The New York Times reported Monday afternoon that at least 40 subpoenas have been filed for allies of former President Donald Trump over the attempt to overthrow the 2020 election using the fake electors. At least two of Trump's top advisers had their phones taken by the FBI, sources told the Times. Boris Epshteyn, a Russian-American Republican political strategist who served as a strategic adviser to Trump's 2020 campaign was one of those who had to surrender his phone. The other was Mike Roman an opposition researcher who worked for Trump from 2017 to 2018. He went on to work on the campaign, and became the person who handed off the envelope of fake electors to be given to Vice President Mike Pence. The Times described it as an indication that the Justice Department's case is escalating after slow movement for the past several months. Dan Scavino, Trump’s former social media director is also among those who got a subpoena from the case. Former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik was another subpoenaed. He was on the team with Rudy...
Washington (CNN)Eleven of the "fake electors" who participated in a plan to subvert the Electoral College have asked a judge to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from her probe into the Republican effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. The group argued in a new court filing that they are each "inextricably intertwined" with Republican state Sen. Burt Jones, a fake elector who Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney recently ruled cannot be investigated by Willis after she hosted a fundraiser for Jones' Democratic opponent.Last month, Willis' office revealed that all 16 fake Trump electors in Georgia who signed on to an "unofficial electorate certificate" that was ultimately sent to the National Archives in late 2020 are targets of an ongoing criminal investigation. The fake GOP electors specifically requested that the court "reconsider its order limiting the scope of the DA and her office's disqualification and instead order that the disqualification applies to the entire investigation and all subsequent proceedings," according to a court filing from their attorneys."Indeed, because Senator Jones has been removed from this...
Mario Tama/Getty Images Leaked emails show Trump allies Kelli Ward — the chair of the Arizona Republican Party — and Arizona state Senator Kelly Townsend worried they would “appear treasonous” for joining a fake electors plot to keep then-President Donald Trump in power. New York Times correspondent Maggie Haberman scored yet another scoop (along with Luke Broadwater) with yet another strange development in the plot to submit slates of fake electors. Haberman and Broadwater obtained an email from Kenneth Chesebro, a member of the Trump campaign election legal team, in which he tells the rest of the team that Ward and Townsend are hinky — not about doing treason, but about appearing to do treason. Cheseboro even tells his colleagues they’ve got “a valid point,” and contrasts the Trump electors with “legitimate ones”: I just got off the phone with Mayor Giuliani. I told him that 3 days ago, you had told me you planned to seek cert. from the AZ Sup Ct’s dismissal of the case (on grounds of due process denial, and the unconstitutionally of the Electoral Count...
MANDEL NGAN/AFP via Getty Images Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) ripped into Fox News host Mark Levin on Twitter Tuesday after he said a plot to keep former President Donald Trump in power in 2020 was not “criminal.” Media Matters hit Levin with a piece Monday which chronicled a commentary he delivered on Sunday’s edition of Life, Liberty & Levin. The piece was headlined: “Mark Levin passionately defends Trump’s fake electors scheme: ‘You might think it’s weird, you might think it’s unethical, but it’s not a crime.” On his show, Levin argued the scheme was political, and not criminal. He said: That is not a crime either. You might not like it. You might think it’s weird, you might think it’s unethical, but it’s not a crime. So to criminalize politics, to criminalize many of these things that have gone on in this country through its history, to completely misunderstand what the Electoral College is all about. Levin shared the reporting from Media Matters and lashed out at the media watchdog group. “Uh, I said it wasn’t criminal, assh*les; I didn’t passionately...
The scheme to overthrow the 2020 presidential election using fake Trump electors in states President Joe Biden carried has been broadly panned as illegal by legal experts. Even John Eastman, the far-right lawyer who drafted the memo outlining the scheme, admitted in private to Trump that there was no real basis for it in law. But according to Fox News commentator Mark Levin, it was a perfectly valid scheme. On Monday, he told his viewers, "That is to be resolved by the United States Congress. That is not a crime either. You might not like it. You might think it's weird, you might think it's unethical, but it's not a crime." Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), one of two Republicans on the House January 6 Committee and a key voice against Trump from the right, begged to differ, criticizing Levin's remark in a Twitter thread on Tuesday. "The Eastman memos & fake elector scheme are indefensible," wrote Cheney, tagging Levin's account. "On the memos: Eastman took the opposite legal position a month before the election; he knew all 9 Justices would...
