MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jose Miranda hit a game-ending, three-run homer against Milwaukee’s Josh Hader as the Minnesota Twins finally got a timely hit to beat the Brewers 4-1 on Wednesday. Miranda’s third hit of the game traveled to the second deck in left field. The 23-year-old rookie knew it was gone as he threw his bat and looked at the Minnesota dugout before the ball landed. The Twins have five walk-off wins this season. Hader (0-3) walked Jorge Polanco and allowed a single to Max Kepler before Miranda’s drive. Jhoan Duran (1-3) earned the first win of his career with one inning in relief, allowing one hit and a walk. Milwaukee had runners on first and second in the ninth inning, but Jace Peterson grounded into a 3-6-3 double play to end the threat. Peterson homered earlier for the Brewers’ lone run. Minnesota had plenty of chances to put the game away, but the Twins were 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base through the first nine innings. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Seth Brown hit a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning, Sean Murphy followed with a two-run single and the Oakland Athletics ended their four-game losing streak against the Twins, beating Minnesota 5-2 on Tuesday night. Kevin Smith homered to end a long slump and help Oakland break out of its own offensive funk. The A’s went into the game with the lowest team batting average in the majors (.199) and had scored one run in each of their three previous games. READ MORE: Sanchez, Lewis Lead Twins Past Athletics 3-1“I think it’s just what this lineup is capable of every day,” Brown said after the A’s second win in six games. “We’ve been hitting the ball really well the last couple of weeks, and finally seeing them fall tonight was a real positive. It’s something we needed to see.” Royce Lewis and Gary Sánchez each hit solo home runs for the Twins. After the game Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelii said Lewis will be sent down to the minors to make room for shortstop Carlos Correa coming...
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kelsey Mitchell scored 26 points, Crystal Dangerfield had 10 points and six assists against her former team and the Indiana Fever beat the Minnesota Lynx 82-76 on Tuesday night to snap a six-game losing streak in the series. Dangerfield, who was waived by Minnesota a week ago, made a jumper from the free-throw line to extend Indiana’s lead to 76-72 with 2:26 left and added two free throws at 18.9 to seal it. Dangerfield, the 2020 rookie of the year, was 3 of 7 from the field with no turnovers in 21 minutes. Rookie NaLyssa Smith added nine points and Destanni Henderson had eight points and five assists for Indiana (1-2). Mitchell made four of Indiana’s nine 3-pointers and Victoria Vivians added three. Indiana fell behind 21-12 in the first quarter, but responded with a 36-18 second quarter. The 36 points rank third in Indiana history for scoring in a quarter. Sylvia Fowles had 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead Minnesota (0-3). Rachel Banham added 14 points and Jessica Shepard had 10 points, 10 rebounds and...
(CNN)Ja Morant exploded into life during the fourth quarter -- including an acrobatic game-winning lay-up with one second remaining -- to lead a dazzling comeback from the Memphis Grizzlies as they stunned the Minnesota Timberwolves 111-109 on Tuesday to take a 3-2 series lead in the first round of the NBA playoffs. The star guard scored 18 of his game-high 30 points in the fourth quarter and sealed the deal with his dramatic lay-up to wrap up the game."'Go get a bucket, Ja,'" Morant said when asked reporters what the plan had been ahead of the last play of the game.It had been a topsy-turvy game as the Grizzlies built an early 13-2 lead. Chicago White Sox left fielder Eloy Jiménez exited with right hamstring soreness after trying to beat a throw to first base in the second inning Saturday against the Minnesota Twins. He is being evaluated, the Sox said. Jiménez hit a grounder to third, stumbled after crossing first base and fell. He got to his feet but was taken off the field on a cart. He is slashing .222/.256/.333 with one home run and seven RBIs in 11 games. Jiménez played just 55 games last season after suffering a ruptured left pectoral tendon during a Cactus League game. The Sox already are missing starting center fielder Luis Robert (groin strain) in this series. Robert suffered the injury Thursday in Cleveland. Manager Tony La Russa is hopeful Robert will return Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals. Starting right fielder AJ Pollock returned from the injured list (strained right hamstring) Friday. ()
AJ Pollock faced Lucas Giolito at the Chicago White Sox complex in Arizona earlier this week while both were recovering from injuries. The result of an at-bat depends on which player you ask. “The wind was going 40 mph to left field, so it was kind of cutting balls,” Pollock said before Friday’s game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. “(One at-bat) would have been a popup to mid-outfield. The other one to center either an out or maybe a home run. The outfielder added with a smile: “He’s going to call it an out, I’ll call it a homer and we’ll both feel good about it. Stats don’t matter. There were no stats there.” Pollock returned from the injured list Friday and was in the starting lineup in center fielder for the series opener against the Twins. He had been out since April 9 when he suffered a strained right hamstring after a single in the third inning of the second game of the season in Detroit. “I think I’m in a good spot, don’t want to jinx...
