching debut for the Angels, throwing 21 pitches in a scoreless two-hit inning to wrap up a blowout loss to Colorado last month. Hoyt is 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA in seven...
Left-handed starter Scott Kazmir was designed for assignment by the Giants on Saturday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. In a spot start Friday, Kazmir allowed three hits and two earned runs in two innings in what became an 8-5 Giants win over the Chicago Cubs. In three appearances for the Giants this season, including two starts, Kazmir had an 0-1 record and a 6.43 ERA in 7.0 innings. He also had seven strikeouts and just one walk. Within seven days, Kazmir, 37, can either be traded or placed on irrevocable outright waivers. If Kazmir clears waivers, he may be sent to Triple-A Sacramento or be released. The Giants had not announced a corresponding move as of early Saturday afternoon. They play the Cubs at 4:15 p.m. in the third game of a four-game series at Oracle Park. With Logan Webb sidelined due to a right shoulder strain, the Giants on Friday turned to Kazmir, who was activated from the restricted list. Kazmir has been on the restricted list since Monday so he could go to Houston...