Washington (CNN)Georgia Republican Party Chairman David Shafer has appeared in front of a special grand jury in Atlanta investigating efforts by Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 election in the state, a source with knowledge of the investigation confirmed to CNN. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis sent a target letter to Shafer earlier this month, warning him that he may be indicted as part of her wide-ranging investigation. Shafer is one of the 16 "fake electors" who participated in a plan to subvert the Electoral College and are now targets of Willis' ongoing criminal investigation. At least 11 of the 16 people who signed the fake certificates supporting Trump on December 14, 2020, were scheduled to appear in front of the grand jury this week, it was revealed at a hearing in Superior Court of Fulton County last week. Shafer also has faced inquiries from federal investigators and the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. In February, Shafer told the House committee that the fake electors scheme came at...
During the January 6th committee hearing, text messages revealed that Sen. Ron Johnson tried to personally hand off a slate of alternate electors for Michigan and Wisconsin to Vice President Pence — electors who would refuse to certify President Biden’s election win. This took place just minutes before electoral votes were counted on Jan. 6, 2021. This was all in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Many people are outraged and have taken to social media to express their thoughts. “Sen. Ron Johnson should resign, effective immediately,” tweeted state Representative Francesca Hong (D-76). Wisconsin Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes said, “Ron Johnson actively tried to undermine this democracy. He literally tried to hand Mike Pence fake ballots.” Source: MSNBC/Youtube Ron Johnson is a danger to our country and our fundamental rights. Chris Strohm, Billy House and Sabrina Willmer (Bloomberg) — The Justice Department is using a grand jury in Washington to investigate efforts by former President Donald Trump and his inner circle to create false electors and pressure former Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the 2020 election, according to a person familiar with the matter. Marc Short, Pence’s former chief of staff, and Greg Jacob, the former vice president’s chief counsel, appeared before the grand jury in recent days where they were asked by federal prosecutors about conversations they had with Trump and his allies about efforts to create and submit false elector certificates from some states Joe Biden won, according to the person, who asked not to be identified due to the sensitive nature of the investigation.350522986 The nature of the questions posed to grand jury witnesses by prosecutors, earlier reported by the Washington Post, is one of the clearest signs to date the Justice Department’s investigation has expanded beyond those who attacked the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, to focus on actions taken by Trump and his...
(CNN)The State Bar of Georgia is investigating two Republican lawyers who signed on to the "fake electors" scheme to subvert the Electoral College in the 2020 presidential election. The lawyers, Brad Carver and Daryl Moody, were specifically referred to the State Disciplinary Board for investigation by the Office of General Counsel, the state bar told CNN in a statement. Carver, a lawyer and member of the Republican National Lawyers Association, and Moody, chairman of the Foundation Board of Governors for the Georgia Republican Foundation, are two of the 16 individuals who signed the fake elector certificates that were ultimately sent to the National Archives in late 2020."We can acknowledge the existence and status of these matters because the complainant has made them public. We are not able to provide details or any additional statement," a spokesperson for the state bar said. Neither Carver nor Moody immediately responded to CNN's requests for comment. Newly-uncovered emails show former President Donald Trump’s campaign team and their collaborators knew their attempts to dispute the 2020 election were legally fraught to the point of admitting it was “fake.” This according to a report from The New York Times. The Times authenticated a series of emails from Trump campaign officials, lawyers, and people close to the ex-president, all of whom were involved with the plot to organize alternative electors and falsely declare Trump’s 2020 victory. These electors were meant to give former Vice President Mike Pence and Trump’s allies a pretense to disrupt Congress’ certification of the election results, which wound up getting derailed anyway with the events of January 6. The emails show that Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, and John Eastman all had correspondence with Trump campaign officials who worked with outside lawyers to assemble their list of alternative electors list, even though they knew it might not hold up to scrutiny. One email shows that Jack Wilenchik, a Phoenix-based lawyer who helped with the plot in Arizona, contacted Trump campaign strategic adviser Boris Epshteyn with a...
Fulton County Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis photographed in her office on Jan. 4, 2022.Ben Gray | AP A judge Monday effectively barred a Georgia prosecutor from investigating one of 16 Republican "fake electors" for former President Donald Trump, ruling that a recent campaign fundraiser she hosted for that man's political opponent disqualified her. In the same order related to state Sen. Burt Jones, Fulton County Judge Robert McBurney also denied a motion by 11 other Trump electors who sought to quash a grand jury subpoena issued at the behest of county District Attorney Fani Willis. Willis may continue to investigate them — and Trump himself — for possible criminal meddling in Georgia's 2020 election. But Monday's order related to Jones, who is the GOP nominee for lieutenant governor, is an embarrassing loss for the prosecutor. Her investigation is considered the biggest threat to Trump in terms of potential criminal liability. Willis and her special prosecution team were barred from issuing a subpoena to Jones, from categorizing him as a subject or target of the grand jury probe, and from...
