Getty Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has high expectations for the 2022 season. It’s every team’s goal each season to win the Super Bowl. Of course, not every team will come out and make that objective public. But as the owner of the Indianapolis Colts, Jim Irsay hasn’t been one to shy away from providing a sound bite. Irsay made it clear while appearing in front of reporters at training camp on August 17 that the Colts’ 2022 season is mainly about three things — Tennessee, finally “winning the division” again, and capturing another Super Bowl title. “It’s to go and get that next Lombardi Trophy,” Irsay said to reporters. “Since 2000, we’re the fourth winningest team in the National Football League, with just three in front of us. “That’s something to be said over such a long period of time … But now is the time to create another era.” The Colts haven’t won the AFC South since 2014. Only five teams in the AFC have a longer division title drought. ALL the latest Colts news straight to...
ATLANTA — The day has finally come. It didn’t happen earlier in the season as Dom Smith and J.D. Davis failed to make much of an impact at the designated hitter spot, and it didn’t happen at the trade deadline, when the Mets’ front office pilfered Daniel Vogelbach and Darin Ruf instead of promoting someone in-house. That long-awaited promotion is upon us now, as the Mets are calling up 2019 first-round pick Brett Baty, per reports. Both general manager Billy Eppler and manager Buck Showalter had insisted that Baty would not be part of the picture anytime soon — Showalter as recently as Monday — but injuries forced their hand. Infielders Luis Guillorme (groin strain) and Eduardo Escobar (oblique strain) both suffered injuries within the last seven days, and Guillorme’s was severe enough to put him on the injured list. A groin malady of that caliber, per the Mets, could cause Guillorme to miss up to six weeks. Baty has dabbled in left field during his minor league career but is primarily a third baseman. Baty was the 12th overall...
Emma Raducanu hailed Serena Williams as 'the greatest of all time' after beating her 6-4 6-0 in their first and likely last encounter - but the American didn't stick around to hear her words after making a quick departure from the court. Williams, 40, stayed on court for a rare loser's interview after her defeat in straight sets to Belinda Bencic in Canada last week, a day after announcing her retirement. But on this occasion she made a quick exit, despite organisers in Cincinnati lining up champagne for an on-court ceremony. She also chose not to attend the press conference afterwards. Raducanu, 19, told the interviewer: 'I think we all need to just honour Serena and her amazing career. I'm so grateful for the experience of being able to play her and for our careers to cross over. 'Everything that she's achieved is so inspirational and it was a true honour to share the court with her. 'Tonight was a match in my eyes, to be able to play the greatest of all time - who knows how many more opportunities we will get...

(CNN)Standing room only, fans lined around the block and social media coverage like never before, all there to see one man: a four-time NBA champion and four-time NBA Most Valuable Player. LeBron James is a living, breathing ticket salesman without even trying. So when he turned up to play at the Drew League -- an annual summer pro-am league in California -- in July for the first time since 2011, people turned out in droves. Appearing alongside five-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan for the MMV Cheaters, James put up 42 points, 16 rebounds and four steals as the Cheaters beat the Black Pearl Elite 104-102. However, when clips of James' surprise appearance took to social media, it was the player guarding him who caught the headlines. Getty Josh McDaniels with Derek Carr. Randall Cunningham thought he was making a difference as team chaplain for the Las Vegas Raiders. Those feelings weren’t exactly mutual, at least not among the leaders of the new regime out there. Cunningham recently stepped down from his post after failing to get a call back from head coach Josh McDaniels. The legendary quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles saw the ghosting as a sign that he wasn’t wanted. The Raiders appear to be moving in a different direction, perhaps taking religion out of the locker room. The organization hired a new head coach, new general manager, and new team president. No one phoned Cunningham, according to Chris Tomasson of TwinCities.com “I kept calling and calling and calling, trying to contact the right officials to get the OK on what the direction was with Coach McDaniels, but it just went by, and finally I said, ‘I don’t think I’m needed here anymore,’” Cunningham told Tomasson. “He texted me one time and he said, ‘I’m looking forward to you and your involvement...

“Today’s children are 30% less aerobically fit than their parents were at their age, a new study found.

