President Joe Biden and the first family are on vacation at the $20 million Kiawah Island estate of a prominent political donor who has given lavishly to Biden and Democrats, as well as anti-Trump Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY). The 10,500-square-foot, nine-bedroom oceanfront retreat is owned by Maria Allwin, the Connecticut-based widow of real estate and hedge fund manager James Allwin, and she has hosted Biden in years past, including while he was vice president. “They stayed here before and they’re not paying,” a source close to the family told the New York Post. “They’ve never paid. They’re just friends.” Biden asked Allwin if he could stay at her home, the source told the Post. An employee of Boston's Hotel Diplomat was making their morning rounds on March 19, 1980, when they made a discovery that took nearly two decades to unravel. However, that tangled mess started to detangle as police announced this week they've made a break in the case.  Wendy Dansereau, a 19-year-old mother with a 4-week-old daughter, was found in one of the rooms at the South End hotel after she was raped and strangled, reports said. Detectives scoured the scene, but there were few leads. Luckily, they collected items that had the killer's DNA.  Nearly 40 years later, cold case officers ran a sample of that genetic material through the FBI's CODIS system and got a match, MassLive said in 2019. The DNA belonged to Steven Fisk, a man serving a life sentence in an Alabama prison for an eerily similar crime, AL.com said.  A court convicted him in 1982 for the rape and murder of a 20-year-old that was found in a ditch off of I-95 in Tuscaloosa County. Prosecutors said Fisk lured her to a hotel room, sexually assaulted her, and caved in...
(CNN)Two long waits were ended in historic fashion at the British Women's Open in Scotland on Sunday. As Muirfield -- home to a golf club founded in 1744 -- played host to the women's event for the first time, Ashleigh Buhai lifted her first major title on her 221st career LPGA Tour start. On an enthralling final day befitting of the occasion, the South African snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, roaring back from the brink of a late collapse to pip three-time major champion Chun In-Gee in a nail-biting four-hole playoff. In doing so, Buhai added her name to an illustrious list of South African golfers to have won at Muirfield, the site of maiden men's Open wins for Gary Player and Ernie Els.Yet while the legendary duo have 13 major titles between them, Buhai will forever hold the unique honor of being the first women's Open winner at the fabled Scottish links course. With Muirfield overturning its male-only membership policy in 2017, the added significance of triumph is not lost on Buhai.Read More"To add my name to that...

(The Center Square) — South Carolina has the second-lowest gas price in the country, according to numbers from the American Automobile Association. South Carolina’s price-per-gallon average is now $3.59, just behind Texas ($3.55) but well below the national average of $4.05 South Carolina is down from its record high of $4.60 on June 12. "Oil is the primary ingredient in gasoline, so less expensive oil is helpful in taming pump prices," said AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross. "Couple that with fewer drivers fueling up, and you have a recipe for gas prices to keep easing. It’s possible that the national average will fall below $4 this week." Gross was citing a survey that showed 64% of drivers have changed their driving habits since March due to high gas prices, including 23% making what they consider to be major changes. Of those who made changes, 88% said that they drove less, 74% said they combined errands on a trip and 56% said that they reduced shopping or dining out. Gas Buddy analyst Patrick De Haan said...

A recent congressional push against Russian influence in Africa threw a bit of a wrench into Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s plans to improve U.S. ties with one of the continent’s leading states. He arrived in South Africa in part to unveil a new U.S. strategy for sub-Saharan Africa, which is in the midst of a population growth surge that could propel African societies to economic and political heights. “By 2050, 1 in 4 people on this planet will be African,” he said. “So this is the future, quite literally. And what we’re investing in is that future.” Blinken touted that investment while attempting to surmount the impediments left by the history of Western imperialism in Africa, a legacy that China and Russia routinely invoke while advancing their strategic interests in the region. South Africa's foreign minister, Naledi Pandor, acknowledged that Blinken “confirmed that America is not asking us to choose” sides in a new geopolitical struggle, but she didn’t hide her displeasure for a House-passed bill that would require the State Department to assess and “to hold accountable the...

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — For the past three decades, South Carolina lawmakers have chipped away at abortion access, requiring ultrasounds, parental consent and 24-hour waiting periods, and banning the procedure early in the pregnancy: first after 20 weeks, then after six. But now that the U.S. Supreme Court has cleared a path to ban abortion entirely in the state, some are taking a step back. Politicians, mostly Republican, are noting what happened this month in Kansas, where nearly 60% of voters rejected a ballot measure that would have allowed the state’s conservative Legislature to ban abortion. Republican Donald Trump received 56% of the 2020 presidential vote in Kansas. Trump won 55% in South Carolina. “The Kansas vote affirms what most of us know,” said Sen. Sandy Senn, the only Republican senator to vote against the six-week abortion ban that passed 18 months ago. “It’s the people in my party, most all of them men, yelling the loudest that women should have zero choice from the moment of conception.” Senn says that while she personally believes “all babies should be born,”...

Hank Goldberg, a longtime South Florida radio host and TV personality, passed away Monday in his Las Vegas home. He died on his birthday at the age of 82 after a long battle with kidney disease, his family confirmed. A staple of the sports talk industry in Miami for more than 25 years, Goldberg began work in the 1970s as the color analyst for the Miami Dolphins from 1978-1992. He spent that time covering the franchise’s golden era under legendary coach Don Shula, with whom he formed a close relationship. Goldberg, who got his start ghost-writing Jimmy The Greek’s syndicated gambling column, broke Shula’s retirement story after the 1995 season. Goldberg — whose nickname was the “Hammer” — was part of the Dolphins radio team during the franchise’s Perfect Season in 1972. Goldberg also went on to spend nine years at local TV station, WTVJ, from 1983-1992. He became best-known for hosting his radio talk show on WQAM from 1993-2009. At the same time, in 1993, Goldberg began to work for ESPN covering the Dolphins beat in addition to serving...
JOHANNESBURG — At least 21 people were killed over the weekend as gunmen opened fire on three taverns in South Africa, in what police described as “random” shootings. Early Sunday in Soweto, in Johannesburg, a group of men armed with rifles and automatic handguns stormed a busy tavern in the Nomzamo shantytown, in the city’s Orlando East neighborhood, said Col. Three more people later died at a hospital, police said. They said that those killed were between the ages of 19 and 35. The gunmen fled the scene, and no arrests have been made, police said. Later Sunday, people gathered outside the tavern as police removed bodies from the building. Only hours before the attack in Soweto, gunmen in Pietermaritzburg, a city about 300 miles southeast of Johannesburg in KwaZulu-Natal province, killed at least four people and injured at least eight in a shooting in a tavern...

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Caster Semenya is listed to compete at next week’s world championships in Oregon, potentially setting up a surprise return to the big stage for the two-time Olympic champion and one of the most contentious athletes. Semenya was listed on Friday for the women’s 5,000 meters, an event she has turned to after being banned from running in her favorite 800 meters race by track and field’s testosterone regulations. Semenya’s inclusion on a competitor list released by World Athletics was unexpected after she didn’t make the qualifying time for the 5,000 and was not included in the South Africa team for the worlds named this week. NBC reported that Semenya was moved up onto the list for the worlds after some higher-ranked runners didn’t enter the championships. South Africa’s track federation and Semenya’s representatives didn’t immediately respond to requests for clarification. If she runs, it will be the first time Semenya has appeared at a world championships or Olympics since 2017, when she won her third world title in the 800. She also has...