(CNN)An Atlanta-area judge said Thursday he will not quash subpoenas for 11 of the "fake electors" who participated in a plan to subvert the Electoral College and are now targets of an ongoing criminal investigation.Judge Robert McBurney of Fulton County Superior Court said he would let the parties work out a framework with the Fulton County District Attorney's Office regarding their appearance before the grand jury and potentially invoking their Fifth Amendment rights. "I will not be quashing any of the subpoenas," McBurney said during a motion hearing. "I'm going to let the parties develop the framework they want to use as we go forward," he continued, adding that "It may be that the witnesses have very brief appearances in front of the grand jury."Court documents filed late Tuesday revealed that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis had informed all 16 of the individuals who signed an "unofficial electoral certificate" that was ultimately sent to the National Archives in late 2020 they may be indicted in her probe.Willis' office informed lawyers for those fake electors that the status change from...
The chairman of the Georgia Republican party is among GOP officials facing a criminal probe over claims they tried to overturn Joe Biden's 2020 victory.  David Shafer has been told he is one of 16 electors in the Peach State who now face possible charges for allegedly vowing to sway the last presidential election in Trump's favor.  Shafer and his unnamed fellow electors were previously told they were 'witnesses' into an ongoing probe by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. CNN reported that they've now been told they're targets of the investigation over claims they tried to undermine America's electoral college.   Under the Electoral College process, voters cast their ballots for candidates, but are actually picking a group of representatives, or electors, for those candidates. Georgia, like most states, have a winner take all system in which the candidate who wins the popular vote, is represented by all the electors. They meet and cast their vote in the state Legislature. Those votes are given to the candidate which won the most votes. Those elector votes are then certified by the...
By Kate Brumback | Associated Press ATLANTA — The Georgia prosecutor who’s investigating whether former President Donald Trump and others illegally interfered in the 2020 general election in the state has informed 16 Republicans who served as fake electors that they could face criminal charges. They all signed a certificate declaring falsely that then-President Trump had won the 2020 presidential election and declaring themselves the state’s “duly elected and qualified” electors even though Joe Biden had won the state and a slate of Democratic electors was certified. Eleven of them filed a motion Tuesday to quash their subpoenas, calling them “unreasonable and oppressive.” Also Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, agreed to file any challenges to a subpoena in the investigation in either state superior court or federal court in Georgia, according to a court filing. He had previously filed a motion in federal court in South Carolina trying to stop any subpoena from being issued to him there on behalf of the prosecutor in Georgia. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis last year opened a criminal...
(CNN)The Atlanta-area district attorney investigating Donald Trump and his allies' efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia has informed 11 individuals who were put forward as fake electors on behalf of the former president that there they are considered targets in the ongoing criminal probe, according to new court documents filed Tuesday. Fulton County DA Fani Willis' office informed lawyers for the 11 fake electors that the status change from witness to target was the result of "new evidence" that has come to light over the course of the probe.Atlanta-area DA tells Georgia GOP chair he could be indicted in election probe"As our investigation has matured and new evidence has come to light, in a spirit of integrity we feel it only fitting to inform you that your clients' status has changed to 'Target,'" prosecutors said, according to a defense filing. In the court filing, attorneys for the electors say they are moving to "quash" grand jury subpoenas for appearances beginning on July 25, calling them "unreasonable and oppressive." (CNN)The Atlanta-area district attorney investigating Donald Trump and his allies' efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia sent a target letter to state Republican party Chair David Shafer, warning him that he may be indicted as part of her investigation, according to two sources familiar with the matter. Shafer, who has faced inquiries from federal investigators, Georgia prosecutors and the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, acted as a pro-Trump elector in Georgia. He also helped organize the fake slate of electors in the Peach State, which Trump lost by nearly 12,000 votes. The letter was first reported by Yahoo News, which also reported other Georgia officials received similar target letters.Georgia has remained a central focus for investigators at state and federal levels. The Atlanta-area investigation was prompted after Trump's infamous phone call pressuring Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find" the votes needed to swing the state to him was revealed. The Justice Department is also investigating the fake electors scheme and a grand jury in Washington issued subpoenas in...