The study points to climate change and rising temperatures adversely affecting childhood obesity, as children spend less time exercising outdoors.” — CBS Mornings (@CBS Mornings) 1660423500 The thousands of Twitter reactions to the segment pushing a study linking childhood obesity to climate change were brutal for CBS Mornings. Many commentators noted that children nowadays are consumed with screens that may prevent them from going outside to exercise. Others pointed out that diets are probably not as healthy as they used to be. There were some who blamed Democrats and blue states for closing schools, playgrounds, sports leagues, and beaches – which led to a more sedentary lifestyle for children. Others questioned the study as to why obesity isn't more prevalent in hotter climates than in colder ones. BlazeTV personality Sara Gonzales: "Or! Their parents are fat and lazy. And bad parents. Didn’t even need a study to give you that truth." Stanford professor Jay Bhattacharya: "Public health bureaucrats closed playgrounds,...
10 thoughts after the Chicago Bears rallied for a victory in the first preseason game for new coach Matt Eberflus, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 19-14 on Saturday afternoon at Soldier Field. 1. What the Bears saw from the Chiefs was precisely what they long to become. Efficient. Dangerous. Rhythmic. Multiple. Chiefs coach Andy Reid zigged where a lot of veteran coaches are zagging in preseason. He ran his starting offense out for the start of the game and gave the group a series. Not every coach plays front-line players in preseason, especially irreplaceable veterans such as quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and the talented group of Chiefs offensive linemen. Perhaps Reid believes revamping the passing game somewhat after trading wide receiver Tyreek Hill was a good reason to give them a little action in the preseason opener. Maybe he figured they will have a better chance of reaching full throttle in Week 1 with a gradual buildup through meaningless games that expose star players to danger. Whatever the case, the Chiefs went right through the Bears defense...

Syl’s Final Ride, the marketing campaign created by the Lynx to celebrate Sylvia Fowles’s last season in the WNBA, hasn’t been an easy fit for its namesake. Fowles hates being the center of attention – as if, at 6-foot-6-inch, she can ever escape it. But as a difficult season for the Lynx meandered on, the player known league-wide as Sweet Syl accepted the visibility and accolades with the same grace she’s shown throughout her 15 pro seasons. Fowles got flowers from former Lynx and LSU teammate Seimone Augustus in Los Angeles, a hug from fellow soon-to-be retiree Sue Bird in Seattle, and a recliner from the Chicago Sky, her original WNBA team. After the All-Star Game, also in Chicago, where the 36-year-old Fowles dropped an impromptu dunk for the appreciative crowd, Bird gave her the game ball. So, is she finally comfortable with all this? “No, it has not gotten comfortable,” Fowles said on a Zoom video call earlier this week. “As a matter of fact, it’s gotten worse.” Then she stopped to laugh before continuing. Adley Rutschman’s past two months have lived up to the hefty billing the top prospect carried to the majors. A continuation over the season’s final two months might not only propel the Orioles to the playoffs, but also earn the rookie phenom some hardware. Despite a delayed arrival to the majors and a slow start once he got there, Rutschman has thrust himself into the race for American League Rookie of the Year. While several other candidates have been with their teams since opening day, Rutschman’s impact on and performance with Baltimore since joining the roster in late May have made him a clear contender. Two months ago Wednesday, the Orioles’ 24-year-old catcher was off to a 5-for-56 start to his major league career. He entered Thursday having hit .292/.410/.516 in the games since, walking more than he’s struck out and ranking fifth in the majors in FanGraphs’ version of wins above replacement. As Rutschman has taken off, so too have the Orioles. They entered Thursday 34-17 since June 11, the best record in the American League during that time....
Getty Chicago Bears LB Roquan Smith. The Las Vegas Raiders‘ roster is looking much improved in Dave Ziegler’s first year as general manager. The biggest move he made was trading for Davante Adams but the rest of the roster is looking solid. Even with all the big moves, the team still has $22.3 million in salary cap space, per OverTheCap. The offense is stacked with talent and should be one of the best units in the NFL. The defense could be really good under defensive coordinator Patrick Graham but there may still be some holes. Denzel Perryman proved to be one of the better NFL linebackers last season and made the Pro Bowl. Outside of him, there aren’t many proven options at linebacker for the Raiders. Divine Deablo showed a lot of potential last season but it remains to be seen how he’ll play with added pressure. If the Raiders think they can upgrade their linebacker situation, an intriguing option could be available. Getty Indianapolis Colts defensive end Yannick Ngakoue plans to make game plans with one of the greatest pass rushers in Colts history this season. New Indianapolis Colts defensive end Yannick Ngakoue has endeared himself to his new organization and fan base in so many ways this offseason. In light of the reported plan Ngakoue has for the 2022 campaign, that will likely continue into the regular season. Colts beat writer Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reported Ngakoue plans to meet with former Colts four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Robert Mathis throughout the season. In their meetings, Ngakoue will aim to develop specific game plans for each offensive tackle he faces every week. There really isn’t a former Colts player better that Ngakoue can look to for assistance. Mathis ranks first all time in Colts history with 123.0 sacks, 54 forced fumbles and 141 quarterback hits. “That’s someone who did it at a high level for a very, very long time, and he did it here,” Ngakoue told Atkins. “You’ve gotta look at the greats and always pick their...

