The Orioles have reached an agreement with first overall draft pick Jackson Holliday, pending a physical, for $8.19 million, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told The Baltimore Sun. The bonus for Holliday, a high school shortstop from Oklahoma and the son of former MLB All-Star Matt Holliday, is a record for a high school draft pick and narrowly edged out the bonus catcher Adley Rutschman received in 2019 for the largest in team history. The slot value for the first overall pick was $8,846,900, so Holliday’s agreed value is slightly lower. The Orioles’ policy is to not comment on deals until they are official. Holliday is the second top pick the Orioles have made under executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias, and the third in the franchise’s history. The signing bonus the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed with Druw Jones, the second pick in the draft, was $8.189 million, according to multiple reports. That broke the previous record for a high school draft pick, set in 2019 by Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals. With...
(CNN)He came in with a lot of hype and expectation, and in his first professional outing, Chet Holmgren shone. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder donned the blue jersey for the first time on Tuesday in the NBA Summer League. The Summer League is an off-season competition in which teams predominately play rookies, second year and fringe NBA players to give minutes to developing talents and see who fits and who doesn't. In the 98-77 victory over the Utah Jazz, Holmgren wowed the fans in his 24 minutes on the court, setting records as he went. The 20-year-old big man finished with 23 points -- including 4-of-6 attempts from three-point range -- seven rebounds and four assists. When he was told afterwards that he had broken the block record, Holmgren said he wanted more. "Only six? That's the record? Oh, well I'm coming to break it again,"...
Georgia just set the record with the most draft picks by a single school, with 15 former Bulldogs getting picked in the 2022 NFL Draft. With blocking tight end John FitzPatrick coming off the board to the Atlanta Falcons, of all teams, at pick No. 213 in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Georgia football program just broke an all-time record with the most picks from a school in a single draft class with 15. FitzPatrick was the 15th Dawg taken in this particular draft, breaking the record previously co-held by Ohio State (2004) and LSU (2020). Georgia had five players taken in the first round on Thursday night, including Travon Walker No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars. While Georgia had an all-time defense in its national championship season, the Dawgs cleaned up in the draft. Yes, the San Jose Sharks will have a chance of winning the NHL Draft Lottery on May 10 and selecting center Shane Wright with the No. 1 overall pick. It’s just not a great chance. Depending on what happens Friday on the final day of the NHL’s regular season, the Sharks (32-36-13, 77 points) will finish with either the 10th or 11th-worst record in the league and have a 3.5 or 3.0 percent of winning the Wright sweepstakes. If the Sharks beat the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena, they will finish with 79 points and 22nd in the NHL’s overall standings, or 11th worst. If the Sharks lose in regulation time, or in overtime or a shootout, it’s possible they could slip to 23rd overall. For that to happen, the Anaheim Ducks, now with 76 points, would have to beat the Dallas Stars in regulation time. Both the Sharks and Ducks right now have 22 regulation time wins, which is the first tie-breaker. The second tie-breaker, though, is regulation or overtime wins, and the Sharks have a 29-27 edge...

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Tom Crean has had a busy week. He was inducted into the Marquette sports hall of fame and notched his first Southeastern Conference win of the season, all amid the backdrop of social media criticism and questions about his future as Georgia’s men’s basketball coach. Crean, who spent nine seasons as the coach at Indiana, said this is not new territory for him and he knows how to handle questions about his job security. “It’s not my first time down that road in the coaching life, and you learn from experiences,” Crean said this week. Crean coached five NCAA Tournament teams at Marquette, including the 2003 Final Four team. He had three Sweet 16 appearances among four NCAA teams at Indiana. Nonetheless, it didn’t end well for him with the Hoosiers. At Georgia, Crean is facing increasing backlash as the losses mount in his fourth season and his Bulldogs sit in last place in the SEC. Crean acknowledged feeling relief after his Bulldogs beat Alabama 82-76 on Tuesday night, becoming the last team to record its...