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis poses for a photo at her office, Feb. 24, 2021 in Atlanta. If you were wondering why Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis isn’t moving more quickly in her case against former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, wonder no more. Today, according to Yahoo News, Willis’ office sent “target” letters to top GOP officials informing them of upcoming indictments for their roles in a fake elector scheme in the state. According to Yahoo’s legal sources, the letters are going to state Sen. Burt Jones, the GOP candidate for lieutenant governor; state Sen. Brandon Beach; and David Shafer, chairman of the Georgia Republican Party. Jones is running against attorney Charlie Bailey, a Democrat, who is wisely going for his Republican rival’s jugular, calling Jones’ role as a “fake” elector “un-American,” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) reports. Georgia lieutenant gubernatorial candidate state Sen. Burt Jones (R-GA), right, shakes hands with former President Donald Trump on Sept. 25, 2021 in Perry, Georgia. Several unnamed Republican strategists reportedly fear that state Sen. Burt Jones’ involvement in the phony electors scandal in Georgia could come back to bite him in the ass in his bid for lieutenant governor this year. Jones is running against attorney Charlie Bailey, a Democrat, who is wisely going for his Republican rival’s jugular, calling Jones’ role as a “fake” elector “un-American,” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) reports. “Burt Jones doesn’t get to decide whose votes count and whose votes don’t … When you step in and say, ‘I am the official elector of this state and I am saying that Donald Trump won this state despite the law, despite the certification (of votes), we are saying this because we want it to be the case,’ there’s nothing more un-American, there’s nothing more unpatriotic than an action like that,” Bailey told the AJC.  RELATED STORY: Email obtained by prosecutors shows Trump’s campaign asked fake GOP electors for...
Washington (CNN)Republican operatives connected to the plan to put forward "alternate" electors for Donald Trump are set to turn over information to the Justice Department as soon as this week -- as criminal investigations examining efforts to overturn the 2020 election pick up pace. The DOJ issued numerous subpoenas in the past few weeks and is seeking information in all seven battleground states where Trump's campaign convened the false electors as part of the effort to subvert the Electoral College. Some of the subpoenas called for Republicans connected to the scheme to provide documents by Friday, sources familiar with the investigation told CNN.It's the latest step by federal investigators in an already sprawling criminal investigation, and it comes as a parallel investigation in Georgia also shows signs of ramping up amid subpoenas for former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham to testify. At the same time, the House select committee is revealing new information in public hearings from its investigation into Trump's "seven-part plan" to overturn the election that culminated in the US Capitol attack on January 6,...
By Sara Murray | CNN Arizona Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward and her husband, Michael Ward, were both subpoenaed Friday as part of the federal investigation into fake slates of electors, a source familiar with the matter tells CNN. The investigative move is just the latest sign of the widening probe that stemmed from the January 6 insurrection. Federal investigators are pursuing information in all seven battleground states that former President Donald Trump lost and where his campaign convened fake electors, a person briefed on the matter told CNN. The fake certificates were sent to the National Archives in the weeks after the election and had no impact on the electoral outcome. Both of the Wards acted as so-called alternate electors in Arizona. The source also confirmed that two others involved in the effort, Nancy Cottle and Loraine Pellegrino, also received subpoenas. Alexander Kolodin, an attorney for the Wards, told CNN: “This is an investigation based on allegations that our clients engaged in core First Amendment-protected activity, specifically, petitioning Congress for redress of grievances.” Earlier this week, investigators subpoenaed Georgia...
By Zachary Cohen, Sara Murray, Katelyn Polantz, Evan Perez and Marshall Cohen | CNN Federal investigators subpoenaed the Georgia Republican Party chairman for information related to the fake elector scheme there — as the Justice Department has issued a fresh round of subpoenas to people from several states who acted as rogue electors after the 2020 presidential election, multiple sources familiar with the situation told CNN. The subpoena for the chairman, David Shafer, represents a significant step because he played a central role in organizing the fake slate of electors from Georgia and coordinated the effort with the Trump campaign. The focus on Shafer also comes as sources tell CNN the Justice Department subpoenaed Trump electors this week in Georgia, Michigan and Pennsylvania — all states that former President Donald Trump lost. The Justice Department has been scrutinizing the Trump campaign’s use of so-called alternate electors. The new round of subpoenas represents an escalation of a criminal probe that, before now, had approached lower-level Republicans. All along, however, federal investigators have pursued information about political figures higher up, including at...

