(CBS4) – Rumors are circulating online that an annual, unsanctioned gathering of thousands of people will make its way back to Colorado this year. The Rainbow Family Gathering marks its 50th year this summer. The loose-knit group of world-peace seeking people meet on national forest land for days or even weeks at a time, and after a number of destructive wildfires, some Coloradans are concerned a gathering of that magnitude is too big of a risk. “We’re working with the community, engaging with them just to plan for this potential event or incident to take place,” said Hilary Markin with the U.S. Forest Service’s National Rainbow Incident Management Team. The Rainbow Family of Living Light is made up of thousands of people from all across the country. The loosely organized group has no leaders or organization structure, and while the family means different things to different people, most members have a common goal to gather in the name of love and world peace. SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Book Festival has announced that the 2021 event will take place online, but in-person sessions are possible depending on COVID-19 trends. The 2021 festival will take place from April 9-11, bringing in 75 authors from the local to the national level. The authors will be announced in early February. This will be the first time the festival will take place online, organizers said Thursday. The festival also includes sessions for adults, children, young adults and middle-school aged kids. While it is unknown what course the pandemic will take by the spring, organizers said in-person and socially distanced sessions could be announced later. “... We are embracing the potential to reach a wider audience and elevate the Book Festival’s reputation on a national scale,” SABF’s executive director Lilly Gonzalez said in a news release. “... But the safety of our attendees, writers, moderators, and volunteers is our first priority. If we have to be virtual, we’re focusing on ways to make the online experience as close to the real thing as we can.” The free...
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine's largest farm trade show will be a virtual event next year as the state's agricultural sector continues to adapt to the coronavirus pandemic. The Maine Agricultural Trades Show will be held online in January 2021, the state's Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry said in a statement. The department organizes the event, and department officials said the ability to gather in person “is still likely to be limited to a level that is much lower than the number of people who would regularly attend” the trade show. The trade show has taken place since 1941 and typically includes more than 100 exhibitors and dozens of conference sessions. It also serves as a networking and planning event for the state's farmers, who use the show to get ready for the coming season. “We know our farmers and producers would value the opportunity to gather together in preparation for the 2021 season, and for many, the Trades Show is an annual kick-off event for the year. But ultimately, the health and wellbeing of our community takes precedence,"...
AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) — It was one of the first major U.S. events canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic and next year organizers of the South by Southwest Festival in Austin are taking no chances. On Wednesday officials announced plans for both a digital and in-person event for SXSW 2021. Each year SXSW offers a mixture of conferences, festivals, and exhibitions with leaders in politics, music, entertainment and technology. Next year organizers say things will be no different. The offerings of SXSW Online 2021 will include digital conference keynotes and sessions, screenings, showcases, networking, and exhibitions. SXSW EDU Online is scheduled to take place March 9 – March 11, 2021 and SXSW Online will take place March 16 – March 20. Entries for next year’s digital experience open October 6. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), long the world’s largest tech trade show, will be all-digital in January 2021, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) announced on Monday. The CTA cited the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns about the spread of the virus as its reasoning for canceling the in-person event CES usually takes place in Las Vegas and involves many large gatherings in tightly packed convention halls, as well as smaller meetings between retailers, manufacturers, and other industry professionals. Per the CTA, the digital CES will be a “new immersive experience.” The organization did not provide many details about what the online event will look like, but it claims it will be “highly personalized.” The organization still plans to hold CES 2022 in Las Vegas. Previously, the CTA was planning to hold CES 2021 in person, with companies having the option to exhibit digitally. A number of large conferences that were scheduled to take place this year have either been canceled or moved to online-only experiences.
The House Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee has postponed the July 27th hearing that would have seen the CEOs of Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google testify before Congress. In a notice posted online, the panel did not provide a reason for the delay, nor did it say when the event will eventually take place. However, the likely cause for the postponement is the memorial that will take place at 2PM ET on Monday to honor recently deceased Congressman John Lewis . The online hearing was scheduled to start at 12PM ET. Provided none of the executives withdraw from the rescheduled hearing, it will be the first time Tim Cook, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg and Sundar Pichai will all testify before Congress together. The hearing will tackle the ongoing investigation the Antitrust Subcommittee launched to determine whether the four tech giants are stifling competition.
For the first time in its three-year history, there won’t be an arena full of screaming fans to go along with the Overwatch League’s Grand Finals. As the league has shifted online for 2020 due to the ongoing pandemic, it has had to reimagine what its championship tournament will look like. And today Blizzard provided some details on the upcoming playoff format. Essentially, at the conclusion of the regular season, all of the 20 teams will face off in a playoff-style tournament kicking off on September 3rd, with seeding based on how they performed during the year. The format will be similar to the tournament structure the league adopted midway through 2020, with two competitions: one for teams based in Asia and another for North America. The top two teams from each of those tournaments will then face off in a double-elimination competition, culminating in the championship match. (You can check out full details of the schedule on the league’s website.) Blizzard says the top two North American teams will fly to an unspecified location in Asia before the finals,...
