The comparison is striking. The simple black turtleneck. The pared-down make-up. The gaze, staring boldly into the camera. No, not the Duchess of Sussex, pictured for her latest interview with a U.S. magazine; but Princess Diana, photographed by Patrick Demarchelier in the autumn of 1991 for Vogue, and later used on the cover of a re-issue of Andrew Morton’s book Diana: Her True Story. It can’t possibly be intentional, can it? After all, today marks 25 years since Diana’s tragic death in Paris, at the age of 36. Surely not even Meghan, however subconsciously, would seek to troll the Royal Family on such a solemn occasion. Yet there it is. And let’s face it, she’s done it before. Who could forget the timing of the Oprah Winfrey interview, aired only a month before the Duke of Edinburgh passed away in April 2021? Nothing and no one, not even the ailing health of Her Majesty’s consort of 70 years, could be allowed to stand in the way of Meghan speaking her famous truth. In truth, though, the similarities are only superficial....

After being approached by Zuckerberg's security manager following his tragic death, Medeiros' family was offered money to support funeral expenses. They declined. But the next morning, they received a check for $7,500 as a contribution 'given by Mark [Zuckerberg] and Priscilla [Chan].' The family are now suing the Zuckerberg-owned company,...

A 28-year-old man in Los Angeles died in his home and was not found until five days after his death when a friend checked his apartment.  Dominic Green was a contract worker for the Los Angeles Department of Public Health, helping the city government track COVID-19 cases.  Green worked for Healthcare Staffing Professionals, a company that has provided Los Angeles County with nearly 1,000 workers since the pandemic began, with 80% working from home.  'Good afternoon everyone, my shift has ended,' emailed Green one afternoon last winter as his shift ended at 4.30 p.m.  Green had never met any of his colleagues because his work was remote, and one supervisor told his father 'We really don't know people by anything except the work that they do.'  Five days later, his parents, Joseph and Jeannine, checked his cellphone plan and realized he had not used it.  They asked a family friend in the area to check on him, where he was found lying on his bed, motionless.  Dominic Green, 28, was working as an epidemiologist in Los Angeles when he died...
“Any Other Family” by Eleanor Brown (G. P. Putnam’s Sons) What does it mean to be a family? That’s the central question explored in Eleanor Brown’s new novel, “Any Other Family.” Featuring three sets of parents who between them have adopted four biological siblings from the same mother, the story is set during a two-week vacation in Aspen, Colorado. Tabitha, the chief architect of the new family and adoptive mother to twins Tate and Taylor, is determined to create a stable environment for the children. They all live relatively near one another and have Sunday family dinners as well as holiday celebrations together. This is their first two-week vacation as a family, though, and there’s tension from the start. Elizabeth, the youngest of the moms with the youngest adopted daughter, Violet, exhibits classic signs of postpartum depression. Her journey during the novel involves realizing that it can happen to adoptive moms just as readily as moms who have given birth. After years of unsuccessful fertility treatments, she and her husband, John, accidentally met Tabitha (quite literally, when Elizabeth...

The other is Rajapaksa’s chosen prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, a seasoned opposition politician who was brought in to steer the country out of the abyss. On Saturday, massive crowds descended on the capital, Colombo, broke into Rajapaksa’s official residence and occupied his seaside office. Hours later, as leaders of political parties in Parliament called for both leaders to step down, protesters also stormed Wickremesinghe’s residence and set it on fire. The culmination of monthslong protests on Saturday led to both of them agreeing to step down. Rajapaksa, whose whereabouts are unknown, said he would leave office on Wednesday, according to the parliamentary speaker. Wickremesinghe said he would depart as soon as...

LUCASVILLE—Over a century after he was killed in action in World War I, Private William Baker’s Purple Heart decoration now hangs at the Lucasville American Legion Post originally chartered in his name. Marjorie Mains, a member of the Auxiliary at Lucasville’s William Baker American Legion Post 363, said that what started out as a puzzling question decades ago later snowballed into efforts to help Baker’s family apply for his Purple Heart. “To me, it’s sort of like your roots,” Mains explained. “The post was named for him when it was chartered in 1920. What I did goes back to 1969 when we had our sesquicentennial celebration here for the founding of the village. I wasn’t involved at the time, but some of the older ones in the community who have since passed on searched and looked for who William Baker was,” she said. The question occupied Mains’ mind for years. Around eight years ago, she relied on her experience with family research and the availability of online genealogical searches to finally find their answers. “I thought, ‘I’m going to do...

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded more than $6.5 million to the University of Minnesota Medical School Department of Family Medicine and Community Health to fund two five-year studies designed to build greater understanding of the links between psychosocial stress and heightened risk of cardiovascular disease among children in diverse populations.  Led by principal investigator Jerica Berge, professor of family medicine and public health, the simultaneous studies, known jointly by the name of “Family Matters,” involve in-depth research with children from 1,307 Twin Cities families.  The studies will, Berge explained, “examine how, as we say, stress ‘gets under the skin,’ to understand how different stressors get to the point of manifesting in higher cardiovascular risk.”  While running two studies at the same time is a monumental task, Berge said that her team — and their funders — agreed that it was the best way to tackle the subject. “These are five-year studies,” she said. “It does take time, but because we have two studies running, we will get done in five years what might have otherwise taken us 10.” Article...

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A jury has awarded $85 million in the death of a man who was restrained by San Diego County sheriff’s deputies in 2015. The federal jury on Tuesday found for the family in a negligence and wrongful death lawsuit against the county for the death of Lucky Phounsy, 32, after a confrontation with deputies, including one who later served jail time for assaulting women while on duty. “We think that the jury verdict did deliver both truth and justice,” said Tim Scott, an attorney for the family. The lawsuit said that Phounsy called 911 on April 13, 2015, after he began experiencing symptoms of a mental health crisis, including delusions that someone was going to harm him, his wife and their two young children. The deputies who arrived were “unnecessarily confrontational, aggressive, and profane,” increasing Phounsy’s paranoia and escalating the situation, the lawsuit said. As Phounsy became more agitated, the deputies repeatedly shocked him with a stun gun and punched him and hit him with a baton before he was hog-tied and taken away in...