Federal agents issued a fresh batch of subpoenas Wednesday against political activists who supported former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn election results in at least two states, according to a new report. Agents "conducted court authorized law enforcement" at the home of Brad Carver, a Georgia lawyer, and Thomas Lane, who helped the Trump campaign, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday, citing FBI officials. This indicates the inquiry is examining the use of alternative electors during the aftermath of the election, according to the outlet. FEDERAL PROSECUTORS ACCUSE JAN. 6 COMMITTEE OF HINDERING CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS Carver allegedly put his signature on a document falsely purporting to be an elector for Trump, and Lane worked on behalf of Trump campaign efforts to overturn election results in Arizona and New Mexico, according to the report. A number of political activists and local officials produced documents falsely claiming to be electors in the event that legal challenges deemed Trump the elector winner. The exact reason for the subpoenas of Carver and Lane was not immediately clear. During...

Tuesday's hearing revealed new information on how Trump, his team and a handful of Republican lawmakers worked behind the scenes to try to remove electors and replace them with a slate of pro-Trump ones picked by his team and the Republican National Committee. The panel also heard emotional testimony from state election officials who recalled in chilling detail the violent threats and intimidation many of them endured in the wake of the 2020 election. (CNN)The House select committee on Tuesday unveiled new information showing the role that Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson played in pushing "fake" electors for then-President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021.A Johnson aide texted a staffer for then-Vice President Mike Pence that the Wisconsin Republican wanted to hand-deliver "fake" electors to Pence just before the start of the January 6 congressional session to certify Joe Biden's 2020 election win.The committee showed text messages that Johnson aide Sean Riley had sent to Pence aide Chris Hodgson saying that Johnson "needs to hand something to VPOTUS please advise." Wisconsin Democrats on Tuesday led calls for U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson's resignation after the House January 6 committee revealed texts indicating that the Republican's office wanted to hand-deliver certificates of fake electors to then-Vice President Mike Pence in service of former President Donald Trump's attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The bipartisan congressional panel probing the deadly 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol showed an exchange of text messages initiated by Johnson's chief of staff Sean Riley to Pence legislative director Chris Hodgson that the Republican senator wanted to advance an "alternate slate of electors" for Wisconsin and Michigan, both of which Biden won. "Do not give that to him," Hodgson texted back. In response to the presentation during Tuesday's hearing state Rep. Francesca Hong (D-76) tweeted that "Sen. Ron Johnson should resign, effective immediately." While Johnson is not among the 147 congressional Republicans who voted to overturn President Joe Biden's Electoral College victory, he did host a December 2020 hearing at which supporters of Trump's "Big Lie" that the election was "stolen" spent hours promoting...
By Scott Bauer | Associated Press MADISON, Wis. — An aide for U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson told former Vice President Mike Pence’s staff that the Republican from Wisconsin wanted to hand-deliver to Pence fake elector votes from his state and neighboring Michigan, text messages revealed at Tuesday’s meeting of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection showed. Johnson spokeswoman Alexa Henning downplayed the texts after they were publicly revealed for the first time during the committee’s hearing in Washington, but did not deny that Johnson had wanted to hand-deliver the slate of fake electors to Pence. “The senator had no involvement in the creation of an alternate slate of electors and had no foreknowledge that it was going to be delivered to our office,” Henning tweeted. “This was a staff to staff exchange. The J6 committee set out Tuesday to illustrate for the public just how the former president and his advisers tried getting state lawmakers and election officials to overturn the result of the 2020 election, thus potentially breaking myriad state and federal laws in the bargain. I think the committee succeeded. But it did more than that. Who would you vote for in 2024, Biden or DeSantis? Vote now. It underscored a theory of mine, which is this: Donald Trump had and still has at his disposal two groups ready to commit acts of political violence, or threaten acts of political violence, when he gives the word. These people are not going away. They live and work among us. One is paramilitaries of the kind who sacked and looted the US Capitol with the clear intention of murdering members of the Congress in order to terrify Vice President Mike Pence into completing the coup. Armed men showed up at the homes of witnesses as well as their family member’s homes. Armed men were outside the Arizona House...

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel confirmed that former President Donald Trump was involved in lawyer John Eastman's fake elector scheme. During a brief excerpt from her deposition played during the Jan. 6 committee hearing Tuesday, McDaniel explained that Trump called her and put her in touch with Eastman, who then engaged with the RNC about the scheme over the following months. SCHIFF SAYS COMMITTEE HAS 'EVIDENCE' TRUMP WAS INVOLVED IN FAKE ELECTOR PLOT "He turned the call over to Mr. Eastman, who then proceeded to talk about the importance of the RNC helping the campaign gather these contingent electors in case any of these legal challenges that were ongoing changed the result of any of the states. I think more, just helping them reach out and assemble them," she said. "My understanding is the campaign did take the lead, and we just were helping them in that — in that role." Eastman was providing legal advice to Trump's allies about efforts to challenge the election. The House Jan. 6 select committee has battled Eastman...
