Liam Hendriks targeted July 1 for his return when he landed on the injured list. The Chicago White Sox closer’s prediction turned out to be pretty close. The Sox reinstated Hendriks from the IL on Monday ahead of a crucial three-game series against the division-leading Minnesota Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Sox also reinstated outfielder Adam Engel from the IL and optioned outfielder Adam Haseley and pitcher Jimmy Lambert to Triple-A Charlotte. “It was kind of meet in the middle,” Hendriks said Friday in San Francisco. “They had initially targeted July 8, I was going (with) the first, so we met at the Fourth.” He added with a laugh: “If you’re looking at the math, that means I win. Closer to my date.” Hendriks had been on the IL retroactive to June 11 with a right forearm strain. He threw a simulated game Friday as a final step toward returning. “I would have been fine being active (Friday), but they wanted to check the box of the sim game,” he said. “You have to understand their point of view:...
Thirty minutes after Nico Hoerner helped the Chicago Cubs secure a season-opening win, manager David Ross met the shortstop at his locker. Hoerner had put the Cubs ahead midway through the game with a two-run home run, his first since 2019, en route to their one-run victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. But Hoerner was not in the lineup for Friday’s game, which was postponed because of inclement weather. Instead, Ross opted to start Jonathan Villar at shortstop, giving Hoerner the day off. That served as the motivation for Ross to meet with Hoerner after Thursday’s game. Ross wanted to let him know the plan for the next day and the big-picture approach. “It’s just about communicating to those guys and making sure I’m getting ahead of that,” Ross said. “The other thing that I try not to do, one of my things is if you go deep the day before you’re not sitting the next day, so I told him that, like, ‘Hey, you hit a home run today, and I’m going to go against everything in...
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans are showing serious signs of healing up after using an NFL-high 88 players this season. For the first time in weeks, the Titans did not declare any player out Friday ahead of Sunday’s game against Miami (8-7). They also activated wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine off the reserve/COVID-19 list. “Is that the first time?” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said of not declaring any player out. “It is better than rattling off seven names.” Tennessee (10-5) will have left tackle Taylor Lewan and right guard Rodger Saffold back after short stints on the reserve/COVID-19 list and them missing last week’s win over the 49ers. Lewan was declared out with a back issue, while Saffold went on the COVID list the day before. Linebacker David Long, who missed the last six games with an injured hamstring, practiced all week and is available. The Titans have only two players listed as questionable on an injury report with only nine players listed. Defensive lineman Larrell Murchison did not practice Friday with a knee issue...

A maid at a hotel in Denver has been praised for reporting to authorities a significant weapons stash in one of the rooms, which authorities initially feared could be used for a Vegas-style mass shooting. Four people have been arrested - with one of the four, a recent divorcee, posting a cryptic Facebook message saying he would 'go out in a big way.' On Sunday the FBI in Denver said they did not believe the arrests were connected to Tuesday's MLB All-Star game at Coors Field. 'We have no reason to believe this incident was connected to terrorism or a threat directed at the All-Star Game,' they tweeted.  'We are not aware of any threat to the All-Star Game events, venues, players, or the community at this time.' Officers are seen inside the hotel room at The Maven, where on Friday a maid reported finding 16 long guns, more than 1,000 rounds of ammo, and body armor. Initial fears were that the four arrested were plotting a repeat of the 2017 Las Vegas massacre, when 60 people were shot...

James Logan football coach Eddie Smith was driving his daughter to school Friday morning when he got the confirmation over the phone. His team will play host to Grace Davis of Modesto on Friday night, with no film breakdown, no practice plays against a scout team, no thorough knowledge about the opponent at all. They’re just going to play.  Welcome to high school football amid a pandemic. Logan was supposed to play host to Hayward. But the game was mutually called off as a precaution, Smith told the Bay Area News Group, because of a possible contact tracing issue at Hayward after a positive coronavirus test on the JV team. Smith said he didn’t want to risk a possible spread to his program, which would put the rest of the season in jeopardy. “With low numbers, their varsity and JV practice together,” Smith said. “It was just a precaution thing that we decided not to play due to the seriousness of this pandemic and COVID.” Smith and his staff scrambled to look for...
After a three year run, the latest chapter in the Jason Voorhees story is coming to something of an end (via IGN). Publisher Gun Media says it will release one final update for Friday the 13th: The Game before shutting the multiplayer slasher fest’s dedicated servers down. The good news is you’ll still be able to play online through peer-to-peer and private matchmaking, and you won’t lose any progression you’ve made due to the server shutdown.  Gun Media promised to share more details on the update one week before it lands in November. In the meantime, it said it will fix “a long list of player issues.” Those who need to get technical support will be able to do so through JasonKillsBugs.com and the game will continue to be sold. However, outside of important announcements, you won’t see much activity from the title’s official social media channels, and while you’ll still be able to visit the official community forums, you won’t be able to post on them.
The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres were moments away from starting the second game of a four-game series at Petco Park on Friday when both teams abruptly left the field. The Padres announced shortly after the scheduled 6:10 p.m. first pitch the game had been postponed and said a reason would be given when it became available. Giants manager Gabe Kapler was spotted talking near the visiting dugout with general manager Scott Harris as players grabbed their equipment and retreated to their respective clubhouses on Friday. Kapler then informed members of the Giants bullpen to head back inside in San Diego. No National League West teams have had a player test positive for COVID-19 this season, but several teams in the Central and East divisions have had their schedules interrupted due to coronavirus outbreaks on the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. It is not clear if the postponement of Friday’s game was the result of a positive coronavirus test, but it did not appear as if air quality was directly responsible for the decision to clear the...