Getty Donovan Mitchell and Jimmy Butler greet each other following a game between the Utah Jazz and the Miami Heat. Despite their best efforts, the Miami Heat‘s roster continues to look eerily similar to the one that stalled out during Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals in May. The team is still being mentioned as a player in the Kevin Durant sweepstakes, but it’s difficult to see a pathway for team president Pat Riley to actually make something happen. Jazz star Donovan Mitchell, on the other hand, may just be marginally more obtainable for the South Beach crew. And it’s not hard to see him transforming the Heat’s offense if he could somehow find his way out of Salt Lake City. He isn’t KD, but Mitchell remains one of the NBA‘s best individual talents and a multi-level scorer. In what some considered a down year for the baller, he still averaged 25.9 points, 5.3 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest while making 232 three-point buckets. Alas, Riley may not have enough assets at his disposal...

The Yankees paid Gerrit Cole $324 million to be one of Those Guys. Only he’s not, at least not so far. Cole is a big guy and obviously has a big arm. He has shown flashes when he does make you recall Buck Showalter’s definition of an ace: “You know one when you see one.” But how often do you really feel that way when you see Cole, who has already had five starts this year when he gave up five runs, and another game in Detroit one cold night when he didn’t make it out of the second inning? It’s not all Cole’s fault that he hasn’t been the kind of stud game-changer that his old teammate in Houston, Justin Verlander, continues to be. Cole showed a lot of heart and stuff and arm the night the Yankees lost Game 5 to the Rays in 2020, at the end of that short season. Getty Images Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets talks with Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors. After defeating the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals, many people were not only ready to declare Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry one of the greatest point guards of all time but perhaps one of the greatest players ever. Former Brooklyn Nets guard Mike James is not in that number. During a recent appearance on “The Players Choice” podcast he omitted the four-time NBA champion from his top five point guard list. When asked about his omission, James cited his reason as Curry being “one dimensional”. “Steph, how he plays and how he gets stuff off, it’s just kinda one-dimensional at times,” James said. “He’s not the primary ball-handler a lot, and for a point guard, that kinda bothers me,” James said. The Warriors star apparently caught wind of James’ comments. While being interviewed at his upcoming basketball camp, one reporter asked Curry if he would have any mercy on the campers that chose to play him one on one. In...
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Right guard Wyatt Teller firmly established himself as one of the NFL’s top offensive linemen last season, earning his first Pro Bowl selection. The Cleveland Browns rewarded him with a $56.8 million, four-year contract extension. Accolades and big money only go so far, though, when your primary goal is a winning a championship. “Last year, I thought we were going to go to the Super Bowl,” Teller said Friday at training camp. “I guess that’s the joke the Browns (and their fans) always have, but I really thought we were a dominating team and we just couldn’t stay healthy. So, I’m not focused on anything else right now but game one.” Cleveland is one week away from its preseason opener at Jacksonville, which its players view as a fresh start following a disheartening 8-9 campaign. Teller was a rock throughout, being named second-team All-NFL for the second year in a row. The offense has a different look compared to last season. Quarterback Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Jarvis Landry and center JC Tretter are gone, and quarterback...
Looking back, I should have known from the minute his hand ‘accidentally’ brushed mine that Ed was a philanderer, both irredeemable and utterly irresistible. I can still remember the jolt caused by his touch, the electric charge that crackled constantly between us, the sheer heat of being in his presence. And more than two decades on I still kick myself for not realising sooner that Ed was a man who couldn’t, and wouldn’t, stop his eye roving. I thought of Ed this week, as I read ex-newsreader Jan Leeming’s interview in the Daily Mail in which she declared that she had known many womanisers and had concluded that you can never tame a ladies’ man. Five-times married Jan knows more than most about the subject, and said: ‘I get so angry when it’s, “What’s this harridan done that no man stays with her”? This week I’m not writing about a hospice patient; I’m confessing my sins. I confess that giving unsolicited advice and making premature suggestions is one of my besetting sins. In retrospect, maybe that’s why my coworker, Viktoriya, bought me a figurine of a cartoonish looking little man dressed in coveralls, with an arm full of tools, with the title, “The Fixit Man”. My unsolicited advice to you is, “Mother’s tell your children not to do what I have done,” (Song, House of the Rising Sun). Several years ago,my father-in-law, Dave, at the age of sixty-one, suffered his first of five strokes. My wife, Susie, is an only child and her father and mother depended heavily upon her, as did our three daughters, ages one, three and nine at the time. At age thirty-six we were catapulted into the “sandwich generation”, those people who are “sandwiched” between simultaneously caring for minor children and aging parents. Members of the “sandwich generation” must allocate their limited resources, time, energy and money. Like the circus performer who tries to keep ten plates spinning on...