The January 6 Committee highlighted a series of text messages showing that Senator Ron Johnson’s (R-WI) office tried to offer fake electors for Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election, but they were refused by a staffer for former Vice President Mike Pence. The Committee’s Tuesday hearing partly consisted of a video presentation from their investigative counsel, Casey Lucier, and she focused on the schemes in several battleground states where Trump and his allies sought to pressure officials over the 2020 election results. The presentation also focused on those close to Trump who wanted to organize fake electors and falsely declare him the 2020 victor in their attempts to legally dispute the contest. As Lucier looked at attempts by fake electors to deliver false certificates to Washington, she brought up text messages from Republican Party officials in Wisconsin indicating the Trump campaign “asked for someone to fly their fake elector’s documents to Washington.” Lucier then brought up a January 6 exchange between Johnson staffer Sean Riley and Pence aide Chris Hodgson, wherein Riley tried to ask how his boss...
The 50th anniversary of Watergate comes at a time when the bipartisan select committee formed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is holding a series of public hearings on the January 6, 2021 insurrection. It was 50 years ago, on June 17, 1972, that the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters became the target of a break-in, and it was 48 years ago, in August 1974, that President Richard Nixon resigned in disgrace. With the January 6 hearings underway during the Watergate anniversary, some Donald Trump/Nixon comparisons are inevitable. Yet the damning evidence being presented during the January 6 hearings underscores the fact that Trump and his MAGA loyalists were willing to cross dangerous lines that even Nixon wouldn’t have crossed. One such line was using fake “electors” in a brazen effort to steal the 2020 election from now-President Joe Biden. Journalist Rosalind S. Helderman, in a report for the Washington Post published on June 20, explains, “The convening of the Electoral College on December 14, 2020, was supposed to mark the end of the wild, extended presidential election that year. But...
A top Democrat on the Jan. 6 committee said there is evidence tying the former president directly to a plan to send fake electors to Congress. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) told CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday that the plan to send secondary groups of electors from battleground states was orchestrated not just by the president’s campaign officials, but President Donald Trump himself was also involved. “We’ll show evidence of the president’s involvement in this scheme,” Schuff said. “We’ll also, again, show evidence about what his own lawyers came to think about this scheme.” TRUMP WILL BE ‘HARD TO STOP’ IN 2024, SAYS GOP LAWMAKER WHO BACKED IMPEACHMENT  During the committee’s second public hearing last week, lawmakers presented the testimonies of several people close to Trump who warned him that efforts to overturn the 2020 election were doomed to fail. Some of the president’s closest allies, who in public fought to overturn the election results, were telling him privately that he had, in fact, lost. On Thursday, during a hearing that recounted the pressure campaign put on then-Vice President Mike...
(CNN)The House January 6 committee will show evidence at its upcoming hearing about then-President Donald Trump's involvement in a scheme to submit fake slates of electors in the 2020 presidential election, US Rep. Adam Schiff, a member of the panel, said Sunday. "Yes, we'll show evidence of the President's involvement in this scheme. We'll also again show evidence about what his own lawyers came to think about this scheme," the California Democrat told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union." "And we'll show courageous state officials who stood up and said they wouldn't go along with this plan to either call legislators back into session or decertify the results for Joe Biden."Federal prosecutors are reviewing the fake Electoral College certifications created by Trump allies that falsely declared him the winner of seven states that he lost in 2020. A campaign staffer for former President Donald Trump asked Republicans for 'complete discretion' in communications about a scheme to name fake electors amid a legal battle over the election.  'I must ask for your complete discretion in this process,' aide Robert Sinners, wrote the group of Georgia Republicans, according to an email obtained by the Washington Post and published in a week where the House January 6 Committee rolls out an explosive prime time hearing designed for maximum impact. He told the group of 16 Republicans who were to take part in the event at the state capitol: 'Your duties are imperative to ensure the end result — a win in Georgia for President Trump — but will be hampered unless we have complete secrecy and discretion.' Robert Sinners told Georgia Republicans meeting in the state capitol to provide 'complete discretion' as they prepared to meet as 'fake electors' Sinners also wanted them to keep a lid on their activities generally and keep it out of the press. 'Please, at no point should you mention anything to do with Presidential...