Major League Soccer’s All-Star Game will again pit the league’s best against their counterparts from Mexico’s LIGA MX. The game is set for Aug. 10 at Allianz Field, home of Minnesota United. The festivities that week will include a concert headlined by Khalid and a skills challenge, the league announced Thursday. The MLS and LIGA MX All-Stars played to a 1-1 draw last year before MLS prevailed on penalty kicks. “Our partnership with LIGA MX has brought out the best in both leagues on and off the field, and I have no doubt the intensity will be even higher for the rematch in Minnesota,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement. “Beyond the game, All-Star Week will celebrate our sport with a series of cultural and community initiatives for the passionate soccer fans of the region.” The match will be broadcast by ESPN and Univision in the United States. MLS will also introduce initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of the game, with a portion of the ticket proceeds allocated to sustainability efforts in...
A Sharks team in the midst of its longest losing streak in nearly two decades needed a spark, so San Jose turned to rookie center Thomas Bordeleau to provide one. The 2020 second round draft pick made his NHL debut in Minnesota on Sunday and recorded his first career assist, but it will take a lot more than one promising skater to dig the Sharks out of their current mess. The Sharks forced the Wild into overtime on Sunday, but Jared Spurgeon scored his second goal of the game 1:05 into overtime to send the Minnesota to the playoffs and extend San Jose’s losing streak to 10 games with the 5-4 defeat. “It’s crazy how close we are on a lot of nights,” head coach Bob Boughner said. “I’ve never been through anything like this as a coach or as a player, losing this many games, and I’m not sure some of those guys in the room have, the veterans, and certainly my staff.” Related Articles San Jose Sharks | Sharks fall to Dallas Stars, losing streak now the...
So far, the Timberwolves are two-for-two in fan protests this postseason, if you count the play-in. So, what are fans against Glen Taylor? Timberwolves protest, explained. Taylor sold the Timberwolves to a new group of owners, that of which includes former baseball star Alex Rodriguez. However, he is still connected to the franchise for now. On his retirement tour — in this case a Minnesota playoff run — a protest group called Direct Action Everywhere is making sure to hit him where it hurts. In the Timberwolves play-in game win over the Clippers, as well as their first playoff game against the Grizzlies, the protestors wore shirts which read ‘Glen Taylor Roasts Animals alive’. This is related to a disgusting decision from Taylor’s farm, which threatened to kill five million chickens due to a bird flu outbreak. Timberwolves protest, explainedBy performing extreme actions such as glueing oneself to the floor during a live sporting even, or in this case chaining oneself to the basket, said protestors are bringing attention to the cause and literally pausing the game. Their shirts read ‘Glen...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo will miss Saturday’s game in Minnesota due to right knee soreness. The United States have been slammed by opponents Honduras after they were made to play in freezing -2F weather during their 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat in Minnesota, with the decision blasted as 'inconceivable'. The visitors were enraged over the choice of venue and the chilling conditions - with two players forced off at half-time with hypothermia and others requiring IV drips to recover. Head coach Hernan Dario Gomez led the protests - even before the game - slamming the decision to host the game in Minnesota. He said that it was 'not normal' that his players, used to temperatures reaching 86F in their country this week, should have to play in a location that is 'not for enjoying, it's for suffering'. As the hosts, the US were able to choose the stadium for the game and picked Minnesota's Allianz Field - a new venue opened just three years ago, but facing sub-zero temperatures in the Midwest winter. The wind chill was -8F at kick-off, making it the coldest U.S. home game in the team's history. The winter chill in Minnesota was...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The University of Minnesota announced that the men’s basketball game against Penn State on Wednesday has been postponed. According to the university, the game was postponed due to internal COVID-19 protocols within the Golden Gophers program. On Sunday, Minnesota played without four student-athletes due to injury, illness and protocols. After further testing on Monday, the team had fewer than seven scholarship players available, which is below the Big Ten Conference roster minimum. The teams will work with the Big Ten Conference to reschedule the game. Minnesota’s next game is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. against Rutgers.

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN – DECEMBER 25: Rasul Douglas #29 of the Green Bay Packers celebrates with teammates following an interception during a game against the Cleveland Browns at Lambeau Field on December 25, 2021 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Packers defeated the Browns 24-22. (Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images) The Packers needed four interceptions to narrowly defeat the Browns last week. They’ll need to play much better to defeat Minnesota in Week 17.  Winning ugly is important in the NFL and that’s certainly what the Packers did against the Browns on Christmas Day. Green Bay’s 24-22 win was greatly aided by Baker Mayfield’s holiday generosity. The Packers’ defense managed to notch four interceptions due to Mayfield’s erratic play under center. Kirk Cousins isn’t going to be nearly as generous this week. The Vikings desperately need a win over Green Bay to keep their scant playoff hopes alive. At the very least, Minnesota would love to deal their division rivals a cruel late-season loss to hamper the Packers’ momentum heading into the postseason. On paper, this looks like a pretty comfortable...