A matchmaker has revealed her '12 date rule' to help singles find their perfect match. Maria Avgitidis, from the US, said the key is to get to know someone before having sex to understand if you 'truly like them or not'. 'When we have sex we have a heavy dose of oxytocin (known as the "love drug") go through our bodies. Suddenly we're wearing rose coloured glasses, so not only the red flags are hard to see but the pink flags are just invisible,' Maria said on the Finding Mr Height podcast. 'What the 12-date rule does is it takes a step back and you're intentionally getting to know someone to determine if you actually like this person.' And the rule doesn't require going on 12 physical dates - it could simple be a 20-minute phone or video call, but excludes texting. Matchmaker Maria Avgitidis (pictured) said when dating the key is to get to know someone before having sex to understand if you truly like them or not The 12 date rule doesn't require going on 12 physical dates...

Getty Tom Brady is getting another weapon in Tampa Bay. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are adding even more firepower to the offense as the team has agreed to terms with star receiver Julio Jones, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. After spending his first 10 seasons inside the NFC South with the Falcons, Jones was traded to the Titans last offseason but underwhelmed during his one season in Nashville. Jones posted 31 receptions for 434 yards and one touchdowns during his 10 starts in 2021. The star wideout is just two seasons removed from 99 receptions for 1,394 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games for the Falcons in 2019. “Seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones is signing a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, per source,” Schefter tweeted on July 26, 2022. “The soon-to-be 45-year Tom Brady now will have a chance to throw to the 33-year-old Jones. …Julio Jones drew interest from, amongst others, the Green Bay Packers and Buccaneers. But Tampa was the most aggressive in giving its QB a new offensive weapon....
Let’s start with the facts. Francisco Lindor has a .238 batting average for the Mets, a team for which he’s played 220 games heading into this week’s Subway Series with the crosstown Yankees. His .741 OPS with the Mets is significantly lower than the .833 he put up in six years with Cleveland. He’s striking out more than ever, hitting fewer line drives, and, in his year and change with the Mets, slugging more than 50 points below his career average. What he’s also doing is excelling in counting stats. His 66 RBI rank sixth in Major League Baseball as of Tuesday morning. He’s got 16 home runs, the second-most of any National League shortstop. Lindor is also one of just ten players so far this season to reach 15 homers and 10 stolen bases. By Wins Above Replacement — which is also a counting stat — the Mets’ shortstop is the tenth-most valuable player in the NL. So why does it feel like the Mets, their fans, their front office, and Lindor himself are still waiting for him to...

It was a beautiful night for baseball Monday as the Chicago Cubs returned home to play the Pittsburgh Pirates in a rare two-game homestand at Wrigley Field. Fans filed in knowing it could be the last time they see some of their favorites wearing a Cubs uniform, whether it’s stars like Willson Contreras and Ian Happ or one of a handful of relievers sure to be gone by the Aug. 2 trade deadline. This marks the second annual summer sell-off by Cubs President Jed Hoyer, who took his lumps last July for dealing Kris Bryant, Javier Báez and Anthony Rizzo, changing the direction of the franchise in one memorable 48-hour stretch that began with Rizzo’s trade to the New York Yankees. It’s too early to rate the return, especially since Hoyer acquired so many low-level prospects instead of those on the doorstep of a big-league call-up. But young talent including Pete Crow-Armstrong, Kevin Alcantara and Alexander Canario have shown significant progress in their first year in the Cubs system, and Hoyer remains confident the decision to restock the farm at...
In Wes Studi’s potent and pioneering acting career, he has played vengeful warriors, dying prisoners and impassioned resistance leaders. For three decades, he has arrestingly crafted wide-ranging portraits of the Native American experience. But one thing he had never done in a movie is give someone a kiss. “I thought it was about time, yeah,” Studi, 74, says chuckling. In “A Love Song,” a tender indie drama starring another long-pigeonholed character actor, Dale Dickey, Studi is for the first time cast as a romantic co-star. Dickey (“Winter’s Bone,” “Hell or High Water”) plays a woman camping by a mountain lake awaiting the visit of an old flame. Studi, the Cherokee actor who masterfully played the defiant Huron warrior Magua in Michael Mann’s “The Last of the Mohicans” and who got his first big break playing the character credited only as “the toughest Pawnee” in “Dances With Wolves,” hasn’t been limited entirely to what he calls “leather and feathers” roles. But it’s sometimes taken some extra effort. When he heard Mann was making “Heat,” Studi called up the...