An incriminating new email obtained by both CNN and The Washington Post is shedding light on an election plot in Georgia that was reportedly orchestrated by former President Donald Trump's campaign. According to CNN, the Trump campaign is said to have advised fake electors to infiltrate the Georgia State Capitol and cast fake electoral votes for the former president. The email correspondence, which was dated December 13, 2020, included detailed instruction for electors to get themselves in position to cast Georgia's electoral college votes although President Joe Biden had already been announced as the election winner of the state. In the email, Robert Sinners —a Georgia-based elections operations director for the Trump campaign— advised that the group of fake electors to use "complete secrecy and discretion." The email also included instructions for the fake electors to sign certificates confirming they had the authority to cast the votes on behalf of the state. "I must ask for your complete discretion in this process," wrote Sinners. "Your duties are imperative to ensure the end result — a win in...

(CNN)The Trump campaign directed a group of Georgia Republicans to meet in secret and obscure their objectives in an email obtained by federal prosecutors as part of their recent investigation into Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the election in several swing states. The email is part of the intensifying Justice Department investigation focused on the Trump campaign's interactions with so-called alternate Republican electors in states Trump lost and whether a scheme to organize them could be charged as a crime. The Georgia email has not been disclosed publicly until now. It was sent by Robert Sinners, Trump's election day operations lead in Georgia on December 13, 2020, 18 hours before the group of alternate electors gathered at the Georgia State Capitol, according to multiple sources familiar with it."I must ask for your complete discretion in this process," Sinners wrote. (CNN)Federal investigators have interviewed Republicans in Georgia about interactions with people in former President Donald Trump's orbit and his 2020 reelection campaign, as the Justice Department's sprawling criminal probe examines efforts to put forth alternate slates of electors to displace Joe Biden electors in battleground states Trump lost. In one case, FBI agents asked a prominent Georgia Republican whether he had direct conversations with Trump."They just asked who talked to me. If anyone from the Trump campaign had been in touch with me. Did Giuliani talk to me? Did Trump talk to me?" said Patrick Gartland, who was set to serve as an elector but dropped out. He recounted how two FBI agents visited his home in Marietta, Georgia, a few weeks ago.Investigators have sought answers this month from Gartland and others connected to the GOP in Georgia -- both in FBI interviews and in grand jury subpoenas for documents and testimony. Investigators are looking at whether the Trump campaign played a role in the submission of false election certificates, according to people approached by the Justice Department. DOJ probe...
(CNN)Justice Department prosecutors have subpoenaed information about some of former President Donald Trump's lawyers and closest advisers as part of their criminal investigation into efforts to put forward fake slates of electors in the 2020 election, a source familiar with the investigation told CNN.The subpoena asks a witness connected to a slate of "alternate" electors for Trump in a state that Joe Biden won to provide to a federal grand jury any communications with government employees, with the Trump campaign and with some of the most prominent people around Trump in 2020, according to the source familiar with the probe. The elector-related investigation represents yet another aspect of the Justice Department's sprawling investigation into January 6, 2021. That criminal probe has expanded in recent months beyond the hundreds of rioters who stormed the US Capitol as investigators gather information about Trump's inner circle.Former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, adviser Boris Epshteyn and campaign lawyer Justin Clark are among the list of names the witness was asked about, the source said. The subpoena also seeks communications with several other individuals, including the right-wing...
Jon Cherry/Getty Images Ten illegitimate electors for ex-President Donald Trump are being sued — and could face millions of dollars in fines — in what is being called the first lawsuit of its kind. A raft of local Wisconsin Republican officials who signed on to a fake slate of electors in the 2020 presidential election — Bob Spindell, Andrew Hitt, Kelly Ruh, Carol Brunner, Scott Grabins, Bill Feehan, Kathy Kiernan, Darryl Carlson, Pam Travis, and Mary Buestrin — are named in a suit that seeks to block them from submitting fake elector papers in the future, to stop them from ever serving as electors, and to fine each of them up to $200,000.00. From The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Two of Wisconsin’s presidential electors filed a sweeping lawsuit Tuesday seeking to fine 10 Republicans who posed as members of the Electoral College after Donald Trump lost to Joe Biden. The Democrats who brought the lawsuit in Dane County Circuit Court are also seeking to punish two attorneys who worked on the effort. They want a judge to award all involved up...