While the headline figures for 2021 are disappointing — the SMMT pinpointed the semiconductor shortage as being the "principal cause of the decline" — the low and zero-emission segment of the sector provided some light amid the gloom. The SMMT said that British factories manufactured a record amount of battery electric, hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2021, with a total of 224,011 being made. Conference play is scheduled to begin in earnest this week for Pac-12 basketball, but questions linger like it’s the winter of 2020-21: — How many teams will play all 20 league games? — Which programs will avoid a lengthy COVID pause? — How many games will be canceled outright? (There will be no forfeits. The Pac-12 announced last week that any games lost to COVID will be declared no contests.) This much we know: Somehow, someway, there will be a conference season. On Sunday night, in just his third game in the league, he put his skills on full display. Though the Rockets lost to the Boston Celtics, 107-97, it was no fault of Green's. He went for 30 points on 11 of 18 from the field, and added four rebounds, three assists and two blocks in what was by far the best game of his young career. ENNIS, Texas (AP) — Greg Anderson broke the Pro Stock victory record with his 98th win Sunday in the Texas NHRA FallNationals at Texas Motorplex. The 60-year-old Anderson won when Chris McGaha red-lighted in the final. “I saw (McGaha’s red light) on the scoreboard and I had a difficult time getting to the finish line from third gear on down,” Anderson said. “I think I took my arm off the shifter and pumped my fist a couple of times in between gears. I shouldn’t even be looking at (the scoreboard) but for some stupid reason I looked at the scoreboard and I saw mine was on. That was a hell of a relief.” Anderson, the four-time season champion and current points leader, broke a tie with Warren Johnson for the class record. Anderson once worked as Johnson’s crew chief. “It’s been a big build-up and I’ve had such a fantastic race car all year, it was almost impossible for it not to happen, but at the same time there’s so many great drivers that can whip you,” Anderson said. “There’s...

Save the date for the NHL Draft lottery taking place on June 2. The 2021 NHL Draft Lottery is coming up soon. For fans of the now 15 (hi Seattle Kraken!) teams who did not qualify for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the draft lottery is one of the most important dates of the offseason, trailing only the draft itself and the start of free agency. It was Clint Eastwood as “Dirty Harry” who once said, “A man’s got to know his limitations.” Or maybe it was one of my editors after a particularly tortured paragraph. Either way, you could apply the phrase to the Raiders and the NFL Draft, which begins Thursday night in Round 1. It wouldn’t be a terrible thing if the Raiders traded out of the first round completely and didn’t make their first pick until Friday in Round 2. Might be the best thing, actually, given their drafts of late should come with overdraft protection. Although it doesn’t always work out that way, the hope of any NFL team is that a first-round draft pick becomes an immediate contributor while learning on the job. New York Giants could make the playoffs or pick as high as third overall in 2021 NFL Draft By: Anthony Rivardo December 28, 2020 ShareTweetFlipRedditDespite losing to the Baltimore Ravens yesterday, the New York Giants are still very much alive in the playoff hunt. The lowly NFC East has kept the Giants in the playoff hunt despite their 5-10 record. But the Giants do not have complete control over their playoff destiny heading into Week 17. They will need some help to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Inversely, the Giants have the unique opportunity to be awarded a top-three draft pick in 2021 if they miss the playoffs by only one game. How the Giants could make the playoffs The Giants will need some help to get into the playoffs next week. First and foremost, the Giants need to beat the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17. Getty Eagles rookie Jalen Hurts coughed the ball up three times on Sunday in a 37-17 season-ending loss to the Cowboys. The most talked about moment from Sunday’s 37-17 loss — aside from DeSean Jackson’s 81-yard bomb — was that fourth-quarter fumble by Jalen Hurts. It sure looked like his knee was down before the football came out, a fact bemoaned on the national broadcast by both color commentator Jonathan Vilma and rules analyst Dean Blandino. But the referees had ruled it a turnover on the field and an official review confirmed it. The Dallas Cowboys took control from their own 13-yard line and marched 87 yards the other way for a touchdown that put the final nail in the Eagles’ 2020 coffin. After the game, NFL Officiating felt the need to post a breakdown of the controversial play on Twitter. They slowed it down to the exact moment when Hurts’ left knee touches the ground and indicated that the ball was already moving. Take a look and be your own judge (personally, I don’t see it).
