When an anti-tank mine blew up the car bringing Corporal Yuliia Rymarenko back from Ukraine’s frontline, she was sure she had lost her legs. The mother-of-one’s foot was hanging off and there was blood everywhere, but she remained calm: ‘I was morally prepared for it – it is war and it can happen.’ She is lucky to be alive – and even more so to still have her legs. ‘At best, the recovery from my injuries will take four to six months,’ Yuliia tells the Daily Mail from her hospital bed in Dnipro.  ‘After that, I will return to my unit. But I hope that by that time, we will have won the war.’ The army signaller’s steely determination is jarring: she was injured on June 2 and is already planning her return to combat. Two American US Army veterans have been taken as prisoners of war in Ukraine, the first since the conflict began in March.  Robert Drueke and Andy Huynh were taken prisoner by Russian forces last week on the outskirts of Kharkiv, according to sources cited by The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday.  The pair had flown to the region as volunteers. Drueke, 39, and Huynh, 27, are both from Alabama.  One of their comrades described losing sight of the pair in a battle last week.   'We were out on a mission and the whole thing went absolutely crazy, with bad intel.  'We were told the town was clear when it turned out the Russians were already assaulting it.  'They came down the road with two T72 tanks and multiple BMP3s (armored fighting vehicles) and about 100 infantry. The only thing that was there was our ten man squad,' said one of their comrades. This is the moment Ukrainian troops destroy one of Russia's most advanced tanks which are protected by special reactive armour.  The armour on the T-90M is designed to explode when hit reducing the penetrative power of an incoming round.  The tank is also protected with a automated defence system which fires smoke grenades when it is 'painted' by a laser beam used by an incoming missile.  However, the Ukrainian military released drone footage on a Russian armoured unit which resulted in the destruction of the £4million tank as well as a thermobaric multiple rocket system.   Ukrainian forces are believed to have destroyed one of Russia's most advanced Main Battle Tanks in the north east of the country. The T-90M is thought to have additional protection against modern weapon systems A Ukrainian drone monitored a Russian tank as a missile attack was incoming  The Russians were unaware they were only moments from destruction  The drone showed several armoured vehicles blow up in quick succession  The Ukrainian military said the attacks took place in the north-eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv Oblast. Washington (CNN)US and coalition forces that fought in Syria in 2017 to recapture the city of Raqqa from ISIS could have done more to decrease harm done to civilians living in the city during the months-long battle, a think tank report released on Thursday found. Strategic choices the US and coalition forces made in the battle, like choosing to encircle the city and focus primarily on an air campaign in order to have fewer troops on the ground and decrease risk to them, ultimately had a greater impact on civilian harm, the report from the RAND Corporation said. The choice to encircle the city was a "more aggressive approach," that likely made it harder to create "civilian exit corridors" and may have caused ISIS to go further into the "densely-populated heart of the city," the report said."US forces faced a considerable risk trade-off in conducting what was primarily an air campaign against ISIS in Raqqa and relying only on a limited ground presence," the report said. "Having more ground forces... could have improved US and coalition capabilities to mitigate and respond...

One of Britain's last surviving D-Day veterans who was nicknamed 'Mr Never Surrender' has died aged 97. Alan King, a radio operator in a Sherman tank, battled his way across France, Holland and Germany after landing on Sword Beach in Normandy on June 6, 1944. He made headlines in 2016 after he was reunited with a Dutch woman whose life he had saved during a battle when she was just four years old. He became a familiar figure in recent years at reunion events in UK and Europe for the dwindling band of veterans who fought in the Second World War. Mr King's wartime memories were highlighted by the Royal Mint in 2019 in its publicity material for the launch of a £2 coin to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