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Two Wisconsin Democratic electors and a voter on Tuesday sued Republicans who attempted to cast electoral ballots for Donald Trump in 2020 despite Joe Biden’s victory in the battleground state. Their lawsuit filed in Dane County Circuit Court alleges a conspiracy by Trump and his allies to overturn his loss in the presidential race, calling it “as legally baseless as it was repugnant to democracy.” It seeks up to $2.4 million in damages as well as disqualifying the Republicans from ever serving as electors again. The plaintiffs say it’s the first such lawsuit in the seven swing states where GOP electors falsely declared Trump the winner and cast their votes for him in December 2020. “It’s essential to have accountability and to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” said Jeffrey Mandell, an attorney for the plaintiffs. “We have heard in the more than a year since the fraudulent electors met the excuse that what they did was not wrong, it was totally fine. We want a court to make clear that is not true.” Republican...
Fifteen and one-half months into Joe Biden’s presidency, former President Donald Trump continues to be the subject of a variety of investigations — including one by Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis, who has been probing his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the Peach State. And Willis’ colleagues, according to CNN sources, have interviewed several Trump supporters who were fake electors after that election. Zachary Cohen and Sara Murray of CNN report, “Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ office appears to be trying to determine whether the pro-Trump electors in Georgia had any knowledge that their actions may have been a component of a broader and potentially illegal plot to pressure election officials and overturn Joe Biden’s victory, a source told CNN. Biden won Georgia by a nearly 12,000-vote margin in 2020 — the first Democrat to carry the state in 28 years.” Georgia, once a deep red state, has evolved into a swing state and now has two Democratic U.S. senators: the Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. Trump has refused to admit that...

Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis has been working with the special grand jury in the voter fraud case involving former President Donald Trump. According to an announcement from her office Monday, however, Willis is also turning her eye to the fake electors who attempted to defraud the government with documents meant to cause confusion in the Electoral College count. "We're going to look at anything connected with interference with the 2020 election," Willis told CNN's Anderson Cooper. "I've allowed that to be a broad scope, not just the (former) President's phone call that you played there but other things that indicate that there may have been interference with that election, to include fake electorates." Georiga was among several states where Trump campaign aides coordinated with Republicans to create false documents. In Michigan, the attorney general referred her investigation's findings to the Justice Department. In Arizona, the fake electors fraudulently used the state seal of Arizona on the documents. The Republican attorney general there, however, is refusing to hold them accountable. David Shafer, a Republican from Georgia...
A Wisconsin official who served as a fake elector for then-President Donald Trump in 2020 was voted out of office on Tuesday. Kelly Ruh, who was one of 84 people nationwide posing as alternate electors, was running for reelection as an alderperson for the town of De Pere, near Green Bay, according to Bolts. Ruh lost her election to Pamela Gantz, a real estate agent and volunteer poll worker. "I promise not to use my position to influence any national elections or support conspiracies," Gantz told the outlet. She vowed to keep elections in the community "fair and free." Washington (CNN)Federal criminal investigators have expanded the January 6 investigation to gather information about fundraising and organizing for the political rally immediately before Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol, as well as the effort to subvert the Electoral College vote count, multiple sources tell CNN.Subpoenas have been issued by a grand jury in Washington in recent weeks, seeking information on the rally and on the alternate slates of fake electors for former President Donald Trump in swing states he lost, sources said, marking a significant development in the probe.Until recently, prosecutors were almost exclusively bringing cases against alleged rioters and some members of extremist groups accused of conspiring to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election. An expanded inquiry into the rally and fake electors represents a new stage of the investigation that looks into a more well-connected political circle. One of the sources said the inquiry appeared to be examining "a higher level of rally planning," including who was communicating with whom. There were multiple rallies before the Capitol riot on January 6, and the federal investigators appear...
The Wisconsin Elections Commission declined to impose sanctions on a group of 10 Republicans who posed as alternate electors for the 2020 presidential election. A letter from the commission Tuesday said the decision was unanimous among its six members, one of whom, Bob Spindell, was part of the slate of false electors backing former President Donald Trump, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "We simply gathered on the advice of legal counsel to ensure all options were preserved in case of a court decision favorable to the Trump legal team in ongoing litigation," said Andrew Hitt, a former chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party and one of the false electors, in a statement. BIDEN ELECTORS RECALL ARCHITECT RUNNING FOR WISCONSIN GOVERNOR President Joe Biden won the state of Wisconsin by nearly 21,000 votes, and 10 Democratic electors sent the state's Electoral College votes to Congress.