PHOENIX (AP) — West Virginia was already facing a difficult task against a Minnesota defense that’s one of the best in the country. The Golden Gophers shut down the pass, smother the run, rarely give an inch. The Mountaineers’ climb became much steeper when leading rusher Leddie Brown opted to skip the Guaranteed Rate Bowl to prepare for the NFL draft. “That’s something that everybody is having to deal with,” West Virginia coach Neal Brown said of opt-outs and transfers. “What our philosophy is on that is that we’re going to take the group that’s prepared to play, that is motivated to play and we’re going to give them the very best opportunity to win.” Minnesota (8-4) earned a spot in Tuesday night’s game at Chase Field — home of the Arizona Diamondbacks — behind a stifling defense. The Gophers were fifth nationally in total defense during the regular season, allowing 284.8 yards per game. They were ninth against the pass (184.7 yards per game) and the run (100.6), holding six teams to less than 80 yards on the ground....
Protecting quarterback Justin Fields has been a challenge for the Chicago Bears all season, and now their pass protection will get further tested Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings. Left tackle Jason Peters is dealing with a high ankle sprain that threatens to sideline him for multiple weeks, and right tackle Larry Borom on Wednesday was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Complicating matters is the fact Teven Jenkins, the likely replacement for Peters, was one of seven players to miss Thursday’s walk through with a non-COVID-19 illness that has swept Halas Hall. The Bears aren’t just thinned out on the coaching staff because all three coordionators — Bill Lazor (offense), Sean Desai (defense) and Chris Tabor (special teams) — are in COVID-19 protocol. Twelve players (11 on the 53-man roster and one on the practiced squad) are on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and the team has been hit so hard coach Matt Nagy made the decision to scuttle a regular practice and hold a walk through. Jenkins struggled mightily replacing Peters in a noisy road environment at Lambeau...
Five-time Pro Bowl safety Harrison Smith kept the Minnesota Vikings’ season alive on Thursday night against the Steelers. Why do the Vikings keep blowing double-digit leads in the first place? That much we can’t explain, and likely falls more on the head coach and player mindset than anything else. Dalvin Cook said it best postgame in his interview with Erin Andrews, when he expressed he couldn’t believe the Vikings kept putting themselves in this position. Nonetheless, despite giving the Steelers every opportunity to cash in from the red zone one final time and tie the game, Smith came up huge, breaking up a seemingly-perfect pass from Ben Roethlisberger to rookie Pat Freiermuth. It was all set up for the Vikings on Sunday night. They were at home against a 5-1 Cowboys team that was missing their star quarterback Dak Prescott. Cooper Rush got his first career start under center for Dallas and took advantage of the opportunity. Rush led Dallas on an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to win the game. Minnesota’s offense, meanwhile, couldn’t find the end zone after the first drive of the game. Eric Kendricks Minnesota Vikings (Photo by Hannah Foslien/Getty Images) The Minnesota Vikings need a huge win over the Detroit Lions in Week 5. After a solid win against Seattle in Week 3, the Minnesota Vikings fell embarrassingly flat against the Cleveland Browns in a 14-7 loss to drop them to 1-3. They currently sit at No. 24 in the NFL power rankings and desperately need to get back in shape if they want to make the playoffs. This Sunday is a must-win game from Minnesota against the divisional-rival Detroit Lions who happen to be one of the worst teams in the league at 0-4. Overall, the odds seem to be stacked in the Vikings’ favor. Minnesota has won seven straight games against Detroit under head coach Mike Zimmer. They are also used to facing the elite talent of Matthew Stafford, and it doesn’t seem like Jared Goff will give them as much trouble from the quarterback position. That being said, nothing ever comes easy for the Vikings. They need to make a statement win and not underestimate the Lions, a simple...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Needing one big play downfield to stall the Cleveland pass rush and potentially come back to steal a win against the Browns, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins lofted a deep pass to Adam Thielen in the fourth quarter. The pass was off the mark. Thielen tried to play cornerback Greedy Williams as much as the ball. Williams came down with the interception, the first thrown by Cousins this season and snapping a streak of 224 consecutive attempts without a pick. Cousins and the Vikings had to turn away from their short, quick passing game in an attempt to get anything going against Cleveland’s stout defense in a 14-7 loss on Sunday. “Didn’t put enough points on the board,” Cousins said. “Started fast, had a great first drive but then didn’t do enough the rest of the game. Disappointing when we’re at home to not do more. We have to learn from it, watch the film and be very critical and correct things. Then we’ll move forward.” Minnesota was coming off its first win of the season, but...
